Plot speculation has long been a big part of the Degrassi universe, with fan theories ranging from being on point to completely nonsensical.

In between seasons 4 and 5 of TNG there was a rumor that Degrassi was going to give Marco Del Rossi an AIDS storyline, based primarily on a scene where he was asked if he wanted to spend his summer volunteering in Africa. I’ll forever remember that theory because it made no damn sense.

More reasonable speculation happened recently in Next Class, where theories swirled about that Hunter was actually going to shoot up Degrassi, potentially dying in the process. Hunter taking a gun to school was definitely in the realm of possibility, but realistically a shooting or death seemed unlikely because of the permanence of such an event. The death of main characters on Degrassi have only occurred under two specific circumstances (the actor intended to leave the show or the character was specifically created to be killed off), and there was never any reason to believe either applied here.

When it comes to purely speculating about future Degrassi plots the most important question is always, “How likely is it that said theory would happen compared to the alternative?”

The belief that Zoë Rivas might be pregnant comes from what she did during this scene in episode 110, #SorryNotSorry:

Cant see the video? Watch it here.

From this we could conclude there’s a chance Zoë is pregnant by saying she’s suffering from morning sickness, or devastated because she knows she’s pregnant. We could say the show, for the most part, was vague about what Zoë and Zig did in the woods during #ThisCouldBeUsButYouPlayin, so it’s possible they had sex without a condom. If we wanted to stretch things even further, we could take advantage of Degrassi’s generally-vague timeframe and say Zoë knew she was pregnant in #TeamFollowBack (hence her melancholy behavior during the entire episode), and even make the claim that she was in the bathroom during #SorryNotSorry because of morning sickness.

However, I find myself on the side that believes Zoë probably isn’t pregnant because a much stronger case can be made against a Zoëmund baby happening in the immediate future.

Tristan tries to give Zoë the same type of green smoothie in ep 110 she tried to give Grace in ep 102.

Tristan tried to give Zoë the same type of green smoothie in ep 110 that she tried to give Grace in ep 102.

My assumption, based on the fact Tristan tried to hand Zoë the same type of smoothie that she tried to give Grace in #NoFilter, is that Zoë felt extremely bad for what she did to Grace. Her guilt was also evident throughout the episode #TeamFollowBack, as Tristan repeatedly ribbed her for what she did. “Says the girl who made out with Zig to get back at Grace,” he said, the only definitive evidence of what Zoëmund did in the woods despite the fact we’re lead to believe more than that happened.

Damn Degrassi, back at it again with the pregnancy plot?

A primary reason to believe that Zoë won’t be pregnant is they literally just spent all of season 14 dealing with Clare Edwards’ pregnancy. That instantly takes Zoë having a miscarriage out of the question, and even with a changing of the guard (aka networks), we’re still forced to assume abortion is off the table until we see it happen. One thing I can agree on with this confession is that I feel based on Zoë’s character yearning for a connection (and her not knowing the identity of her father) she would want to keep the baby, taking the oft-used adoption route out of the equation too. However, a character raising a baby on Degrassi is just as rare as the abortion/miscarriage angles.

In Degrassi’s 35+ year history, only two times have we seen a Degrassi character get pregnant, have the baby and then actually raise said baby, and both times it was Spike Nelson. The first time happened to Spike during Degrassi Junior High, and the second time doesn’t even count because it happened during TNG when she was a married adult.

From teen mom to model…the usage of Mia’s character evolved alongside the show’s character hierarchy starting in season 8.

Pregnancies on Degrassi are more of a device to explore the heavy emotions involved with a teenager being thrust into a life-changing situation, something the show has been able to explore much better in recent seasons compared to TNG (Jenna’s adoption plot was one of the best storylines of season 11. They gave Clare a miscarriage plot in season 14, and Degrassi won multiple awards because of it).

With Mia Jones we saw the teen mom arc for a couple of seasons, but that eventually succumbed to the show establishing her as Degrassi’s top female character upon Darcy’s premature exit.

Zoë has had an insane amount of screentime and been involved in many heavy plots since the moment she stepped onto Degrassi. As intriguing as it’d be to see how Degrassi would deal with this type of storyline, I’m just not sure if having Zoë become a teen mom is a commitment Degrassi wants to lock one of their power players into.

  2. I am so upset that Zig and Zoe hooked up. I wish they would have not had a problem like that for Maya and Zig… I think it would have been interesting for them to go through drama that did not have to mean the end of their relationship forever. I thought theirs was the first relationship on Degrassi in a long time to actually seem real and it would have been more realistic if he didn’t cheat. If zoe is pregnant that is just ridiculous and I’ll not enjoy the season as much.

  3. I laughed at baby Zig manip .. Anywho, people do get sick to there stomachs due to too much guilt or they ate something bad.. I think Zoe was carrying to much guilt which made her sick to her stomach for what she did to Maya and Grace and it backfired.

  4. I really hope that Zoe isn’t pregnant. Her pregnancy would make such a mess of an already huge mess of character relationships and dynamics. Plus, there was so much emphasis on her discovering her attraction to girls this season, it’d seem weird to just move that aside to focus on her pregnancy and lock her with Zig.

  5. Pregnancy has become such a cheap and cliche way to create drama. It would be too predictable. Plus, it would be the third time in franchise history that they’ve done the “Guy cheats on his girlfriend and gets the other girl pregnant” storyline.

Then there’s the fact that Zoe has already dealt with sexual assault, the Degrassi Nudes scandal, struggling with her sexuality, parental issues, and dealing with Grace’s illness. A pregnancy would be overkill. That’s why I couldn’t care less about Clare’s storyline, no matter how good the acting was. A storyline this heavy should go to a character who hasn’t had much drama.

I’m pretty sure that the writers have been avoiding impregnating a character and having them keep the baby, because now that single seasons span less than a year, they would have to keep switching babies. They probably don’t want to deal with the hassle. If they want to deal with teen parenthood again, I would like to see another teen dad join the show, only this time he has full custody for whatever reason. An older kid won’t have to be rotated out the way a baby does.

  6. About Kary’s post. Okay, fine, maybe Zoe being pregnant IS predictable. I’ll keep it a 100.

BUT SO IS GRACE BEING GAY, or even bisexual, or into girls at all. Where’s the shock value when viewers(myself included, hence, my Grola shipping days) and characters alike have been assuming she was gay/bi from the giddy-up. Someone “forcing themselves” to be into girls because they lack the confidence to believe that a guy could ever be interested in a strong, blunt, not-so-conventionally feminine girl is way more original than the overdone closeted homosexual storyline.

So, don’t preach about predictability when the Gracevas end of things are equally cliche. Real talk. Not directed at Kary, btw.

Maybe Degrassi will play neutral and give neither Novas shippers or Gracevas shippers what they want. Differnce is, I honestly would NOT be upset if Zoe isn’t pregnant. Hell, it certainly wouldn’t have been my first idea if the pen was in MY hand anyway! And I’m sure other Novas fans feel the same way. We just thought a pregnancy storyline would be INTERESTING but we’re not desperate for it. We just want Novas. Period. But others are begging for Grace to be gay even though she said herself she was not.

I know this post had nothing to do with Gracevas but I had to bring it up because I’ve heard too many times(Kary, I do respect your opinion) how cliche and predictable and overdone etc. etc. Zoe being pregnant would be. Gracevas’s story would be no more creative or original if they wind up making her gay/bi/pan. So, yeah, that’s it.

    1. I don’t understand the point you’re trying to make, nor do I understand the reason for bringing up Grace’s sexuality. This just seems like an attack on Gracevas fans, who aren’t present on this page.

    2. You seem to be under the impression that fans who do not wish to see Zoe with a pregnancy plot want her to be with Grace. One thing has nothing to do with the other.

  7. I know this is a Zoe page, but does anyone have any predictions or anything to say on Esmiles? I know for a while it was predicted that Eric was leaving the show. I’m a big Esmiles fan so lol I guess that’s why I’m bringing them up and into the convo.

  8. If anyone gets pregnant it should be Maya. I think instead of an ‘accidental’ pregnancy, that it would be more interesting to see Maya and Zig’s story play out if she were to be pregnant now that they’ve broken up. I could see him thinking they would get back together and her maybe opting towards abortion to keep her career goals alive. Unlike Zoe/Zig who it is unclear if they had sex, we know Maya and Zig had sex at least once.
