Larissa Mair is at the helm as Degrassi’s Casting Director for another season, and there’s currently an open casting call for two new characters in season 3.

If you’re a newer viewer, Degrassi has already produced season 2 (which is expected to air later this year), so this audition is for episodes that would air in 2017.

Here are the two new character descriptions:

32016-2Rasha (15, Open Ethnicity) – FEMALE.

Quick-witted and sarcastic, Rasha comes to Degrassi, having relocated from the Middle East, ready to take on any and every high school experience. From crushes, to cameos in the school play, this star track and field athlete is constantly pushing boundaries and willing to try anything once (must be willing to cut hair short).

32016Saad (16, Open Ethnicity) – MALE.

Brooding and intense, Saad keeps his distance from the crowds of bubbly, babbling teens in Degrassi’s halls. To some, his self-imposed isolation reads as anger, and no one would blame him- – he came to Canada and left his childhood home in the Middle East behind. Truly, though, he’s just a thoughtful, artistic kid, struggling to find his place in his new country.

If you’re interested in auditioning, you (or your agent) have until Tuesday, March 29th to submit your entry. Yes, you must be a Canadian citizen (if you need to know why, the answer is here), and filming will be from May – August. Below are instructions for the auditions…please read them carefully to ensure your submission is complete before sending. All of the details are also on Larissa Mair’s website.

  1. Wow, two Middle Eastern characters – interesting! Given what’s going on in the world today, and especially given that Saad’s bio seems to emphasize that his life back home wasn’t too great, I’m guessing that the producers are going to use these two (or at least Saad) to address the refugee crisis.

  2. They’ve never really had any characters who were recent immigrants. Interesting.

    1. Yeah, they’ve always been 1st generation kids at best, which is nuts considering Toronto’s demographics. I am a little apprehensive though, because if the characters are recent immigrants, they probably won’t have a superb grasp of the English language, so I hope they find young actors who can do convincing accents.

  3. And last season they were going to have an openly butch lesbian named Maude. I would like to have seen that, since all lesbians on Degrassi have so far been femme. Also, I didn’t like at the end of season 14 when Becky referred to Imogen as a lesbian instead of bisexual. Even if Becky erred, no one corrected her. I thought Degrassi would be above bisexual erasure.

    1. I thought that Imogen was pansexual bc she said that she liked people to Adam before he died
