Degrassi Season 9 Back to the Grind

A photo of Sarah Barrable-Tishauer filming during the Season 8 episode "Touch of Grey."

This isn’t major news, but there haven’t really been any major Season 9 spoilers in a while and I wanted to give you guys SOMETHING at least.  Shooting for season 9 has been on hiatus for a while, but they were back at the studio today shooting a couple of scenes:

(Via Stephen Stohn’s twitter):

************************
…Next shooting day is Monday the 10th including Scene 125 “Alli wants to talk to an embarrassed Clare”… and Scene 2 “Emma and Kelly make the morning announcements–Act I”

We’ve started shooting again–Episodes 913-914 “Holiday Road” and “Start Me Up”
************************

I’m sure they’ll keep on updating us about shooting, episode titles, etc., but what I’m really looking forward to seeing are the Season 9 promos that will start running on The-N (TeenNick).  Degrassi Goes Hollywood airs this Friday, so if they don’t air a Season 9 promo right after the movie, I assume it’ll be September before we see one.

Degrassi Love/Hate: Crellie

With less than a week left until the Degrassi Goes Hollywood premiere, one of the interesting storylines will be what happens between Craig and Ellie.  In a direct quote from The-N’s press release:

*****************
“Ellie reunites with Craig (Jake Epstein) and old emotions surface between the former couple.”
*****************

If  you’ve been paying attention to the show, you’d know Craig and Ellie have NEVER been a couple.  Ever.  While I initially rooted for them because I want Ellie to happy, I also hit a phase where I realized how awful this concept transformed Ellie’s character.  Nowadays I still think that, but part of me also secretly wants to see them together.  Must…resist…Crellie!!

Anyway, here is my Degrassi Love/Hate for Crellie..why they should AND should not be together.

Crellie (Love)

Based on looks alone, Craig and Ellie would make a cute couple.  They have a close bond because of the time they’ve spent together in group therapy.  They’re also portrayed as having common interests (music, etc.).

Sean and Ellie were one of the most stable couples on Degrassi.

Of course the biggest pros to Crellie being a couple would be Ellie’s positive impact on Craig.  Regardless of her own issues, Ellie has always been a stability piece for those around her at the time, whether it was Marco, Ashley and most importantly Sean.  Basically “normal” Ellie would keep Craig from getting involved in more romantic stupidity on his part.

Crellie (HATE)

There’s no denying that Ellie’s feelings for Craig have turned her into a boy-crazy, former shell of herself.  A girl who was once outspoken and independent now follows Craig around like a puppy.

Ellies love for Craig got the best of her in What It Feels Like To Be A Ghost. I love you never counts when the person saying it is high on coke.

Ellie's love for Craig got the best of her in What It Feels Like To Be A Ghost. "I love you" never counts when the person saying it is high on coke.

Ellie was completely OOC in season 5, and during “What It Feels Like to Be A Ghost” in Season 6.  You could probably blame it all on Craig, since women tend to do stupid things when they’re in like with him.  That pro I listed earlier about Ellie being stability for people around her?  That goes out the window, because the lovesick Ellie of Season 5 and beyond wouldn’t be able to see past her Craig infatuation.

Verdict

If they hadn’t changed Ellie so much, Crellie wouldn’t be that big of a deal (unless you’re a Crash or Cranny fan).  Ellie shouldn’t have to change who she is to find love and be happy, and the fact that they transformed her from this free-thinking girl into a repeat of the smitten Manny Santos from early Season 3, makes me want to say “no thanks” to Crellie.

Crellie's last chance comes during Degrassi Goes Hollywood.

It’s a tough sell given that a lot of Crellie’s development has been done off camera from the summer before Season 5 until now.  Besides, what’s the point in FINALLY getting Crellie together at the very end of their tenure on the show?  Degrassi Goes Hollywood will be their final chance to convince me otherwise.

Degrassi Goes Hollywood Behind The Scenes Pics

I absolutely adore behind-the-scenes material, so I was stoked when Stefan Brogren (aka Mr. Simpson) posted several behind the scenes pics of Degrassi Goes Hollywood on his twitpic page.  Stefan directed the movie, so it’s awesome that he’s doing his part to keep up buzz about it.

For me Season 8 as a whole has been a disappointment, and I’m torn on this movie, but I’m leaning toward it being good for the simple fact that Stefan is the director…dude has skills, and he obviously did a good enough job that they allowed him to direct some episodes for Season 9

There’s 9 days left until Degrassi Goes Hollywood hits the air here in the U.S. (August 14), and 25 days until it airs in Canada (August 30).  If you wanna see promo pics for Degrassi Goes Hollywood, click here.

Drake Nominated for 2009 MTV VMA Award

Drizzy Drake continues to burn up the hip hop scene.  He’s been nominated for “Best New Artist” at this year’s VMA’s for his “Best I Ever Had” music video.  You can click here to vote for Drake’s video

Winning a VMA would be the icing on one layer of a humongous cake for Drake, who is having a stellar 2009.  He’s gone from being a virtual nobody, to networking and hooking up with one of the top rappers right now, Lil’ Wayne, to getting signed to Wayne’s Young Money label.

The only bump in the road has been Drake’s injury.  He tore his ACL a while back, and recently had surgery after he fell and re-injured his leg while on tour.  The other day he talked about the ordeal on his blog:

*************************
This bottle of Opus One is low but my spirits are high my friends. I am about 2 hours away from Toronto, CA where I will be spending the next chunk of time recovering from a surgery that I now must have. I embarked on this tour with a torn ACL, MCL, and LCL and due to the events that happened the other night lord only knows what other damage I have done. On the bright side I will begin the reflecting and soul searching that its going to take to make this album and my outfit on the night I fell was crack. I will forever push myself beyond the limits despite advice and recommendations given because even with this new found success I am still the kid who wanted this more than anything in the world. Its funny when I read comments from previous fans who have lost interest because of the radio play and exposure I have. I just want to assure anyone reading that nothing has changed on my end. I refuse to get comfortable, I refuse to fall in line and follow anyone elses formulas. I still work as if So Far Gone had never dropped and I’m still trying to figure out how I’m going to gain entry to this game.

“Missing someone gets easier everyday. Because, even though it is one day further from the last time you saw each other, it is one day closer to the next time you will”

See you soon.

Drizzy
*************************

We hope he has a speedy recovery, and good luck to Drake that the VMAs!! They air Sunday, September 13th at 9pm on MTV.

Degrassi Goes Hollywood Press Release

The Exec posted the official Canadian Press Release of Degrassi Goes Hollywood.  It’s a LOOONG one so I won’t post any of my own commentary about it:

*********************************

Toronto, ON (August 4, 2009) – It’s a southward migration that happens every year: droves of aspiring actors and musicians from across Canada head to Hollywood in hopes of making it big. Now, as real-life DEGRASSI actors become hotter than ever in Tinseltown, CTV presents the two-hour CTV Summer Movie event PARADISE CITY: DEGRASSI GOES HOLLYWOOD, premiering Sunday, August 30 at 8 p.m. ET. Featuring all-new original musical performances, the CTV Original Movie stars VAMPIRE DIARIES’ Nina Dobrev, Spring Awakening’s Jake Epstein, Cassie Steele, Lauren Collins, Adamo Ruggiero and Stacey Farber.

In the first-ever DEGRASSI: THE NEXT GENERATION movie event, art imitates life following the enormous success of real-life DEGRASSI actors. As Paige and Manny seek the Hollywood spotlight in PARADISE CITY, DEGRASSI actors continue to hit the big time in reality:

Aubrey Graham (Jimmy Brooks), has taken the music scene by storm as rapper Drake; Nina Dobrev (Mia Jones) sees her fame factor multiply this fall as the star of the new CTV/CW big buzz drama THE VAMPIRE DIARIES; Shenae Grimes (Darcy Edwards) begins her second season of 90210; while Jake Epstein (Craig Manning), continues to tour North America as the lead in the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening.

In PARADISE CITY, hopes are realized, dreams are dashed and relationships are changed forever. Manny (Cassie Steele) and the Degrassi gang including Mia (Nina Dobrev), Sav (Raymond Ablack), Danny (Dalmar Abuzeid) and Peter (Jamie Johnston) venture to L.A. on a cross-continent road trip with Manny’s past love Jay (Mike Lobel) at the wheel. Everyone is hoping to score parts in Mewesical High, a big-budget movie musical directed by Jason Mewes under the mentorship of Kevin Smith. But, it’s not all limo rides and personal assistants. The Hollywood experience leads to the rekindling of old flings, a lot of heartache and deep soul searching as the aspiring stars are reminded that the rise to the top isn’t always smooth sailing.

Meanwhile, as personal assistant to reality television star Hailey Montel (DAN FOR MAYOR’s Mary Ashton), Paige (Lauren Collins) is reluctantly accepting that in life you work from the ground up. So when Hollywood hands Paige a shortcut to fame and fortune, she jumps at the opportunity and takes Marco (Adamo Ruggiero) and Ellie (Stacey Farber) along for the ride.

Back in Toronto, Manny (Cassie Steele) has immersed herself in her university theatre program and is committed to becoming an “actor of substance.” Already the star of Jay and Silent Bob Go Canadian, Eh?, Manny blows an opportunity to star in Mewes’ newest feature before she decides to follow her dream and head on a road trip to L.A. to win the back the role.

PARADISE CITY: DEGRASSI GOES HOLLYWOOD is DEGRASSI like you have never seen it before,” said Susanne Boyce, President, Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc. “With a stunning Hollywood backdrop, favourite DEGRASSI cast members and unbelievable guest stars, this movie is a great way to say goodbye to summer.”

PARADISE CITY: DEGRASSI GOES HOLLYWOOD will air on Saturday, September 5 at 9 p.m. ET and 12 a.m. ET on MuchMusic. An encore will air on Sunday, September 6 at 4 p.m. ET on MuchMusic.

Following the television broadcast of PARADISE CITY, the movie will be available on demand on The CTV Video Player at CTV.ca. The movie will be complemented at CTV.ca with two original music videos featuring favourite DEGRASSI cast members, and the behind-the-scenes featurette “Hooray For Hollywood”.

PARADISE CITY: DEGRASSI GOES HOLLYWOOD features musical numbers performed by cast members and guest stars, including “Crash My Party” and “Life is a Show” performed by Cassie Steele. Dance sequences in the movie are choreographed by SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA choreographer Amy Wright. The songs, including “Rescue You” and “Swan Song” performed by Jake Epstein, are featured on the PARADISE CITY: DEGRASSI GOES HOLLYWOOD official soundtrack, “Degrassi Goes Hollywood,” available for sale now online and in retailers across the country on August 25.

PARADISE CITY is a new milestone in the storied DEGRASSI franchise which continues to not only produce stars in front of the camera, but behind the scenes as well. DEGRASSI has had a tremendous impact on the Canadian Film and Television Industry, as writers and producers who started out working under the mentorship of executive producer Linda Schuyler are now some of the most sought-after production executives in the industry. Virginia Thompson, who started out as a junior production assistant on DEGRASSI JUNIOR HIGH, became the executive producer of the hit comedy series CORNER GAS. Sean Reycraft, a story editor on DEGRASSI: TNG, is now a producer on 90210, and Sudz Sutherland, a story coordinator on DEGRASSI, became the director of the award-winning movie DOOMSTOWN and also the series WILD ROSES. Most recently, Stefan Brogren, who played Archie “Snake” Simpson on the original series and the current incarnation, has added producer and director to his credit list, including PARADISE CITY.

“The DEGRASSI franchise has had such longevity as a result of continuing to break barriers, foster innovative ideas and develop stars in the Canadian production community, both behind and in front of the camera,” said Boyce.

“Being part of the DEGRASSI evolution for over half my life has been nothing short of amazing,” said Stefan Brogren, director of PARADISE CITY: DEGRASSI GOES HOLLYWOOD. “Adding producing and directing to my acting credits in the series has been a remarkable experience for me. All the DEGRASSI cast and crew gave me tons of support as I stepped up as director of the movie.”

Returning to the screen for this special Hollywood instalment are DEGRASSI alumni Adamo Ruggiero (Marco), Jake Epstein (Craig), Lauren Collins (Paige), and Stacey Farber (Ellie). Also starring in the movie are DEGRASSI cast members Cassie Steele (Manny), Mike Lobel (Jay), Nina Dobrev (Mia), Raymond Ablack (Sav), Dalmar Abuzeid (Danny) and Jamie Johnston (Peter).

Joining the DEGRASSI cast in PARADISE CITY are acclaimed Director/Producer/Actor Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma) and Jason Mewes (Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Clerks), who play themselves, while scouting talent for and directing the film Mewesical High. The movie also features guest cameos by actresses Kelly Carlson (NIP/TUCK) and Vivica A. Fox (CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM), celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, and Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz. Also, making his dramatic television debut is MTV’s THE AFTER SHOW co-host Dan Levy who plays Robbie, a young Hollywood producer.

“I have only the warmest of thoughts for Canada, and DEGRASSI is an institution there,” said Perez Hilton, PerezHilton.com. “So, now, I hope this officially makes me an honorary Canadian! I had the best time filming my cameo and I can’t wait to watch the movie, like everyone else!”

“I had so much fun shooting Degrassi Goes Hollywood!” said Dan Levy, Host of MTV’s THE AFTERSHOW. “It was my very first acting gig, and I couldn’t have asked to spend it with a better group of people!”

Degrassi Music Monday #1: Drowning by Craig Manning

Welcome to Degrassi Music Monday!  Here’s a good one that I’m sure many people have been searching for…I put together a decent copy of Craig Manning’s “Drowning.”

He performed that song twice (well 1 and 1/2 times) in “What It Feels Like To Be A Ghost” before his coke head nosebleed got the better of him.  Did anyone else feel like giving poor Craig a tissue? Nah…he’s probably snort that too.

Click here to download “Drowning,” by Craig Manning.

“Drowning” Lyrics

I fly too close to the sun
I chase the whale on the run
But I’m, I’m jumpin from mountains
And I’m jumpin from skies
Try to realize my size

What you say when you’re me
What you feel when you see
Drowning in the sea
Drowning close to me
