Happy New Year’s Eve! I’m sure I’ve posted this before, but I love it so I’m posting it again. Every year on this day I take some time to watch the Degrassi’s New Year’s Lockin’ Eve video that was posted by ACES Online several years ago.
On New Year’s Eve of 2002, The-N (now known as TeenNick) aired a Degrassi marathon leading up to the new year. They also had fans voting for the episode they wanted watch at midnight to ring in the new year (according to ACES the episode that won was Weird Science). This aired a year and a half before I discovered Degrassi so I’m not sure of the format, but I’m guessing the Lockin’ Eve scenes aired in between episodes.
Miriam, Cassie, Ryan, Jake G, Jake E, Aubrey, Lauren, Daniel, Melissa and Shane are locked in a room as they “wait for a camera crew” to arrive for their New Year’s countdown. It’s cheesy as hell, but it’s an interactive concept that I wish Degrassi (actually, it’d be in Family Channel’s hands now) would bring back for a new generation over a decade later.
OMG, Jake G. was actually invited to take part in one of The-N’s specials? This is rare indeed. Too bad the network developed their “Nerds are icky!” mentality and ignored him and all of the other actors who portrayed nerdy characters (particularly Liberty and Connor) in all of their promos and behind the scenes things later on (Clare and Maya are seen as “acceptable” nerds, so they don’t count).
