The Alli plot in I Want It That Way faintly reminds me of the Degrassi High episode “Stressed Out,” (you can watch Part 1 HERE, and Part 2 HERE) just in how it tackles a teenager getting worn down because of an overwhelming workload. The thoroughly underrated Dallas is what makes me interested in this plot.
Neither Fiona visiting Imogen’s mom nor Tristan and Fab interacting jump out at me as exciting…I’m not thinking about or trying to predict any of it, and am just taking a wait-and-see approach for the time being.

Q & A
Q: Hey, Kary, I’ve been on a Degrassi dvd binge lately. I’m on season 6 right now. I’ve been wondering, you’ve talked about how in the current season Drew being out of Degrassi and you kind of been losing interest in him because he’s not in the school anymore. And you’ve also mentioned a similar thing about Spinner, Peter and the other graduates. I was wondering what you thought about Jay still having a presence on the show after he was expelled. While expelled, he stayed connected with Spinner and Alex and eventually Manny, but was still not a part of the school anymore, so what are your thoughts?

A: First off, this is an excellent question. I’ve said before that I am not a fan of 1) celebrity cameos, and 2) primary characters being established away from Degrassi. When it comes to celeb cameos I feel like they’re useless because they rarely add anything to the show. Now with that said, I am very excited for Chaz Bono’s upcoming cameo in the episode “Tonight, Tonight” because he’s being brought in and can directly relate to Adam. Degrassi tried twice to show characters in college…the first group (Paige, Ellie, Marco) was decent, but things went downhill quickly when they tried it again Emma, Manny and Liberty. It’s not a bad thing that graduates like Spinner and Peter stayed around for a while, but ultimately they’re forced into a role where they add nowhere near as much to the show as they used to. It’s like watching pro athletes who were once elite, but now have nothing left in the tank and struggle at the end of their career.
The more I watch and think about Degrassi, the more difficult it is to have an all-or-nothing attitude about things. Some parts are good and some are bad, and my thoughts about characters are constantly changing (ex: I like Fiona, but I’m nowhere near as passionate about her as I was in Season 10. Also, I used to hate Marisol with a passion…in Season 12 I’ve shifted to a more positive mindset in regards to her because she hasn’t been acting like a tool lately.) I’m rambling like a moron, but I’d like to think that Jay Hogart is the exception to the rule. He is easily one of Degrassi’s most underrated characters. He had an insane amount of charisma, and you knew that any time he was on screen he had the potential to cause trouble in an instant. They kept in him in that bad boy role even after he’d been expelled. Though he softened up in the later years thanks to Manny, he was still able to keep me interested in his character through it all.

I completely agree with your thoughts about Jay. I always feel like I’m one of the only fans who still considers him one of my top favorite characters to this day; he is very under-appreciated.

Pre-show predictions before I suit up and hit the ice…
Three possibilities of who or what “gets in the way” of Tristan’s feelings for Mr. Fab. Apparently him and Eli interact again, so God forbid, he falls for Eli.
Cam appears in the promo for this episode, and since he is not involved with Alli or Fiona/Imogen, I’m assuming we revisit this scenario… I’ve been patiently waiting.
Lastly, it could simply be Alli blindly slamming into the poor kid. We’ll see.
Now, it’s game time. Hope I don’t punch another helmet tonight.

I think Spinner as Dot Guy was still pretty well integrated events wise, working better than the second attempt college Degrassi (and, in my opinion, better than first attempt College Degrassi, cause I blame a lot of S7 and S8’s lackluster was thanks to S6-S7 being so scattered due to the college cast). He still had enough cast interaction with kids at the school to make him useful (Pete, Jane, Studz, and Holly J.)
Jay meanwhile worked out not due to lots of interactions, but because any and all Jay moments had something positive going. And he didn’t need a lot of interplay to keep him relevant as his very presence moved plots (since he fit more with Dallas, Early Seasons Pete, and Shep as a plot creator as opposed to Plot Protag.)
The issue with Drew is that he doesn’t have those connections being worked in his favor. His exile from the house has him separated from Adam, they cut any interaction with Dallas, leaving him with Fi, Bianca, and Owen (ish). Cell Hut is not central enough to keep bringing cast to him, even if the Mall gets a lot of play. I do love his play against Fi, and Bianca, but he needs more to stay relevant.
