Tonight is the beginning of week 2 of Degrassi: Showdown.  Last week the show came out guns blazing and churned out an awesome week of episodes, so hopefully they can maintain that level of quality throughout this week.  The biggest concern for me of course is the fact that Zig leads the way with the A-plot in Got Your Money.  By default he’s the weakest of the niners, and has yet to show any signs of a personality (dude is as dull as a rock)…but he’s also been on the back burner a majority of the time.  This week is his time to shine and show us what he’s got, and I’m intrigued by his storyline anyway.  Also in this episode Dave gets involved with the play, and Fimogen returns.  I’ve rolled my eyes over Fimogen so much that I’m over it, but hopefully they’ll at least tackle their relationship in an interesting way.

DEGRASSI EXTRA

For those asking about Degrassi Extra my issues with it were confirmed last week:  trying to produce episodes every single night with Degrassi airing at 10pm is just too difficult, aka I’m not going to stay up until 5am every night working on it.  So that’s why Degrassi Extra has moved to the weekends.  If you missed out on the first 4 episodes, you can check them out below:

I’m very skeptical about Dave being in the play. I know we haven’t seen it yet or know how it happens but it seems very out of character for him.

Zig has been given so little screen time that it’s practically like being introduced to a new character.
Until now, certainly, the Degrassi writers have done nothing to fill out the character description released at the start of 11.5.

    Hey Degrassi Fans,

The name’s Jason. I am a first time Canadian poster. I’ve lurked on your discussions many of times prior to this post. DegrassiBlog, DegrassiNation and Degrassi Wikia all seem like really good places to discuss the show, and I’m glad to see you guys have some great admins working behind the scenes to make these sites possible. I’m a fan of the show, although I admit I don’t keep up with it as often as I should. I have a few friends who work with Epitome Pictures on Degrassi (can’t say who they are, but I can tell you that they have been on the production staff for the last three of four years), which is the reason why I started tuning in and watching current seasons.

I’ve noticed that a lot of you guys have been pondering about who from the current “senior” class is staying as a regular after season 12. I feel that this topic has plagued discussion, discussion that should be used in a more meaningful manner. One of my “sources” told me I could spill the beans, as long as I didn’t mention his name, nor mention my own full name. I’ve decided to share this with everyone purely because I hate being left in the dark concerning my own favorite television shows, so I understand and feel your pain.

Following cast members are returning as regulars after season 12 –

    Chloe Rose as Katie Matlin
    Luke Bilyk as Drew Torres
    Justin Kelly as Jake Martin

Why no Munro you ask? Everyone on the production side of the Degrassi set knows that Munro’s portrayal of Eli is give or take the current most popular character on the show. Munro Chambers was approached about appearing as a regular after season 12, but declined the offer in order to work on other projects. He also did not want his character “Eli” to be compromised by being held back another school year. Munro will still be appearing in a recurring/Special Guest Star role for season 13 of the show. He and his agent are still working out negotiations with the producers about the number of episodes, but it is definite that it will be at least six episodes.

My “source” didn’t mention anything about Demetrius Joyette’s role as Mike Dallis, which surprised me because in a previous conversation earlier in the year my source had said Demetrius has been promised “at least two years on the show” when he first landed the role as Mike Dallis. Because of this, I think it would be a safe bet to expect him as a regular for season 13 as well.

Because I do not seem like a credible source, I completely understand if you guys don’t believe me or consider me trustworthy. I do not seem like a legitimate source, and the fact I am not revealing my own name or my own production sources just makes me look a hell of a lot more shady. I’m not trying to cause any trouble, just trying to spread the information I have been given. Take it for what it’s worth.

yeshhhhhhhhh…. i so saw that coming. I’m pretty sure eclare will have “twinkly lights” (hello there were twinkly lights when they got back together) for these 20 episodes, then the real drama will begin when eli gets into NYU and they have to figure out if they/won’t they stay together. I’m really sure eli leaves with fiona for the brighter lights of NYC. That was my guess when he said “NYU,” either that or he doesn’t get in and goes manic.

OOOOOOOhhhh munro i love you even more because most people wouldn’t care about their character as long as they kept WORKING.

So so so sad, but so happy we will at least see him again (hopefully).

I’m surprised Imogen isn’t staying behind. She is the only one of the three kids who came on at the beginning of season 11 (along with Katie and Jake) who isn’t (at least as of now), and she’s the least developed.

People, I wouldn’t take this so seriously. Sure, there’s a chance that he could be correct, but don’t get worked up over Imogen or Bianca not “returning” or Drew still “returning” because this can be one massive troll. I read his post, and I find it interesting, but I’m not gonna start being all “WTF writers, no Imogen? No Bianca? WTF?!?!” because of the (high) chance this will be a massive troll job.

this doesnt make any sense… I mean, the Jake part does – and thank god, because he has barely had any character development. Katie sorta makes sense. She has had the most development of the characters introduced in season 11, but not alot, and i think her emotional struggle this year will take away from her school work and keep her back. Drew… no, just no. He has had his time on the show and I’m tired of him. The writers have been forcing him down our throats in countless A plots since season 10. He needs to go away. Why not keep Imogen? Or Bianca? Imogen hasnt gotten ANY development, and although she will have the A plot in Never Ever, it is still NOTHING compared to the other characters. And Bianca – they have practically wasted her as Drew’s arm candy this whole time. Yes, she had standout moments in Boom Boom Pow and Dead & Gone, and had the A plot in Hollaback Girl, but she can deliver SO much more

I was thinking this, also. I think the fight will come with grave consequences for those of the senior class involved. It makes sense that they be held back due to a possible suspension and not being able to make up their credits.

Who knows. I think the writers are going to do everything they can to keep some of the popular characters on the show for at least another season.

I’m sorry, but I do not believe this. They haven’t even finished filming for the second part of season 12. Why would they already be negotiating contracts? That’s stuff they deal with later on. Filming is the main priority at the moment.

I do expect Fiona to leave and Drew staying behind is realistic. But come on, a lot of this is quite odd information.

I get that the seniors will not stay forever – but it’s still too early to reveal who will go and who will stay. There’s no way any of that has been discussed since filming hasn’t even finished.

You would be surprised how early the production and writing staff begin planning this stuff. They need to figure everything out before they film the graduation scenes, which will be filming in a few months (They are heading into a filming break right now, I believe they are filming the L.A. Complex during this time, not sure if you guys have it in the US but it’s a drama airing in Canada and produced by Epitome). The schedule for contract negotiations works differently than they did pre-season 10 due to the fact that the writer’s have more episodes to write and less time to do it (they film four episodes in a week now, while in pre-season 10 they only filmed two per week). The production staff is already planning what characters they can promote and put on advertisements and promotional material. Nothing is set in stone yet, but I gave you a list of actors who have already met with the producers and verbally agreed (with their agent’s consent) to be on the show after season 12. The list of actors I gave you will likely be the characters you see in the opening credits next year, despite Demetrius (Mike Dallis) who I haven’t received exact confirmation yet.

Part of me believes this is true. The writers have to know who is returning for the next season before they can begin writing scripts. The producers have to figure out contracts and re-sign actors before the writing process can begin, so maybe it’s true that Munro decided not to participate next season. I think Eli has had a good run and I’m kind of tired of so many characters being held back just to stretch out plots. Of course, it will be at least a year before anything is confirmed, so all we can do is wait and hope our favorites return.

Degrassi has really became an extremely violent school. Its either in or having students in violent confrontatiins. Being tased, getting thrown through glass doors, having street fights, almost getting stabbed, a gang jumping and a school shooting. Thatz a lot… Also, I wonder where does Eli learn how to fight because before he constantly got bitched by Fitz.lol. Excuse my French

I looooovee me some Dallas. Even though Fiona’s gay I just loved the playful interaction. It’s refreshing to see a guy with balls, we haven’t seen a guy like him in a while. I mean we could say Owen, but Owen’s character has been useless thus far. I hope to see more of Fallas in the future! Speaking of Fiona, isn’t anyone sad that Fiona and Marisol are now friends? What happened to Fimogen getting Marisol and Katie back :(

Becky is…..she is like a nun on crack :/. She comes to a NEW school, wants to take over a play where she must know that some students would be established in that council, and then when she doesn’t get her way, LEAVES and now she’s trying to ruin the show. WHO DOES THAT

Zori was so cute! FINALLY I ship them as a couple. It’s interesting bc Zig acted the way he always does in previous Zori interaction, deflecting from a situation and making Tori upset, but now we see why he does certain things, it’s because he’s insecure in himself with the relationship. Really interesting how the writers played with his perspective. And the kiss was so cute at the end…so innocent and eager. Reminds me of my grade 9 days. Great episode

I like Dave’s storyline but Degrassi Writers! Dave cannot sing! Continuity issue much? Oh how I missed my Fiona and I really like her interactions with Mike Dallas (i like Mike a lot, he’s so much fun to hate). I really hope part.2 dwelves more with how Imogen feels about their relationship. She’s obviously not ready to take the next step.

I’m not sure wether to believe the post about the seniors that will or will not graduate above. I’m thinking maybe it’s false because the writers and other people involved with degrassi have all been asked that question repeatedly and none have answered with anything other than “we can’t tell you” or stuff like that. I find it unlikely that a member of epitome would reveal the information and allow a guy that has no direct involvement with the show to share it this far in advance. (The actual graduation will probably air April/May 2013). And share it on the comments section on a blog site of all places. It might be true, but at the same time, anybody could’ve written it, so I wouldn’t believe anything too quickly until we receive actual proof on the matter.

Tonight’s episode was really good. Zig’s plot was surprisingly good. Sure it is a setup for next week’s episode but I’m glad they ended it with Zig not paying for the meal. Like everyone has said, Zori shows some emotion than the last time a plot was focused on them. Same for Zig, Ricordo was great showing Zig’s insecurity about his relationship with Tori and if he can give her special gifts. We’ll have to see how Part 2 plays out.

Dave’s plot was amazing. Especially the scene where he pretended to be gay by using a gay stereotype and then Eli’s reaction haha. It was natural for Dave to feel the way he did because he originally thought this was Romeo and Juliet–The Musical. The singing scene between Tristan and Dave was great in addition to the look on Alli’s face. The ending gave us the idea that Dave will be probably harassed by homophobic students.

Fiona’s plot was a bit boring because it is obviously a setup for what happens in Part 2. However, I did like how Imogen was uncomfortable with the way Fiona was trying to prove to the hockey guys that she was a lesbian. It gives a prelude to the Fimogen drama that could happen in the near future.

Zig: I can’t say I’m disappointed because I wasn’t really expecting much from him. Thus far, Zig has proven to be very static. While I think it’s easy to sympathize with him, I can’t truly feel sorry about his situation because I just don’t care about his character that much, nor do I care for him and Tori’s relationship very much. I don’t necessarily blame this on Alex and Ricardo, but more so on the writers who failed to get us emotionally invested in their relationship. I mean, they’ve had one plot about it and by the end most people were rooting for Zig and Maya. Honestly, I hope part two gets better with Zig stealing and dealing with it and Tori and the band.

Dave: Jahmil has become one of the best male actors on the show alongside Munro and Luke, his performance proves it. I think it’s safe to say we all sense Dave’s discomfort with the change and his hesitation is realistic. My concern is the lack of development behind the why he joined and why he’s sticking to it. So what if Alli gets busy? Dave in the play is out of left field. No matter. I am interested in seeing how the point of view of Dave plays out in a brawl between Eli and the hockey team and how Dave handles the controversial nature of the play. I am definitely looking forward to part two provided Dave is centered on, not Eli.

Fiona: The rushed mess of this plot bothers me and the possibility of a Fiona and Imogen reunion in the next part does as well (I’d much rather see the situation from Imogen’s point of view next episode rather than it wrap up in part two). While we can all agree that it must’ve been hard for Fiona to be rejected by Imogen after everything, there’s almost no reason to care because Fimogen hasn’t been established enough for us to truly care about them. I don’t even know how to save this plot especially because the only solid part is Dallas’s immaturity and overconfident ego.

    WhisperHug: I AM CONCERNED!

ZZZZZZZ was all I thought about Zig’s plot. He’s boring and the actor is flat and not believable. I don’t care about Tori and Zig’s relationship because it’s so superficial and shallow on Tori’s part.

Dallas is disgusting and so Becky. If Becky’s parents are so conservative, why didn’t they just send her to a private school? If your child goes to public school, they’re going to encounter plenty of people who weren’t raised like them and who are different. I don’t like any of the new characters. They don’t add anything interesting to the show and are just foils for the main characters.

Fiona and Imogen??! I shook my head at this one. Maybe Fiona’s pushing too much to get Imogen into admitting they’re a couple. Fiona used to be such a good character and Annie Clark is a great actress, but it feels like they’ve run out of ideas for her and Imogen, for that matter. Imogen’s another useless character. I never liked her or cared much for the actress. The writers need to separate the couples and give them individual plots like they’re doing with Eli and Clare, for instance. Heck, even Marisol and Mo have separate stories this season. It’s a shame that this show is mostly about relationships and only skims the surface on other issues.

In all honesty, it kinda of annoys me when people think that just because a character’s plot is about a relationship, it means the writers have run out of ideas for them. I mean I may sound a little biased because Fiona IS my favorite character, but I really don’t see why everyone’s complaining so much about her. She is the lesbian on the show, therefore some of her storyline is going to be about girls. In my opinion, her developing a crush on Imogen was completely realistic. I don’t know, there’s been a lot of other relationships that pretty much appeared out of the blue (Jake/Katie and Mo/Marisol come to mind), but people seem to be fine with that. I just don’t see why people are hating on something when, like a lot of people have said, it hasn’t even had a ton of development yet.

Anyways, I’m looking forward to tonight. I’m glad they’re finally introducing Luke’s character. Definitely gonna be interesting.

Well Fiona IS my favorite character, and I’ve been frustrated with how they’re using her character. After Holly J left they had an amazing opportunity to deal with Fiona having to be on her own socially, and the show blew it. It’s not a matter of her crush on Imogen being realistic, it’s the fact that we’ve already had to sit through her having a crush on her close female friend before. And don’t forget the pointless relationship she had with Charlie. Fiona’s now a one-trick pony because all she ever deals with is relationships. Marco…Riley…the majority of their tenures on the show were spent beating us over the head with the same dilemmas in regards to their sexuality, and now the same thing has been happening to Fiona. The difference between Fimogen and the other random couples you mentioned is that Jake/Katie and Mo/Marisol all have storylines and/or interactions outside of each other. Fiona is now dependent on Imogen, just like she was dependent on Holly J. Imogen was only ever used to advance Eli’s plot, as well as Fiona’s, and even now she’s branching out on her own by joining WhisperHug. But Fiona? She’s still just there being useless as usual. Even putting her in a role like Adam and Jake where she’s just a support character to others is better than her having to deal with the same things over and over.

I really like that they’re starting to add depth to Zig, because before now he was just Tori’s boyfriend, nothing more. But this episode was so predictable. I knew before the opening credits that they would end up diner-dashing at Little Miss Steaks (which was really dumb, by the way, because wouldn’t they run into Marisol at school?)

My predictions for part 2: Zig is going to continue to steal to make Tori happy. He’ll probably steal jewelry or something. But he’s going to get caught and he’ll confess, saying he “just wanted to make Tori happy” and he didn’t want her to think he wasn’t good enough for her. Tori will end up forgiving him and all will be dandy again. Zig will probably have to wash dishes at Little Miss Steaks to make up for the unpaid meal. It won’t be anything special because Ricardo isn’t the best actor in the world. I think it will be a pretty forgettable episode in the long run, but I hope I’m wrong.

For me, Dave stole the whole show. That stereotypical gay acting he was doing was hilarious. And I think it says a lot about his growth on his show that he’s willing to play the part of a gay lover.

Fiona has a point about Imogen randomly deciding to join a band maybe she did it to avoid Fiona. She also purposely changed her schedule around to which is pretty fucked up. I’m confused about Imogen at this point she flip flops alottt first she portrayed to be the wacko weird girl who will do. whatever it takes to get the guy (Eli) she got him and then backed away when she realized she couldn’t handle him. Now she’s rejecting Fiona once she made it crystal clear that her feelings were mutual WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH IMOGEN! not to mention her character description was wayyyyyyyyyy off!!

I know this is somewhat random, but was I the only person that squealed like a school girl when Dave mentioned the show Happy Endings? Degrassi and Happy Endings are my two FAVORITE shows on tv right now, and Degrassi referencing them made my night because Happy Endings ALSO referenced Degrassi (Junior High) in an episode( at which point I also squealed like a school girl).
I also cracked up at the fact that Dave youtubed Derrick from Happy endings becausehe was specifically brought on that show because one character wanted to have a stereotypical “gay husband” to do “girly” stuff with because her best friend is a gay guy who’s basically a “straight guy who sleeps with dudes”.So basically Dave youtubed a show which features a gay main character that is the least stereotypical on the planet, but somehow watched the handful of clips/episoded with the one character that was offensively stereotypically gay.
I’ll stop rambling needlessly now, and smile at the fact that these shows basically high-fived.
