Everyone wants to be Clare Edwards these days.

This week we finally get back into the groove with episodes being two parters from here on.  Episode reviews will now come on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Tuesday night could be a clusterfuck as far as the review for CMAR and Degrassi Extra for CMAR Pt 2, but we’ll see.

CRY ME A RIVER PART 1
Dave voices his discomfort regarding Adam being transgender over the in-school radio show airwaves, and experiences the school turning against him. Freedoms previously assumed are reexamined.

I can’t wait for this storyline. That is all.

Tonight is REAL introduction of Katie Matlin. DJGENERAL recently did an interview with Chloe Rose, who plays Katie. CLICK HERE to read his interview!! You can also check out his podcast, he’s doing podcast episodes after every epsiode of Now or Never.

The Degrassi Experience girls will be doing a live show tonight on blogtv. While they and many others do vlogs, very few host livestream discussions about the show (the cast does more livestream stuff than fans).  You can follow them on twitter to find out when the livestream will be happening.

Q&A

Hey!  I just wanted to know If Degrassi would be casting again for seaon 12 or any other part in the future, if so i would absolutely love it if you could let me know! I would love to be on Degrassi but i live in America. Thanks so much for reading this! Bye (:

-Cynclaire

Yes Degrassi will be casting at some point for Season 12. However, since you’re not a Canadian citizen you’re not eligible to be on the show. Having Canadian citizenship (or being a resident) is THE number 1 requirement for auditioning on the show.

__________

Hi, I was wondering if you knew what happened to the Blu-ray release of Season 9? I remember awhile back it was rumored that it will infact get a Blu-ray release but it never did. I know you don’t work with Epitome, Alliance or Echo Bridge Entertainment so you probably don’t know but maybe you might since you know a lot about Degrassi. Or if maybe you can find out? And if any of the future seasons will be released on Bluray?

-Freddy

I have absolutely no clue…and there’s stories on the web about how it was happening, but I couldn’t find actual evidence of Degrassi on blu-ray’s existence.  I’m sure Stephen Stohn has addressed this, but I can’t remember what he said. If anyone happens to know anything about this, let us know!!

__________

does anyone know if its true…if degrassi’s ending this season?

-nanah

Degrassi has already been confirmed for a 12th season…so Degrassi will be around through at least spring of 2013.

___________

If you had a teenage daughter, would you let her date a guy like Eli?

-Anonymous

After crashing Morty? My initial response would be no. I can understand that he’s going through a lot of stuff emotionally, but the number one priority of mine would be to protect my daughter.  Wanna know why so many girls have issues these days? Because they get tangled up in fucked up relationships.  If he can get the help he needs and show he’s truly committed to the road of recovery then I’d be for them trying to make it work down the road eventually. But I don’t want my 15 or 16-year-old daughter (HEAVY emphasis on 16-year-old) dating someone who at the moment can barely manage their own life.

  9. This Adam storyline was a bit too heavy-handed today. He should have been using the “shenis” the whole time and Dave come upon him from the start. They could have avoided their first awkward encounter. I didn’t really think they set this up properly because from my POV, both times were designed to make me feel sorry for Adam. Like I said, a bit too much all at once.

Fiona and Charlie are mega-boring. They really need to put the kibosh on them because this would truly be FF material if I was taping. Fiona on her own is kind of a weak character, so she has to rely on her supporting characters, which was why Adam and HJ made her semi-interesting. I really have no desire to see her forge a relationship with this random isolated newbie.

Do school newspapers not have teacher aides watching over the paper operations? No way would a Grade 11 be the sole one in charge of hiring a new columnist. Speaking of Grade 11’s, there are a lot of them on this show: Marisol, Katie, Imogen, Eli, Owen, Bianca, Drew, Jake. Did I miss anyone? There’s going to be a mass exodus after next season.

    ZANE tomorrow! Holla!!

    2. I’m sure the newspaper has a faculty adviser, but student editors tend to have a lot of freedom. Otherwise, the newspaper wouldn’t be as much of a voice for student issues. I remember at my college paper, we were given almost complete freedom (for better or for worse). The editors (of which I was one at one point) were given complete control of who was on staff. At my high school paper, the editors really didn’t control who worked there, but that was because it was considered a class so they were stuck with whoever got into the class. This appears to be different because it seems to be purely an extracurricular activity, so people can come and go as the please, as opposed to adding or dropping a class.

fiona’s plot didn’t matter to me so i’ll go onto clare’s.

clearly, clare is still suffering from her break-up. i don’t blame katie in any way for not accepting her article. she told her 100 words. in my opinion, clare thinks very high of herself as a writer, she doesn’t need to follow 100 words, anyone would just accept her. i really liked this subplot.

  15. Dave gets NO hate from me because, Dave was wrong to flare his issues with Adam’s transgender-ness over the Degrassi airwaves. HOWEVER Adam didn’t give him much room at all to figure things out. Adam shouldn’t have flung his STP out if he’s just getting used to it. Also he should of at least tried to explain what it was to Dave rather that just fling that thing out. More so of the times a person would react like Dave in that situation than how everyone here on tumblr is taking Adam’s side because MOST PEOPLE DON’T UNDERSTAND. So at least take it upon yourself if you are going to use a STP in front of someone you consider a “friend” (or whatever they were at the beginning of the episode) to explain “Oh hey I’m using this to pee so don’t freak out, I’m trans remember?” (or at least something along those lines). So don’t give Dave hell when he was in some ways set up for a freak out by Adam.

  22. I liked this episode. Nt the best one ever but it was fair. The Dave/Adam plot was good. I thought that Dave was supposed 2 be a dick 2 Adam the whole time but he was only a dick the last 3-5 minutes. Adam was looking @ Dave pee which made him feel awkward & uncomfortable. Then Dave felt curious about the STP so even though Dave was wrong 2 talk about everything on the radio u hav 2 look @ things from his POV. I still think that if Dave & Adam just sat dwn & talked about everything then the whole situation could have been avoided. The Fiona storyline bored me 2 tears. The only pt that I was interested in was when they were in class. Finally the Clare plot. If she woulda jus followed orders nothing would hav happened. But I like Katie. My predictions: when Dave locks himself in the radio I think it will be to apologize.

  23. I personally enjoyed the episode, though I was expecting a much bigger transphobic rant on Dave’s part.

I can understand where Adam’s coming from. He wants to prove that he’s just as much a guy as Dave is. He didn’t want to discuss his “issues” with Dave, because he wants Dave to see him as an equal, and doesn’t want to draw attention to being trans, especially since he’s a co-host on a guy-oriented radio show. Adam views the men’s washroom as a major obstacle in becoming accepted as a male, so given the circumstances, he was all too eager to walk in with Dave, and watch how he uses a urinal. It may not have been the best choice, since he isn’t friends with Dave, but Adam is a KID IN HIGHSCHOOL. All highschool students do silly things in an effort to be accepted by their peers.

And given the situation, I think it’s understandable that Dave reacted the way he did. I do not condone his actions by any means, but a) the washroom is a sacred place for males, and b) Dave is also a kid in highschool who has not had much (if any) experience with members of the LGBT community. He doesn’t know how to talk about this. So I’m glad that I walked away from this episode without HATING Dave. I don’t think he was portrayed as the bratty monster we were expecting to see. He was portrayed as a typical teenage boy who needs some sensitivity training.

I think that the story was handled well. Maybe people’s disappointment stems from the fact that it wasn’t as dramatic as My Body is a Cage? People seem upset that they didn’t feel “sorry enough” for Adam. I don’t want to feel sorry for him! I don’t want to see every Adam story be some epic drama. I don’t want to see his character treated with kid gloves, either. I want him to be treated like all of the other male characters. I want him to make awkward teenage mistakes without getting all weepy-eyed for him.

I also liked Fiona’s plot. I thought it was nice and subtle, and I’m glad to see Charlie again. But how the hell old was that Elise chick? Like 38?

  26. I liked this episode, but I feel like it was missing something in each plot.

I was especially excited for the Dave/Adam plot. I think the setup up for the whole rant was pretty good, but the rant didn’t seem “intense” enough for me. I was expecting something a lot more offensive. Not that I I didn’t think that was offensive, I just think it could’ve been more. I am eager to see the consequences of his actions. Also, I’m so excited to see Zane without Riley by his side. I want to learn more about his character.

The Fiona plot wasn’t the most interesting. I personally don’t like Charlie that much, as she comes off as very abrasive. From the previews, it looks like her little fling with Charlie might be ending next episode anyways. And I can’t believe she is going to be stuck at degrassi next year!

I liked the Clare plot. I like Katie from what I saw of her. But I don’t know why he won’t talk to Clare at all. I mean, it is a silly sample writing. I’m interested to see what happens next.

  27. I think that this plot will begin to bring about a change in Dave’s character, this season. It really emphasized his own insecurities with regards to his own masculinity. From his debut on the series, Dave was picked on by bigger “manlier” guys. He’s short. He hung out with the “nerds”, ie. not exactly the paragons of masculinity. He was desperate in the first few episodes of season 9 to have everyone know who he was. His first crush, Jenna, pretended that HE dumped HER in order to keep Dave’s reputation as a “stud” intact. Alli rejected him for beefcake Drew. He almost didn’t go for Sadie because he didn’t want a girlfriend who was taller than him.

Dave has gone to great lengths to prove his own masculinity, so it’s very interesting to see him interact with another character who is even more desperate to do the same thing. I think that this will be the wake up call Dave needs to get his feet back on the ground. I think that he’ll become something of a pariah for a bit, but I think that his relationship with Alli will develop as a result of her knowing how it feels to be ostracized.

  28. So first off, the episode seemed short and unfinished because it’s only part one. I think because last week we didn’t have any two part episodes, this one seemed a bit unclimatic.

    No, on to the episode:

Adam/Dave – I can understand Dave’s uncomfortableness. However, that is no excuse for calling out Adam and transgendered people as a whole in front of the whole school. A lot of people are saying they ‘don’t feel bad for Adam.’ The idea isn’t to feel bad for Adam; the idea is to be enraged with Dave. Personally, I didn’t like him from the begining when he said Adam shouldn’t host because he is transgendered. That small comment right there at the begining of the episode showed Dave’s opinion on Adam from the start. That comment basically set up the rest of the episode as Dave’s ignorance towards the transgendered community soared. Sadie defending Adam also was a small, but important thing to note. Her standing up for him while Dave wasn’t really on the offensive shows just how supportive people are of Adam as a person. It’s a good setup for the general Dave hatred next part. I think Dave’s rant should’ve been longer and more intense but when you think about it, as a transgendered student listening to Dave, it was very offensive and uncalled for. We also need to remember that he will pull more stunts in part two of Cry Me A River and just have to wait and see how far he goes.

Fiona/Charlie – This plot seemed very fillerish and just a plot for future setup of the Fiona/Eli friendship and of a possible Fiona/Charlie breakup or hook up (not sure which, but assuming breakup). It was very low key and barely there, but perhaps it picks up in part two. Fiona’s mom didn’t really seem necessary but I can see why they put her there for a little added drama and for an excuse for Charlie and Fiona not to be talking. This plot was also used to announce that Fiona will be staying back a year due to credits (shocker…….that was sarcasm btw). Part of me hopes that Charlie and Fiona get together so that they can focus more on Fiona at school as an individual. But a bigger part of me hopes things totally end between them because I think Fiona should have to explore lesbianism in high school and have to deal with making new friends – a skill she seems to lack. I also don’t think the writers would keep her with an isolated character for two full seasons when that character isn’t a reoccuring character or a student of Degrassi.

Clare/Katie – This plot seemed a bit random. We all know Clare ends up on the paper and is forced, by Katie, to spend time with Eli. I think the reason for the Katie/Clare conflict was to set it so that Katie forces Clare to talk with Eli because she doesn’t like her. Now, this was our introduction to Katie Matlin. To be honest, she didn’t come off quite as cold as expected. In her defense, she did tell Clare to write 100 words and was right in saying kids wouldn’t read 5 pages. As for Clare, I’ll admit that going above and beyond is always good and so Katie didn’t need to be so harsh on her. But, as we know from interviews, Katie is very set in life. She knows what she is doing and when and doesn’t want drama or anything crazy in her life. I am really looking forward to seeing more of Katie Matlin and her character development this season.

    Extra stuff:

Enjoyed some more Eli/Adam friendship even during an awkward conversation. It’s nice to see that the writers didn’t totally isolate Eli from the world after his breakdown in season 10.

I am really looking forward to seeing Eli and Fiona interact. Here’s the thing though, Eli is Adam’s bestfriend, I’d expect Adam to be brought up in converstaion at least once during their whole friendship.

Next part of the episode, I want to see Drew ignoring Dave and Saide breaking up with him. First off, I want Sadie to end it because that’ll hit Dave hard and will show how even his own girlfriend doesn’t like what he did. Drew is very protective of Adam, and even though he and Dave are really close, it would be nice to see him hating of Dave for what he did to his brother. This would also really hurt Dave and push him to apologize and stuff.

I liked to see that in the Katie/Clare plot, it wasn’t just Katie and Clare. Normally, in a plot like this, we would pretty much only see Katie and Clare as they duke it out. But it was nice to see Alli and Marisol in supporting roles as they interacted with Clare and Katie throughout the plot.

Lastly, so in the new characters promo, we see Katie laughing with Adam while holding a black shirt. Now, I could be wrong, but I’m assuming it’s the black shirt that Sav had made for Mono A Mono with Dave and Adam. That would be a very excellent way by the writers to tie plots together and make characters interact more smoothly and the plots flow more casually.

    1. I agree with most of what you’ve said. Dave’s comments from the start show that he doesn’t respect Adam. As the episode goes on, it’s very clear that he just doesn’t view him as a guy (hence saying he’ll be back instead of expecting him to follow him into the bathroom). The interesting thing is that Adam actually trusts Dave to be cool (“if Dave can’t handle this, then who can?” he says to Eli), and he flat out gives him the opportunity to say something (he asks what his problem is). Dave, on the other hand, is rude all the way, even snatching his hand away (as if Adam was making a pass or you could catch the trans or something…). He only does the show with Adam because people like it, not because he likes or respects Adam and he makes that clear several times. If he had beef, why not deal with it when the opportunity presented itself? Why do it on air?

And to get mad because someone looked at you while you peed and then do the same thing back…curiosity or not, that’s hypocritical.

Also, from my limited experience with my trans friends, Adam not “announcing” what he was doing makes sense. He doesn’t want to be seen as a trans kid…he wants to be seen as a guy. Why would he go explaining to strangers that sort of thing? It’s frankly none of their damned business. If he wants to be treated like a guy, then he wants to do things guys typically do, like pee standing up. He was trying to show he’s just one of the guys. Yeah, sure, Dave can be confused by that, but Adam did not have to explain himself.

You bring up a good point with the Fiona/Eli friendship. Geez, his best friend might befriend his ex, his brother dated the girl who wouldn’t dance with him…where are the loyalties, people?

  29. some real thoughts July 26, 2011 at 12:15 am

these are my opinions/thoughts about tonight’s episode:

i agree with some of the folks on here that are talking about how dave and adam are both in the wrong. dave should have never said all that stuff on air. it is wrong to say stuff like that on the air. adam should have never tried to “force dave to like him”. you cant force people to like you. i like how you can feel/see the emotions that this storyline brings. i think that the team [actors, writers, director(s)] did a great job in portraying this.

fionna needs to just focus on herself & graduating, especially since she’s being held back. she should not let those 11th graders get to her, especially since she’s older than them. she should also not let charlie get to her. i like how the writers are giving her character more storylines that are focused on her other problems other than the issues that only lesbians face.

    i like charlie’s style, however i think she might be a playa…..

i actually have worked on my high school yearbook staff & newspaper staff so i do know a good deal about journalism. yea, there should definitely be a teacher/advisor that governs who should be let onto the staff. in fact, if there wasnt one, the paper can get shut down. but that’s in real life though. this is degrassi…..

clare’s pretty much a hot mess now. lol. first, she needs to get over eli ASAP. second, she needs to start listening to others & taking their advice & stop acting like she knows everything. & third, she needs a reality check and to realize that she is not super woman.

katie is keeping it real, however, it seems like she has some problems of her own.

& i like marisol’s style so far, lol.

  30. I found this episode interesting. For now, I’m not completely sorry for Adam, but his curiosity to become more masculine is understandable & Dave’s reaction and uncomfortableness (yes that’s a word lol) is totally relatable (until he let out his feelings to the school that is).

Imogen, you’re clever lol. As for Fiona, she is still struggling with her dependency on other’s and he lack of social abilities, as she told Holly J “I inherited you from Declan.” Her and Charlie are a bit boring though, but then again this is only part one.

Clare’s plot seems more of a way to introduce Katie’s character rather than focus on Clare.

  31. God damn how many classes does Mrs. Dawes teach? Art, English, and now drama?

    1. Well, it’s not like she’s teaching them all at once. Though I would love to go to her disc-spinning class!

Kwan taught a drama class as well. “Never Gonna Give You Up,” if I recall correctly. Plus, someone’s gotta make up for the fact that Armstrong will teach entire courses on only polynomials.

Whenever you watch those “every degrassi ever” marathons, he’s always right there when a fight breaks out. it was very rare if it’s someone else like Snake or Raditch.

  32. The real question in regards to the Dave/Adam conflict is who would win if their families fought. Obviously, Mama Torres would annihilate Officer Turner by paralyzing him with her banshee scream and her bitch glare. However, Chantay has her Post-It Notes, and would paper cut Drew to a bloody pulp (well, until Drew learns to cage fight). I’m now taking bets on Mama Torres vs. Chantay. They have pretty equal bitch glares, so this could be an even match.

  33. Adam didn’t do anything wrong I don’t think any of us who are not trans can understand what it must be like re learning simple things like using the bathroom the “right way” In some ways he’s like a child all over again and so it makes sense that he’d be curious as to how dave was standing at the urinal in the same way a little boy would be if he saw an older man. I do think that adam should have practiced more with the standing an peeing device thing before trying it at school but he has a guys mentality he wants to prove he can do everything just like the other guys can and i think even more so given what he’s going through. I think given dave’s character he didn’t at first act as bad as he could have but if he had such a problem with adam he could have easily just quit the radio show.

i just hope they don’t wrap it up all nice and tidy like they did with the weasley taser thing because that was ridiculous. adam needs to stand up for himself.

    1. It wasn’t okay for him to stare at him like that at the urinal. Even the most understanding person would be creeped out. That i don’t think stemmed from any dislike of Adam being Trans, just the awkwardness of having his space invaded while he’s using the bathroom.

      1. Adam was just staring at Dave’s posture from behind. Sure, that’s kinda creepy and definitely inappropriate, but it’s not THAT bad. Dave’s the one who craned his neck around to watch Adam at the urinal and got all up in his business.
And why did Adam apologize for that? He was just startled because someone was trying to look at his nether regions while he was peeing. Who wouldn’t be startled?

  35. So I could feel the awkward the entire time watching this episode, haha. I felt like every character had to deal with an awkward situation, makes me not miss high school all that much, hah.

I think a lot of people expected to despise Dave’s guts after this episode, but his discomfort was actually understandable. After all, he’s a 15-year-old boy with probably zero knowledge of the LGBT community. Adam didn’t do much to ease his discomfort, not that I blame him either. He just wants to be accepted as a normal guy, yanno? However, the way Dave handled his discomfort at the end was the undeniable asshole move. Still shocked he said “trannie” on air. I know people think the rant wasn’t “intense” enough, but if I heard that in my high school, I’d be highly offended. Can you imagine how offended the LGBT community is? So now I’m thinking the writers purposely wrote this episode to be less one-sided and more ambiguous. Adam made some not-so-smart moves too. The question is, how is Simpson going to react to all this? Lately, he’s been slowly becoming more lenient, and I’d hate for this uniform crap to continue too much longer. Can’t wait to see the repercussions tonight!

Anyone notice that meaningful look Eli gave to Fiona as she was leaving the drama room? You can tell he definitely sympathizes with her feeling of being an outcast. I think now I’m actually intrigued in the Eli/Fiona friendship they’ve been talking about.

I’m trying to so hard to withhold real judgment on Imogen until her true introduction on Wednesday, but she did not make it easy for me in this episode. Her response to Fiona really was rude and unfriendly.

  37. @Cody Are you implying Adam’s a girl? Because he’s a guy, just because he has a female body doesnt mean he shouldnt be able to enter the guys bathroom like every other guy.

    1. Okay so if a guy one day was like oh, okay I have a guys body but I’m actually a girl so I’m going to use the girls bathroom from now on. No, that doesn’t work. If you’re born with a boy body you are a boy. If you are born with a girls body you a girl. I don’t see how people think they are a different gender when they can just look down at themselves and the answer is right there.

      2. When someone is transgender, it’s like that person is trapped in a body of the wrong sex. While Adam may physically be female, emotionally HE is not. It’s like taking you out of your own body and putting you into a girl’s. That wouldn’t make you a girl, it would simply make you look like one. Like Adam said in the latest episode, trans kids don’t get a choice in what body they’re born into. “Looking down at themselves” isn’t the answer to changing who they are. It’s the same with people who are different sexual orientation, race and colour. We are all different, and disliking someone just because they aren’t what you consider “normal” is wrong. The world is not just black and white. You need to accept the fact that not everyone is like you.

Ok, so (assuming you are a guy) imagine you have girl parts and are therefore treated and expected to think, act, feel, etc. like a girl. It would get REALLY old REALLY fast. You’re no longer allowed to do things that guys do, even if it seems “right” for you.

If that’s too hard for you to imagine, imagine being trapped in the body of a tortoise without any tortoise insects or skills and the mind of a human, with everyone treating you as a tortoise. It would suck.

I think people like you just lack imagination. If you just put yourself in a trans person’s shoes it’s actually quite easy to understand that sex (your genitals, chromosomes, etc.) are separate, and for some, different from your gender (your mind, your feelings, how you see yourself, etc.)

I mean, do you also think sex and love are the same? That beautiful people are nice and ugly people are mean? That black people are genetically supposed to act one way and white people are genetically supposed to act another?

      5. Lol, your definition of what it’s like to be transgender just topped mine simply because you incorporated tortoises into what you were saying. I don’t see how it would be easier to picture yourself in the body of a tortoise than of the opposite sex, but it made me laugh. :P

      6. It’s all in their head. They are not really what they think they are. If you are born with male or female parts you are that GENDER! Okay, God made people the way they are the moment they’re born. He did not make people to be in one gender’s body but fell as if they are not that gender.
