CTV just announced in a press release a tad bit of info about the new TV series Degrassi Executive Producers Linda Schuyler and Stephen Stohn have been talking about creating:

**********
For MuchMusic and CTV and from the internationally acclaimed and Gemini Award-winning Epitome Pictures producing team of Linda Schuyler and Stephen Stohn (DEGRASSI) comes the six-episode one-hour drama HIGHLAND GARDENS (working title). Executive Produced and written by Martin Gero (Bored to Death, Young People F*cking), HIGHLAND GARDENS follows the ins and outs of an apartment-style motel in LA which draws aspiring Canadian hopefuls looking for a place to rest their heads while they chase their Hollywood dreams. Production is scheduled to begin in Summer 2011.

“The production orders reinforces CTV’s priority in delivering critically acclaimed original programming with compelling storytelling to a wide Canadian audience,” said Susanne Boyce, President, Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc. “We look forward to working with the talented writers and producers behind these exciting new projects.”

Linda and Stephen are currently in NYC, and Stephen said one of the reasons he’s there is to talk with TeenNick about potentially picking up the series.  There’s no word on whether any past or present members of the Degrassi cast and crew will be involved with this new series.

  5. “LA” and “chase their Hollywood dreams”. :(

I think most of us wanted a show that takes place in Canada and doesn’t have to do with the cliche “teens trying to become famous” aspect. And if this is the spin-off Stohn has been talking about, then I wonder which character(s) from Degrassi will be in this show???

  6. Speaking of which, whenever a Degrassi cast member does pop up somewhere after leaving the show, it almost always seems to be random. Just now, I saw the person who played Ashley’s mother in ‘Finding John Christmas’ on Hallmark. Also strange how Jake Epstein played the Beast in Beauty And The Beast. My school is putting on a musical production of Beauty And The Beast, and I’m auditioning for the part. Something I find quite funny and creepy at the same time is that the dude who played Dean plays ANOTHER rapist in ‘We Were The Mulvaneys’ which I saw on Lifetime Movie Network a couple of weeks back.

  7. Hmm… I’m not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, the concept sounds tired and verging on cliche. On the other hand, I love Degrassi and like Instant Star, so the show certainly has pedigree. Especially if it ends up being the supposed Degrassi spin-off. I guess we’ll have to see. Stephen and Linda have my vote of confidence right now.

  9. hmmm, the concept sounds a little…not the greatest but it could be interesting. The only people that they could use from degrassi would be Manny and Paige, because those were the two in hollywood trying to get famous. right? cause marco is a teacher, emma and spinner got married, shawn and ashley left the show. obv not toby. and jimmy sure as heck isn’t coming back.

  10. Oh no no no no they have to drop that storyline! There much be hundreds of shows about people following their dreams. They need to be more original.

Hopefully if they bring their great Degrassi Storytelling to the show then it should be fine ( at least better than Gigantic JS)

    1. Oh here is more info

“It’s not like most shows about Hollywood,” said Gero. “It’s an interesting companion piece to ‘Entourage.’ It’s about young Canadians trying to make it in Los Angeles, from actors to a budding hip-hop producer who’s working as an intern. It’s a really bohemian-lifestyle show.”

The six one-hour episodes will shoot in August in Los Angeles and Toronto, and the producers are currently shopping the series in the U.S

    1. I was thinking the same thing, it pretty much IS Melrose Place, a spin off of a popular TV show (only I guess Degrassi is WAY farther along) and they all live in an apartment building in a popular place, hmm

  14. I’d prefer a series that actually takes place in Canada. Most of the few shows that do take place in Canada air only on Canadian TV, with the exception of Degrassi and Flashpoint. We Canadians are sick of having our country disguised as the US when shows are shot here. It’s time to show that Canadian cities are fun and sexy, as well! Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, come on…

    1. As an American, I think plenty of shows already take place in either California or New York.
I think there should be more shows taking place in different places in Canada.

  19. Love the idea of a new drama from Epitome featuring slightly older characters however Epitome has done a great job at representing Canadian characters, cities, dialogue, etc. and it just seems a shame to not have the series set in Canada. Toronto is just as capable of producing world class, fame seeking performers. LA isn’t the only ‘Star Mecca’. Makes it sound like the only way to reach stardom is to head to LA, and that is SOOOO untrue.

  20. Okay I don`t think they should focus on old degrassi characters. Their storylines have ended. Now to have some of the old actors and actresses play new roles would be great to see how different they could be from their degrassi characterrs. Although if marco were in it he has to be gay again!!!!! Haha :)
