We’re headed into the final episodes of Degrassi 13C.  For the most part I think this block has been great, and it exceeds the quality of season 13 as a whole (brought down of course by the very rough start in 13A).

With that in mind, as of right now I have no reason to believe Sparks Will Fly will suddenly suck, because I haven’t allowed myself to get sucked into the good old “Degrassi’s always focusing on relationship drama” crutch complaint.  That complaint is more valid toward the Miles/Maya/Zig triangle, but things are far more deeper when it comes to Eli/Clare/Drew.

It’s funny, because when relationship drama happens on this show fans suddenly lose their minds.  Whether it’s shippers or anti-shippers or complaints about relationship drama in general, fan response constantly reinforces the power that relationship drama on Degrassi has over its viewers.  It doesn’t matter which side of any ship you’re on, fan response is always intense. Relationships are above and beyond the most talked about aspect of this TV show; for that reason alone Degrassi has no motivation to “tone it down.”

Amidst all of the arguing/anger/fangirling guaranteed to happen tonight, there is indeed a third plot happening:  Degrassi is following up on Zoë’s mental state for the first time since her sexual assault in Unbelievable.

I know some were annoyed that Degrassi didn’t immediately follow up on her in the episode after Unbelievable, but I was in the camp that was completely fine with it.  If you remember how Degrassi handled Paige’s rape story in season 2, there wasn’t an immediate followup episode after Shout.  The followup didn’t come until 12 episodes later, in How Soon Is Now**.  After that, they waited until all the way in season 4 to bring it up again (**NOTE: Back in 2003, The-N made the executive decision to air How Soon Is Now as a followup ep on the same night that they aired Shout, because HSIN could be aired out of order without screwing with the season’s timeline).

It felt like Paige took forever to cope with being raped because they spread the storyline out over a very long period of time, back during a time when most plots were wrapped up rather quickly.  I’m hoping this is the route that Degrassi is going with Zoë, because it’d be a shame for them to kind of drop it after this episode.

Because Sparks Will Fly is being treated as an hour-long episode, I will not be posting a review for tonight’s episode.  I’m just going to wait until next week and write a combined review for both parts.

Check out promo pics from tonight’s episode below:

  3. Before and after watching this episode…I still feel like we’re looking at one girl who knows exactly what she wants and just can’t own up to it…and one who hasn’t got a clue what she wants, yet continues to claim she does. And that the latter of the two is going to end up very, very alone. I’ll leave everyone else to figure out which is which – though it should be pretty obvious.

but on the other hand u can also say maya knows what she wants (zig) but cant own up to it. and that clare hasnt got a clue to what she wants, but claims she does (dating eli)

      1. To me, Clare seems to have a firmer grasp in what she wants. Her problem is that Eli is standing in her way…and even more than that, she’s standing in her own way, unable to fully admit she wants Drew. She took a step in the right direction last night, breaking up with Eli, even if it was over the phone. I mean – why stay with someone when you’re miserable?

Maya…Maya’s been so lost since Cam died and Tori moved that I don’t think she knows which end is up. I just feel like, she was this amazing person at the beginning (remember the “chicken cutlet” incident?) who felt fresh and unique and sure of herself…and in one fell swoop, thanks to Cam’s suicide and Tori moving – she’s floundering. And she has been for a while.

As much as I want her and Zig together, after last night’s episode – I really, really think she needs time to herself and some therapy. Cause really – outside of these two boys, she’s got no one she can count on. And I think that’s a large part of her problem. Sure – there’s Tristan and Zoe, but neither of them are particularly solid friend material. I feel bad for her – she needs a BFF badly, not a boyfriend.

Girl A: Clare. She wants Drew, she knows she wants him, but can’t seem to break it off with Eli.
Girl B: Maya. Torn between Miles and Zig, leading both of them on, and it’s all going to come back and bite her in the ass…

At least that’s my interpretation…I think it could go either way.

  4. Boy this was a very emotional EP.. it was hard to stomach. Maya needs to own up if not she will lose Miles as a boyfriend and Zig as a friend. I hope she let them both go to figure out what she really wants…. As for Clare I understand where she is and its hard. She keeps going back to the same problem at least this time she finally spilled her true feelings to Eli. I know it was crappy to do it by phone but its the only way she can get a hold of him. Eli has not been the same after Ray of Light and the cheating.. Shes a mess. As for Zoe, this one really haunting to bring past vial memories for a roll. This can ruin her emotionally.. Zoe should stick with school and therapy. To give acting a rest for awhile.

    1. It’s been frustrating watching fans jump all over Clare’s case for breaking up with Eli through voicemail…if the way she broke up with him is the only thing you can see in this situation then your vision is shortsighted. Clare’s in a really crappy position, and her options are limited. What else is she supposed to do when her boyfriend is apparently too busy to take two seconds to send a text message or something saying he’s been busy, but will talk to her when he has time? It’s not like this has been a sudden thing, this lack of communication has been going on for MONTHS…I’m surprised Clare didn’t snap before now.

After last night Maya needs to ditch both guys and be single even more than Clare does. Zig has his own issues on top of the fact Maya doesn’t really seem romantically interested in him. I know Maya cares for him, but it’s also unfair for her to lead Zig on…as a guy it hurts either way, and I’d much rather just be rejected outright than to be lead on. Miles is vindictive and can’t let things go, and needs to learn to control his emotions. In next week’s episode both guys will be acting like full-blown jackasses. Hopefully Maya will end up witnessing first hand how Zig and Miles are treating each other and reject them both.

I don’t know if Zoë should necessarily give up acting…it seems to be her passion. This role is definitely one that’s a little too much for her, but at least she’s realized that her sexual assault is still a really sore spot for her and maybe she’ll get help.

      1. Oh I agree with you on all counts.. I just didn’t want to make a big story about it. Clare is in a crappy place I’ve there and its hard but she had every right to snap. Eli is just not there anymore and I knew this was coming. We still don’t know what’s going on in NY, is he having the same issues too. Is he liking Lenore more than thought? We don’t know. I hope we goet more next week. I don’t blame Clare for breaking up with Eli. How much can hurt can she take form him. Its should have been finished after he cheated……. I can’t say much for Zoe until we see part 2. ……. Maya, needs to let both guys go.

  5. I have this really itchy feeling Eli is dating both Clare and Lenore. This something that no one would ever expect.
