Episode Description for Mr. Brightside Pt. 1: Drew’s ultimate fighting training is the only thing keeping him together — and it’s barely doing that. If he loses that… what else will he lose?
Not gonna lie, I’m pretty stoked about this because Drew’s plot has been consistently good all season. Hopefully the interaction with Katie doesn’t hinder things.

Other Degrassi News…..
If you haven’t heard, Alex Steele is returning to Degrassi. However, Degrassi is NOT casting her in her former role as Angela Jeremiah. She’s going to be playing a girl named Tori. Entertainment Weekly has the details: http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/08/15/degrassi-alumni-returns/
*************
http://www.lfpress.com/entertainment/2011/08/12/18546966.html
This article identifies another niner for the second half of Season 11…actress Olivia Scriven will play Maya Matlin, Katie’s younger sister.
Also, the Degrassi cast left for Haiti today to help build a school or two down there. To be honest I’m not sure exactly how much money they raised through their donation site, there was so much initial bullcrap going on with fans making up and inflation donations so that their favorite cast memeber would “win” that I stopped paying attention.
Epitome is currently filming Highland Gardens, so Degrassi isn’t scheduled to resume filming until October.–

I don’t know but I have a feeling after Clare and Alli graduate I might not watch Degrassi anymore. We’ve been with Clare and Alli for around 3 seasons and we seen them grown. It might not be the same once they graduate.

I agree whole heartedly. I grew up with the season 8 niners. Stephen Stohn said he’s trying to have it where there’s a graduation every other season. That means Eli’s class graduates season 13 and Clare’s will season 15. That’ll be it for me.

Let me preface my reply by saying that I mean NO disrespect, but I find comments like this pretty silly. If the quality of the writing on the show is still good by the time Clare and co. graduate, if the newer characters are still interesting, then why would you just stop watching the show?
New characters aren’t just introduced in a vacuum (unlike a series like Skins, where the cast changes COMPLETELY every *2* seasons, yet fans still remain loyal because the writing is terrific): they’re woven into existing characters’ stories so that they are able to grow on viewers who have been watching the show for years, so that after older characters leave, the newer ones, for whom viewers have been able to acquire a taste, are still around.
Hey, I grew up with Emma and Paige’s classes: I began grade 9 when season 1 premiered, so I was just a touch older than they were, but I still felt a kinship with them. But in spite of those characters moving on, newer characters like Darcy, Jane, Clare, Fiona, Eli, Adam etc. have kept me hooked because they’re fun to watch, even if they’re of a different generation. I may be in my mid-20s now, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t appreciate strong young actors in good roles.

I think they just needed a random girl for Drew to use as Bianca’s place holder. I also think they wanted Drew to have a random new love interest for this episode because she’ll help him stop fighting.
I’m worried by including Katie in Drew’s storyline that it’ll get off track. I think that Drew’s involvment in Don’t Panic is going to be misplaced. The only reason he is even used in that plot is because Katie’s involved in this episodes plot.
I don’t want to judge Krew (Katie/Drew) right off the bat, but their interaction seems a bit out there. Plus, we all know that Drew ends up with Bianca in the end. They make a much more balanced pairing.
LikeLike
I doubt the Katie/Drew fling will last more than a few episodes. Because everyone knows that A. Drew can’t stay with one girl for very long without screwing up and B. He still has feelings for Bianca. Not to mention, the writers don’t seem to have any idea what to do with Katie aside from having her be the antagonist or foil in another character’s plot. Katie needs to have an actual purpose on the show, otherwise she’s as useful as Chantay or a lead balloon.

I admit, I’m pretty disappointed that they weren’t able to bring back the character of Angela, but I’m gonna try to not let that affect my views of Tori. Considering her character description, I hope they can manage to make her character at least a little endearing right off the bat. Maybe they’ll have learned their lesson from Holly J!

New episodes won’t premiere until “early 2012”, according to the article that announced Maya (Katie’s little sister). No link, but it said you will see her in episodes beginning 2012 which I assume means early February 2012, like when In Too Deep, because with the extra episodes in Now or Never as opposed to The Boiling Point, they don’t have enough episodes to do another fall session.

I don’t think it’s a huge deal that Alex Steele is coming back as Tori, not Angie. The ppl on the Degrassi wiki are acting like this is the end of world. This happens in TV shows all the time. Not to mention, most of the Degrassi viewers probably won’t even remember that Alex was on the show for the first 5 seasons. Casting her as Angie would mean recasting Joey and possibly any other family members. Or doing the dreading “I live with my aunt or cousin or stepmother’ story line if her original family couldn’t be cast. The last time we saw her she was like 10, so all of the Angie comparisons that might come with her new role should stop. She played a little girl who was a side character to another side/main character. Now that she’s 15, it’s high time she grew up and played a different role. It’s a little bit disappointing the the 2nd half of season 11 won’t be back until next year, but oh well.

I don’t see why people are so surprised that Degrassi won’t return until 2012. Did the fact that they only filmed 4 out of 16 episodes before going on hiatus until October not clue you in? On to Alex Steele… Wow. On the one hand, we can’t really complain; she’s coming back regardless. On the other: They casted her as Tori because she was the best actress for the role, but do they not realize they could have easily made that an Angie storyline? Her mother died when she was a baby… We already saw in Season 3 that Angie was rather spoiled. I could picture her growing up and getting everything she wants due to the fact that Diane aside, she lacks that true mother figure in her life; Angela embodies Julia. Therefore, Joey is incapable of saying no to her; it’d make perfect sense! While I do insist I will never stop watching the show, now we don’t even have Angela Jeremiah to anticipate! All dedication aside, a show with Jess Sadie Maya and Tori will be very hard to hold onto :/

O_O Maya looks wayyy too similar to a close female friend of mine… Anyway, something that should be pointed out: all new regulars this season were initially brought onto the show to progress the storyline of other characters- Jake: Clare&Eli Marisol: KC&Jenna Imogen: Clare&Eli Katie: Adam&Drew however, the new niners introduced so far have apparent inner struggles: Tori is the talented ballet dancer who always gets what she wants, while Maya is stuck in the shadow of Katie because her parents want them to follow the same dreams. She initially comes off as a nerdy Freshman, but they’re already setting her up as a queen bee… Kinda sad really, the fact that Maya already has more of a plot arranged than Katie herself.

I think it should be interesting to have freshman back on the show, it’s been awhile and it’ll be a nice change. Then we will have all grades being represented on the show. If you count Sadie, who will soon be a sophomore. Also, it’s peculiar that Katie was JUST added as a character and only 30 episodes later there introducing her sibling. it seems like there’s a lot of siblings now….drew/Adam, alli/sav, holly j/heather, Clare/Darcy, and Fiona/declan. ( though not all of them are currently on the show. But now we have Katie and Maya. Should be interesting, I always love the freshman characters!!!!!

Degrassi is no longer TNG. That was completed officially once Emma and Spinner married that tie to the Jr and high school Degrassi ended. It doesn’t bother me anymore that there aren’t anymore “original” characters on the show anymore minus Simpson. Personally, as TNG worn on, I got really tired of the characters.

The thing is, they keep tying new people to existing characters. Clare came after Darcy and now Maya is coming after Katie, so clearly they are going to be the next generation assuming the series lasts another 4 years.
I think it should be integral to the Degrassi-verse to keep characters connected to one another and adding in someone tied to the original series would have been just that. It’s not like they had to make a whole big deal about it, but we’ve already seen Angela. It would make more sense to utilize existing characters to further new storylines.

The Drew storyline *should* be good, but I don’t think Luke is a strong enough actor to take on such heavy material. I think it has potential, but I need Luke to step up his game.

Interesting episode.
Drew/Katie: Drew’s intense obsession with fighting is a tad over dramatic if you ask me. I understand the motivation and reason for him to become a part of Mixed Martial Arts, but his desire is a little too in your face. However; this doesn’t harm the story much. I liked seeing Mo being gradually introduced in other areas of Degrassi other than just his love for music. Katie’s interest in Drew makes much more sense than I had expected. Her involvement with the paper allows her to have so many interactions with other characters. I like their interaction as reporter to subject who feels betrayed, but anything more seems too rushed and random.
Alli/Dave: Alli has once again fallen off her pedestal of awesomeness. She should have let Dave been himself during his meeting with her parents and not began lying to them again. I feel bad for Dave in this situation, because he should have at least been given the chance to introduce himself rather than introduce David the Cricket enthusiast.
Holly J.: I’m glad the writers didn’t push aside the fact that Fiona could easily pay for the kidney. I’m also glad that the transferring of the money is how it is realized that paying for a vital organ is very illegal. It was handled very smoothly and in an uncomplicated way. I also applaud Holly J. for calling Dawn out on being so selfish. It’s terrible of Dawn to allow Holly J. to die when she is the only hope Holly J. has. I do think that in tomorrow’s episode Dawn will realize this and help her, but nonetheless it’s horrible she even considered not helping.

Holly J was pretty harsh with Dawn…but she deserved it, I feel. She kept HJ for almost a year then gave her up, said it was “difficult” or something, and now when her daughter needs her most (to save her life), she’s backing out. Does she just not care at all? It made me sick. But the episode descriptions say that HJ is going in for a transplant, so either Dawn gave in or there’s some other miracle…
LikeLike
I agree. It’s pretty terrible for Dawn to extort money from Holly J just because she thinks she has a good life having been accepted into Yale and what not. I completely agree with Holly J’s reaction. It wasn’t right for Dawn to ask for money in the first place, then when the possiblity of donating came up, she acted like it was some huge burden! Just because she didn’t raise Holly J, it doesn’t make her value as a daughter any more less than her other kids. If her other kid needed an operation, she’d be there in a heartbeat, no questions asked. Holly J should cut off contact with her, to be honest. What a selfish old witch! I’m glad that the writers didn’t let Fiona’s plan to pay for the kidney an option. It would have been too easy.

I completely agree and was thinking the same thing! I mean, Jess was a niner for one episode and is now mysteriously a sophomore. Also, Sadie is a niner but neither her or Jess are main characters. So when I saw the picture it was a little weird.
Also, I’m completely annoyed at how they are bringing Alex back but giving her a new character? What’s the point of having her back then? They seriously couldn’t find any other actress to fill that role? & why would she try out for a new character on a show that she was already on anyway? That is like Manny coming back in 5 seasons as a teacher but not playing Manny..? Also are they going to add any new guys? They seem to be adding a lot of new girls.

So…? If they wanted to bring Emma back but Snake wasn’t on the show should they give her a completely different character? Let me ask you a question. How many times have we seen Bianca, Zane, Imogen, Wesley, Connor, Katie, Chantay and Owen’s parents? (etc.) I mean I love the addition of parents, it makes it much more necessary. But characters get by without them. Also, Just mentions of her father Joey from Mr. Simpson since he would know her from being friends with her father and knowing her as a kid or of her talking about her older brother Craig would have been fine, even awesome. & quitting from a regular position doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be able to quest star if they realllllly needed him. I’m sure he would have been able to do an episode.

The reason why its not such a big deal to bring back Alex as it would if they brought back Cassie or Miriam or any other MAIN character as a new character is because
1. Alex was never a main character with a main plot line. She was like a glorified extra.
2. Alex was very young and underdeveloped physically. Her facial structure has changed a lot.
After you know its her, yea you can realize like “hey that was the little girl who played angela!” but if I was never told that was Alex Steele……I would have never noticed.
Plus, there’s no way they could have written Angela in w/o making her backing story even more ridiculous. A mom who died, a carsales man dad who’s brought 2 different girls heavily into her life at a young age, with a semi famous step brother who’s had drug issues….then how do you just randomly take Joey out of the picture since the actor has 100% quit degrassi? add abandonment to joeys profile? make her ridiculously smart for the degrassi gifted program and live with Simpson too cuz joey moved? Make her live with a relative for NO logical reason? …it just wouldn’t be right to try to warp her storyline to fit.
Joey was too much of an involved parent to just randomly bring Angela back and him be M.I.A. …unless they could convince the audience he got some big corporate job and is always on the run, drawing in money and just showers Angela with $$ and gifts to compensate, i don’t think it’d work. Plus its a little too much like a cross of Craigs dad and Fiona’s lifestyle

Although I agree with everyone that Dawn is being a bitch and it’s not fair for Holly J, I am glad that her mom is being reluctant to giving her a kidney. I mean besides the fact that they just met, she doesn’t know this girl (even though she’s her daughter) and having surgery and donating an organ is a huge and serious thing, it makes the storyline more interesting this way. It would kill the storlyine if on the first day they met and Dawn was all like “yes! it is the least i can do for you”. It would be too easy that way and one of the most interesting and refreshing storlyines in a while, a serious illness instead of more relationship drama would be over fast..

HJ I am a little upset with. She had no right to push Dawn. Dawn does not have the means to take time off of work she is a single mom. The 20,000 would be the wages she would have lost if she was recovering for three months. Sorry she is not selfish. Thank god HJ realized this.
Alli should have been upfront with Dave about her family customs about dating. And then slowly have Dave meet them. But no she has him lie about himself. I am sure Mr Bandari would have actually like Dave. Alli will never learn

I think degrassi should go back starting with like grade 7. That’s how it started anyway. Then we wouldn’t have all these conflicting feelings about characters graduating so fast. Even though in reality they were on for a long time, compared to people like Paige, Spinner, Manny, and so on this show’s cast and is going to change at a way faster rate.
Thats just my opinion.

I would have loved to see all of them in 7th grade. But we wouldnt have because didn’t she go to lakehurst? (although im not sure since heather went to degrassi but we were first introduced to her when lakehurst burnt down)
But anyway, I just feel like us viewers became more attached to the characters when we saw them from grade 7/8 to graduation. Like I know I felt much more connected with the old Degrassi characters than even with my favorite new ones. Also because of all the years they had in the school, all their plots were not as rushed and there was enough room for loveable, fun, easy plots. (ex: Toby and JT trying to share a locker. It was just silly fun)

That would be entertaining, the only thing is that now Degrassi is only a highschool. About the whole Holly J and Dawn situation, I’m completely split.. I feel so bad for Holly J because in her position, she sees it as her mom completely doesn’t give a fuck about her and pretty much wants her to die, but Holly J also has to realize that if she never acted stupid before and neglected her ongoing mysterious sickness then she wouldn’t require a kidney transplant right now.
Then again, from Dawn’s point of view.. I honestly don’t know why she had a 3rd child.. I understand she probably thought she was ready for children, and I will assume the fathers of all of her children (including Holly J) are all different, but after being left twice, I thought she would receive a wake-up call. I kind of agree with Holly J – Dawn isn’t in a position to handle children, let alone 3, even if one of them is being cared for by another family and is all grown up and ready to graduate high school, but no one can see in the future.. Dawn probably didn’t see herself in this situation..
I like the direction that they were taking with the Holly J plot. The one thing I did not want to happen was Fiona paying Dawn, and I’m so glad she won’t be able to. I want to see the direction this plot will continue with Holly J struggling financially to buy her kidney and have a good relationship with her bio-mom at the same time.
Honestly, even if it’s just Part 1, I think this plot is DEFINITELY excelling, just as it did in U Don’t Know in my opinion. One other question: Does anyone really understand about what time it is in the school year? Holly J and Fiona were talking about prom dresses, so I assumed it’s close to graduation. I would say it’s probably late May or June is just starting? Because Spring Break started during the beginning of May at the very least, and I’m assuming they end school in mid-late June, like around the 15th-25th..

Not just you. I feel the same way. SS tweeted last night that it would have been difficult to bring Angela back into the storyline.
What storyline? They are crafting a new one for Tori. It’s not like they are building up to some grand introduction where all the students at Degrassi are awaiting her arrival. If they wanted *A* Tori, that’s fine. She’s a new character, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t have also brought back Angela too. I guess my biggest disappointment is that the chances of seeing any of the old school cast gets less and less each passing year.

It’d be too difficult to have Angela come back, because they already said at one point that Joey had moved away and the actor who played Joey said he’d never work on Degrassi again. And generally a student needs a parent to go to school.

I understand that everyone thinks Dawn in super selfish, but think about things from her perspective. She is a single parent (which I don’t think people should hate on, tons of single parents support and raise great families) who would need to take 3 months of off work to do this and recover. In those three months, she still needs to feed her kids, and keep a roof over their head. I think $20,000 may be a little much, but she does need money to survive.
Aside from that, she offered her kidney to someone she just met. Loosing a kidney might reduce her quality of life, particularly when she is older, or is something happens to her other kidney. If she were truly selfish, she wouldn’t have offered her kidney at all.

Drew’s plot is seriously one of the best continuing story lines of S11, and it’s definitely one of my faves as well. I am just so impressed and fascinated by it; it hasn’t bored me yet. I don’t even oppose the idea of Krew because of how Katie’s being integrated into Drew’s plot. I think it’s because I like that the build up to their eventual hook up isn’t overshadowing Drew’s plot.
One thing that won’t stop bothering me is that Drew continues to befriend and/or date people that have screwed over his brother in some shape or manner. I know this is Degrassi, but this has happened too much for me to ignore or be okay with. For God’s sake, they made such a big deal of Emma dating Peter behind Manny’s back, and now we’re just supposed to accept this huge continuity fail?
It’s nice that they addressed the legality of Holly J’s dilemma. It was even nicer to see the strength of the Folly J friendship. I’m really going to miss seeing them together when Holly J graduates. I can’t say that I completely hate Holly J’s birth mom because I can see where she’s coming from… but at the end of the day, if Holly J were to die, how could she live with herself knowing she was the only one that could’ve saved her life?
“At your age, it is much better to make great friends.” <– True story, Mr. Bhandari. If only everyone else at Degrassi understood that… but that'd be too easy. I do enjoy Bhandurner/Dalli though; they're probably the only existing couple I like right now. I can't really be mad at Alli for what's she doing because I guess I can understand not wanting to rock the boat when things have been going so well. But I just wish it wasn't at Dave's expense.
I'm sure I'll end up loving Alex Steele's new character, but I'm really, REALLY disappointed with the Degrassi team this time around. Here they have a chance to make the most bad ass continuity in television history, and they completely blew it. They have honestly disappointed everyone. The return of Angela Jeremiah could've been key to people continuing to watch Degrassi after Clare's class graduates.
