Degrassi: The Next Generation’s Underrated Episodes, Birthday Edition

Today is my birthday. I might be turning the ripe, young age of 33, but in Degrassiland I’m only a few fist shakes on my front porch away from being shipped off to that nursing home in the Degrassi Bermuda Triangle.

I’ve mentioned a few times over the years that I feel like the TNG Season 2 episode Mirror In The Bathroom is one of the most underrated episodes in the history of Degrassi. Well in the spirit of birthday-ness, my gift to you is a list more TNG episodes (seasons 1-9) I feel are quite underrated.

Season 1: Parent’s Day

Adults don’t play as big of a role on Degrassi as they used to. However, this was the first episode to feature just how much of an impact parents’ behavior can have on their children.

Season 2: Drive

Let’s just be honest here…this episode is kinda boring, but that’s why I love it. It’s the kind of realistic boredom you’d expect where a group of teenage boys who have nothing to do wind up getting in trouble. Craig taking the car for a joyride also parallels the Degrassi Junior High episode Trust Me, in which Joey does the same thing as a teen.

Season 3: Rock And Roll High School

This is my favorite episode of all time. There was a point where I could recite every single line from this episode by heart. Now I’m too old to barely remember what happened in the episode I watched last night.

Season 4: Queen Of Hearts – I love the social group that forms in this episode, but it’s also a great plot in which Ellie has major trust issues stemming from the toxic relationship with her mother.

Season 5: Weddings, Parties, Anything – Similar to my love of Rock And Roll High School, this is a fun filler episode.

Season 6: Working For The Weekend – Next Class Season 2 features multiple characters being jealous of their closest friends, and this episode is a reminder of the show having dealt with it through Spinner and Jimmy’s friendship multiple times over the years.

Season 7 – Another Brick In The Wall – Season 7 is one of those where people either loved it or hated it, but everything that was a product of Darcy’s rape storyline was gold. Plus we got to watch Stefan Brogren in his natural habitat, getting drunk and eating hotdogs!

Season 8 – Heart Of Glass – This was a gem of an episode in what was a disappointing season for many reasons.

Season 9 – Innocent When You Dream

God, this episode’s ridiculousness is what makes it so great. Innocent When You Dream never fails to make me laugh. Where else are you going to get a fanfic-writing, Twilight-loving fangirl running around biting and kissing guys on the neck?
