Zaya Gets Caught

1418-1Maya and Zig are caught kissing in the kitchen by Maya’s mom at three in the morning.  With “no hanky panky” as one of the conditions for Zig being able to stay there, Mrs. Matlin tells Maya that can never happen again.  Maya and Zig confess their love for each other, but the problem is they’re going to have to hide their relationship from Mrs. Matlin.  Zig doesn’t want to do that because he’s grateful for everything Mrs. Matlin has done for him, and he wants to be honest with her in return.

Maya tells her mom she and Zig are in love and now dating and Mrs. Matlin is okay with it.  However, Zig still must move out because she doesn’t want Zaya shacking up under her roof.  Maya doesn’t want Zig to move out, but he tells her he’ll be alright despite not knowing where he’ll go.

QUICK GRADE: C+
QUICK REVIEW:  When it comes to Zaya, they are whatever you want them to be based on how you decide to interpret their history.  While Maya’s concerned about where Zig will live, there’s a vibe that she’s now become emotionally dependent on him.  Heck, even he agrees it’s time he moves out.  Zig continues to impress with his growth and maturity, deciding to take the honest route when it comes to whether or not they should hide their relationship from Maya’s mom.  I’m neither here nor there on Zaya, so for me all of this (for the moment) is just standard protocol; the show is pushing the story in the direction it needs to go in order to get to the meat of 14B’s bread and butter, aka the gang plot.

Eclare Deals With Devastating News

1418-2After learning the baby no longer has a heartbeat, Clare learns she still has to deliver the baby because she’s so far along in the pregnancy.  Trying to avoid dealing with the loss, Clare plans a spontaneous trip to New York to talk the admissions officer at Columbia into reaccepting her.  Eli comes along and doesn’t think it’s a good idea, and he tries to get her to go back  home.  However, when Clare freaks because her world has come crashing down, Eli agrees to drive her.

On the way, the two break down and mourn the loss of their son, believing life with him would be beautiful and amazing.  Clare changes her mind about going to New York and the two go home.  Clare chooses not to commemorate their son’s life (an option provided by the doctor), choosing to just hold onto the memories in her mind and heart.  Clare and Eli then depart for Clare’s procedure to induce labor.

QUICK GRADE: A+
QUICK REVIEW: Genuine.  Heartfelt.  Heartbreaking.  Fantastic performances from Aislinn and Munro.  This is the best Eclare-related plot to have ever happened on Degrassi.  Eli is a wonderful, supportive boyfriend in this episode.  Clare’s heartache resonates as she struggles to understand why this happened.  Clare and Eli wondering “Why?” and “What if?” as they both broke down in tears was incredible.  “I just can’t believe we’re never gonna get to know him,” Clare says, a statement that hits way too close to home for anyone who’s gone through this.

Huntlene

1418-3Hunter likes Arlene, but the two friends are pretty mean to each other.  As set designers for the musical, they end up putting down each other’s ideas.  Imogen tells Hunter that if he wants to date Arlene, he needs to be nicer to her and woo her with romantic gestures.  Hunter has flowers sent to Arlene in class along with a “secret admirer” card, but Arlene thinks the gesture is cliché and dumb.  She still wants to meet the secret admirer to see how creepy his is, and asks Hunter to come with her.

When the secret admirer doesn’t show, Hunter agrees with Arlene that it must’ve been a prank.  Saying that upsets Arlene, because she thinks Hunter’s agreeing with the idea that no one could ever like her.  The two end up reconciling, and while Arlene appreciates Hunter being their for her she now views him as her best friend.

QUICK GRADE: B
QUICK REVIEW: Things between Hunter and Arlene were awkward, confusing and exactly what you’d expect from these two young kids.  They have the type of friendship that you see a lot of in real life, friends constantly taking sarcastic jabs at each other.  At the same time, both Hunter and Arlene also have trouble expressing their emotions.  Hunter tries to step out of his comfort zone and do the flowers thing, but it fails miserably.  He gets a lesson in how confusing girls can be; Arlene thinks the “secret admirer” thing is stupid, but at the same time she wants to meet the person and looks disappointed when they don’t show up.
We’ve seen before that Arlene is viewed as the nerdy girl at school and others pick on her, so even if she wasn’t interested in the admirer she still might long to be admired by someone.  It might not be the outcome Hunter wanted, but these two loners may have found something new and even better in becoming best friends.

  1. Eclare plot was very well done but it should have been an A plot. And i do agree with some fans that Drew should have been involved some how even though hes not the father he was there for Clare longer than Eli has. Thats why I have a problem with Clare hard core stories. Fans make it about Elcare Not Clare. Eli has no idea how shes really feeling. He emotions may change after delivering. She may get anxiety, depression, too happy then sad.. I also feel that Something big is going to happen to Clare in the finale that may lead her to another direction that may pit her with Eli. I feel that Clare is going to another university thats across the country or she gets a life time opportunity that she has to do alone.

    1. I’m sorry, but Drew didn’t need to be apart of this. Eclare episodes stopped being about the ship for me when Clare found out she had cancer. This was clearly about Clare and how she was processing her loss. Eli was her support and kudos to both Munro and Aislinn for that tearjerking scene. Even if things don’t work out in the end, I won’t be disappointed. Clare and Eli had their time.

      1. I agree that this is Clare’s POV, its been Clare’s POV through out S13 & S14..

    2. I would agree with you about Clare deserving the A-plot if she didn’t already hog so much screentime this season (and last season and the season before that and the season before that…). This story was well done and the actors did a great job, but I still maintain that another character should have gotten this plot instead. I just can’t with Clare or EClare anymore. I can’t wait to see them go and hopefully in the future the writers will stop giving their favorite characters a ton of screentime at the expense of other characters who need developing.

This isn’t even the end of Clare. She’ll be getting more plots this season. They can’t even let Connor have valedictorian without making it about her.

      1. Tell us how you really feel Socky. DREW has had just as many plots, but that’s okay because he’s not Clare. They’re shoving the tenners down our throats, (despite the fact they’re sticking around for another 68866 years.) but that’s okay because they’re not Clare. Get used to seeing Maya and Zoe for the next 77966 years because the writers are making them out to be the next Clare & Alli. And I’m willing by the time next year you”ll still be whining about Clare getting so many storylines.

Face the facts. This storyline had to be done because they weren’t going to send “their” favorite character off pregnant. If anything they should’ve dropped the Zaya storyline and gave Connor one.

      2. LOL, I hate Drew too and I have complained about him hogging screentime plenty of times. My main problem with Clare is her Mary Sueishness. At least Drew isn’t considered practically perfect in every way like she is. I had the same problem with Emma and Mia. They were Mary Sues too and I complained a TON about them when they were still around. Now that Clare is leaving, Maya will probably be the next annoying overexposed Mary Sue (although the writers haven’t completely ruined her yet, so there might be hope).

      3. Well do you honest think Zle will graduate? Not unless she goes back in time. She still has to face juvie for her “stuff”. It is the inevitable. Zig will have to live with the pain of seeing her go. Cus

She just let him go without telling him. He knows what she did but I just want to see the kiss so we can see her in court. Enough of Zia crap! I like it but watching them is like watching a diabetic eat

A whole cake… Just a joke. If we’re rebooting a series we don’t need her. I hope her role is small next year. I pictured her in a jumpsuit & I liked it. But I don’t wanna go 6 months wondering what

Could of happened. An if sim comes back he gone be pissed. & FYI Arlene is the true blackmailer. If you haven’t figured it out you will!

  2. Honestly I think Zig and Maya do love each other. I don’t think that Maya is emotionally dependent on him at all. I think Zig and Maya like each other/in love and that it seems weird that their finally together but at the same time, the writters have been building this up. They keep bringing up Zaya and their potential relationship, every season since there introduction. Every season so far since they’ve been introduced – there has been some thing that has brought them closer together. But that’s just my opinion and I respect your opinion.

    1. Exactly. I’m indifferent to all Maya ships and I’m sick of the good girl/bad boy cliche, but they’ve been setting this up since before Cam even showed up. This is probably a really controversial opinion, but I think that Maya = Caitlin, Zig = Joey, and Cam = Claude (only not as irritating).

  5. Seriously, kudos to Aislinn and Munro for their performances last night. That last scene in the car had me tearing up. I know people have been experiencing a little Clare fatigue, but I’m going to miss her when she leaves. For all her flaws, she’s always been one of my favorite characters on this show.

  6. I agree on the grades but for me this episode is so much more when you look at it as a whole. Degrassi took young love that was just beginning, love we’ve seen coming, and love that is on its way out the door(as far as the show is concerned) and crafted this beautiful narrative about the trials each can face. Arlene being insecure, Zig moving out, and Claire’s Miscarage say so much more as one collective narrative on the trials of love. Idk this is just the vibe I got from it

  8. One thing I appreciate with the Maya plots is that her two reactions that are an aspect of her emotional trauma stay fairly uniform whenever they come up:

    1. Maya’s mind comes up with the worst possible end result of any situation.
    2. And it is all her fault.

She needs to single handedly save everyone in her world because they will end up like Cam, and it will all be her fault. And that terrifies her to no end, especially when things are out of her hands (Maya stalking Miles in 14A, and repeated here with the concept of Zig moving out). Heck, the idea of Zig moving out leads Maya to believe she’ll lose him forever if he isn’t around her for any period of time.

Little surprising she didn’t blame Tiny getting stabbed on herself.

  9. The c plot was at least unique in that the guy didn’t confess it was him at the time of the secret meetup, or in the end and then they got together. Now it just depends if later in the season the girl says she actually knew it was him all along. That would be disappointing because that seems like what will happen, or the guy will just finally confess his love and then they’ll get together.
