Degrassi is officially preparing to reboot itself again as it’s been announced the show is moving to Netflix in early 2016.

According to a press release, “The deal will see Netflix become the worldwide home for Degrassi: Next Class, excluding Canada, Australia and France, where the series will appear on Netflix at later dates.

The series’ name has changed, but just like the reboot in season 10 it’s still the same show refreshed for another go-round; it will still feature the non-graduating characters from season 14, plus the new characters you’ve seen the show audition info for.  Season 15 will contain 20 episodes, which is pretty much on par with the episode counts for seasons 5 and 6.

Stephen Stohn also confirmed Degrassi will air on Family Channel in Canada.  As far as the fate of the 2-hour movie that was produced at the end of season 14? No one seems to know yet:

  1. Well played! Got to hand it to Stohn, he’s been 2 steps ahead of everybody else for the past 2 years. The trades mentioned a little bidding war and I guess Netflix came out on top. I’m really anxious to see how they re-tool the production for this medium.

      1. I hope I can afford Netflix. I’ve never leased anything. Would of been easier to just make a YT channel. Seeing her graduate would be good. But I’m still wondering how Zoe would be in S15? It

Doesn’t add up. The 4th ep says that the school knows everything she did & she tries to “get them to her side”. Idk who ” them” is. & isn’t she worried about having more problems. The guilt is setting

In. I’m here to watch 14B for this (& the Frankie stuff). But I hope we see the 2 hour movie. Been waiting for it. & this DN stuff needs to die! It needs a conclusion. Her walking away isn’t it. But from

What I know it seems like their showing how someone is affected after an assault. All I got from her was “instead of guys forcing me for stuff I’ll just give them what they want”. Then to ” I’m in

Too deep I can’t go!” Shit is crazy. We dont need 2 Zoe’s in 1 school. That’s like Wolfman, Dracula & Freddie all in the same movie.

  5. Is netflix going to have all 15 previous seasons? Last I checked, the only way for us cord cutters to get degrassi was on Hulu….and they didn’t have that many episodes.

  6. Family Channel is pretty strict about show content, so I’m curious as to what the show will now be like. It’s been years since I’ve watched the channel, but it’s essentially Canada’s version of the Disney Channel. Back in the day when they aired “Blossom” (about 15 years ago mind you), a lot of episodes were not shown, including the gun episode in season 3, the episodes that featured Six’s drinking problem, the episode where Blossom’s date hits her, among many others.

    1. Your right. Like polar opposites, Netflix, where anything goes and the Family Channel, who’ll need to loosen up a bit, even for DeGrassi.

I’m wondering if they will release the whole season at once on Netflix, which is pretty much the way they do things. If so, it won’t be worth a whole lot to the Family Channel. All questions that I assume we’ll have answers to soon, hope so anyway.

      2. Well, they did show Blossom over 15 years ago. In the mid-00s, they aired every episode of Popular without any sort of censorship, so I assume that they must have tweaked their content guidelines. I’ve also heard rumours that Family Channel will stop airing Disney Channel content in 2016, so maybe the network will get a more mature facelift?

      3. Yeah, didn’t DHX decide to let its contract with Disney expire after this year? Also from the way Stephen was talking, it sounds like they’ll be able to be edgier despite Family Channel being so family friendly: https://twitter.com/stephenstohn/status/608237886169878529

      4. Here’s an idea: why is it called family? Ain’t nothing in the show that’s family. We rarely see the parents interact with their kids. & when we do its not positive. I expect big things from S15. Idk

Why they just didn’t make a YT channel. They’d get subscribers faster than Nyan cat. I’m suprised the whole show isn’t TV14 or “viewer discretion is advised”. Some EPs were in 14. & what’s the age group

For this channel? It said 8-14? What’s gone happen if a kid watches this? If the Disney stuff goes then what’s left? Damn I wish this channel was on Comcast. Makes me wanna live in Canada.

& they dont need to hold the 2hour thing from us! We’ve waited long enough! We must see 14B! No BS! We must see the conclusion! Will Zoe be out of school? (She better!), what will become of Maya?

what will Jack & Jonah do? & what happens to the squad. We all know once Miles finds out about the kiss Winston will only have 1 friend. He can’t fight Miles. He’d get his ass kicked:)

  7. This is good news for sure. Hopefully they will put the previous seasons on as well, I haven’t seen most of them since they initially aired so that would be fun to do.

I am kind of disappointed that there will only be 20 episodes. Only because that show has such a large cast they benefited from longer seasons so everyone got at least some chance to shine. But it is better than the 13 seasons most of their originals are, so I can’t complain. And it is definitely better than no episodes.

  9. This is cool news, I gotta say I didn’t see this coming.

People who are expecting the entire season to be put up at once are probably gonna be disappointed, though. I guarantee they’re going to put one episode up weekly like they do with the Canadian series Between (which stars Justin Kelly, Jordan Todosey and Samantha Munro.)

    1. Yeah, I think your right. “Between” is a collaboration with City and Netflix. I hadn’t thought about being able to take advantage of the Canadian tax deals along with a partnership with Netflix. Kinda like the best of both worlds. Speaking of Between, outside of being a DeGrassi Reunion, it’s a pretty good show. I just wish they were giving it more than 6 episodes. We’ll have to watch how they work the second series, as I think they have a hit on their hands with that one…

  13. It’s funny how people are so worried that Degrassi will be toned down due to it going to Family Channel…. Not only did they lose the rights to Disney content which means they’ll probably take the channel in an edgier direction (the channel really needs a name change) but anyone who lives in Canada should know that Family has never been opposed to airing more mature content and has on occasion…. Also, this is Canada our censorship isn’t as bad; when Disney used to skip the alcohol episode of boy meets world, family would show it… family also used to show Popular, My So Called Life, uncensored movies (when they used to have popcorn pix). I haven’t watched the channel in a long time but if they’re no longer showing more mature content in sure it’s by choice and not a restriction on the channel

  14. I’m not sure this is good news…

NETFLIX is where content can thrive, but I haven’t heard good things about The Family Channel. They should have just persueed Netflix. That way, they would have been forced to step up the writing quality. That’s what the show needs most to thrive. That’s why it was canceled. So, hopefully, this works out.

  16. Well 20 EPs? Sure.. I’m down with it. But with all the undergraduate people staying it seems fishy that Zoe is still there. I have a feeling that in the 4th ep she might give up in the end. I know I keep talking about her but she has to GTFO!

Doesn’t seem odd & totally wrong that she caused the 2nd biggest scandal in the show? Or that she will never be friends with the girls? Or that poor Sim lost his job? What’s next? A body count? I see she’s feeling bad. She doesn’t like people

Telling her off & saying what’s true. But to “get them on her side”? She is sick in dA head. IDGAS about Maya or anyone else till this shit is over. Deal with the biggest. The only way she can be in S15 is if she either does get away (hope not)

& risks the guilt coming out like a nuclear bomb or they do something else with her while she’s out. Idk if they want to have anyone visit her in jail. But this needs to be a 1 season thing. I dont want the smell of this in S15. She must PAY!

I feel very sorry for Frankie. After being hurt now this. That’s cruel. I hope she gets better. & what’s happening to the squad? Has anyone seen any Zoe stuff. I need details, anything! & I’ll give ANYONE a cool reward (better than cash)

If they tell me if she gets in trouble! I mean it!

  17. Wow!, at all the times I wish Degrassi was on Netflix, even only if past seasons were available to watch, they finally decide to add the show to the service, but rather as Netflix being the broadcaster instead of just having the show on there to watch recent episodes and/or older seasons. I kind of like this idea more or less. On a good note, having Netflix as Degrassi’s general broadcast medium permits the show to greater opportunities, especially when it comes to the content. However, I’m not to keen on the fact that in the U.S, you will have to subscribe to Netflix and pay a monthly fee in order to watch the show. Especially for those who don’t care much for the service, or for people who don’t make full use out of the service pretty much because there’s not anything on Netflix that interests them, and having to pay a monthly fee just to watch one show. What about for those who are not able to subscribe? Pretty much those in Canada will continue to get the show for free (or maybe simply at a lesser cost considering cable/satellite) as well as getting to watch recent episodes on Netflix when it launches for Netflix in Canada at a later date. I mean I can understand Degrassi being based in Canada and all, but the viewers and fans in the U.S. have also greatly contributed to the high viewer ratings and success of the series throughout the years (not forgetting to mention other countries as well). Furthermore, I kind of think Netflix being the only source to watch the show for U.S. viewers will be a bit of downfall. If they’re gonna have Degrassi, or Degrassi: Next Class, air only on Netflix in the U.S. they should at least put the entire season on the service on premiere date that way at least some viewers won’t have to keep paying a monthly fee just to watch Degrassi. The point is that, there should be another TV channel for the show in the U.S. as well and have Degrassi on Netflix as a secondary source for watching the series. At the same time, what about the promos and trailers? Since Netflix is not a channel, the U.S. may not be getting the necessary promos that were appealing and in my opinion a well executed way at inviting viewers to watch the show. Especially when there were the promos that not only hinted at fun when watching the show but also contained the serious/dramatic aspect which made viewers eager to watching the show. Kind of like the promos and trailers from seasons 10 and 11 mostly. It’s cool the show is continuing, but it would also be great if the U.S. could get a tv channel as well….maybe a network such as ABC Family, NBC, the U.S. version of MTV, TV Land, CBS, or even Fox. U.S. viewers also enjoy the show being on TV. Granted, there are probably free streaming links somewhere on the internet to watch the show even YouTube maybe, but at the same time, the states continuing to get Degrassi from a TV broadcaster as well as Netflix, keeps things readily convenient for everyone; for those who enjoy the show on TV more for whatever reason. I wonder why the U.S. and other countries aren’t getting a TV network as well as Netflix. If the producers are rebooting the show and hopes for a refresh, I don’t see why not.Besides that, Degrassi is becoming Degrassi: Next Class. While that’s a cool name, I think something like “The Second Generation”, or something on a wider scope would have also been cool instead of “next class” which kind of reminds me of the next year or maybe even a slightly different name if they’re gonna do a reboot. However the show has gone through another one or two retcons. Just hope the show improves by far starting with S15 ( the dialogue, and acting).

    1. Emma’s class and the class ahead of them (and POSSIBLY the class one year behind them) were technically the second generation, so calling this reboot “The Second Generation” wouldn’t make sense.

Teenock in the united states is owned by the same company that owns the American mtv channels and cbs and showtime. and that the date it was cancelled was designed to make it after the other ntwork that would air it already having a set schedule for the next 12 months. Netflix allows them to that running the show the sametime as the airing on family channel without have to wait until summer of 2016 to air in the united states.
