FINAL UPDATE: Netflix (worldwide) and Family Channel (Canada) have picked up Degrassi for season 15. Details can be found here: https://degrassiblog.com/2015/06/09/breaking-degrassi-signs-with-netflix-family-channel/

UPDATE #11, 6/6/15 (10:03pm EST): How long do you think it’ll take the media to learn Degrassi’s still preparing for season 15?

UPDATE #10, 6/6/15 (6:35pm): Here’s your first look at Degrassi Season 15’s production crew:

———–

UPDATE #9, 6/5/15 (8:41pm EST): Thanks to @degrassian14_ for pointing out Degrassi season 15’s shooting schedule, as listed on ACTRA Toronto’s site:

CGxTT17WQAAQS71.jpg large

With multiple sources pointing toward season 15’s schedule (which is a little over a week away from beginning), plus the fact DHX Media’s *job* is to distribute shows, your worries about Degrassi being 100% done should’ve started fading away…it’s just a matter of when they’re going to announce the show’s future homes in the U.S. and Canada.

———-

UPDATE #8, 6/5/15 (5:52pm EST): Auditions are officially under way for season 2 of the Nickelodeon series, “Make It Pop.”  If you didn’t already know, this series is co-created by TeenNick Chairman Nick Cannon, but it’s produced at Epitome’s studio in Toronto.  Casting Director Larissa Mair posted on her site that the series’ shooting schedule will be August 24th – November 27th.    Degrassi season 15 is scheduled to film from mid-June until mid-September (or possibly October…read UPDATE #4 below for more).

———–

UPDATE #7, 6/5/15 (3:02pm EST): Bill Harris from the Postmedia Network theorizes that Degrassi could land on the Canadian network, Family Channel.  Epitome’s parent company, DHX Media, owns the network, which could be in need of additional programming according to Kyle from CableTVTalk:

——-

UPDATE #6, 6/5/15 (9:10am EST): Stephen Stohn, who has been oddly silent on twitter for a lot of 2015, posted a quick tweet about the situation:

Good morning. There’s much more to the story. Stay tuned! The universe unfolds in mysterious ways….

———-

UPDATE #5, 6/4/15 (4:48pm EST): DHX Media, owner of Epitome Pictures, released a statement about Degrassi’s future. Several cast members have posted this statement on social media:

———

UPDATE #4, 6/4/15 (4:19pm EST): Earlier today, Degrassi’s Music Supervisor tweeted that Degrassi isn’t canceled (you can read that in UPDATE #1 below).  Now actor Tom Melissis, who plays Mr. Perino posted a status on Facebook about what he knows about Degrassi season 15:

CGrlw82U8AAMMDs.jpg large

———-

UPDATE #3, 6/4/15 (2:31pm EST): Entertainment Weekly says that Degrassi will find a new broadcaster. Quote:

The show is not leaving the air altogether; it will continue to be produced, and later episodes will air on a yet-to-be-named US broadcaster.

Also,

Remember, though: Degrassi is only leaving TeenNick, not our screens. So while we prepare ourselves for the beginning of the end before a new beginning, let us remember the words of Degrassi’s theme song: Whatever it take, we know we can make it through.

——

UPDATE #2, 6/4/15 (2:15pm EST): MTV Canada confirms they will no longer air Degrassi after season 14.  If Dondrea’s tweet about Degrassi (see Update #1 below) holds up, then the guess is new networks will take over, or we could possible see the show still live online.

——-

UPDATE #1, 6/4/15 (1:54pm EST): Epitome’s Music Supervisor posted a tweet saying that Degrassi ISN’T canceled, and that the American articles are misleading. For me that confirms my belief that while TeenNick may no longer air the show, it doesn’t mean the series itself has been canceled (because we’ve heard nothing about the Canadian networks’ plans).

I said I wouldn’t believe it until it was confirmed.  For many years, Degrassi has been renewed on a yearly basis, having to proceed with plans for the upcoming season regardless of whether or not they knew the networks were ordering a new season.

This time, TeenNick didn’t.

Degrassi will end its run on the network after 14 seasons, according to TVLine.

TeenNick on Thursday announced that Degrassi: The Next Generation will close its doors after 14 seasons.

An hour-long special, titled “It Goes There: Degrassi‘s Most Talked-About Moments,” will air Friday, July 31 at 8/7c, followed by the hour-long series finale at 9 pm.

Variety confirms that 14B will premiere on July 20th, with quote, “new episodes each day of the week, ending on July 31 with the final episode.”

As of right now, keep in mind that TeenNick choosing to cancel Degrassi doesn’t necessarily mean the show itself has officially been canceled.  Degrassi is still funded by the Canadian government, and more importantly, nothing yet has been mentioned about whether or not MTV Canada has renewed the show.

  1. This is awful. But honestly, what does TeenNick plan to do without Degrassi? Make a new anchor show? Just show reruns? I don’t know how teennick will succeed without Degrassi.

  3. It’s not really surprising. The writing has pretty much been on the wall for the past 15 months. Once they sold it, and losing 30 years of leadership along with it, trying to keep the ball rolling was always going to be an uphill battle. But, we may not have seen the last of the franchise yet. However, from what I’ve read, it’s not going to be the same.

Always sad to see a long playing show forced to re-tool itself. Just have to stay tuned and see what’s next!

its not looking good. from the sounds of it, Viacom is washing their hands of the series entirely.

  5. That was stupid for Teennick, now I have no reason to watch that channel. But i hope they keep it in Canada and will hopefully move it to a network that will help it in the US. I really dont want to try to find the eps on the internet if they only have it in Canada…

    1. Your kidding right? Disney? Nick? Excuse my language but FUCK NO! Those networks are mostly for kids 3 -16. The things in the show are too graphic or as parents say “inappropriate”. The show wouldn’t fit on those stations.

And ABC family? Keyword: family. Most stations already got their lineup. 515 is like a orphaned kid… Little chance for survival. Maybe they just need a official YT channel.

      1. ABC family has similar shows. It’s not a kids channel.

      2. ABC Family has a lot of dramas on it geared towards teens like Pretty Little Liars, Switched at Birth, The Fosters, Baby Daddy, etc. so it wouldn’t be entirely out of place to see Degrassi on this network. Canada also has the network ABC Spark (a channel similar to Family) in which Degrassi could air on as well if they go with ABC.

      3. Not that it is going there, but just for the record anyone who has seen Pretty Little Liars will attest ABC Family does not shy away from more adult stories or situations. That show has had sex scenes, frank talk about homosexuality, people dying on camera and bloody corpses among other things. So I don’t think they would reject something like open heart based on content. ABC Family is not what it used to be.

  7. This is all so confusing. Right now there is too much information going out and half of it has a different outcome for the show. Like I don’t know what to actually believe right now but I have a feeling it’s not going to be good news. Such a shame.

  8. When people hear a TV show is canceled, we just assume it’s ending and that’s that (no more episodes, no more production).

What’s happening here is TeenNick and MTV Canada are choosing not to air the show anymore and the media outlets are simply reporting the show is canceled, because saying “Degrassi Is Canceled!” is a far sexier headline for a show that’s been around for 14 seasons (aka it’s clickbait).

But at the same time none of the media (except for Entertainment Weekly) is reporting that they’re searching for a new network and the show will continue. Degrassi’s own Music Supervisor and now one of the actors (the guy who plays Mr. Perino) have said filming for season 15 is happening and the show will go on. This is where online fans’ obsession with the show helps, because we’re able to learn more about what’s actually happening as opposed to casual viewers or people who haven’t watched the show in years who are only reading an article about Degrassi being “canceled.”

  11. I think they may have already found a new network, otherwise they wouldn’t have go full steam ahead for season 15. I’m guessing that was the reason for the delay, MTV Canada/TeenNick didn’t renew the show and all parties decided to stay quiet about it (no reason to announce a show’s impending doom) until Epitome found another network. You’ll notice in the press release that they’re on saying the show is ending on TeenNick, and not done altogether.

    1. Yeah, some of the media outlets are simply reporting what they see everyone else reporting (aka the generic “Degrassi is canceled” and “series finale” stuff). But you’ll notice others are saying things like Degrassi is “ending its run on TeenNick,” so you can tell they’re being careful not to imply that Degrassi is 100% dead.

      1. But the thing is, is Viacom going to selling its rights of Degrassi to another network or will they move it to Logo, MTV or whichever they own? If they do who would buy it.?? I know DHX has a few family/Children channels outlits in Canada.

      2. It would cost somebody a lot of money to stop production on 15. Going forward, tho, the big question is without US involvement, what kind of Degrassi are we left with after 15? The key will be finding a US network in order to maintain the same production values the audience of both countries are used to viewing.

      3. Same thing happened to the Winx. They had a great run then they showed half of s6 & the show ended shortly after Xmas in 2013. People water every Sunday for months & they took it off nick.

Then out of nowhere a S7 trailer comes out (a few months ago) but they never told us where they put it. But look at it this way: seniors are GONE! Zoe gets dogged & goes an that’s all there is too it.

    2. I think they just want to an ahead. Its better than sitting doing nothing. Its not doom:) watch Wonder Over Yonder:) be positive like Wonder. An if ur looking for doom then do I have good news 4U! The doom should

Happen in the 4th episode 1st plot. But look on the bright side-> the seniors leave & if we’re lucky so does Zoe. That’s a win win situation. If she goes I’m taking a break. Keeping up with All this is wearing me out.

TN is nothing without the show. Their like a VCR (useless). Their turning into those rerun channels like Centric (black TV station that only shows black shows & movies).

If I were you I’d tape my fave scenes on my iPod & find the EPs on YT after they air. I know I am. Maybe I’ll post a google drive link so everyone can get them before the summer ends.

Her 1st name? I guess Zig can take a break. He needs it. The gang shit is enough but throw in Zoe & you got a load of *explosions* I’ll make it in time for the finale. & people… Dont forget to tape your fave scenes with your iPod. & look for EPs

    On YT.

But before I go let’s review: the things Zoe has done: she isn’t fine after her “rape”, doesn’t like Becky telling her to relax, pimps the squad, creates a HIGLY illegal app, her & the girls illcumulate over 1000 pics, the blackmail starts, she shuts the

App down thinking its fine, hurts Frankie after Sim comes in, feels bad & speaks from the heart *gasp!* then Arlene’s dirty work lands the school on the news, the girls like to the police (obstruction), an then the fraud site it born *WAA!* I’m

Pissed to see her last plan. Only an idiot would try to win others back after what she did. There’s only 2 ways out: blame someone or make a fake description. I hope when everyone dogs her she gives up so we can see her leave. Then 15 can

Be a little fresh (like leftover honey baked ham):)

  18. Literally me when I read the headline: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PD3hTWMx9jU

I felt much better after reading all the updates though. I really don’t think any other network would bother picking up Degrassi unless they completely retooled the show to be more in line with other teen shows (hour long episodes and fewer main characters being the main changes that would need to be done). I’d be fine with the show going online as long as they don’t make me pay for each episode or buy a season pass, although I wouldn’t mind if they moved to Hulu or Netflix (actually, that’d probably be the best outcome).

  19. The best option is for it to wind up on Netflix or Hulu but honestly I can’t see that happening because the show really hasn’t been that popular in these past few years. I have a feeling it will wind up on Family Channel in Canada and on YouTube or some other online medium in the US.

This is all so sad to me, as someone who’s been watching the show since the first episode aired on The-N, I never really envisioned a time when the show could ever be canceled. But the fact of the matter is the network itself is rebranding in such a way that Degrassi doesn’t really fit anymore, couple that with the plummeting ratings the past few seasons and the decision isn’t all that shocking.

I kind of just wish that instead of clinging to life (to produce what, one or two more seasons exclusively for YouTube, or Tumblr fans?) the show runners were able to know that the show was ending and could have composed a season accordingly giving us an appropriate series finale. However, that obviously isn’t the case. I just think instead of trying to squeeze every last dime out of the Degrassi cash cow (or appease the fans, however you look at it) it might be time to hang their hats up.

That being said I highly doubt that’ll be the case and my money’s on the show finding another temporary home for another season or two before the show is beaten to a bloody pulp.

This will never happen but if we do get a 15th and final season it’d be interesting to see them do somewhat of an update season ala Skins season 7. Where they pretty much just go through fan favorites throughout the years and show us what they’re up to now. Where Degrassi and Skins are different is that this show could actually organically intertwine most of these stories. (Is nobody going to mention the fact that Paige, Marco, Ellie, etc’s 10 year reunion would be this year despite the fucked up timeline that is Degrassi?)

  20. It’s defiantly not a coincidence that the year DHX Media buys Degrassi is the same year that it’s taken off Teenick. My guess is either that a) DHX Media asked Teenick to pay more money to license the show or b) DHX Media wants to take the show in a completely new direction, and shop around at a bigger network with a larger audience than Teenick has to offer.

The show is not cancelled. Mr.Perrino’s actor has given us shooting dates for Season 15. Also, none of the actors or producers have stated that the show is ending after Season 14. Clearly Viacom was just bitter that the show was being pulled off Teenick, and spun the story in a way to make it look like they were the ones that canned it.

Stohn was talking about some big announcements a few weeks ago, so my money is that one of them is about Degrassi’s new home both in the US and Canada. Fans need to relax, there is way more evidence that we are getting a Season 15 than there is not.

That being said, this is a perfect season to end Teenick’s run on Degrassi. Season 14 feels very much like a closing season, as it details the final days of longtime fan favorites such as Claire, Eli, Luke, and Ali (among others). I really wish they had decided to start the episodes in June and air them weekly, but after waiting over five months for 14B I’ll take what I can get.

  21. So Teennick doesn’t want Degrassi or Degrassi doesn’t want Teennick? If Teennick doesn’t want Degrassi I think they’re making a mistake. When I lived at home with my mom as a teen I made her get the Dish package with Teennick just for Degrassi. I’m sure there are other people how only watch Teennick for this show, I can’t be the only one. Well, it’s fine by me since I don’t like Teennick anyway I don’t mind kicking it to the curb.

Degrassi will just need to continue somewhere else. It must. My heart sank when I read that it was cancelled. At 25yo, that’s an odd thing to admit lol. If it goes on Netflix that would be great for me since I already have it. The first half of season 14 I had to watch online on the Canadian website because the US website was so horrible. If it goes online for a fee I’d understand, but I’d probably have to part ways with the show. I can’t justify buying each episode.

You would think they’d do something about the misconception that Degrassi is ending but, I guess anything for ratings….

Everyone thought Mindy Project was cancelled, but it got picked up on Hulu and will still have episodes airing. If they don’t find a network in the US willing to take it on I’m sure online streaming networks (like Netflix or Hulu) would be a great alternatives. There are also so many new ones now in Canada and there is always youtube or an alternative online streaming options they could consider. In Canada I’m surprised MTV is deciding to drop the show, maybe a channel like M3 (which carries PLL, TVD, Reign, etc.), ABC Spark, or YTV (it airs Open Heart) will consider taking on the show, or even a major network channel like CTV (it used to air on this channel for a while as well).
