“Are you really going to lie for this guy?”

1409-1At the beginning of the episode Maya overhears Dallas talking about his car being involved in a hit-and-run, and she puts two and two together.ย  She goes to Miles’ house to talk to him, but he insists all he needs to do is take his car to the shop before his dad notices.ย  However, Mr. Hollingsworth spotted the car and demands to know what happened.ย  When Maya sees Mr. H grab Miles, she lies and tells him they were hit by a car that took off.ย  Mr. H then demands they go to the police station to report it.

At the station, Maya lies to the officer and tells him they were shopping at the mall and were hit in the parking lot.ย  He tells her to draw a diagram of the parking lot and list which stores they visited, and as long as her story matches Miles’ they’ll be alright.ย  At school Maya freaks out because she knows they’re going to get caught, but Miles is high.ย  She realizes she lied for nothing when Miles doesn’t care that they’re going to get in trouble, and in the moment he decides to confess to Dallas that he was the one who hit his car.ย  Miles also tries to provoke Dallas into hitting him, but Alli convinces Dallas to walk away.ย  Maya winds up back at the police station and her mom’s upset because Maya’s hurting herself trying to save Miles.ย  Maya’s mom tells her she can’t help Miles if he won’t help himself, so Maya tells the officer the truth this time.ย  Afterward, Miles thanks Maya for caring about him and the two learn Mr. H used his power to make sure they won’t have a criminal record.ย  Maya tells Miles that he needs to start trying to help himself, but Miles somberly tells her that he can’t tell anyone about his dad.

GRADE: B-
QUICK REVIEW: I’ve finally reached the point where I’m suffering from “Maya trying to save Miles and destroying herself in the process” fatigue.ย  Thankfully, Maya’s mom hit the nail on the head with the point of this plot:ย  you can’t help people who aren’t willing to help themselves.ย  There’s some scary scenes in this episode though when it comes to Miles, because it’s as if he’s so beaten down that he doesn’t care anymore.ย  He practically begs Dallas to hit him, and despite finally realizing Maya’s been trying to help him, he sees no way out in dealing with his dad.ย  The ball has officially been placed in Miles’ court when it comes to dealing with his personal demons.

Inspector Imogen on the case

1409-2Imogen is presented with the perfect opportunity for a juicy Degrassi News story:ย  Hunter reveals someone at Degrassi is sending pictures of their boobs for money and shows Imogen a pic, so she decides to investigate.

Jack repeatedly tries to discourage Imogen from looking into Degrassi Nudes for obvious reasons, but that doesn’t stop Imogen from wanting to find out who’s responsible.ย  Imogen’s investigation is interrupted when she accidentally reveals what she’s doing to Simpson, who shuts down her story and tells her investigating Degrassi Nudes is a police matter.ย  Jack continues to shrug off the idea of someone sending nude pics for money as no big deal, and Imogen realizes Jack is the one sending pics.ย  Jack also confesses that the entire cheerleading squad is doing it, and Imogen’s furious because she feel as if Jack cheated on her.ย  After a talk Eli, Imogen talks to Jack and forgives her.

GRADE: B
QUICK REVIEW:ย  This isn’t the sexiest of plots and it’s one that’s just waiting to be forgotten.ย  However, wading through my indifference toward Jackogen reveals Degrassi doing something they rarely do: give Imogen’s character some depth, and that’s something worth praising.ย  She’s angry at Jack for two reasons: one reason is Imogen feels Degrassi Nudes reinforces the idea that women are seen as little more than objects, further strengthening the belief that women aren’t viewed as equal to men (*gasp* continuity from the Imogen we saw in Dig Me Out and Power To The People!).ย  Another reason is she views Jack’s willingness to show her boobs to anyone, even boys, as cheating.ย  Imogen and Jack are two quirky girls seemingly attracted to each other’s quirkiness, but as we’ve seen multiple times they’re often on different levels about things.ย  It’s good to see Imogen standing up for herself instead of “Spineless Imogen” rearing her ugly head and just accepting whatever Jack does because Imogen doesn’t want to rock the boat.

Of course the most underrated aspect of the episode is the fact Simpson now knows about Degrassi nudes.ย  He will address the school about it.ย  Police will be involved.

The hot mess that is “Eclewcky”

1409-3Drew’s got a choice to make: he’s either got to go with Clare to her birthing class, or have dinner with Becky and her grandmother.ย  Drew chooses the latter, but finds himself distracted during dinner once Clare texts him to tell him their baby kicked.ย  After unintentionally revealing to Becky’s grandmother that he’s having a baby with another girl, Becky’s upset and Drew feels torn between Becky and Clare.ย  Drew decides that he needs to be there for Clare and the baby, so he chooses to break up with Becky.

Drew goes with Clare to her first ultrasound and they discover they’re having a boy; they both agree to name him Adam.ย  Once Drew leaves so Clare can finish the rest of her appointment, she tells the doctor that she’s amazed they can tell the sex of the baby at 12 weeks.ย  The doctor tells Clare is 16 weeks pregnant, which would mean Drew isn’t the father.

GRADE: B
QUICK REVIEW:ย  The bombshell at the end is a monster of its own that we can hold off discussing until next week.ย  However, the meat of this episode made me proud of Drew.ย  In a rare move, he doesn’t have to be told what to do, he makes the responsible decision on his own.ย  Also, kudos to Becky for acknowledging that because of the situation Drew can’t give her what she needs.ย  Degrassi gives fans an early Christmas present:ย  the end of one of the show’s most-hated couples of all time.

  1. the only thing that through me for a loop was that it might not be drew’s baby after the sacrifice he made with Becky! at the end of the episode i don’t know if anyone saw what the little like next weeks show preview but i saw if flash to Clare talking to Eli and she was like “i have something that might change us!” and Eli’s like ” how stupid are you!” that really made me sad i love Eli and he needs to take it easier on Clare…

  3. Although I love Eclare, I was kind of getting used to the fact that Drew was the father. But, now that they dropped that bombshell, I’m on the computer trying to find more spoilers! I totally missed the last season, so I don’t know the time phrase of when she slept with Eli or Drew, so I can’t put the puzzle pieces together. What if Drew isn’t the father? All of that for NOTHING! Although this can be good for Eclare, I honestly want DREW to be the father. The moment that they had at the ultrasound was so cute! I’m really hoping they won’t make Clare turn out to be a messy girl when it comes to sleeping around(if you know what I mean). . . Let Drew to be the father!!!

    1. As much as I love Eclare, I agree with you that I was enjoying Clare and Drew’s interactions. The ultrasound was adorable! Eli is the father 100%, based on the timeline, and there have been a lot of clues along the way to confirm that. But calling Clare a messy girl? She’s slept with two guys total — Eli and Drew. Her relationship was deteriorating with Eli while he was off at college, and Drew served as emotional support for Clare, so Clare ended it with Eli (after a recent visit from Eli, when the baby was conceived), then slept with Drew once. Clare just survived cancer, and I think part of sleeping with Drew was this impulse to do what makes you happy in the moment, live every day to the fullest.

As Eli said, Clare and him breaking up was actually one of the best things that could have happened — Eli got to experience NYC and college life to the fullest, grow as a person, and then come to the conscious decision that he still loves Clare and wants her back in his life. I’m really scared to think that Dallas may be the one to tell Drew and Imogen may be the one to tell Eli the news… Clare needs to suck it up and confront both of them immediately. Obviously Eli is not going to forgive easily, but there is hope for an Eclare fairytale ending after all. And really, did anyone ever doubt that?

I get that Drew is trying to be a better guy now, I really do. Ending it with Becky was the right move — a very mature move, and it’s nice to see that Drew came to that conclusion on his own. But this is the guy’s who’s first reaction when he found out about the pregnancy was what will Becky think? How will I tell my mommy? Not Clare are you okay, how can I support you, etc. Dallas had to tell Drew to man up and be involved in the baby’s life. Drew can have the best intentions in the world, but he’s not ready for parenthood. I’m sure Drew will go through a tough mourning process, but I hope he ultimately feels some relief and goes on to University to study Political Science.

  4. The advantage of Imogen lead plots is a level of Imogeness that keeps it from being bland. If they sent any of the other girls (or boys who would say no to nudes) it’d be a plot we’d happily want to skip.

Becky has been getting a bit too selfish in this season… I especially didn’t appreciate her using her faith as a sword to throw at Drew for a relationship SHE KNEW WAS COMPLICATED WHEN SHE GOT BACK TOGETHER WITH HIM.

    1. The plot can’t be skipped. It is needed to explain the next episodes. But I just wanted to see Zoe get expelled but if she gets arrested too that’s like a belated gift. I saw from the previews that she lies in front of the whole school. I bet I know what it is. So sad. Good thing Frankie’s plan makes

Her get expelled. I was right all along. She will be like Luke. Either in Juvie or getting a “other” category spot below Luke in the wikia page. Didn’t even last a full year. Now I know why Rich The Kid called her a stupid b*tch in his “Famous” song. I loved her scenes but oh well. An Imogen grabbing her

Girls was hot. Hunter got a 300$ phone an a 1500$ computer an he can’t tell the skin color difference between Imogen & Jack? But she doesn’t know how many pics Jack took. Zoe made over 15000$ so Jack took lots. Imogen wouldn’t forgive that. I love Sim. Once we see him talk in the next episode I will put him in my fave category. I don’t mind waiting 11 weeks now.

An Becky is funny. If she can’t stand the heat get the fuck out! Wait till she finds out the kid ain’t his.. She should understand how to devote tour life to something to have it taken away (Adam). She acted like a black woman. I hope Jonah only likes her as a friend.

Don’t care about Miles. An is he really a billionaire? If so why the fuck he only got a Mustang? Surprised he didn’t get a Lamb. I think he can turn straight again.

I disagree. Clare sleeping with Drew was ridiculously out of character. I might have found it more believable if they had done it at one of their houses when nobody was home, but in the prop room during a school activity? No matter how much Clare has changed for the worse over the years, this was too out of left field.

“goes on to University to study Political Science.”

LOL, Drew won’t get accepted anywhere and if by some miracle he does, he definitely won’t survive such a demanding program. Political science is for the Libertys and the Clares of the world.

      2. The “Angry Black woman” meaning is for someone who yells loud an when a guy tells them to be quiet or talk softer they usually say something the equivalent to “aw hell naw you don’t tell me to be quiet, I talk as loud as I want!” An so on. An they usually make a scene. Usually with something broken

Or a guy physically hurt. But Becky is almost like that. She said “no I will not lower the volume” which is the white women way of “awe hell naw you don’t tell me to be quiet”! An throwing the drink on him is the same as a black woman rock in a guys shit. We saw her act out twice an I like it. Now I wish

Jonah could only like her as a friend.

  8. I honestly HATE how they’re making Clare look in this season. I would expect this type of situation to happen to Alli (basing my opinion off of previous seasons), not Clare. Clare and Alli should be switched, to be honest. But then again, it is a interesting shocker. I mean, if your watching Clare in previous seasons, you would never guess she’d be pregnant in future seasons. Especially after the cancer situation. So the whole pregnancy idea was good since it kept this season more interesting, but when they hinted that Drew may not be the father, I GOT SO UPSET!

Why the hell are they making Clare look like this … who slept around with more than one guy and now isn’t 100% sure who the father is. That is so not Clare! They messed up her character in this season, and in season 13.

But, I can’t wait to see the mid-season finale! AND figure out who’s certainly the father.

    2. In my opinion, the writers have done an amazing job showing Clare’s evolution of beliefs, from being very religious to questioning faith during her parent’s divorce, to coming into her own beliefs, to uncovering and working towards clear goals — become a journalist, go to Columbia, and be with Eli. I think it’s great that the writers are showing that there are risks to sex, and even “the good girl” can make a mistake. I also think you see a little of the early seasons Clare with her decision to keep the baby, saying: maybe they’re a path for all of us that’s different and better than what we imagined (choosing based on her heart vs. her head).

It’s not that Clare was sleeping around with different guys at the same time, which I wouldn’t judge her even if she were — it’s that when she found out she was pregnant, she just jumped to the wrong conclusion (a consistent character trait of Clare) that she conceived the last time she had sex, which was with Drew. Clare got fed up with trying to make a long distance relationship work with Eli, so she broke up with Eli. She only ever slept with Drew once (because he then decided he didn’t want to be her rebound from Eli). Four weeks prior to Clare hooking up with Drew, Clare was still in a relationship with Eli, who came home from college for a weekend to see Clare. Clare was pregnant when she slept with Drew, and had been for a month. Clare immediately assumes Drew is the father probably because she had spotting that she mistook for a period and no obvious signs of pregnancy. So now that Clare knows she is 16 weeks along, she knows Eli is the father.

People said the same thing about Liberty. That’s why I didn’t even bat an eye when Clare got knocked up. They already did a pregnancy storyline with a nerdy, overachieving girl, so it’s no longer shocking when they do it again.

I do think that comparing Season 8 Clare and current Clare is depressing. This is not how character development works, writers! They’re supposed to change for the better!

      1. But Irl people don’t always change for the better so why should Degrassi characters?? With the levels of disruption in her life just the fact that she’s still a high achieving and hard working girl who actually makes a decision about her baby boy noy based on the selfishness of ‘I don’t think I’m ready for this’ like a lot of other characters would have.

      2. True, real life people don’t always change for the better, but that’s real life. This is fiction and people like to see characters grow. Clare’s line about not knowing how to be single shows just how far downhill her character has gone. That line was actually really sad.

BTW, “I don’t think I’m ready for this” is NOT a selfish decision. It’s looking out for the baby’s best interest. How is that selfish?

  9. The past two episodes have really changed my outlook on season 14 and revealed a problem that I think is been going on all season. Even though the plot started off very strong it’s always felt like I’m watching season 13E. These plots seem horribly similar to many of the plots we experienced in 13 and seem to be dragging on forever. Even the cheerleading plot which I feel is the most solid, has really run its course in terms of watch-ability.

Hollingsworth drama, Zoe’s Powertripping, and Claire’s relationships are the only things the season is going to be remembered for and these are all things we got in season 13. The only differences in season 14 we’re getting better versions of those things. They are amazing stories but diminished by the fact that there so repetitive. Sure they can be entertaining but for me at least I’m ready to move on to some really uncharted waters.

I could go more into it and this is totally just my opinion and I’m many people feel differently but I just needed to rant a little. :D

    1. I totally see your point and appreciated the rant, so I’ll give it a try :) I don’t necessarily think they’re recycling plots from season 13, but they’re building off of a lot of what already happened and sticking to limited plots with a smaller ensemble cast than usual. Which I actually like to a certain extent, because you get much more developed plots and characters. On one hand, I like that for the first time they’re taking more episodes to resolve plots. So many times Degrassi introduces and resolves a plot in a single episode, and never comes back to the plot again. On the other hand, if you’re not a fan of all the plots this season, you’re tuning out every other week. It’s almost forced down your throat, and you do get sick of the same plots week after week. That’s why I liked the Zig losing the arm wrestling plot — it wasn’t the most interesting plot at all, but it was relatable and not overly dramatic, and most importantly, it was small enough in scope that it could be resolved in a single episode. I wish every week had one plot like this, with minor characters that haven’t had much screen-time.

    2. Well, I mean of course it is going to be…It’s all the same school year! It is easy to forget that season 14 started only a few weeks after season 13 ended in the show timeline, so of course they will be still dealing with the same problems. They were stuck in a situation where they could give all the seniors a rushed short story arc for season 14 before they graduated or flesh out the major ones they had and I think they are doing a good job.

I was bracing myself for the doctor to say that she didn’t hear a heartbeat or something devastating about the baby. Just when I had accepted that Drew was the father, HE’S NOT. My heart aches for Drew because you could see that he was getting attached to his (former) unborn child. This situation is a mess. 13. There were some weird things that happened in this episode. First being that it just seemed interesting to me that Imogene confronted hunter which also led to jack being in the scene too. Idk it was just weird that the power squad held him hostage last week, and by him asking Imogene if that was her boobs meant he wasn’t the one sending the girls messages. Maybe they’ll have jack acknowledge that later.

Also I find it crazy that through whatever appointments Clare has had to go through, she never knew the exact week of conception.

You know what so interesting about Clare, is that her family grew up pretty religious and that was apart of her storyline coming on the show. It’s so interesting that of all people she’s the one to end up with this storyline. Even sleeping with Drew so impulsively after making such a big deal about wanting to lose her virginity to jake. I felt like at some point she should kind of find her religion again.

  14. I have a theory about what might happen.

I think that Eli isn’t going to be so supportive when he realizes that the child is his because he’s still upset over the fact that Clare lied to him about sleeping with Drew. At this point, Drew is going to step up and support Clare while she’s pregnant with Eli’s kid, realizing that she’s all alone and needs someone. At some point, Clare will realize that Drew is the one who has consistently been there for her and not Eli. Clare will miscarry, and then she and Drew will finally have their shot. Notice how the doctor didn’t directly answer Drew’s question when he asked if the baby looked healthy. I think this is foreshadowing Clare’s miscarriage.

Now he has a kid, which will heavily hamper of not derail his college plans (even with it being his kid she can’t really go to new york and expect it to all fall in place. She still needs to be with a support system beyond Eli to work it out). And on top of that he still now knows she slept with Drew. This is far from “good news” for anyone expect Drew. Who given he used a condom ultimately did nothing wrong and dogged a big bullet while still secure in the knowledge had it been he would have done the right thing. Him breaking up with Becky is bad, but he still got off light. And while he might feel some regret that it wasn’t his as he embraced the idea, I am betting after the initial shock relief will be his main feeling.

In truth knowing it is Claire’s baby doesn’t really make things “better” for Eclaire. All the problems with Dew and her are now her and Eli’s problems and the hurt he felt she slept with Drew won’t go away. And she made his eventually knowing even more of a roller coaster.

She made a huge mess. Being TV I am sure it will have a happy ending. But realistically Claire is continuing to live in denial if she thinks this is somehow a good development.

I don’t see how people can be supportive of Eclare now because of how emotional abusive he has been toward clare. Eli is the one that verbally attacks Clare and yet she is the one always being scrutinized by fans. She even belittles herself by begging for forgiveness and to be taken back by Eli. That is an emotionally torturous relationship to be in. Raising a baby in that environment is not healthy. Ugh, this story is ridiculous….and the timeline is sketchy. To be honest, I never assumed Eli and clare were having sex during their rocky relationship and lack of communication.

I know that I’m probably in the minority here, but I’m really hoping that the season ends with Clare and Drew finally getting their long overdue shot. It just seems pointless to have put the two of them through all of this drama, only to chalk them up to a one-night stand. Drew and Clare have this undeniable chemistry, in my opinion.

History has shown us that Eli and Clare are both way too high-strung to work out as a couple. Sure, Drew might have made mistakes with girls in the past (i.e. Alli and Katie), but he is his best self around Clare, and I think that Clare seems much happier around him than she does around Eli. Maybe Drew didn’t want to start a relationship with Clare after the two of them slept together, but I think his reason was legitimate. After all, no one wants to be a rebound.

      1. Yes, I want Clare and Drew to be endgame and I too realize that we are in the minority. Sure I used to ship Eclare, but there’s a line that I had to draw because of how manipulative and controlling Eli had become. With Drew and Clare there is none of that, there’s lack of communication, but that is fixable. However that all went down the drain because somehow this pregnancy storyline supposedly about Drew and Clare is all about Eli and his feelings.
Drew and Clare deserve another shot at their relationship…no Eli attached.

As awful as both potential fathers are, Drew is much, MUCH worse. People might go on about how supportive he’s being NOW, but the baby isn’t here yet. He’s the type to bail once things get too hard. Clare dodged a bullet (assuming the baby even survives). Eli has his issues too, but he isn’t as flaky or as stupid as Drew.
