Zoë’s Birthday Blackmail

1407-1It’s Zoë’s birthday, and she receives a mysterious package from a stranger:  a doll programmed to say “I know about Degrassi nudes.”  Not knowing who it’s from, Zoë becomes paranoid.  She also ends up receiving a text message from a blocked number saying they’ll reveal the Degrassi Nudes scheme publicly unless Zoë quits power cheer.  She prepares to resign by lying and telling the other girls she needs to quit power cheer because she was offered a movie role, but before they can do that they surprise her with a cake and personal bracelet.  Zoë can’t bring herself to quit, so she ends up telling Grace to shut down Degrassi Nudes.  Afterward, Zoë informs the squad that she’s shut down Degrassi Nudes for good, but everyone on the squad receives a text message from the same anonymous stranger blackmailing Zoë.  The person threatens to reveal power cheer is behind Degrassi Nudes unless the girls kick Zoë off the squad.

GRADE: B
QUICK REVIEW: This is one of those conflicting scenarios where Zoë did questionable things with good intentions (in her mind), but now someone’s threatening to take away the best thing she’s gained from it (having REAL friends).  The PLL-style setup of someone anonymously blackmailing Zoë is amusing, especially the creepy doll.  She lost her acting career.  She lost a sense of normalcy after her sexual assault, because people continued to treat her like a victim.  It was great to see a multi-dimensional character like Zoë legitimately feel accepted in the moment, because all she’s ever wanted since coming to Degrassi is to fit in.  However, Zoë seems to think she can do “whatever it takes” to get what she wants, and it looks like she’s poised to learn another difficult lesson about how quickly one can lose it all.

Tristan FINALLY Realizes Miles Is In Trouble

1407-2Winston believes Miles hasn’t been himself, and tells Tristan that Miles changed when the two of them started hanging out.  Tristan confronts Miles about it, and Miles tells Tristan that he isn’t the problem…as a matter of fact, Miles assures Tristan he has no problem at all.

When Miles doesn’t show up to class for their presentation, Tristan shows up at his house to find Miles smoking weed in his pool.  Tristan believes Miles has a weed addiction, and Winston suggests they stage an intervention.

GRADE: C
QUICK REVIEW: Maybe I missed something, but since when did Miles basically develop a weed addiction? It feels like they needed a tangible angle to have Tristan finally join the “Something’s Wrong With Miles” Club, because Miles just moping around ALL OF THE TIME isn’t noticeable enough. Tristan has been off in his own Miles-esque universe this season, ignoring every potential warning sign that something is wrong.  That’s his character’s major flaw though, especially when it comes to romance; Tristan can be so blinded by “love” that he can’t see what’s happening right in front of his face.  His character has been useless so far this season, and besides the simple fact he and everyone else finally realize Miles is spiraling out of control, it’s hard to be engaged with Tristan’s POV when you stack it next to an emotionally gripping one like Maya’s.  With that said, I’m expecting the actual intervention in the next episode to be better.

The Beginning Of The End For Bhandallas?

1407-3Alli reveals she’s been accepted into the University of Cambridge.  Dallas is upset she didn’t tell him she was accepted to a school so far away, and Alli says they need to talk soon about their future.  Believing that Alli will probably break up with him, Dallas decides to plan a date to wow her.  Shay overhears his plans and tells him they’re dumb, saying he needs to be more romantic.  Dallas plans a romantic evening involving dinner and staying overnight at a hotel, but Alli says no because she doesn’t want to have sex with him.  Dallas assumes Alli won’t sleep with him because she’s already planning on breaking up with him, and he yells at Shay by calling her date idea dumb.  Shay tells Dallas he shouldn’t be with someone who doesn’t want him, and reveals she has a crush on him.  As she goes in to kiss him, Alli walks in.  Dallas continues to think Alli doesn’t want him and doesn’t want a committed relationship with him that’s long distance.  Alli tells she doesn’t want to sleep with him because of how badly it’s messed up her past relationships…also, she wants them to build a future together that might include him moving overseas with her.

GRADE: A-
QUICK REVIEW: Sex happens on Degrassi, but rarely are the complexities of it fleshed out or discussed between characters on screen without massive consequences!  Dallas was in full panic mode, and honestly I would be too if someone I was seeing was suddenly offered an opportunity that meant moving away.  It’s a scary thought that someone you care about will go off to live a life elsewhere, and could possibly forget you.  Dallas is a good guy, but there was almost a vibe of him expecting Alli to prove her love for him by having sex with him.  If the two did it, it would be some kind of confirmation in his mind that she still has feelings for him (which was ridiculous thinking on his part).  The best part of this plot comes from Alli’s perspective:  she firmly puts Dallas in his place, not only calling him out on his one-track mind, but also reminding him that when it comes down to her personal decision to have sex, it’s about her and no one else.

  1. Whoever plays Shay is a beautiful actress. I didn’t notice it until this episode. I was curious who she was going to want to be with since they released her little character info before the season started.
Tristan bugs me. They made him way too stereotypically gay and I’ll be really glad when he’s off the show. I liked him with Yates since that was interesting but everything else he does just kinda bugs me. I’m not homophobic but being a walking flamboyant stereotype is a bit much and it’s mostly unrealistic. Miles bugs me too with all this moodiness lately. I hope they fix him in the next episode so he cuts the crap.
I have no idea who is trying to get Zoe off the team but maybe Frankie? Idk I don’t really get the impression she’d be capable of doing this so maybe Grace? Or Hunter since he doesn’t like cheerleaders? lol I really have no idea.

    1. Shay is really pretty. I really liked that they gave her a chance to shine a little bit outside of the cheerleader scenes. As for Tristan, I don’t think it’s unrealistic that he’s very flamboyant (and to be honest he isn’t even that flamboyant). I’m gay myself and I can assure you that most guys that were out at my high school were pretty much similar to Tristan. I mean, one of my best friend even went to prom in a limousine painted with Lady Gaga-themed stuff. What is annoying is the fact that he’s become a complete selfish monster who can’t even realise that people are hurting all around himself. I’m really looking forward to the next episode to understand what the writers are going for with his character. I’m hoping he’ll be redeemable at some point.

      2. While it’s true that Tristan has been overly flamboyant in the last few episodes, which is causing viewers to see him as obnoxious, its probably not as ooc or stereotypical as we think. Tristan is finally dating who *in his eyes* is the perfect boyfriend whom he never thought he could have (read: trophy boyfriend). Tristan has a huge inferiority complex because he knows that guys won’t go for a flamobyant fem guy like him, and the few guys he’s been interested in have either a) not been gay, b) not interested in him c) creeps (Yates, in particular). So, of course, finally getting a guy like Miles who he knows girls will fawn over (and he has been promoted as much by the marketers and producers of Degrassi) would give him a huge ego boost, causing him to express it in the only way he can, which is by being super flamboyant whenever he gets to see Miles or is talking about him in some way (especially in that last episode – Winston put him down for supposedly causing Miles’s emotional problems, which is reasonable considering that Miles and Tristan hooked up around the same time Miles’s abuse got worse.) And yes, I can see why other people find it super irritating to constantly see Tristan put other people down, but remember – other people have put him down for being “too gay”. None of this justifies his obnoxious behavior, but at least now we know that it’s not because the producers of Degrassi are stereotyping gay guys.

As for why Tristan can’t tell why Miles is being abused, it’s because a) Miles lies to Tristan about his relationship with his father and b) Miles is always super happy when he’s around Tristan. In 14×01, Tristan asks him if he cares about his dad’s opinion, to which Miles denies. In 14×02, at the end, Miles tells him that he made up with his father, which Tristan accepts but Maya does not. Now let’s remind ourselves that when Tristan accused Miles of using him to piss off his dad, Miles denied it and then broke down in front of Maya. Only Maya knew how bad his condition was, which is why she was the only one who knew that something was wrong with Miles. Frankie and Hunter thought that Miles’s near physical abuse was just another instance of verbal abuse resulting from Miles disrespecting his dad, so they didn’t suspect much, and Tristan probably thought the same (to address those who thought that Tristan should have known better since he already knew about the toxicity of the father-son relationship.) Also, Miles always forgets about his toxic relationship with his father when he’s kissing Tristan. He also confirmed that he genuinely liked Tristan in 14×05, and in 14×07 he only became upset when Tristan started talking about his father after he walked in on them kissing, which Tristan didn’t notice because a) he was too focused on his relationship with Miles and b) Mr. Hollingsworth always treats his son very nicely in front of other people (Remember him hugging Miles when the press walked in on 14×02?)

Now let’s remind ourselves what happened with Tristan last season. He thought that he finally found a man who was also interested in him. Yates took advantage of his emotional vulnerability and basically preyed on him (ending with statutory rape), which Tristan never fully acknowledged. Maya tried to protect him by breaking her promise to keep his relationship with Yates a secret (and also not do anything about it) and told the principal, causing Tristan to have that awesome rant about how Maya always got perfect guys (read: Miles) while he had his one man taken away from him. Maya most definitely did the right thing, and she would definitely find support from others and society, but Tristan never fully coped with having his trust broken by both Yates and Maya and is now blaming Maya for this. As for his nasty behavior towards Maya, this originates from how Tristan thinks Maya betrayed him by taking away the boys he (supposedly) “crushed on first” (which is a source of contention and polarization within the fandom) and the one man he thought he had a successful relationship with. (Note that this is merely from Tristan’s PoV, and the reasoning is in-character and as illogical as he is when he is blinded by love.) So he would naturally assume that Maya is doing the same when she tries to help Miles.

Which is reasonable, considering how aggressive her techniques are. This began when she tries to get Miles to open up about his fight with his dad in 14×02. She kept telling him that he needed to tell someone what was wrong inside his head or else he was going to get worse. This is probably because she thinks that he is suffering from depression instead of realizing that he is being abused. In S13, she always took his dad’s side whenever Miles acted out (like during their fight at Miles’s party when Zoe got drunk). She also thinks that he is suffering from the type of depression that Cam had and would hurt himself, and told her mom this in 14×04, causing Miles to walk in her house (without knocking!) and accuse her of *not being over him*. Thus, Maya gives others the impression that she isn’t over Miles.

To be fair, Miles (and Tristan, Grace, (“still holding out hope for Moneybag Miles?”) and Zoe and everyone else) had a good reason for accusing her of this, as Maya always acts aggresively to try to help Miles, which comes across as not being over her ex. She even asked Miles if he was dating Tristan because of her, before he broke down in the locker room in 14×02. And then in 14×06, Maya broke into his account with Grace and Zig. (Yes, she was probably doing this because she wants to know why Miles is missing from school but she invaded Miles’s privacy to do so.) Now, considering that Maya is Miles’ s ex, she should be respecting his privacy (which he set the standard for in 14×02 when he chose not to tell her about the abuse) and not go so far as to hacking his account to find answers. Instead, she could have told Zoe to tell Tristan to help him or find an indirect solution similar to that. (But of course, since Maya *is* suffering from PTSD from not helping Cam, she couldn’t do that has to be everyone’s savior to control her trauma and resulting PTSD from Cam.)

Because Maya took the more aggressive approach, Miles and Tristan thought she couldn’t get over Maya, which is when Tristan had the fight with her. In 14×06, Maya broke into Miles’ s home with Grace and Zig’s help. She appeared to be feeling Miles, to which Miles woke up and found out that she broke into his account. Then Tristan walked into the conversation and seeing Maya alone with Miles (and probably overhearing the breaking into the account part) verbally attacks Maya. So naturally, Tristan would assume that Maya is trying to take his ex, which is reasonable, considering that Miles and Grace think the same way, and Miles didn’t appreciate the way she broke into his account. Although Tristan’s behavior towards Maya was unacceptable, his paranoia is reasonable, as he isn’t alone.

Tristan’s character is still being developed on Degrassi. His plotline of never getting the love he wanted is still being touched upon, although indirectly. This is why he always goes crazy over Miles and so absorbed with their relationship, although new couples are always like that. His anger towards Maya is driven by Yates. Now, in 14×08, Miles addresses his insecurity for wanting love by telling him that he’s chasing Miles because he’s desperate for his love. I think that once Miles’ s abuse plot becomes less of a focus of the show, Tristan’s insecurity and Yates storyline will be touched upon, and his character will developed and become more nuanced as a result of his desperation for love dying.

    3. Also agreed about Tristan. Friggin’ Kurt from “Glee” is a more nuanced character than he is. There certainly are gay boys in real life who are on the more flamboyant end of the spectrum, but Tristan is just too over the top. He belongs in some lousy teen movie. As much as I hate “Glee”, I’d say that Kurt is a far better representative of such types, at least in comparison to Tristan. Or if we wanna go back a few decades, Rickie Vasquez from “My So-Called Life”. Tristan wouldn’t be so problematic a character if he wasn’t so mean-spirited. He’s got no redeeming characteristics, anymore. Now he’s just an offensive caricature.

I wonder when Zoe replied to the messages if we saw the persons number? if we got a good enough view of it we could compare that to Frankie’s number an see if its a match since I don’t

think we saw Hunters number on TV. but he better get a damn VPN. that way no one can track him. there is no IP address with a VPN. we just have to find out in 2 weeks when Imogen is looking for the “D.N leader” & that might be when the person either shows himself or sends her a message.

  2. I think Dallas’s delivery of the sexual scenario was all wrong. He came at her as if he was the CEO of her sexuality. That’s not how you approach your FIRST TIME being intimate together. When a guy makes concrete plans about sex and basically TELLS YOU that you will be screwing him, he doesn’t care about how you feel. Did anyone pick up on the shade when Dallas said “you’ve done it with other guys?” It’s true but damn. It’s not polite to throw someone’s sexual past in their face. Anyway, I’m proud of Degrassi for showing a female having true emotional maturity about her sexuality and not giving in to pressure.

Miles and Tristan are irrelevant to me. Tristan has two modes: either having an attitude about something or being blinded by fantasy. I’m still annoyed at how the aftermath of the Mr. Yates situation has yet to be addressed. Miles’s storyline is irritatingly weak in comparison to all of the other ones.

I just want to see the aftermath of the PowerSquad saga. We all know it was Hunter behind the harassment so the “whodunnit” storyline is reaching. They should have incorporated the anonymous storyline a few episodes after we discovered Hunter’s hate for cheerleaders so it wouldn’t be as obvious who the perpetrator was.

Also, Degrassi is giving away too much in the sneak peeks now. I want to feel teased by it, not know the entire plot. Last week they completely gave away Miles’s weed problem. Now that they showed the GPS locator clip, anyone with a brain knows that Hunter is the perpetrator. It wouldn’t even be convincing to incorporate a side this sinister into Frankie’s character.

  3. Tristan has gotten on my last nerve . . . it’s not just the over the top drama queen-ness . . . but he’s just mean. He turns on people on a dime, but heaven forbid anyone hurts his feelings. He owes Maya an apology several times over – for calling her a tramp last week, and for turning his back on her last season after she turned in his creepy-ass boyfriend. He knows now that Grant is a creep – why hasn’t he gone to Maya and atleast acknowledged she was right?

BTW – the weed isn’t Miles’s problem – MILES’S DAD IS! The weed is just a symptom. Why no one but Maya can see this – I don’t understand. Ugh . . . Miles brushing off asking his dad for help on his and Tristan’s history project should have been an enormous, waving red flag to Tristan – but yet again, he’s blind. I’m looking forward to seeing Miles lash out at everyone in the next episode – if only because they’re wrong about him smoking weed being the real problem here. Frankie and Hunter in particular need a wake-up call about their dear daddy – because they’ve made Miles feel like it’s all his fault. Who do they think Dad’s gonna turn to when Miles is out of the house and off at college a year before they are?

I’m may be the only one . . . but so far, I’m just not impressed by Shay. Or Jonah. Both of them have been very flat in their acting. Lola, on the otherhand – she cracked me up this episode, between trying not to cry when they surprised Zoe and her remark about “posing” when Zoe told them that Degrassi Nudes was ending. I see potential for her – but the other two noobs I could care less about.

I dunno if the “stalker” of the cheerleading squad is Frankie or Hunter. I can’t see Frankie doing it – she’s too nice, and she doesn’t have the computer know-how, from what I can tell. Now Hunter . . . I can see him having figured out what really happened regarding Frankie leaving the squad, and him doing it all to get one back on Zoe for his sister – as well as getting one back on Lola and Shay for Arlene. But . . . it’s just too obvious. I can’t help wondering if its someone other than the Hollingsworth twins – someone who would either know how to route the signal to make it look like the internet/cell signal is coming from the Hollingsworth house OR someone who comes to the Hollingsworth house on a regular basis – like Chewy (who would make sense – Frankie is his girlfriend) or Tristan (who Becky told couldn’t be on the squad because he’s a guy). Or it could be Miles . . . but that’s very doubtful. What do you guys think?

    1. Tristan and Miles have been using each other, and most of Miles’s friends/family are doing a certain level of victim blaming, which is keeping everyone right next to Miles from seeing it. Miles acts, his father overreacts in a violent way, but usually not with anyone around to see it. Winston and the Twins are around, but don’t full feel it and do just think Miles should tone his actions down. And Tristan just enables Miles to feel good about himself without fixing anything, whereas Maya would tell Miles to get a handle on his crap pretty much every time Miles did something worth calling out.

Shay hasn’t really been shown in her true element yet, same goes for Jonah and Arlene. Lola, bubblegum haired cheerleader, has. Shay feels promising with her delivery, she carried a lot of self-confidence and power but she didn’t have a huge amount to work with yet. Maybe when we see her as full on athlete diva mode. Where she doesn’t need to be subtle or understated, meanwhile Lola doesn’t need to be subtle or understated ever (sorta like early Imogen). Jonah and Arlene have the same lack of spotlight problems.

The set-up seems to be that Hunter knows, he’s tech savvy, and was capturing pictures on his phone as evidence. Frankie is just the easiest guess from Zoe’s perspective, she doesn’t know Hunter exists/hates the cheerleaders/knows about tech/can be super creepy.

  4. I missed the episode, so did Alli mention Leo and how that affected her at all? That’s why I hate Bhandallas so much. It sends the terrible message that after a traumatic event, all a girl needs is to run into another guy’s arms and everything will be okay. The ink on their annulment wasn’t even dry yet when Alli and Dallas got together. Also, did Jenna make an appearance?

I was hoping that Shay’s crush would have been Connor, because it was have been potentially interesting, particularly from his POV. I guess I should have known better.

I have a theory that Miles accidentally starts the fire while smoking weed at school. Maybe he tosses his joint somewhere hastily when somebody approaches.

Shay’s crush being on Connor would only make sense if Football were still a school activity people care about for plots.

Not necessarily. After his recent makeover, it’s not at all unrealistic that Shay would have a crush on him. He’s also smart, which a lot of girls also find attractive. Since she’s only a niner, she probably won’t be too familiar with Connor’s quirks.

I am proud of Alli for refusing to give in and also acknowledging her past bad choices, but ignoring the Leo situation is terrible writing.

      2. The babycrush that they are starting off as a part of Shay is partly to set up where she’s going, they want to set her up as a Alpha player athlete, which means she’d idolize someone who already does that. While Connor is a good football player, he isn’t the ‘top dog Athlete’ that Dallas is, or Owen and KC beforehand. Honestly I’m glad it isn’t Drew, and at least it makes sense with where they seem to want Shay to go.

And Degrassi summarizing Alli’s love life instead of naming each and every horrible choice she’s made is just a factor of season based writing. The message holds up.

      3. I never really considered the athlete thing. Good point. It’s still disappointing, though. It would have been a great plotline for Connor, especially since he would have probably been oblivious to Shay’s feelings. I wonder if this is going to be another Manny/Craig/Ashley situation.

I understand not directly mentioning Johnny, Drew, etc., but the Leo thing was so recent that they really should have acknowledged it.

  6. I still am not into this cheerleaders on snapchat storyline.

Don’t get me wrong, it has had some interesting twist and turns. But I just can’t see it all resolving in a way that is rewarding.

I know that teenagers might not get the ramifications. I.E. that they are basically pedalling underage porn to teenagers, regardless of if they are teenagers themselves. Yes, being kids they might not get that is what the law would see, but it is the reality of the situation.

I mean can you imagine if word gets out what they did. A bunch of cheerleaders, one of them an actress of some fame and another a senators kid were selling naked picks of themselves online, targeting their own classmates, when most of them aren’t even 18 yet. (hell some aren’t even 16 yet). The media would have a field day with this scandal. it would be EVERYWHERE, talk shows would be talking about it, national news would be giving it some idiot name like “The cheer porn scandal”, everyone on the internet would weigh in on what it means for “the youth of today”. Etc.

In short these girls lives as they know it would be over, they would be totally screwed. good luck getting into college with THAT on your record, most would have some kind of legal ramifications, and Zoe and Grace would be brought up on criminal charges and likely at the very least end up spending time in juvie. Hell given Zoe was largely pimping her classmates (Teen star turned solicitor… film at 11!) and Grace was distributing it. They might be charged as adults once the public gets their pitch forks out.

This isn’t something that realistically once it would fine out would mean Simpson gives them detention, the cheer squad is disband and everyone learns a valuable lesson. This would end with police and press and shame and humiliation.

And while Degrassi is known for “Going there” I can’t imagine with this many main characters (seriously their are like 6 main characters involved in this) that it is going to end with them being found out and getting into any kind of realistic ramifications. I would give the show credit for having balls if this did end with the kind of spectacle, legal mess, and public judgement it would end in in real life. And exploring the different characters dealing with the fallout in the seasons to come. That would be a bold direction. But I don’t see it happening.

Which means when this is all over likely they will somehow avoid getting caught, and seemingly mean they also reaped the rewards with nothing more than some stress for a short time. Which sends a hell of a shitty message. “If you are short of money, sell yourself on the internet when you are under age and it is illegal… it will all work out.”

Maybe they will surprise me. But I just can’t see the end result of this being anything but ridiculous and unrealistic. It is kind of an interesting ride, but hoping the ending doesn’t ruin it.

Gah Damn! here’s my guess. based on the events with the doll.. an the texts, the girls got a test saying “make Zoe quit the squad or I’ll tell.” now technically he did. he puts it online (maybe without Zoe’s name an Imogen finds out an maybe Hunter (might not come close in person) gives her pics an she turns them in to the principal. we will have to see next Wednesday cus the MTV

& the regular peeks will show us. but if that is the case or with just Imo finding out in general it wonders if the police will come. cus Zoe can get over 10 years in total for accessing, possessing and sending porn. I just wanna see her go. I think Sim will find out an we wil see him tell her she is expelled an her mom will come get her & we can see her walk outside if we’re lucky. honestly

I don’t care, after I hear something in the words of expelled i’m good yo. her thing will get worse than detention. her money will get drained by her mom off screen. cus her attacking Frankie is wrong. maybe this is when we hear the Chewie thing from L.C.C.F. I don’t care what happens after that. I think I saw Frankie in the beginning of Teen Spirit. I got a shot of her. I hope its her.

its just a matter of is Zoe gone before the competition. then the girls will be slaves no more. I HAVE A DREAM! an all the drama (most) will just go away. but Clare’s lame ass is still here. so I don’t mind waiting until April if Zoe is gone. I will tape her last scene & then I will make a funny mag cover of her.

I never seen characters go to jail before. they have few episodes left. but just imagine the look on her face when she sees the site or gets caught. but after she’s expelled before F2 I will yell “YESSSSSSSSSS! an I will cry tears of joy. an it just means-> What will Ana go after that? an I guess I will need to focus on another female character. I still like Becky. but Jonah.. shit! everytime I hear Bonah I think of Boner!

id like to see how he tries to get some from her in this episode since she might get the ending. an NEXT TIME: the people need to get a girl that’s actually the age as the character. I mean ya got a 18 year old with B cups & a models body playing a 16 year old? an I found out the girl playing Lola is 18? WHAT? I don’t believe that. that explains her legs & butt.

Zoe is eh to me, hope she gets caught with the nudes situation. Also, waiting on a big Grace storyline this season, cant wait!

  10. Based on the HvV episode with Sim in the beginning its only right for him TK be in the end. That would snake for a good effect. He finds out Zoe’s behind it. Idk if he asks if the cheerleaders are behind it too or not but if the texts come true then yes. He finds out in the end the. Hopefully stops Zoe from

Competing. Maybe we see her in his office an see her get her punishment. Getting expelled would be good. Suspension isn’t good enough. An the person person can still tell everyone to make her get hurt. I can see here leaving before the last commercial. An who knows what the credits would

Be. It depends if she has the 1st or 3rd plot. But seeing her leave is good. It would be too much for her to stay after everyone finding out. Sim will expell her an she will find her person before she leaves. They tell her why they did it an Zoe explains her punishments to them. Or she could say bye to the girls before she leaves. Maybe hug Lola.
