Will TeenNick FINALLY go back to having another new show to go along with Degrassi in primetime?

Epitome Pictures has announced it’s producing a new show called “Open Heart,” which will air on YTV in Canada and TeenNick in the U.S.  Degrassi writer Ramona Barckert is writer and showrunner for this new series, which means I now have high expectations for this show.

Via press release:

**********
OPEN HEART is a gripping mystery series, folded into a sprawling family saga, set against the high-stakes workplace and relationship drama of a hospital. Dylan Blake, the rebellious daughter of a fractured family of doctors, uses her stint as a youth hospital volunteer to secretly investigate the mysterious disappearance of her father.

Karis Cameron (above) is the series’ lead character.  She will play Dylan Blake, the “gutsy and headstrong heroine who is determined to unravel the mystery that plagues the halls of Open Heart Memorial.”

Degrassi alums Justin Kelly, Cristine Prosperi and Dylan Everett will also star (for the full list of characters, click here).  Other notable names joining this series:  Stephen Stohn and Linda Schuyler will co-produce with Ramona Barckert, and longtime Degrassi writer Brendon Yorke is also on board.  Stefan Brogren and Samir Rahem will direct.

This is the first major move Epitome’s made since being acquired by DHX Media.  On the American side it’s awesome to see TeenNick finally getting into the action and adding a new series besides Degrassi and TeenNick Top 10.  Reruns of old Nick shows drive their ratings, but I’d love to see even just a small block of new content geared toward teens.

Stephen Stohn has been tweeting out the twitter handles of many of the people involved with the show:

  1. wack wack wack wack. im not excited. im not happy. epitome has tried how many times at making shows? there only good at degrassi. if all the same ppl from degrassi are crossing over to work on this show its looking to be a carbon copy. la complex was amazing cuz it was like adult degrassi but dis shits wackkk. “set against a hospital” just like every other lame boring ass soap opera. 1. Well if you don’t like it don’t watch it, it’s that simple. Epitome has tried making other shows and incase you forgot, some of them have been good and fans loved them. The L.A. Complex was a great show and I’m sure this will be too. L.A. Complex had a few Degrass actors in it…did it look like a carbon copy? No. Just because 3 Degrassi actors are on Open Heart doesn’t mean it’s a carbon copy. I think I’ve said enough.

    2. I see I see well I know what you mean. I love Degrassi also, but I don’t think them working on this show will take away from Degrassi. Sorry if i came off rude I didn’t mean to. :)

  3. The premise sounds idiotic but it will probably turn out to be a good show. Hospitals are easy places to just wander around and search through files and records and whatever ;) This sounds like degrassi is high school, la complex was 25 year olds, and this is the college version. I’m surprised that teennick is actually going to air it rather than a canada only show.

  4. I’m excited for this! I wonder when it will air. I’ve never been a fan of any new shows on teennick other than degrassi, but this could be an exception.

  6. I’m personally excited about this! As a fan of medical series, I’m really ready for a teen-based one. Yeah, the adults are exciting, but I don’t always relate to the adults. I want to see hospital life through a teen’s eyes. I’m looking forward to this. :D
