CLARE PLOT REVIEW: Degrassi delivered a brief, yet powerful plot with Clare’s cancer earlier in season 13. With her cancer in remission fans would assume things would go back to business as usual for Ms. Edwards, but that’s not the case in You Oughta Know. As she prepares for a meeting with the editor of a big magazine, Clare begins to suffer unusual bouts of memory loss. Clare struggles through the interview, forgetting her idea for an article, but eventually pitches an idea to interview Zoë. As Clare’s article about Zoë falls through upon learning Zoë lying about everything during the interview, Clare fabricates an article about Zoë.
A sudden lapse in memory here and there add up to a big problem that has Clare worrying about whether or not she’ll get into Columbia. We all know Degrassi has tackled cancer storylines before, but Clare’s takes it even further, examining what could be either her cancer returning (Clare’s fear) or sides effects caused by her cancer treatment.
“Cancer ruined everything,” Clare said to Eli during their skype call. Clare isn’t a character who is easily defeated, especially when it comes to her goals. It’s weird watching someone who’s confident and capable struggle through the task of handling an interview and writing an article, things she could do in her sleep. An added layer involves her long-distance relationship with Eli. While Eli‘s words are comforting, Clare can’t help but silently be bothered by the female talking to Eli in the background. The fact that Eli refers to the girl, Lenore, as his friend instead of telling Clare they’re roommates suggests it’ll come back to haunt Eclare in the future. But for now, we’re gripped by the story of a girl who feels as if her future, something that seemed like such a sure thing months ago, is now falling apart.

TRISTAN/MILES PLOT REVIEW: As Tristan and Miles tryout for the basketball team, Tristan hopes to become closer to Miles. While at a party at Miles’ house, the two find out they made the basketball team, but Miles is upset because his father will be disappointed Miles isn’t a starter. Miles wants to start taking steroids, which initially worries Tristan. However, Tristan comes through and hooks Miles up with some.
While some plots in season 13 seem to be moving at pace of a snail, this one feels as if it’s moving a bit too fast. It’s off-putting that Tristan suddenly has an interest in basketball, let alone he’s athletically skilled enough to actually make the team. At least the show took the time to throw in a line where Maya mock’s Tristan for playing basketball, so they indeed acknowledge that it’s silly.
The gem in this plot is of course Miles’ determination to be a starter on the team. Twice in this episode Miles mentions that anything short of being a starter on the basketball team would be a disappointment to his father. Degrassi has hinted before that Miles and his father have a tumultuous relationship, and it’s easily one of the storylines fans want to see most in season 13. The issue in You Oughta Know is that at the moment it’s unclear which way this plot is headed. While we want to see Miles’ relationship with his dad, this plot leans heavily toward Tristan’s perspective, right down to Tristan giving Miles so-called steroids (it’s hard to believe Tristan’s giving Miles anything other than a placebo). Even if it’s true that Tristan just wants a close friendship with Miles, Tristan’s borderline out-of-character behavior he uses to secure relationships with certain people is kind of tiresome.

IMOGEN PLOT REVIEW: Imogen creates a club called Degrassi TV and hosts auditions for on-air personalities. After combing through dozens of bad auditions (including Winston’s), Becky shows up and nails hers. However, Imogen acts somewhat cold afterward and tells Drew that Becky isn’t a good fit. Imogen tells Becky that she’s chosen Winston to be Degrassi TV’s anchor, insisting that the decision has nothing to do with what happened over the summer.
Imogen in general is a character I wish we’d see more of. She’s a unique character, but what I enjoy most is seeing how she interacts in stressful situations. When presented with emotional conflict she shuts down. She does so again in this episode, making up any and every excuse to avoid Becky. Imogen’s clearly feeling guilty about kissing Adam and doesn’t know how to behave around Becky now. Outside of interacting with Drew, Imogen really has no relationship with anyone at Degrassi. Becky seems to be floating around in no man’s land as well. While I’m eager to see the climax in which Imogen tells Becky about kissing Adam, I’m also interested in what this duo could bring to the show if they form a bond.

My Thoughts Before This Episode Aired…
Degrassi returns tonight for the third episode of 13B, a block that has spent the first two episodes building up the block’s major plots (at least I’m hoping we’ll see some climaxes during this block).
I don’t know about you, but even as someone who has no intention of ever up and quitting this show, I find myself at a point where my interest in Degrassi waning. This is one of those feelings I haven’t had since back during the season 8 days, and even then it wasn’t this bad because I wasn’t able to watch the show live like I am now.
There have been a few good things to come from season 13, but a majority of this season has been the show dragging along, beating us over the head with plots that are average at best. I’ve given B’s to every plot in 13B so far, but it’s more a product of the plots by default being better than what we had to endure in 13A. For what they are they’ve been good, but as fans we should be demanding great.
Great seems to be something that isn’t being accomplished with consistency on Degrassi when they’re airing only one 30-minute episode a week. Since the show rebranded itself in season 10, I’ve consistently complained about how the show feels “off” when not aired in the telenovela format, the only exception of course being the fantastic block that was 12C. It doesn’t matter if they’ve slapped a song title onto all forty 30-minute episodes in season 13, I feel like the story arcs (which are longer and more complex than ever) aren’t fitting properly into this tiny-ass broadcast format. I’d gladly take twenty hour-long episodes as opposed to forty 30-minute ones that make TV watching feel as if we’re sitting in stop-and-go traffic.
There’s a question that’s been stuck in my head: after an episode airs, do you feel excited to see the next week’s episode? For me it’s been “No” a lot this season. I come back because I’m a creature of habit. I feel like there could be a lot of good stuff on the horizon on Degrassi, but it’s asking a lot to patiently wait for it when there’s so many TV options out there on a Thursday night.
Tonight, Tristan and Miles get mixed up in steroids, while Clare may try to start a friendship with Zoë. A little birdie somewhere also happened to mention that if you haven’t watched Eli’s first webisode, you might wanna do so before tuning into tonight’s episode. I’ll post my review of You Oughta Know tonight.

I have a feeling someone is keeping quite about Eli’s new roomie.. I can’t wait for this EP.. Im kind of scared of whats to come with Clare & Zoe. Also Miles and steroids. And whats the 3rd plot.

According to Degrassi Wiki the the 3rd plot is Winston. I know the Wiki is not the most realible source with info, but it may explain the scene with Winston and Clare.

I could not agree more, Kary. The telenovela format was so much more satisfying to me. I will still dutifully watch Degrassi until the end of time, but I am also feeling the “blahs” right now about it all.

If I’m being completely honest, I don’t even watch Degrassi when it premieres anymore. I usually just record it and watch it later on. I have been waiting for something exciting to occur and it just hasn’t. I was watching the Drake-themed marathon TeenNick was airing and even the season 7 episodes were more interesting. There’s a tone of maturity missing from the show. Instead of high school students, I feel like we’re watching middle school students. It just doesn’t have that maturity that the older seasons had. 12C started to have that maturity. I don’t know what happened along the way, but from 12C to 13A the writer’s lost track. There needs to be a more mature level of storytelling and acting.
I really feel like TeenNick is dragging Degrassi down. That may just be me, but this show feels like it’s aimed at teenie boppers and not teens. It all just feels too bright, if that makes sense. I want the storylines to fit the mold of high school. Maya and Zoe are fighting over Miles like little pre-teen bimbos. Ashley and Manny’s love triangle with Craig was phenomenal in a sense, compared to Maya/Zoe/Miles. The big issue here is that a lot that’s going on seems to be relationship based. Yes, relationships are a HUGE part of being in high school – but the writer’s are dwelling on them WAY too much.
We need more storylines not being wrapped around a relationship. Like Craig’s abuse storyline or Toby’s body issues storyline. I want something with more depth to it. Something that isn’t solved in an episode or three. I want a little more risque material. The Eli webisodes are actually pretty mature. I think the show needs a little more of that. A little more maturity. I will still watch Degrassi, but I am not nearly as excited about it as I used to be.

I adore the show but I haven’t been this uninterested ever. As of right now the only thing I’m excited about is the change in Zig and what’s to come for him.

mannn this season of degrassi isnt completly perfect, but neither is any other season. i think this season there doing very well and i love it! i love miles and zoe additions! there amazingg! and im verrry hype to see tonights episode! this gonna be the ep tht clare likes drew! thats exciting! and wats even MORE exciting is that were not even sure thts gonna happen yet bcuz the commercial didnt even ruin the surprise!!! dopee

I agree with you, Kary. This season of Degrassi so far has been a letdown compared to the previous one but you know what they say “What comes up, must come down.” This season has spent way too much time setting up plots to the point where their come-down will (probably) be more satisfying than their build-up. Whatever happened to actually ACCOMPLISHING something in an episode, especially when it’s centered around high school students. Speaking of Season 8, this season is also playing out like Jane’s molestation story line, such that it’s building up at a slow pace. Even though I appreciate some things that happened this season such as Clare’s cancer story line, Young Forever, and Zig’s change, which I’ll get to later, it still doesn’t make up for the nonsense that the Miles/Maya and Alli/Leo plots brought during the summer block. Hopefully both of those plots will climax and Degrassi will move on to better storylines, but from what I’ve seen that’s easier said than done.
Someone mentioned in the comment section how Degrassi needs to have more maturity and I couldn’t agree more. A sign of maturity right now is Zig Novak’s change of character but even so, he’s the only focused character in this block that I’m excited for; given that his setup in one episode was actually better than the dragged-out setup of the Maya/Zoe feud that has lasted for 10 episodes. I’ll say this once and I’ll say it again: Paris was a mistake. Whoever the Degrassi writer was that came up with that idea should consider another job because the Paris plot may have tainted this season, and the show to an extent. Paris filled up a portion of the season that could have been dedicated to other plots or better yet, like Kary said in the 13A Review blog post, have the summer scene take place at the Degrassi camp. I can only hope that 13B doesn’t have the same consistency issue that 13A had.
As far as tonight’s episode goes, it’s a mixed bag for me. I’m interested in seeing Miles wanting steroids for basketball but there’s some things that are throwing me off. Since when did Tristan suddenly become interested in playing basketball? I would have thought that he would be in the Fall drama play but then again Tristan’s occasional OOC has been an issue since the start of this season. Also, in the promo Maya says to Tristan how she thought that he didn’t like Miles anymore which made me roll my eyes in disgust. Please writers just let this love triangle/square/pentagon thing go. For Clare’s plot, it’s the same thing. Her plot might be compelling seeing how she has to communicate with Zoe for an article she’s doing. But the thing that’s making me cringe is her having feelings for Drew which the writers should be ashamed of for even going down that route. I understand that in the recent webisode Eli might cheat on Clare and she’ll find out about it but her liking Drew makes no sense at all. When Alli said in the promo “Where is Clare Edwards and what have you done with her?” I thought the same thing about Degrassi compared to how consistently great the show was last season. As for the third plot, which I’m guessing is centered on Winston, it’ll be the comic relief of this episode seeing how he’s been bringing awkward humor during this season. Here’s hoping we get to see more of his character than him making a brief appearance with Miles.
In general, I hope that Season 13 of Degrassi improves in quality and has more plot advancements before it ends up in Season 8 territory.

You hit it right on the head. I couldn’t have said it better myself. This season HAS had bright spots, but they have been outnumbered by what I’ve considered blunders on the writers’ parts. I am left both curious and disappointed looking forward to the next episodes.
You’re right, Tristan suddenly becoming athletic and interested in sports seems not only rushed, but also inconsistent considering his history. I get that he wants male friends, but he seems just plain still obsessed with Miles, continuing on a uninteresting love square/pentagram like you said with him, Miles, Maya, possibly Zig, and Zoe. Its kind of sad to see Olivia Scriven, who seems to be a talented actress, having her air time wasted on this situation, which has dragged on since the first episode of Season 13. Miles alluding to his father and their relationship will be an interesting path to travel down as a viewer if the producers pursue it. It might make one of the more noteworthy storylines for this season if they do, adding more depth to his character and being relatable to teens. And Zig’s entry into this should be interesting.
As far as Clare goes, I’m going to guess that her memory/lack of concentration has to do with a possible cancer relapse, which could be set up for devastating effect if it is coupled with a imminent break up with Eli. Aislinn Paul’s acting is usually on point, and it appears in the webisodes that perhaps that is where the writers are heading with those two. Then again, I could be completely wrong. As far Clare and Drew, I hope that the writers/producers wouldn’t be THAT foolish and go there. In my own opinion, Drianca is one of the most durable couples that this show has had since Season 8 as far as I can remember. They’ve been through hell and back, and managed to survive long enough to “make it through”, figuratively at least. You could make the case for EClare as well I guess, but I just have a feeling that if the writers have been willing to put them on the chopping block as often as they have, that it may actually happen this time. Its the end of each character’s stint on the show, and Munro was only brought on this season as a background character to supplement Aislinn, so perhaps they wanted to show her alone to end her senior year out.
You’re right Matthew, this season could end up like Season 8, but at least its seeming to improve, ever so painstakingly slowly. The 13A was largely a stumble, with Clare’s cancer story being the anchor for the whole summer block. Adam’s death and its immediate fallout lent it shock effect, but the Paris storyline seemed to overshadow these bright spots with its absurdity. To me, 13B is so far just plain average. The plots seem to be just kind of slowly materializing instead of developing by leaps and bounds like other seasons, for better or worse. At least it seems that the ship has corrected course, but now it is just limping along instead of “full steam ahead”. Hopefully this will change.

Guess I’m not the only one after all. It’s no secret that DeGrassi struggles when they lack signature actors. Right now, after only a handful of episodes, I give the nod to Olivia Scriven, she’s got talent and she’s shown it on many occasions in her short DeGrassi career. But really, after her, there’s a bunch of mediocrity. There’s some signs of life in the rest of the cast, but you have to figure that the majority of them will be departing after this year. When the writing isn’t stellar, a show needs outstanding actors to bridge the gap. Right now, they’re in trouble in both areas.
I’ve been thinking for a while that DeGrassi is a show in transition, one that’s trying to find their identity. Sure, everybody knows DeGrassi, everybody knows each episode contains 3 story lines, Everyone knows the characters and the formulas employed to put an episode on the air. It’s just getting tired. There is no compelling reason to tune in. You could basically write the stories yourself. I think the producers know that and they’re trying to break tradition and get some excitement back into the actual production.
It’s great that they utilize social media so well. They’ve got the back end of the cast covered. They do everything they can to involve the audience and make them feel as a part of the DeGrassi community. All that’s good, now they just need to make the show something people look forward to watching,
I agree that DeGrassi made a great move when they went to the telenovela summer format. It worked. Episodes didn’t need to be perfect as you had another one to watch tomorrow. Then this past summer they reverted back and the product wasn’t that good, plus there were only 8 of them. Fans didn’t get either quality or quantity. This is carrying over to fall.
I haven’t looked at the numbers. I’d really like to see what their live +3 figures are. Who’s watching Thursday night and who’s DVR’ing it to watch over the weekend. There must be some reason they’ve got it in that time slot, I’d love to know what it is. OK, I know at this point I’m writing to myself! Toodles!

Season 7>>Season 13. Yes, Season 7 had a good deal of mailing-it-in, lets wrap-it-up performances…(Palex and JimAsh 2.0 spring to mind)…But at least that season had a little maturity. As someone said, it feels like this is a group of middle-schoolers. Maybe this Season being “like Season 8” will be acceptable…Just a long way to go before watching this pays off…Just like Season 8 eventually did.

I feel like I’m the only person who actually liked Season 8. I thought it was better than Season 7 as a whole. nothing really happened in 8 until towards the tail end of it, but I felt like it was more consistent than 7.
7 started out great, but just fell off after about 8 episodes. literally the only good things about that season were the Darcy and Spinner storylines.
that being said, I feel like season 13 is the worst season since 7 so far, and I really hope it improves, or it might end up being their last at this rate.

Overall, I thought this episode was decent but it really was the A Plot and C Plot that did well in this episode. While these two plots were in set-up mode, they still gave promise to how they play out in next week’s episode.

I feel that, as a weekly, the series is suffering, but the season will look better when marathoned because most plots don’t have final beginning and ending lines by the episodes anymore. Plots start, vanish, reappear, and end in unconventional ways which is better for the feeling of a real school with real people, but as a TV show you just can’t really manage the screen time needed in a half hour format.
Even though I have a lot of issues, I am for the most part still more invested than S7/S8. Season 7 was a massive trainwreck of missed chances and misused cast, Season 8 suffered from being in the aftermath of Season 7 having to clean up the hole left behind by finally ‘ending’ the first attempt at college plots. …and then falling right back into that mess with a new set of college plots, although at a much smaller scale.
Spinner in S7 was great, as was Darcy, but when the most enjoyable aspect of the season is Mia suffering because the writers had started pushing Nina Dobrev at such ridiculous levels so you root for Holly J? Yeah… you got issues.

I hate to say this but Eli & Clare’s webchat felt so detached, unfeeling and kind of cold.. Its like oh hey Clare long time no see friend. BTW I can understand why Eli didn’t tell Clare about Lenore being his roomie.. Can you imagine what would be going through Clare’s head. This is why Eli didn’t tell her.
Im still very iffy with Zoe.. Im enjoying the friendship between Clare & Drew and finally doing a story of the aftermath of Chemo.. I think a lot of fans don’t realize that Chemo does serious damage/kills the good cells and bad cells in the body and it takes a long time for those new healthy cells to regenerate. This is why doctors what you to be stress free to stay healthy.

Question: Quick everyone, how many episodes are in the fall block?
Answer: Not enough judging by the pace they’re moving!
Actually, this wasn’t a bad episode. In fact, it would have been a great Tuesday night episode in a 4 nite a week summer block. Problem is, we have to wait a week for this whole mess to come to a head. At that point, what are we, half way through this block?
If we weren’t armed with the info that the series would be broken into 3 segments, it might be alright. But we know that what they are working on now is what we get for this block. Guess what? Looking at it like that, it’s kind of lame.
Again we are looking at a show that’s trying to decide what it is going to do. In the process, it’s doing a pretty good job of treading water. In TV, if you don’t move forward, you drown.
Hey, I’m going to watch regardless, I’m invested in this show, good, bad, or indifferent. But I sure would like to see it come up with a plan and move forward. This isn’t very good TV. I don’t buy into this comparing seasons. You really can’t. Apparently there was a new writer for last night’s episode. Pretty good start, I wonder if he was an addition or a replacement?

After thinking about it a bit, I think you’re right on something. This episode in the middle of a weekly telenovela format would seem much better than having to stand by itself on a Friday, with nothing until a full week later to supplement it or grow from it. I wasn’t aware that there was a new writer for this episode. If that is that case, then that may change my opinion for this episode a bit. If this was his/her first actual episode, then this is a pretty solid opening performance, not great, but not terrible either. That would be interesting to find out. Thanks for the information!

Exactly. These episodes would be fine if they were moving along swiftly as part of a telenovela. I felt like the last episode wasn’t bad really, but when it’s the only episode for the whole week, it should be a whole lot better than “not bad” or “ok”.

One thing stands out to me. It’s easy to see that the production values have been raised since they are only airing 1 episode per week. I’d be willing to bet that their costs have risen since returning to this format. The telenovela format saved them some bucks even tho it was more difficult for the cast and crew. But, these episodes, even though they look better don’t cut it from the viewer standpoint. If they did, we wouldn’t be constantly comparing them to the old summer format.
MTV Canada, being a new player in all of this probably hasn’t started to flex their muscles with the show yet. Be interesting to see what happens when they do…

I just want to say I COMPLETELY agree with everyone’s feelings about this show starting to feel too childish. Not to point fingers, but I honestly believe that Tristan is causing the bulk of these bad feelings. His character in my opinion is inconsistent, unconvincing, and toxic to the rest of the show right now. Maya and Zoë made it worse with their bickering, and Winston is just NOT amusing to me at all. He feels like the writers are trying way too hard to make him the comic relief nut.
On top of this all, I agree with what someone said earlier about TeenNick dragging the show down. It’s all in the way the show is being marketed — it seems as though they’ve done a complete reassessment of the show’s target audience. They’re prioritizing all their efforts on the age 11-15 crowd, while completely ignoring the 16+. Ultimately, I think they made this decision because they saw more potential in the 16+ crowd, but I think the results of this season so far will help them realize their errors.
Essentially, I think TeenNick has done a miserable job analyzing the viewer data, resulting in them making a poor call on the target marketing. But that’s just from a business perspective of things. :/

Just finished watching the episode on teennick.com and in my opinion the only really interesting parts of the episodes were the scenes Winston was in. I think he is an excellent secondary character and it was nice seeing him interact with Clare, Drew, and Imogen, and not being around Miles.

Man, this show lately… It’s bad.
Sometimes I kinda like Tristan, and sometimes I kinda hate Tristan. However, I don’t know why people have such a big issue with Tristan acting “out of character” at times. He’s consistently inconsistent. Some people are like that. Some call those people “posers.” But Tristan’s random randomness makes sense to me. We have seen time and time again that he is not really comfortable with who he is. He has a lot of insecurities and is kind of desperate for acceptance and friendship. That can often cause people to do things that are “out of character.” Sometimes you can handle just being yourself, but sometimes the loneliness is too much to handle so you do something drastic. Imogen has been a wildly inconsistent character and that has made little sense to me. She just seems to do it on a whim. “I am a trendy obsessive stalker girl… Oo, I don’t like it when other people are obsessive and stalkery, though…I might be a lesbian and stop being so quirky…Maybe now I will not be a lesbian, but regain my quirkiness and dress like a nerdy boy…” I don’t get Imogen, but no one seems to complain about her.
I know Clare’s suddenly not thinking too well and all, but how could she ever think that a star of a teen soap would be like, “Sure, I’ll totally tell you about how everyone hates me so that you can tell the world that I am an unlikeable loser in real life. That sounds good.” And won’t just tell magazine editor lady that she’s sick. This feels like a repeat of when Holly J was really sick and wouldn’t just admit it. But this is worse, because Holly J didn’t know her kidneys were failing yet. Clare knows that she was very recently being treated for cancer. She could mention that to magazine editor lady. I don’t like how Degrassi often portrays the world as always being a cold, hard place where you only ever have one chance. Most of the time, if you’re honest and have a good reason for being kind of out of it- like maybe if you just recovered from CANCER- people will give you another chance when you’re feeling better. They don’t look at you as some pathetic weakling because you fell gravely ill. The magazine will continue to need articles later. Magazine editor lady will not look at your next pitch and go, “Oooh, jeeez, it’s the cancer girl…not giving HER another shot, no way…”

Plus being a journalist is a dog eat dog world and hardly ever someone get a second chance even it she an intern or student intern. They will see her as immature and sloppy. Also this can ruin her chances at Columbia. If she told them about he cancer in the first place they would have postponed for another time or given her something else. I think Clare is going to ruin herself because she doesn’t know how to relax. She needs to get rid of a big stress in her life and I hate to say it but its her long distance relationship. That alone can put a toll on her. She need to slow down to be healthy.

Imogen, Tristan, and Winston all try too hard, in their own way. Tristan tries too hard to be whatever the people around him want him to be. Imogen tries to be memorable, which in turn makes her actions more eccentric and larger than life. And Winston just tries too hard, full stop.
In both the Clare and Holly J plots (and they are quite similar, but that is as much the characters are similar as anything) the girls refuse to be brought down by anything. Holly J knew something was wrong, but wasn’t going to cry about being a little sick. Clare, similarly, wasn’t going to just become a damsel blaming everything on cancer. Pride and ego are both big parts of Clare and Holly J’s plots, and neither is very good at accepting their own shortcomings.

Likely Clare would find herself in a state of denial. After all she went through and after losing Adam in the process, the last thing she wants to think about is the cancer returning or having bad side effects from the chemo. In her mind, acknowledging the issue instead of ignoring or minimizing is her way of coping and rationalizing because not many people can face those fears even with support. It’s realistic, logical, and understanding that Clare not admitting to just going through chemo because she doesn’t know how the editor will react. Not everyone is going to be sympathetic to your plight even if it’s not your fault and could reason “well there’s plenty of talented healthy people out there that will make the deadline with something passable”. Running a magazine company is a business and sometimes you can’t get second chances when there are other people craving for that opportunity and may be more talented or dedicated than Clare. Writing is something Clare is passionate about and until there’s a brick wall (such as the cancer coming out of remission) she will keep chugging on. Heck, even when she was diagnosis it took a while for it to sink in and for her to come to gripes with everything involved. There are plenty of people that would react the way Holly J and Clare did, with or without being diagnosed with something as severe as they were, and keep ignoring what’s wrong because we don’t live in a world where people are always kind or compassionate even to the ill.

lol i’ve stopped watching. i missed the adam funeral ep and haven’t gotten caught up. judging by your end note, maybe I shouldn’t bother.
