After delivering a few episodes where one plot ends up carrying the entire episode, Degrassi gets back on track with a well-rounded entry in the diary of season 13’s summer block.  Adam’s plot continues to be strong (and shocking), but more impressive is how well the other two plots rebound.  Maya and Alli’s plot feel short, but are interesting enough to keep our attention throughout.

1306-1ADAM PLOT REVIEW: The up-and-down emotions of Adam’s plot continues as he deals with the aftermath of Becky wanting time to think over their relationship.  Adam sends Becky roses as an apology, but she sends them back to him.  Adam doesn’t want to believe that he and Becky are over, but Dallas suggests that he move on by dating Imogen.  At camp, Imogen asks Adam to go on a hiking date.  Rain ruins their plans, but the two end up making out in the back of a van before Drew walks in on them.  Adam realizes he’s not over Becky and needs to talk to her immediately, but there’s no cell signal at the campsite.  Adam takes the van drives to find cell signal so he can call Becky.  While driving he tries to send Becky a text message, and an incoming car lays on its horn.  Adam swerves out of the way of the car, but crashes into a tree.

This plot has been another great example of how the show’s writing has improved other the years. We’re fully aware that Adam’s making some dumb decisions throughout this storyline, but we can also completely understand the emotions behind what he’s doing.  When you’re mind is hyper focused on one thing, it’s incredibly difficult to get back on track.

1306-2The episode description for this plot was slightly misleading:

“Adam takes Dallas’ advice and tries juggling two girls at once.”

This gives the impression that Dallas convinces Adam to be a “player” who fools around with his side girl Imogen until Becky makes up her mind, but this clearly isn’t the case.  Adam tries to legitimately move on by making plans with Imogen, but it simply doesn’t work.

Degrassi delivers a great cliffhanger wrapped in a direct message to viewers about the dangers of texting while driving.  It also reminds us of the randomness and fragility of life as Adam’s status remains unclear.

1306-a

1306-3MAYA/TRISTAN PLOT REVIEW:  Tristan is nowhere to be found so Maya makes it her mission to find him.  With Tristan’s location in Paris unknown she enlists the help of Chewy, and rejects Miles’ offer to help.  After hours of searching Chewy demands that Maya get help from Miles.  She begrudgingly agrees, and Miles, jokingly, has her beg for his help.  While walking around the city they find Tristan.  Maya and Tristan make up and Maya also realizes that Miles might not be as bad as she thinks.

About A Girl presents a very confusing plot with various thoughts and emotions flying everywhere, but the focus is reset here in Cannonball.  Degrassi hones in on Maya’s disdain for Miles, a feeling so strong it nearly inhibits her quest to find Tristan.  Ultimately, Maya is forced to work with Miles, and upon the outcome of the situation forced to reassess her opinion of him.  She clearly wants to demonize him, but realizes something viewers have to do often with characters on this show: she understands that he’s not as bad as perceived.

Tristan’s anger toward Maya in About A Girl was understandable in a way, but over the top.  However, there’s genuine emotion in their reconciliation…one that includes the vow that they’d never let a guy come between them again.  That’s most certainly Degrassi code for “guys will definitely continue to come between them,” especially one Mr. Hollingsworth.

1306-b

************

1306-4ALLI PLOT REVIEW:  Jenna’s feeling down about Connor being repulsed by the thought of sex, so she turns to Alli for a girl’s night.  However, Alli plans the night so that it’s a double date:  it’s Alli and Leo, and Alli sets up Jenna with Leo’s friend Andre.  Jenna bails on the “girl’s night” as Andre is too creepy and touchy-feely.  Later, Alli apologizes and helps Jenna and Connor reunite so they can work out their problems.

While there’s quite a bit of up and down emotion toward the season 13 summer block, Alli’s plot has been a flatline throughout.  While we can appreciate Alli taking a more mature approach to this relationship, it’s one that contains little interest or faith that it’s something worth fans investing in.  While they exist here, the plot shifts more into the direction of Alli trying to balance multiple relationships.  She feels she must take advantage of every moment with Leo, but Jenna’s at a point where she needs Alli’s support.

Humor is injected into the plot with Leo’s over-the-top friend.  Another great thing is that all the while we see Jenna who felt genuinely hurt by Connor’s unintentionally-harsh words about sex in About A Girl.  The plot remained pretty much drama free, but smartly shifts the story so that it’s not solely relying on Alli’s romantic relationship to carry things.

  2. Theory: Adam is brain damaged like Shane McKay, because Jordan did post that photo from a few weeks ago, and the funeral is for the other driver? If we take out the photo Jordan posted, then the funeral has to be Adam’s right? But it’s Degrassi, so it’s possible the writers could further surprise us…

I’m praying that all the rumors are wrong and that Adam does not die but maybe goes into a coma because there is just too much unfinished business with his story line. But it reminds use to not text and drive.

  5. I really think TeenNick should’ve followed the episode with an itcanwait.com commercial, but that’s my $0.02.

I had actually convinced myself that it wasn’t going to be Adam who dies(?), but that Adam screwing around with Imogen was going to cause something horrible to one of the little kids (especially with Dallas making make-shift weapons to fend off bears) on his watch, and that he wouldn’t be at the funeral because he’s in temp lock-up or something. Guess I was wrong, and a texting/driving plot is really more relevant, anyway.

That was some ridiculous run-on sentence I wrote there, wasn’t it?

  6. It definitely ads a cliffhanger, but I would think that they would drag it out a bit longer. However, if they don’t, and Adam does die, it’s kind of like JT’s death: JT was juggling two women as well before he died, and Degrassi likes to refurbish various plots it looks like (which I love, because they’re actually always different in some way).

But if he does die, then it would give me the impression that Clare for-sure doesn’t die, because [that I know of] Degrassi has never had two characters die in one season.

If he lives, though, there’s going to be some major drama. :x

As for Alli’s story line, she’s bothered me a lot lately. And as for Maya, what ever happened to Zig?! Degrassi left us off at that, and he’s now nowhere to be seen. I feel like I’m the only one who remembers the way he and Maya were in the end of last season. :/

  8. I would hate for them to have 2 character deaths in a row. I remember when JT had actually died, not jsut gotten stabbed but died, it was shocking. This time, it seems too soon and a lot less gut wrenching. Don’t get me wrong, I love Adam, and would be really sad to see him go. But how could the writers put the characters through 2 deaths in a row. Not to mention clare’s condition and possible death hanging in the air as well. It’s too much.

On a light note, what was with the random nicknames tonight? A rock, and whatever Ali kept calling Jenna.

  9. I’m surprised the writers are putting another (potential) death so close to Cameron, and in the middle of Clare’s potentially fatal cancer plot line. I remember back when JT got shot, it was so shocking. I think we all expected him to be ok, no one had actually died on Degrassi before (I’m talking next gen) so it was gut wrenching and devestating. Don’t get me wrong, I love Adam and would be sad to see him go. But I think it’s too much, too soon. Not to mention having to put the character’s through another death. It would make the show way too dark.

This cliffhanger is one of the best EVER…The ending gives me chills…Just like some of the best Degrassi 2-Parters do at the end of the episode to build anticipation for the next week…No matter how this storyline plays out, Part 1’s cliffhanger is right up there with the likes of WDC, Tears Are Not Enough,, Standing in the Dark, Death or Glory, Turned Out…If you don’t know what I mean go back and watch them…Some of the best Degrassi episodes EVER, in a large part because they left you on the edge of your seat at the end.

A storyline can gain so much from a thrilling end to Part 1, like the episodes I mentioned…And on the other hand, a storyline can lose a tremendous amount of steam if it has a dull end to Part 1…Think along the lines of Lost in Love, Heart Like Mine, Hide and Seek, Why Can’t This Be Love aka Broken Promises…When aired as a 40 minute episode, as some of those originally were, it goes unnoticed…But when watching Part 1, then Part 2 later, or on a week-by-week episode airing format…It’s very obvious. If I were to rank all the two-parters by “good” and “bad” episodes…The only one I can think of that would be considered “good” despite a lousy ending to Part 1 would be Eyes Without a Face, back in Season 6. #WhereIsDarcy

The point is…Degrassi needs to do what they did tonight, and have strong endings to Part 1, so we don’t sit through a week without excitement to see Part 2.

    1. i agree with you about everything youve said, but this was Part 2 of this storyline. Degrassi is trying to tell us that every episode has gone back to single 30 minute contained storylines but it hasnt… if you pay attention the format hasnt changed from season 10 till now at all, and thats actually a good thing because it makes these A plots alot stronger in retrospect. Summertime Parts 1 and 2 – Maya
All I Wanna Do & My Own Worst Enemy – Clare
      About A Girl & Cannonball – Adam
These episodes were all 2 parters, just with seperate titles. Honey will be Part 1 of a 2 parter that will conclude with Forever Young. These episodes were all still written as Parts 1 and 2

      1. Heres the basic episode descriptions for each episode to help see where im coming from:
        “Summertime: Part 1 and 2”
Maya can’t stand the thought of losing her bestfriend Tristan to the snobby Zoe, so she goes against her parents curfew to make sure that doesn’t happen. When consequences take affect and her parents band Maya from a summer trip to Paris, she hangs with the troubled Miles to prove a point, only to realize her home life is much more fortunate than his.
“All I Wanna Do: Part 1”
Clare’s cancer diagnosis sets in when her hair starts to fall out. She decides to shave it off to keep in control, but is she losing hope?
“My Own Worst Enemy: Part 2”
After an MRI convinces Clare that her cancer is spreading, she has lost faith and decides to live life to the fullest – hope for the best but expect the worst, right?
        “About A Girl: Part 1”
Adam fears Becky is being taken away from him by a fellow lifegaurd, and becomes obsessed with keeping tabs on her through his phone.
        “Cannonball: Part 2”
Trying to give Becky her space like she asked, Adam becomes more and more distracted by his phone… maybe a little too distracted.

  13. i think this is obviously the worst summer season of degrassi ever & probably the worst stretch in the show period. the cancer has been done before at least twice on degrassi, the alli dating part has been done constantly & is boring, we know maya is going to be the new kids gf eventually but thats the most interesting part of the whole summer. and of course when adam gets in the car to go be deceptive of course he gets in a car wreck.

im really tired of claire ali & adam on this show. because of adam’s sexual situation he is always the ‘sensible adult character’ who has constantly chided his mom or other adults on the show which would either never happen in real life or if it did the mom would tell him to dont butt in or just disregard anything he says anyway since hes like 14 and the adults are 30-40+ people that age do not listen an ounce to what a 14 year old says.

if hes not the sensible adult its him being basically the victim in having to deal with his sexual issue. the only time he does something bad is because he’s “in love” & acting impetuously. they will only make a character who has an lgbt issue be a sympathetic character who always has his or her heart in the right place and is morally superior to everyone else.

it doesnt seem like he would die just out of the blue from a car crash, there was no buildup over a season(s) like cam or rick or whoever else. jt died suddenly but there was tension amongst the schools building up over a season or more, plus the fight that didnt happen earlier in the day or day before. i hope adam dies because it would at least be interesting. theres no sense of tension this summer at all, aside from claire who looks like butterbean & is really disturbing, we know she isnt going to die, and its basically just like we’re watching this field trip their on with nothing menacing or exciting happening. i hope the fall season really amps that up because it definitely needs it. plus the hottest girl on the show tori is gone.

Omg, this episode… Tristan is so stupid, like the whole situation is stupid. When HE kissed miles he was just so thirsty for love that he thought it could really mean something, when Miles was probably just being nice and didn’t really act negatively for that reason. Just because he didn’t act negatively to the kiss doesn’t mean that he’s gay, bi, or anything. And then he told Maya that they both kissed, making it seem like it was mutual, so Maya started hating him when miles started kissing that zoe girl. Miles didn’t deserve any of that shit, and Tristan getting mad at Maya for that and making her feel bad was so stupid. She should have just dropped his overly dramatic ass and went with Miles right then, which we all know is going to happen eventually. Even though they made up in this episode, Tristan is still annoying and I really hope he changes or leaves.

Adam is stupid first of all for sending that message when he thought becky was cheating on him or whatever, and then he was stupid again in this episode for not listening to drew and just waiting. And the crash was so predictable, once he grabbed the keys I just knew it was happening. I don’t even really care if Adam gets killed off, my interest for him peaked when he debuted, and now there’s nothing interesting about him honestly.

I’M SO FUCKING TIRED OF ALLI’S PLOT. LIKE WTF. Yes the Jenna and Connor part helped a little, but this plot is like going no where like she’s just with this guy, and shes’ always with a guy, and it’s going to end bad just like it always does.

    1. I’m also in favor of the brain damage/paralysis storyline, or even a coma. I honestly feel like the closeness of this incident to Cam’s death is REASON ENOUGH for why Adam’s death would make zero sense, from a writing standpoint. Like pocksuppet said, they literally just dealt with grieving plots and a death — the impact and significance of this one is going to be severely lessened if it happens this soon.

  23. I do think a brain damage plot would be fascinating for this show, and I’m sure Jordy would be able to handle it, but I believe everyone saying that Adam isn’t going to die is just in denial, like they were about Cam’s death when the signs were so blatantly obvious. :/

It may not make a lot of sense, but if Jordan needs to leave the show, then the writers have to do something to write her off. Same thing happened with Ryan Cooley. That’s the thing about death – it sometimes gets you when you least expect it. It is kind of sucky that Adam, a much beloved character on the show, is going out frantically texting his girlfriend, the first girl who fully accepted him (but put him through hell to do it) when she’s off hanging around guys in their bathing suits. That’s not exactly the way I want to remember Adam, because I never did like Becky and still don’t, but it’s like you can choose when you’re going to die (well, for the most part).

Of course, I could be wrong and Adam won’t be dying, but I don’t think I am. The upcoming plots for Drew and Becky “dealing with tragedy” and the shots of the funeral scene and the fact that Jordy said she would be moving on to other projects are all pretty clear indicators.

The Adam story line provided the drama and a good message about the dangers of texting and driving. And true to character, he remained faithful to Becky.

It was nice to get a story from Jenna’s perspective, and Jessica Tyler was pretty funny in the restaurant scene.

I think the writers were giving us some amusing symbolism when Maya and Tristan stuck Miles in the pillory.

We’ll probably see him trapped between these two again.

When your getting 4 a week, the audience is a lot more forgiving. Now, I know that for me anyway, I expect the quality to be good every week, it’s just not happening. Plus, were coming up on a break, so most of this has to be wrapped up in just a few installments. I doubt we’re going to be thrilled with the results. We’ll see, I guess…

    1. I know what you mean about the summer novella format. I always thought that format kept the action coming and made viewers stay tuned so that they wouldn’t miss anything. I agree, the novella style tends to lend forgiveness to weak episodes since there are so many crammed into a small time frame. I would imagine that they will return to the novella format at some point this season, it was just plain too successful for them to completely discard.

  28. I think I can safely say that this was the strongest episode thus far, performance-wise. Cannonball to me seemed like it was a throwback to the solid acting we saw through the majority of Season 12. All three plots could make a viewer interested to varying degrees. Well done Degrassi writers, you have successfully righted the ship temporarily. Let’s hope that they can keep it up.

I know that to many people, including myself, this summer block has been a letdown. In fairness to the producers and writers, they have just completed a hugely successful Season 12, and I think the bar was set a bit too high for them coming into the earliest part of Season 13. I think all of us, including myself again, expected the quality to stay consistent without realizing that not all of their new characters or plots are going to wow us every time.

    A Plot:
Adam’s plot has been realistic in relation to teen drama that is both believable and relatable. He is too preoccupied with his Becky dilemma to make wise decisions and unfortunately ended up causing his accident. Degrassi hasn’t had a cliffhanger to heighten the viewers’ sense of urgency this year yet, and although its early, they’ve done a great job drawing everyone to eagerly wait for next Thursday to see this unfold. Adam’s storyline thus far has been very good, and I can’t wait to see what is next. I have a bad feeling for the character’s future, given the funeral pics and the fact that Adam wasn’t seen AT ALL in the C Block of Season 12 leading into this particular summer break. Also, I hope that this sends a clear message to teens that texting and driving don’t mix. A PSA about texting may have been appropriate, but I think the message from this episode was loud ‘n clear.

    B Plot:
Lyle did a much better job this episode in selling Tristan’s emotions and feelings compared to his behavior in a couple of the previous ones. While his attitude and mannerisms may have seemed over the top before, he did a great job here at showing the pain he felt towards his closest friend. Maya seemed to come full circle in this episode, going from despising Miles to grudgingly admitting that he is not “as bad” as he seems. Also, I still foresee a bit of a love triangle eventually this fall between Miles/Zig/Maya once the school year is back in full swing. My reasoning behind this guess is because Maya has made very coy comments about how she could never go out with a guy like Miles, but yet there is a hint of an underlying connection between them. This plot partially redeemed itself from last week, I can only hope it builds on it going into next week with the eventual Maya/Zoe showdown.

    C Plot:
I think Alli’s plot may have finally shown some sign of life. It kept me marginally interested at first, partially because Alli’s “take it slow” approach has tended to be uneventful, even though it is nice to see that the writers have allowed her character to mature in her final season. Intertwining Jenna and Connor into it made this plot work well, and the double date with Andre was awesome to watch her disgusted reactions to each of his advances. The dynamic of Jenna being patient enough with a still socially struggling Connor has intrigued me, and keeping them in tandem going into the school year has me eager to see where that will take them. To be perfectly honest, I think once Alli is back at Degrassi with Clare nearby, her plots will come across much better to viewers. There’s always been good chemistry onscreen with Aislinn and Melinda, making them stronger actors and enhancing their characters, so I look forward to the two of them being reunited. I honestly think that the producers’ and writers’ overall theme of Alli’s Paris plot has been to exhibit that she is basically alone with only Jonnor and a bunch of Grade Ten students on a trip across the world while her best friend is struggling through cancer treatment, making her out of touch with everything else going on in the Degrassi world.

I was debating even watching this episode because I wasn’t sure if Clare’s story was part of it, since there have been too many coincidences between it and my dad’s current struggle with cancer. However, it didn’t disappoint in the drama dept. One of the main reasons I’ve watched Degrassi so long is because it tries to hit home some point each week, some are more minute than others, but then you get some like this with the texting and driving. Adam has been one of my favorite characters, and to be honest, I think he and Becky could definitely be an awesome couple. His character has made me wonder, should transgenders be grouped in LGBT? The reason I think not is that the others all are, to me, more about your mind only, where as being transgender has so much more to it. Anyways, I hope, if the Degrassi writers are going to kill off Adam, that maybe they will show Becky relying on her Christianity to get through it, since the writers have never done a good job with that topic. I personally think they could have done a heck of a job with Clare or Darcy, but maybe through Becky’s character they can do it.

The other two plots were not bad, but I wasn’t so into them. I think the Jenna/Connor plot has been a little better to me than anything, since, like Connor, I am the same way about being in a relationship. I hope the writers keep them going, and hopefully once the summer stuff is over and they are back at Degrassi, Alli’s role will be more with Clare than anything. The Maya/Tristan plot just bugs me, but to a point he is one character that has definitely changed for the worse. Again, maybe once the whole Paris thing is over, it will get better.

Also, I read through the comments, and saw at least a few about how it is too close to have a character die again, and that it may decrease the shock if Clare and Adam were both to be killed off, but I think that’s exactly why the writers may do it. I don’t want to see it happen, but, it’s Degrassi, so you never know; maybe, like the theme song says, whatever it takes, we can make it through.

  31. I hope Adam doesn’t die but at the same time I love the whole texting can wait message they’re portraying in this episode, being that it’s such an important one. On a lighter note, Chewy is just amazing. Loving his character.

  32. Well, this explains Adam’s terrible hair. Sucks to lose the only FTM character on TV (and, up until this bland “wah wah my girlfriend might be cheating” plot arc, the most interesting character on Degrassi) but at least he died being a stupid teenager instead of getting his skull smashed in by bigoted thugs.

    RIP Adam.

  33. Even though the signs are so obvious, I’m hoping either the funeral scene was for something else or they filmed it to scare us; I know shows sometimes film extra scenes so that plots aren’t leaked. Even though I’m pretty sure he’s gonna die, he’s almost died before. But at the same time to people asking why he would be involved with other plots and love triangles, his life doesn’t just stop because he’s gonna die, his character isn’t aware of whats going to happen in the future and his life goes on. It’s realistic and it definitely can give Imogen and Becky an interesting storyline for the second block of the season. Along with Clare and Eli, they’ll both be devastated, especially since Eli lost Julia and found Cam’s body. I feel like he could snap or something. Also, it’s not too soon for another character to die because it’s realistic; death happens all the time and you don’t expect it. But I’m still hoping for my theory that it’s not a real scene and that nobody dies this season, unless its Zoe or Leo, they annoy me.

  35. As most people have been saying, Adam didn’t make it through his surgery. And the ending of the episode was left without dialogue and just “shocking” music. Drew’s reactions may have seemed a bit over the top, but they were real. The ugliness of sorrow he displayed. It did enough to break my heart.. I really wish they hadn’t killed him off (That sounds so harsh :x) Adding in the fact that Cam just died about 6 months ago. But, Degrassi as we’ve seen before, likes to commit to reality, and can’t sugarcoat it. So, since Degrassi likes to go by the rules of life, they showed us that life is unexpected. And death can come in a blink of an eye. As of right now, it feels like Adams story is unfinished. And I wish he was able to go out in a more meaningful way. Or done more in his Degrassi life. So, I suppose that’s what the upcoming episode is for. I know most people are wondering how Becky will cope, but right now I’m being a bit biter towards her.. `^` I know she isn’t the cause of the death. Adam is the cause. But I don’t want to exactly feel entirely bad for her right now. Nonetheless, Adam really will be missed. And Jordan will be missed for her role as the first transgender teenager character ever on television. R.I.P. Adam, and I hope you’ve earned your wings.^-^

Killed off Adam, broken up Fimogen, and reunited Eclare (the poster couple for for dysfunctionally doomed unheathy relationships). Wonder how else Degrassi can screw up their show? Oh, I know! Let’s have give the unbearably annoying Clare and her almost as annoying BFF Ally (Ali, whatever) more screen time! There that should do it. At least the insufferable Eli’s gone.

  37. Adam is a girl. Whether she wanted to be or not. I’m sorry, but she drove me crazy. She went and confused a person who had a moral code and just made the show weird. No one should ever compare her to JT. JT was an amazing character.
