About A Girl is an episode that leaves me all over the place in terms of quality. The meat of the episode is pretty good because it’s pretty simple: Adam is paranoid that his girlfriend is cheating on him, and instead of asking her about it (because that would be too obvious) he does something stupid. From there things get weird, as the Tenners’ plot becomes convoluted and Alli’s plot once again goes nowhere, save some humor from Mr. DeLaurier.

ADAM PLOT REVIEW: Trouble strikes in paradise as we see a plot unfold with Adam and Becky for the first time since the season 13 premiere. Adam isn’t happy when he finds pictures of Becky hanging out with a guy named Todd in Florida. Adam logs into Becky’s Facerange account and finds a chat log between her and Todd. Though there’s no incriminating messages, Adam’s still suspicious because Becky never mentions to Todd that she has a boyfriend.
Against Imogen’s advice, Adam decides to log into Becky’s Facerange and impersonate her, sending a message to Todd saying she has a boyfriend and that they shouldn’t hang out anymore. Adam thinks his plan is clever, but Becky finds out and decides the two need a break so she can think things over.
This plot feels strong because of how simple and straightforward it is. Adam sees the pictures, freaks out, tries to solve things behind Becky’s back and it instantly backfires like everyone watching expected it to. It’s like the plot takes a page from the Degrassi Junior High days of making it super obvious that the main character is going to do something stupid, and that you (the viewer) shouldn’t follow suit, making the turmoil feel worthwhile.
In reference to whether Adam’s actions seemed out of character, it’s hard to answer that with a yes. Romantic relationships can make even the most normal, laid-back person behave like a complete idiot, something Degrassi loves to remind us time and time again. It’s understandable that Adam would be freaked out over his girlfriend posting a bunch of pictures of herself with another guy. It’s even understandable that he’d do some investigating to find out what’s going on (I’m not necessarily condoning snooping in someone’s e-mail, etc, I just understand the emotional frenzy that would drive a normal person to do so). It wouldn’t be Degrassi if characters took the common sense route and actually communicated with each other, and you can chalk up Adam’s “secret” message to Todd as him being too young and dumb to realize such a plan would never work.
Adam’s paranoia feels genuine and it’s played well throughout the episode. He’s so consumed with it that he nearly loses his job (on a side note, I‘m loving serious Drew), and Jordy portrays Adam’s increasing anger well. I’ve never had a strong attachment to Beckdam, but their final scene in this episode has been one of their better ones emotionally. Becky makes fantastic points about how she’s not “trying to be gotten with” when it comes to Todd, and scolds Adam for not being straightforward with her like she was when it came to Imogen. Becky’s wording clearly suggests that they’re not officially over. However, given the state he’s in neither is Adam’s emotional distress, which will certainly lead him into deeper water.

MAYA/TRISTAN PLOT REVIEW: It appears that since we last saw the Tenners in My Own Worst Enemy, Zoë and Miles have been attached at the lips, sucking face every chance they can get. That leaves Tristan sick to his stomach figuratively and literally, and he and Maya finally share a disdain for Ziles. Maya plots to “cool off” Zoë and Miles’ hot makeout sessions by dumping a bucket of water on them, but she accidentally dumps it on her teacher instead. Maya and Tristan are given detention where they must scrub floors, and Maya confronts Miles for leaving Tristan heartbroken. Tristan witnesses the confrontation and no longer wants to be friends with Maya, because he never wanted Miles to know that he was upset over him.
Things made sense when Maya was interested in Miles, even though it imploded before it ever began. Things continued to make sense when both Tristan and Zoë went after Miles, and Zoë eventually “won.” Things still continued to make sense when Tristan and Maya both hated Zoë and Miles and their incessant PDA. But by the end of this episode very little seemed to make sense because of weird character behavior and romantic undertones thrown on top of everything that‘s already happening.
I generally enjoy Tristan and his sassiness, but in About A Girl he’s borderline obnoxious, acting as if the world had come to an end because Miles chose Zoë as his flavor of the week. Tristan’s Achilles heel is that he becomes far too emotional when it comes to romance. After kissing Miles in My Own Worst Enemy he was too busy wandering around in lala land to care that his kiss had never actually been reciprocated (Miles didn’t react negatively, but he also didn’t react to it as if he were glad it happened). In this episode, Tristan’s behavior is on the extreme opposite end of the spectrum, which in turn made him ending his friendship with Maya seem a bit extreme as well. Maybe it’s because I’m old, but I saw Maya’s actions as her defending her best friend, not carrying out an agenda of her own (remember, Maya was led to believe that Tristan and Miles‘ kiss was mutual).
Miles and Maya give off the vibe that they like each other in some capacity, but that makes things feel crowded in this Miles mix of Zoë playing tonsil hockey and Tristan walking around butthurt. Even if that wasn’t the intention of the writers, on its own a plot where Maya steps in to exact “justice” for herself or for Tristan feels like it was stretched out to fill this episode. That’s the downside to Degrassi completely reverting back to primarily 30-minute episodes while maintaining storylines that span over many episodes. There are bound to be episodes where things feel off because very little seems to be getting accomplished.

ALLI PLOT REVIEW: I’m running out of words to say how empty and pointless Alli’s plot continues to feel. This episode‘s plot is basically the same concept from My Own Worst Enemy: there‘s a date, but a kink in plans causes Alli to come up with some scheme that backfires, and ultimately none of it matters because Alli and Leo end the episode on a happy note. Here in About A Girl, she’s afraid of moving too fast with Leo, who’s invited her for dinner at his place. She’s worried Leo may want sex, so she brings Jenna and Connor along, telling Leo that Jonnor is “growing apart” and can quote, “benefit from hanging out with a couple as great as us.” Connor unintentionally blows Alli’s cover, and Alli is forced to actually be honest with Leo and tell him she wants to take things slowly.
Alli’s potential (and Melinda’s talent) continues to be wasted, having Alli “right all of her past relationship wrongs” by taking it slow in a relationship I’m skeptical of to begin with. Good for her that she’s trying, but the spark that hooks any fan into a ship on this show has been nonexistent with Alli and Leo. If this were a couple that the show had convinced us to care about in any capacity, Alli‘s cautiousness and Leo‘s compassion would be sweet. However, when it comes down to it Degrassi is a show that must entertain, and Alli and Leo’s relationship in itself continues to fail at this. Past experience tells us that something big will probably happen, but the way this plot keeps moving by that point it might be too difficult to care.
Without a doubt, the highlight of the episode (and the only reason to watch Alli’s plot) is clearly Connor’s sex conversation at dinner. Not only was it hilarious, but it also opened up a level of seriousness when it come’s to Jonnor’s relationship as Jenna responded to Connor’s hatred of even the thought of sex. We can only hope this the beginning of what would be an interesting topic for Jonnor to explore.

Clare’s plotline has been the saving grace of these Paris episodes for me. Tristan/Miles’s storyline is enjoyable but everything else so far has been so boring, especially Alli’s. I’m looking forward to tonight though with Becky/Adam and seeing what happens there.

Honestly, if it wasn’t for Clare’s plot and Tristan/Miles I wouldn’t be very interested in this summer block. I always watch Degrassi…and I will until the end, but they need to get it together. They had a lot of potential this season and they are ruining it after a stellar end to season 12. Clare’s cancer arch is really the saving grace of this season so far and Aislinn is doing an amazing job as Clare.

I wasn’t really feeling this episode. I could care less about the Alli plot. I don’t see what significance it holds in this story. Even the Adam/Becky story was kind of meh, but I am curious to see how the events of today’s episode will affect the rest of the summer. The only thing that even made me care a little during this episode was the Tristan/Maya breakup. Episode Grades: Tristan/Maya:B Adam/Becky: C+ Alli:D-

The Adam/Becky plot was the emotional one, especially when they basically broke up. Why won’t Adam ever get a break. I do think he should lay off of Becky a bit, since everyone has close friends of the other gender and it shouldn’t be a big deal. The Alli plot wasn’t that bad, especially with including Jenna/Connor. It made us see that Jenna’s actually really into him, and not just acting it.

Connor’s remark at the dinner table about sex had me laughing so hard…not just because it was a nice reminder that even though Connor has come really far with his Asperger’s, he still has his issues and blunt moments…but because it was just plain funny. And the looks on the other three’s faces…priceless! It lightened up what was essentially a dull episode to me…

I think Adam/Becky plot was the home run for this episode tonight unlike the other episode where clares plot took the cake. Tonights episode was emotional and kind of surprising. I think Adam and Becky need to get a break from each other but I know they will end up getting back together some time. Also is it just me or does any body find it weird that imogen just broke up with Fiona and now she’s quickly on to someone new?….. Just a thought.

Imogen’s behavior is now beginning to annoy me. It’s odd how fast she is clinging to Adam after she and Fiona broke up.
Also, do you think the writers were trying to introduce a Holly J-esque character when they put Zoe on the show? At least when Holly J was mean to people, she was funny and interesting…just my thoughts.

Can I ask why Alli gets yet another plot about her boy drama crap ? I like to point out she has another next week and the A plot in Honey. Why in the hell are they focusing so much time on this ? I don’t give a damn about her plot. It’s like Groundhog Day with her plot.
What gets me. People were getting annoyed Clare seemed to be having a lot of screen time. Now that Alli is the one I don’t hear anything. At least Clare’s plot was watchable.
I’m just ready to give up watching this block of episodes. Like someone mentioned. If it wasn’t for Clare’s plot. I wouldn’t watch this block of episodes at all.

I understand everyones anger towards alli getting plots every episode, but im actually finding it quite enjoyable, and you would too if you realized the point: to watch alli and leo fall in love. i gaurantee that its all building up to her A plot in Honey where shes gonna want to stay in paris with leo. and what scares me is that alli is not on set lately. this whole tristan/miles/maya/zoe storyline has been strong from the beginning. clare’s cancer storyline is some of the best material this show has had in a while. and the adam/becky stuff was pretty well done, emotional, and completely relatable. so far this season has had me interested in every single plot since the premiere, and that has never happened before, even though i think that seasons 10-12 had stronger A plots for the most part. this season is just very edgy and intriguing

I know I understand the point, but there’s no point to it if it isn’t interesting…and it’s not. First and foremost, Degrassi is a TV show meant to entertain with drama, not fluff. Alli and Leo…bore me. Even if I didn’t care much for any of Alli’s boyfriend plots, ever, at least her other storylines with her bf’s entertained me. I can’t say the same for Leo. I’m not interested in watching her fall in love with Leo if nothing interesting is going to happen.
And other characters have fallen in love and it’s been interesting (even if the couples didn’t last, you can’t deny they fell in love)
Sean and Emma: Interesting. They were pretty much the first generation’s Eclare…without as much hate as there was love….
Jay and Manny. Interesting. I know I loved them together which was surprising.
Declan and Holly J: Interesting. I know I rooted for them.
Spinner and Emma: NOT interesting but I found them more interesting than Alli and Leo which is…saying something.
Of course, to each their own, I’m just giving my opinion but…I like Alli best when her storylines aren’t about having boyfriends–though I don’t mind the family drama that came from having them.

I think that Adam’s actions in this episode stem from more than just suspicion and jealousy. Although this isn’t explained in About a Girl, he is FTM pre-op and Todd (as well as anyone born male) can give Becky something that he can’t: sex in the traditional sense. Even if Adam and Becky had no plans to have sex, it still would have to be on his mind. I think his constant nagging about Todd being shirtless is because Adam can’t be. The sexy guy that hangs out with Becky all the time is a personification of all of Adam’s insecurities about himself. I hope that future episodes deal with how Adam being trans impacts their relationship past Becky’s parents/faith since this is something he has to deal with every day.
The tenners’ plot is starting to get spastic. After this episode, I feel like the love square/fight between Tristan and Maya/Miles’ playboy attitude/Zoe’s bitchiness is all just getting mashed together and I’m having trouble caring about any of it. I mean, is there really nothing for these kids to do in Paris other than make out with each other, bitch about it, and get burgers?
I know it won’t happen, but if they’re going to continue to waste Alli I hope they leave her ass in France. I am looking forward to more Jonner though, especially since after the dinner conversation they feel like a real couple.
On a side note, I’m also loving serious Drew!

I Disagree with everyone whole-heartedly. I feel these storylines are decent, Although Alli’s plot might have more to it… Just gotta wait and see. But Every actors/actresses are putting their all! And Dallas looked extra delicious in this Episode! Lol. But I’m Loving the Summer Block! Maya is AMAZING! TBH Clare’s Cancer isn’t the Saving grace to me. It’s kind of boring tbh. But I still like it for the simple fact her acting.

Its Asperger’s Disorder.. I know many people spell it wrong.. I do time to time. I wish people would stop making fun of it. This is not towards you.. They think mechanically and don’t know how to contro or understand certain emotions. And its also known that people with this disorder have to take baby steps to understand intimacy. I think Jonnor will be fine. I really don’t want them to break up because Connor doesn’t understand. That will make Jenna a complete ass.

I just want to say in this episode the need with Tristan and maya annoyed me. I think it seemed really rushed and premature for Tristan to “break up” with maya after she says one dumb thing. It was way too drastic for this situation.

Adam’s plot was good to me. I think seeing Todd flaunt around shirtless revived the harsh reality that Adam is FTM and Becky has had issues with that in the past. The fear of Becky running into the arms of a more “manly man” is a fear not just trans teens have but all teens. Adam didnt handle it in the right way but he has proven to make stupid mistakes in the past (Tonight, Tonight). B
The setup to the Tenners plot kinda crumbled in my eyes. You had a good friendship with Myles and Tristan going that is know over. And Tristan ended his friendship with Maya rationally. The build up hasn’t been useless or uninteresting, I just think everything is taking a new course. The best thing has been Miles. He shows his player qualities when keeping his Fling with Zoe no more than that. And also flirting with Maya on the side. I’m also waiting to see if he is straight or bisexual. Maybe he is gay but is still with girls because he doesn’t want to come out. But I feel for Tristan who is feeling lonely and betrayed. Sadly even if Miles is into him, would he actually want a relationship, or still keep his player mentality? B-
I swear Connor was single handedly save Alli’s storyline. :) But sadly it is so far gone I’m not sure what could save it. I’m just hoping for some big payoff that will make it all worth while. And I can’t wait for a future Jonnor plot from Connor’s remarks. C

A-Plot I was genuinely surprised by how good Adam’s plot was in this episode. Not that I thought it would be bad but the fact that the plot would have some contrived parts. Fortunately, this plot avoided all of those mishaps and focused on the simplicity of Adam’s issue as Kary mentioned. As the episode goes on, Adam’s actions and feelings feel natural and oddly relatable to any teenager out there in a relationship. This is mostly because when a person is in love, he/she is a different mindset that affects their decision making. Also, I liked how Imogen was portrayed in this episode much more than the season premiere. We all know she’s attracted to Adam but here she offers good support and advice to him as he worries about Becky cheating. Also, I like this more responsible Drew which makes me want to thank the writers for that kind of character development to happen. Overall, I liked this plot as it was the ONLY plot worth watching in this episode. Grade: B+
B-Plot This is the second time this season that I’ve cringed at the “Tenners” and that’s troubling considering that they are the future of Degrassi. Much like Summertime, Tristan and Maya are poorly written as they act too out of character in this episode…with Tristan being the worst. This plot was disappointing not just for what happened but that the setup in the previous two episodes was promising. Heck even Miles felt like a background character during this episode considering the potential his character has. If there is a plot that definitely goes to show how much of a waste this Paris plot has been for Degrassi, I implore everyone to watch this one as we witness the destruction of Tristan and Maya’s friendship. Grade: C-
C-Plot
I’m not even going to bother writing about Alli’s mediocre plot was so I’ll just give the only saving grace in this episode: Connor telling like it is. What this underdog did reminded me so much of how Toby told off Holly J in Season 7. Grade: D+

I have to agree with you Matthew. This to me was the weakest episode so far out of the string of summer block shows that have aired. The previous ones usually had one excellent A Plot with an above average B Plot to strengthen each episode and cover for poor C Plots. Its still early, so I’m hopeful for the rest of summer block can wow viewers. In my own opinion, I’ve just felt a bit let down so far, but that is because it seemed to me like Season 12 was leaps and bounds ahead the other seasons that have been produced since the retcon. Then again, that’s just me.

In terms of subplots, I would have to agree that this is the worst episode which is why I’m glad that the main plot was solid enough to overshadow them. It goes to show the ironic fact that the plots not taking place in Paris are the only engaging ones this season.

Thematically, I think this episode does a good job of exploring characters in love–or at least in like–who are going through a crisis.
As others have pointed out upthread, Adam’s insecurities about not being physically male yet are definitely at play when he sees pics of Becky romping around with a shirtless dude. Yes, Adam overreacts, but if people didn’t overreact, misunderstand and make bad decisions, there wouldn’t be a show.
Alii’s past sexual experiences have made her wary of starting a physical relationship with Leo, and she’s showing some maturity by deciding to wait before going farther. But, like most folks, I haven’t found this relationship very interesting. Conner was hilarious.
Tristan’s reactions were very believable to me. He’s a sensitive 15-year-old boy who feels humiliated that (1) he miscalculated when he kissed Miles and (2) that Maya, though well meaning, talked to Miles about it. As we could see when he put the sheet back up around his bed, Tristan would like to be invisible right now.
But Maya goes looking for Tristan in the next episode, so I don’t think this friendship is broken for long.

I definitely think that, besides Connor’s jokes, Adam’s plot was the only good one of the episode. I haven’t commented here in a while, so I’ll add in my two cents about this summer bloc of episodes. I agree with everyone else that there’s only a few reasons worth watching. I am watching mainly for Clare and Adam, and I do find Miles interesting. But many of the characters haven’t been acting like themselves, and some of these storylines are corny, ridiculous and boring. I could care less about Alli’s guy drama. It’s been done to death, and she always rushes into relationships. That seems to be her only storyline ever. Tristan has always bothered me, but he is just really annoying lately. Maya has been acting stupid, and I don’t care for the bitchy new girl named Zoe. Chewy could be interesting, but for now he just seems like another useless sidekick, much in the way that Hazel, Chantay and Leia were before him. And while I do like Imogen, Adam and Becky, I have some issues with these characters. Imogen is rushing into things after just breaking up with the girl she loved (Fiona) a few weeks ago. Adam and Becky have both made bad choices regarding relationships. I just feel like the episodes airing lately are made up of mostly lazy writing. I hate that it takes place during summer break in Paris-I miss it being during the school year! But it being summer break just means the only real plot, besides Clare’s cancer, continues to be what it has been since season 9: relationship drama. Not much else.

After re watchingf the episode I give Adam plot a B+. The plot was emotional strong and it started to reveal some realities and insecurities on Adams side. Before all we saw was Becky’s insecurites. It will be interesting to see how they get over this obstacle in the episodes to come.
For the tenners i give it a D+. I was not really feeling the whole Tristan / Maya plot. I felt like Tristan trook Maya’s remarks too seriously and is becoming a little too dramatic. Maya made a mistake just like he has made some in past episodes. In addition I am not really feeling the whole Paris plot I think it was a bad move by degrassi writers and hopefully they do something to lighten it up
For the Alli plot I give it a C-. The only thing that saved her plot was the Jonnor conversation. It was hilarious. I used to think they were a joke but now I’m starting to see some genuine feelings here. As for Alli and leo I think their plot is a waste of time their relationship is probably not gonna last because she lives in Canada and he lives in France tooo far!!

I have to say, one of the things that didn’t hit me until I read a few posts was the whole FTM part for Adam. That adds a whole other aspect to it. I think the issue with Tristan is that he was so much more likable before this season, and, hate to say it, but they shouldn’t have changed him (physically-hair especially and just in general). Alli seems to be like Mia, almost seeming purposeless.

After thinking about this episode for a good long while, it may have been a bit better than I originally thought. I still think its the weakest episode thus far, but in reality there will always be soft spots in each and every season.
A Plot/Adam:
The writers may not have intended for us as viewers to pick up on this, but they did a very good job showing Adam’s insecurities about being a female-to-male in a long distance relationship seemingly competing with a physically attractive guy who’s obviously being used as scapegoat for what I see as an eventual Beckdam breakup. I enjoyed watching them a bit, but as it has been pointed out before, this couple’s plots/struggles are predictable based on the writers and the obvious assumptions of a FTM being with a socially conservative girl. Nonetheless, Adam’s jealousy and fears are portrayed pretty realistically. This was a good plot that will set up the drama for Beck/Adam/Imogen going into the school year, at least I’m guessing. Anyways, props for Jordan Todosey for some solid acting, displaying the ability to shed her character’s usually mellow demeanor for on that is anxious and fearful. On a side note, I have loved how the writers have seemed to finally develop Drew into a seemingly responsible teenager.
B Plot/Maya&Tristan:
Considering that Maya and Tristan’s plots started out so strongly this season, it was a let down to see them in this episode. Tristan’s changes this season, physically and attitude wise, haven’t really wowed me, but then again I suppose they are trying to press the point that people change as they grow up. I just think that they moved too much with him in that regard. I thought Maya’s misguided actions were basically about her looking out for and defending her friend, just as Kary said above. She was led to believe that Miles’ kiss with Tristan was a mutual encounter, not Tristan jumping the gun. To be honest, I am looking forward to seeing how the school year begins when they introduce Zig this season. Unless I am mistaken, I see the writers sending undertones of a competition between Miles and Zig for Maya, considering how Miles and Maya have interacted so far and due to certain subtle reactions by both of them to each other at various points.
C Plot/Alli:
To me, the highlight of this plot was Connor’s sex remarks. He was hilarious and at the same time AJ Saudin did a great job of showing how far Connor has come socially, and yet how far he has yet to go in order to be considered a “normal/average teenager”. This whole Paris storyline with Alli has seemed plodding and pointless to me until something dawned on me. Melinda Shankar’s character is actually showing growing pains, and this plot makes it clear that while Alli may always be boy crazy, she has certainly come a LONG ways from where she was in all her earlier seasons. She is taking the slow, methodical, cautious approach to boys so far in Season 13. While this doesn’t make for exciting viewing, it does give a good look into Alli’s mind. She’s had her scares with STDs, possible pregnancies, sexting, cheating, and heartbreak. While it may or may not be normal for a teen girl to experience ALL of those things during her high school years, it makes perfect sense for how Alli is acting now. Basically, she has “seen it all and has been through it all”, figuratively speaking that is. I don’t expect this plot to get anymore interesting, but I think I can kind of understand the writers’ intention with her thus far.
