I apologize for the lack of updates recently, I’ve been preoccupied with a lot of work stuff over the past week.  Below is a recap of some of the minor Degrassi-related stuff to hit the web recently, as well as what I know about Degrassi Season 13.

Actually, the last part of that sentence is a lie.

We’re still currently in the phase where the networks are figuring out and tweaking their summer lineups (aka MuchMusic…TeenNick doesn’t really have a lineup).  Some information has been released about Degrassi season 13’s schedule, but because it’s still in the tentative stages I’ve watched it change literally overnight.

I was this close to posting some good s13 info on Thursday, then *BAM* it all changed out of nowhere.

I don’t know what the heck they’re doing, but I don’t feel like getting the fandom riled up over info that could change just as quickly as I post it.  It looks like we really are going to have to wait until Much and the Stohn make an announcement.  However, there are two things I feel strongly about:

1) The Time of My Life airs on Friday, June 21st.  Out of all the info that’s changed about this summer (Even this week the Stohn said they’ve changed the episode titles of 1301/1302 to “Summertime”), TTOML’s airdate is the only piece of info that hasn’t changed.

2) I’m about 99.999993418323% sure there will be NO telenovela this summer. Some really early press stuff from Much got out that mentioned season 13 would begin on Friday, July 12th.  There was also the random tweet from the Degrassi twitter about Degrassi on Fridays.  The networks keep switching scheduling info, but within that there’s never any mention of the telenovela format.  Epitome has been abnormally secretive about season 13…the fact things have been so quiet when for the past two years they’ve willingly posted info about the upcoming season WHILE the current season was still airing suggests there’s a significant change coming.

This week, it was announced that Munro Chambers will take over all of Degrassi’s social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Google+) on Tuesday, May 21st.  The news made me laugh out loud:

  1. If there is no telenovela this summer, I just hope they do something different than just going back to half an hour eps each friday! LIke an hour or 90 min ep each week would work

    1. 1 1/2 hour episodes would result in a total of like 10 episodes. Originally i was gonna say that sounds like a mess, but after thinking about it,it sounds like a really good idea as far as im concerned

  2. Buuuuut, Stephen said that S13 will have 40 episodes.. if they dont want their season to run longer than a year, with the telenovela format, which i dont think they will do, we would only have like six weeks of hiatus for an entire year. For some reason I dont think they would do that just because the actors need a hiatus also. It seems like they have been doing a lot of work on set lately for long hours. Sooo hmm. I think they will just bust out atleast 20 summer eps now and i believe the telenovela will live on.
PLUS, Stephen tweeted that the premiere, Summertime, will air as a one hour special, most likely to happen on July 12th, a Friday. If this premiere is so special, all the other episodes will continue to be half hours (parts one and two). I think they will premiere Summertime on a friday to get us all excited, then start the telenovela with part one of the next episode the following monday.
Sorry for writing SO much, but do you understand my theory? :)

  3. Clearly I wasn’t online at the right time to see all the season 13 spoilers posted today (scripts!?).

    1. Someone unrelated to the Degrassi fandom posted a copy of one of the season 13 audition sides. We’re not talking generic sides like this from the early auditions, the sides leaked yesterday were taken straight from some version of an actual episode script draft. I got a copy of them before they were taken down, but of course I can’t post it until after whichever episode they’re from actually airs.

  4. Most likely if they aren’t doing Telenovela they might be switching it to Hourlong drama format. Running it with the same airing timetable shows like Pretty Little Liars has (20-24 episodes split into two 10-12 episode blocks or three 6-8 episode blocks).

My only concern shifting styles again is that hourlong has a different tempo than split half-hour. In that a second act cliffhanger is no longer viable build up.

  5. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE it if they do hour long episodes every Friday. But I will be very disappointed if they are 30-minute episodes every Friday, just like the fall and spring blocks.

  6. I would hate to see the telenovela format go away. I hope that Tate is right, and that they are just doing an hour-long premiere to get the wheels turning. However, with that said, I believe that Seasons 10,11, and 12 all started on Mondays with their telenovela formats. If you remember Stefan Brogren from one of the Hangouts, he mentioned that there was a big reshuffling going on at that time. He may have been talking about casting new characters or perhaps he may have been vaguely referencing this particular subject. I always felt that the telenovela not only helped viewer numbers for the show, but also was a gift for Teennick and MuchMusic for summer programming. They were given a weeklong schedule for a popular show at the time of year when their target audience would be most available for viewing the show live on TV. Either way, I’m looking forward to Season 13!
