MAYA PLOT REVIEW:  Degrassi has done a good job of steadily showing the aftermath of characters directly impacted by Cam’s suicide in Bitter Sweet Symphony.  It’s only appropriate that the arch ends with Maya, who was closest to Cam yet seems to be the least affected by his death.

123738-1The key words there are “seems to be.”

Maya’s biggest challenge is that people have expected her to react and behave a certain way since Cam’s death.  It’s a compelling situation because you can see both sides of the issue.  If someone seems unaffecting by a personal tragedy, the first thought is that, at some point, they need to grieve.  On the other hand, why would you want to grieve because others think you should?  Maya doesn’t want to be known as “the grieving girlfriend of the guy who died.”

In the end, all that matters is the moment we’ve been waiting for since Cam’s death:  Maya’s emotional breakdown.  For me Dallas’ breakdowns in Bitter Sweet Symphony still stands as the strongest reaction to Cam’s death, but Maya’s holds its own very well.  Her words cause chills as it’s compelling watching someone whose normally soft spoken completely lose it.

I don’t have an emotional connection to Zaya, but at this point I wouldn’t have any issues with them getting together in the future.  Zig has redeemed himself since Cam’s death, not only in showing remorse for how he treated Cam, but also how he treated Maya in Zombie.  He likes her.  He could’ve easily taken advantage of the fact that she was throwing herself at him, but he refuses because he knows something’s off.  Out of those directly impacted by Cam’s death, Maya and Zig had the most to lose.  Ironically, the situation also gives them the most room to grow as people, as this story arch comes to a close for the season.

DREW PLOT REVIEW:  At first this plot seems as silly as it does to everyone on the show, even Drew.  However, it’s not until the end of Part 1 where everything seems to click into place.  Remember the Drew Torres from earlier in the season? The one who was convinced he’s nothing and decided to drop out of school?  His actions back then were frustrating, but the state of mind he was in still plagues him.  Without sports, he lacks confidence to do anything else.  I loved the scene where Bianca tells Drew that she was the one that nominated him.  She has faith in him, even when he lacks faith in himself.  This interaction is a testament to how far this couple has come, as they’re currently the strongest ship on the show.

123738-4Part 2 of this plot is a different kind of animal.  One of the primary themes is that Drew realizes he needs to take things seriously in order to be taken seriously.  Outside of that, the show gives up providing anything profound in order to reveal the plot’s true purpose:  the election is nothing more than a plot device.  That became obvious during the debate, with Degrassi mocking itself and the fact the debate is a joke with a small (and uninterested) crowd.  Long before Simpson reveals the results of the election it’s blatantly clear that Drew will win, but what comes of it is something we’ll have to wait and see.  With both Bianca and Eli graduating and headed off the University next year, the writers have used the election and their appointments of President Drew and “Veep” Clare to establish Degrassi’s newest power duo outside of their parting love interests going into Season 13.

***************

CONNOR PLOT REVIEW:  The greatness of Connor’s relationship with Jenna in Season 12 has been that it shows us the pros and cons of his Asperger’s syndrome without actively pointing out that he has it.  In Zombie, we see Connor tackling his issue (Alli’s presence causing him to miss out on alone time with Jenna) directly in what he thinks is a clever way by trying to hook Alli up with Eli.  Even when everyone, including the viewers know those two are incompatible, we can all agree that Connor’s reasoning when it comes to those two is spot on; both Alli and Eli are indeed lonely and miserable.

123738-3It’s fantastic to know that Jenna is understanding of Connor’s behavior.  He assumes that whenever she’s mad at him it means she wants to break up with him, but he kindly assures him that’s not the case.  Unfortunately, the plot seems to veer off near the end.  Connor’s plot wraps up earlier than normal, and the more he continues with Eclare the more it suddenly seems like he’s meddling.  Eclare had almost all of Season 12 being healthy up until Ray Of Light; since then, things have been off.  Their final conversation here feels odd; Eli knows Clare just lost the election, and suddenly brings up his NYU and his desire to get back together despite them having not spoken since their “break.”  I’ve always had faith that regardless of how Eclare ends, the show would wrap up their storyline in a satisfactory way.  With their communication skills currently out of whack, that faith is definitely shaken a bit.

  4. Connor is a great character when given a storyline, so I hope this continues through Season 13. Less focus on the eventual newbies and more focus on Connor, who has remained severely underused his entire run.

Not that I’m a huge Adam fan or anything, but us there any reason why he hasn’t been in any of these episodes, especially supporting his brother’s run for school president? It seems rather odd not to have him make an appearance during Zombie.

  5. Olivia Scriven is such a good actress, especially considering she’s one of the youngest on the show. I cried during that scene when she finally broke down about Cam. It was long awaited. I’m sad they’re pushing the actual season finale to June, but this was a great episode to end on and overall this entire block of episodes has been fantastic.

    1. While I think she was good in the living room scene I think she was lacking after playing the cello scene. I think she has potential to be good but a do see a lot of scenes where she isn’t the best, but hopefully she gets better. Like she has the worst kissing face, make sme laugh my ass off. Also her scene with zig wasn’t very good at the beginning, when they are sitting together.

I love Zig. He acted immature be cause he is a FRESHMAN dude. And Cam was a dick to Zig and hit him as well. Zig saw it as a rivalry, and told him to get out of Maya’s life he did NOT tell him to kill himself. Cam took his words too deeply and was psychologically ill, so he offed himself. If it wasn’t Zig it would’ve been anyone else that could’ve said the last phrase that would send Cam of the deep end.

Its one thing not to like a character but you put NO critical thought in your statement whatsoever. I know TV isn’t the most engaging activity, but you could at least think of the reasons character do what they do… I mean whats the point if you dont think about it?

He can’t afford a new hoodie, especially when the one he has is good enough. =.= Not everyone has so many clothes they can even interchange jackets everyday.

  7. I feel like this end of this episode was a strange lead-up to a potential Clare/Drew pairing. Her telling Eli off in front of him, Bianca asking Drew if they’ll be okay next year, and the whole dynamic of their relationship where they were at ends, and are now growing closer together. I highly doubt a relationship will blossom (I don’t think Clare would be able to stand with someone who wasn’t at least comparable to her on an intellectual level), I can definitely see a kiss happening, likely after Bianca and Drew get into a serious fight or something.

By the way, after season 12 is over, I was going to re-watch it all, but I don’t even want to THINK about Bittersweet Symphony part 1 and 2 and all the other episodes about him before and after he died so I guess that’s kind of out of the question now. Cam was my favourite character, but I’m still pretty impressed that Degrassi went there again. BUT if they even THINK about pulling another stunt like that next year…

  11. I don’t like Zig. I don’t like his character but that’s not the problem cause its kinda fun to have a character to hate. My issue is that the actor playing Zig sucks imo. Yeah, he has emotional scenes but I always feel like its lacking. I can tell what emotion he’s trying to convey, but I just can’t feel it.
I think, out of respect for Cam, Maya shouldn’t pursue a relationship with Zig. At least not yet. I don’t blame Zig exactly but he really should’ve known Cam was having issues (even Zig says Cam went crazy when he hit him). I mean, he can tell when Maya is unstable but he can’t see it in Cam? I guess it’s possible but I don’t like it. Maya and Zig sitting together was just awkward to watch.
I’m glad Eli is leaving. I love Eli but he’s played out. And Claire. I love Claire but lately she’s getting on my nerves. I want her character to have another personality change. Maybe since she will be with Drew more she will loosen up.
I really wish the stories were more tied together not just finished up in one episode. More like a soap opera. That’s essential what degrassi is but things don’t last long enough. I mean, Maya’s breakdown is over already? The plots just don’t last long enough for me.

    1. Are you only saying that because Cam is dead? I’m sorry but if you are a hardcore Cam/Maybell fan then there’s no way that I can take your argument seriously. Do not forget that Zig turned down Maya the first time because he was worried about her. Deep down, he is a human being and he showed that during his conversation with Damon in Karma Police. Also, did you watch that actual episode? Because clearly Ricardo Hoyos showed his acting chops when Zig was expressing his mistakes. He acts simplistically and heck, I rather an actor go that route instead of being over the top.

      1. Nope I’m not hardcore for any couple. Yes I’ve seen all the episodes. When any other actor on the show shows emotion, they SHOW emotion. Ricardo doesn’t. He doesn’t really show anything. Yeah he expresses his mistakes, so what? That says something about his character not the actor. I get that Zig turned Maya down but again that is his character not him as an actor. It’s not his character I have issues with its Ricardo. I don’t like Zig but that’s what makes me like Zig. He is pleasantly unlikable as a character lol. I don’t like the characters personality. But the acting is just yuck.

      2. I thought Ricardo portrayed Zig’s anger/frustration pretty damn well in Zombie part 2…

You also have to remember that Zig is just a mellow character. That’s obviously no excuse for poor acting, but it makes it easier to justify any mistakes Ricardo might make in the way he portrays Zig’s emotions.

Honestly, Ricardo did a great job and I feel like he is perfect for the character of Zig. He’s cute, kinda funny, nice, remorseful, and immature as Zig. He portrays emotions like a high school freshman boy would pretty realistically. I’m not saying hes the best actor ever by any means, I just think you’re criticizing the young canadian actor too harshly. Also keep in mind these are typically new inexperienced actors. I think the point is to watch the characters and understand their mannerisms, although I do have some people I feel dont act naturally (Jessica Tyler besides the baby thing but even then..).

  12. First off, congrats to Ramona Brackert for another phenomenally well written pair of episodes and the Degrassi cast for doing a great job on another wonderful set of episodes for this season’s final stretch.

While some areas of Zombie may have lagged, once again the main plot was simply excellent. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Season 12 and the Niners did a great job breathing new life and interest into the show with strong young actors who could stand on par with the older, more established and well known actors/characters.

A Plot: Maya’s story in this episode was not only compelling but also emotionally raw in the very best way possible. After denying her inner feelings about Cam and his death, her curtain of invincibility eventually cracked. When those feelings finally poured out in an epic flood of real world emotions during an argument with her family, Olivia Scriven wonderfully showcased her acting talents. To be so young and yet still project that kind of raw, unvarnished emotion about losing a first love left me deeply impressed. She has a great future in acting ahead of her if that is what she wishes to pursue. As far as Maya’s mental state goes, I just want to say that as a fan of the show, it was heartening to see her finally get past unhealthily hiding her feelings and talk about it. It will be interesting to see the path the writers will set out for her next year, considering that she is still seeking some semblance of closure with Cam’s death, only expressing anger at him for his death and the wreckage it has left her to deal with. The whole thing with Zig didn’t bother me at all, since Zig has basically recused himself from his guilt via confession during French class. He suffered greatly, and perhaps rightly so, but nonetheless, he has come full circle on that front. The fact that he was willing to look out for her as a friend insteasd of pushing her to go out with him really redeemed himself in my eyes, morally speaking. Excellent, simply excellent.

B Plot: Drew and Clare may have had a bit of a happy ending for those two as they look forward to uncertain prospects for the unknown next season. With that said, it certainly did seem to have the undertones of Sav and Holly J from their last season on the show, but I will remain optimistic that Degrassi’s writers will hopefully be able to continue building on the string of rock solid episodes that Season 12’s C Block produced. It will be interesting to see Drew try and probably fail hilariously at being a serious student leader and organizer with his faithful assistant, Clare. She is a mystery for me going into Season 13, simply because she has been attached at the hip to Eli for so long that it seems impossible for me to imagine a plausible plot for her solo without him. Aislinn Paul certainly will be able to do a great job, but this WILL be a great challenge for the writers/producers. Good luck on this conundrum Stefan and Ramona!

C Plot: I was initially pessimistic with Connor’s plot for Zombie, although he did redeem himself a bit by the end with his attempt to advise Eli and watching him try and deal with Alli and Jenna. The more I think about it, Connor and Cam are strikingly similar in one sense: they are in my opinion the two most socially awkward around girls and both seemed to stumble in the early hurdles of their respective relationship. Cam had his trouble due to various personal mental problems and Connor with his Asperger’s. I have pined previously to the gods in vain for a boost in Degrassi’s budget to increase their number of episodes, simply so as to expand on characters that just don’t get enough air time and see their potential wasted so unfortunately due to restraints in air time. At that time I was talking about Fiona, but Connor unfortunately falls into this black hole of bad luck as well. He excels at almost all of his storylines, and I certainly look forward to seeing him next year and seeing how far Jonnor can or is allowed to develop.

I know that this is not technically the season finale, but for most of the characters seen in Zombie it was. Since the finale will probably focus exclusively on the seniors, rightly so since it is their sendoff, I loved how this episode DIDN’T perfectly close out storylines. It left the characters involved to still deal with their immediate situations at hand, whether its Maya finally grieving, Clare trying to deal with her defeat and newfound position, or Connor deftly guiding himself through the maze that is high school romance. With all that said, I must give credit to the producers and writers of Degrassi again. During Season 10 and 11, I had serious doubts about the show’s viability going into the future, and my hopes and prayers were answered in Season 12, which has largely been one of the best seasons lately to go on air in my humble opinion.

    1. I could not have say it better myself. The aftermath of Cam’s suicide has been seriously one of the best-portrayed aftermaths in Degrassi history. It completely outshines what happened after J.T. Yorke’s death which was just mediocre mostly because of Mia Jones’ presence in the story line. The fact that the Degrassi writers spanned out the aftermath instead of, like Kary said, mushing it into a three-plot episode was a smart move.

Also, much like the students’ reactions of Cam’s suicide, the range of how Dallas, Eli, Zig, and Maya dealt with the aftermath was interesting to see. You had Dallas and Zig using anger to deal with the guilt of his suicide. However, in Dallas’s case he had “tragic guilt” while Zig just had plain guilt that made him frustrated and slightly overwhelmed. For Eli, we saw how finding the dead body of someone who killed themselves was haunting enough to make do things like resort to more drugs to cope with it. The fact that the writers tied that in with Eli believing that he “attracts death” as he said to his therapist, was a cleverly perfect correlation that suited this plot well. Plus, Simpson mentioned his experience with suicide to Eli which provided a solid piece of continuity given that the event happened two decades ago. Then, there’s the recent reaction that is Maya’s. At first, she did not seem affected by Cam’s suicide but it was not until the end of BSS Part Two that we would know that Maya would gradually grieve Cam’s death. Maya decided to pull a Manny Santos and start dressing provocative to get boys’ attention and it put her into a place where she thought she was being treated nice by a total stranger that did not judge her for being the girlfriend of someone who killed himself. Then when Katie and her mother discuss her recent behavior she finally explodes with frustration and sadness. As Kary said, it no way compares to Dallas’s reaction to Cam’s death but Olivia manages to capture the confusion that Maya has felt since Cam’s suicide.

Overall, I enjoyed watching Season 12C. The episode Karma Police may have had a cop-out main plot but it did not ruin the quality of the spring block thanks to the subplots. Like I said, 12C had a very “Go There” central story line and it succeeded because it was well done. Let’s hope the finale in June finishes Season 12 off right as the focus will be Fimogen *crosses fingers*

Being that said, what were your thoughts on the new actors that they brought in this season? I honestly thought that they were all a great addition and helped make Season 12 as successful as it was. Just curious, thanks again.

      2. I actually thought the new actors, specifically Demetrius and Dylan, were refreshing to have in the Degrassi series. They all played their part well even though I still think that Sarah Fisher could work on her line delivery. But that’s because the story lines they’ve given Becky have been half good half bad, Building a Mystery in particular. Still, the fact is that these actors, and the rest on the show to be exact, have been able to try to make the most out of a plot no matter how good or bad it is.

Yes, Mia did ruin that entire storyline, but even if she wasn’t around, they wouldn’t have done much after JT’s death. Just like the fans, the writers have their favorites and least favorites, and they’ve made it pretty clear since the pregnancy storyline that Liberty is not a favorite among the writers. Even TOBY got more in the aftermath that she did and he wasn’t even in the opening credits anymore!

  13. The scene with Maya really made my eyes water. I knew it was going to be emotional but I never expected it to effect me so much!

There are a lot of people arguing about Zig and whether he’s a likable character or not. There is mentioning of what he said to Cam and that’s what makes him unlikable. Did everyone forget that Maya was the one who had a crush on Zig from the very beginning and then he chose Tori instead? And then later on Zig turns around, cheats on Tori, and decides he likes Maya more now! That in and of itself made Zig unlikable for me. I am having a very hard time forgiving him for that. Then on top of that, to keep trying to steal Maya over and over again, leading to Cam’s suicide, just makes him look like a big selfish ass to me. Yeah, he apologized, yet he never really apologized to Maya for choosing Tori first and then changing his mind! I don’t know if one apology is good enough for me as the viewer to forgive the character. If Maya wants to then that’s her choice, but I’m still having a hard time forgiving him from the very beginning- when he chose Tori over Maya.

  15. Sigh, why didn’t we get something like this in Season 6? Were the writers behind this episode around back then? If so, that only fuels my theory that the writers play favorites. Yes, I’m STILL pissed that Liberty never got her own episode (“The Bitterest Pill” was really more about Toby), despite her history and amount of emotional baggage with JT.

Clare/Drew is so going to happen. This is starting to get ridiculous. The number of guys that has been interested in Clare over the years is, to be quite frank, pretty unrealistic. KC, Eli, Jake, Connor, Reese, Fitz, Asher (if you count him), possibly Drew… am I missing anybody? Before anybody is all “BUT ECLARE!!111!!!”, remember Spinner/Emma? Exactly.

    1. It’s not unrealistic. I think that there’s a rule among the writers that Clare must have a guy interested in her at all times. The unrealistic thing is somebody like Clare having that many guys interested in her. I’m not talking about looks (yes, she is the plainest girl on the show, but that’s not important). She has the type of personality that would turn any teenage boy away.

  17. I have to say, I really love how the show did the reactions to Cam’s death. There are some plot’s where there’s no mention of Cam’s death at all, which is good, because not everyone was close to Cam. Yeah, they felt sad when they first found out, and they were supportive, but his death doesn’t truly impact them. Then there was Tori and Tristan’s scene, where Tori breaks down about Cam’s death, and Tristan hugs her. Zig’s response is absolutely perfect, because it show’s his guilt over being the last person to talk to Cam, and to basically tell him to go away, and it shows how people think that if you weren’t close to the person who died, you have no right to be upset. This is a ridiculous concept, because you could still be close to someone without actually knowing everything about them. Tori did spend a lot of time with Cam for Maya’s sake, so she was around him enough that having him suddenly die would truly affect her. His absence would be truly felt for her because she spent time just hanging out with him.

I loved Dallas’ scene in Bittersweet Symphony. It was so powerful and beautiful and heartbreaking, but the only thing I didn’t like was, directly after, the next plot with Dallas in it, had nothing to do with Cam’s death. There was no facet of Dallas’ feeling’s of responsibility. Instead, they bring in his son kind of randomly. I loved that plot, but I didn’t like it’s placement in the storyline. I feel like Dallas should have a longer reaction to Cam’s death, but that’s just me.

I think the only thing I’m really still waiting for, is for Zig to confess to Maya what he said to Cam the day he died. I know Zig is trying to win over Maya, and as much as I used to hate him for trying to steal Maya away WHILE he was still with Tori, I’ve come to sympathize with him more because they have humanized him. But I feel that his confession has to still be coming, in some way or another. I just can’t wait for it to blow up in his face. Maya is so angry with Cam for killing himself, which is understandable, but I feel like her anger is kind of misplaced. I don’t know, I guess I’m just still angry with Zig for what he said to Cam. As someone above me said, Zig can see when Maya is all messed up, but he couldn’t see it with Cam? I guess I get it; he likes Maya, he hates Cam, therefore he doesn’t care how Cam is feeling, but it just strikes me as pretty stupid.

Don’t get me wrong. I KNOW it wasn’t Zig’s fault Cam kill himself. I know that any person could have been the one to push him over the edge. What I don’t like is that Zig is still pursing Maya without telling her what he did, and his part in Cam’s death. I feel like it’s dishonest.

    2. I doubt Zig telling Maya again that he was the last to talk to Cam and what they said to each other would make Maya hate him. She knows he never meant for Cam to kill himself, had no idea of his illness, and it was retaliation towards Cam’s words (unprovoked taunts about the black eye) and Zig’s feelings.

All Zig saw was anger from Cam, especially unprovoked anger like during that hockey game, Zig presumed, like most people would with those they’re not close to, that Cam was just a jerk. Subtle things are hard for anyone, including teens, to pick up and sometimes people don’t think their friends’ thoughts are that dark unless there are real neon signs. As of right now, Zig isn’t pushing his feelings and hasn’t for a long while. He’s laid them out there but is willing to be and do what Maya wants at this time.

Zig can see when Maya is messed up because she’s his friend and he cares about her. Zig didn’t really know Cam that well… nobody did. Maya was the closest to him, but even she couldn’t really tell. She should have been able to tell, he basically told her he was messed up early in their relationship, but she was naive and in denial.

I think they should have Zig tell her again, now that time’s passed since Cam’s death. I think in BSS pt. 2 that she was still in shock, so it really didn’t sink in what he said. This has been one of the best seasons (though the past ones have been alright), and I think the finale will be the icing on the cake. The only thing I worry about is, what can they do with season 13 to make it even bigger.

  19. The best part of this episode was seeing Maya when she flips out multiple times. She totally sounded like Katie and it was awesome.
    Oh, and veep.

  20. I liked this episode. Maya’s storyline made me tear up, and the acting was good. I love how Zig redeemed himself, and I look forward to Zaya getting together. Connor’s plot was refreshingly funny, and he and Jenna are cute together. Drew was good in this episode, I don’t hate him anymore. I think he and Clare as a pair or friends can be interesting, I just want Clare to be more interesting as a person. Dallas was right, she is boring! I am also glad that Eclare is done. They are just so overrated and overshown IMO. Makes sense Clare did not want him back, since he is leaving anyways.

    1. It bugs me how people are upset that the writes have “favourites”

Of course writers have favorites, as they do in every single TV show that is produced. With a cast as big as is it, it even harder for every single cast member to have their own story-line.

      1. It’s also bad writing to play favorites, though. They didn’t do a good job with the aftermath of JT’s death, simply because the two characters most affected weren’t the writers’ pets. Toby MIGHT be excusable, since he was demoted to recurring character, but what’s their excuse for not giving Liberty a storyline (The “Bitterest Pill” was more about Toby and he at least got another subplot relating to JT’s death)? Especially since most of the the storylines in Season 7 and the last half of season 6 were so horrible and a waste of screentime?

  22. I love this exchange between Connor and Dave

Connor: I can set up Eli with Ali!
Dave: … yeah…yeah…and maybe fire and gasoline can hang out.
