Screencaps from audition tapes of the original Degrassi: The Next Generation cast

Welcome to December!! Normally around this time of year we’re in the midst of the “Degrassi Wasteland,” when there’s absolutely nothing going on in the Degrassi universe.  This December is different…the Degrassi In Ghana special airs tonight, and Degrassi’s Vegas episode airs on the 14th.

The networks haven’t officially announced anything yet, but Epitome is proceeding as if Season 13 will happen.  The writers are having a brainstorming session tomorrow, December 3rd.  And as of now Casting Director Larissa Mair is still accepting audition tapes for Season 13.  Looking through her resumé this is the first time she’s done casting for Degrassi, but not for Epitome (she did casting work for Season 2 of The L.A. Complex).

Before I get into the details of how to audition this needs to be said:  IF YOU ARE NOT A CANADIAN CITIZEN, YOU WILL NEVER BE CAST ON DEGRASSI.  It doesn’t matter how amazing of an actor you are, or that being on Degrassi is your dream.  The show receives funding/credits/etc from the Canadian government, and in return they’re required to do things like use Canadian cast and crews.

Now if you are Canadian you can follow the instructions below (which are also on the casting agency’s website):

Hello and welcome to the Degrassi self tape audition page!

*If you are a male, please click here to download your audition sides  (you will be reading the role of JOSH).

*If you are a female, please click here to download your audition sides (you will be reading the role of EMILY).

Not only do these documents contain sides, they also have an information package with all of the details you need to send in your audition for Degrassi. There are instructions on how to do the self tape, what to send us, and where to send it. Please read it very carefully and be sure to follow all of the instructions. Please note that you must be a Canadian citizen.

The deadline for self tapes is Monday, December 17.
Due to the large number of respondents, we ask that there be NO PHONE CALLS, please.

    1. Daniel has dual citizenship. The guy that played Damian (Mazin Elsadig) several seasons ago is also American. I think Stephen Stohn said Americans are also eligible if they have a Canadian work visa, but it’s still a long shot based on how many people already submit auditions.

    1. That was a guest role, she wasn’t a regular or recurring cast member. The main cast and crew have to be Canadian.

  13. Why is it sooooo important that you must be a Canadian citizen in order to get a spot in Degrassi. What’s up with that. There a many talented people in the U.S.A that would love to audition for Degrassi. I was really hoping to audition today but now I see that I can’t because I’m not from Canada. I am an expressive person. I’m a 14 yr old actor. If I was on the show I would be the next Monroe Chambers/ Bruno Mars of the show except I play the guitar. I sing. I always wear black and I love movie directing. A part of me is crushed to see that you must be Canadian to join the show. This is Blatantly irrelevant.

  14. I will audition for Degrassi. NO matter if I’m American, I will Audition and I will try and try and try until they see that you don’t have to be Canadian to audition and that I’m not giving up until I get that part. And That’s a Promise!

    1. You do realize that the show is funded by the CANADIAN government. There is a contract between the show and the government stating the main actors must be Canadian and it’s final. Degrassi can’t break the contract for someone.

  16. Its not right to have only Canadians for the role. So what. If your not Canadian. It kind of seem a lil racist. Because everyone that watches degrassi and wants to be on it can’t. Because their not “Canadians”. Thats weird. Maybe that’s why i stopped watching your show. I like the show. But after this Canadian thing. I dont watch it. Weirdos.

    1. im sorry but you sound a little bit ridiculous. the reason they dont cast americans is because it would cost more and be more of a hassle. the people would have to pay extra for that person to come work here. im sure there are more canadian viewers than american – and if you think about it, the chances of actually being cast are pretty slim anyway, they only get like 3 new people per season

    2. The show is funded by the Canadian Government, in other words, Canadian taxpayers are the reason the show can continue to be properly funded and therefore stay on the air for as long as it has. Because the population of Canada is paying, they would want the work to go to Canadians. How would you feel if you had to pay for a TV show to run, but nobody in your family was on it because all of the people from another family were auditioning and getting the parts. There are so many things that Canadians are excluded from that are based in the States, so this isn’t some new thing. I can understand the frustration about not being able to audition, but when you think about it, it makes sense. If Canada is paying, then they will want the fruits of the show to go back to their community, whether it be opportunity, boosting the economy or other. It has nothing to do with Canada being ‘better’ or American teens being ‘not good enough’. It is purely because Eptiome has a contract that with the Canadian government to protect the interests of those who are paying the bills. It may not be ‘fair’ or what you wanted to hear, but it is the truth and it is understandable.

Wow, too bad I can’t audition, I am from Europe so if there ever would be a character who is like from changing program , that could be me and I’d love to play in Degrassi since this show is great, and I’m not sure if in the show yet ever was an intern student (changing program) from other country, having an accent and etc.

I dont get it hows a show that me and everybody who likes this shows from everywhere across the world and you tell basically the outter country fans that they cant be in your show, but the teens in your country can, thats in enquality for telievision, gain some variety Im pretty sure there are milliins of people from american teens that would loveto be on your show, whats the use in that case if your company were to air it just in canada it wouldnt be as much fans the internationally known, so atleadt have and open eye or a different perspective to allow different countries to atleast audtion.
