PLOT A SUMMARYImogen designs an elaborate set for the play, but it costs too much for the school to build without a sponsorship.  She reluctantly visits her mom Natalie, a surgeon, and Imogen gets the money from her despite still holding a grudge against her leaving her and her dad years ago.  As they prepare to build the set people spot a weird guy outside of Degrassi in his pajamas; it’s Imogen’s dad.  Imogen finds introduces Fiona to him, and invites her over to dinner to see life at the Moreno house.  While cooking Imogen notices her dog Volta is missing, and goes outside to find her.  She finds Volta dead underneath her dad’s car…he ran over Volta and had no memory of it.

Realizing that her dad’s condition is getting worse she insists on going to work with her dad, but he tells her no.  Meanwhile, Eli is on her case about building the set (which is behind schedule), but she insists she has everything in control.  When Imogen gets in trouble for lashing out at Marisol, her mom visits her and tells Imogen her dad has been diagnosed with dementia.  Imogen says she refuses to abandon her dad like Natalie did.  While on the phone with her dad he mentions wanting to take Volta on a walk, forgetting that Volta had died.  At home he has a spell in front of Imogen where he refers to her as Natalie instead.  Imogen goes to her mom and breaks down, realizing she can’t take care of her dad on her own.  Natalie hires a caretaker and Imogen’s dad tells Imo that she needs to have a relationship with her mom because his condition is only going to get worse.  With everything that’s been going on in her life Imogen apologizes to Eli and Fiona for her behavior, and they surprise her by showing her the finished version of her set design for the play.

I found myself fully engaged watching this alternate side of Imogen.  An overwhelming majority of her existence has been her in a perky, quirky mode.  However, on the occasions where things got serious (aka various past situations with Eli and Fiona) we’ve seen her emotionally shut down quickly, as if someone had flipped a switch.

Her feelings toward her mom hit too close to home.  We’ve all either experienced or know someone who’s experienced the feeling of abandonment when one parent leaves the other, and starts a family of their own.  Imogen knows something is wrong with her father, hence the reason she’s been embarrassed to introduce Fiona to him.  I love the difficult position the show puts Imogen in; she feels obligated to stand by and take care of her dad because she wants to be nothing like her mom.  It’s only when her eyes are opened to the fact that her dad’s dementia will only get worse that she realizes she can’t take care of him by herself.

Some may think that the show killing Volta was a bit extreme, but I felt it was perfect without going over the top, showing how serious the effects of dementia are.  It’s heartbreaking that Imogen’s dad could kill their dog and not remember a thing, and disturbing that at any moment he could unintentionally do something to place himself and Imogen in danger.  This plot ends with somewhat of a happy ending, but it’s warranted.  Eli and Fiona displaying the set that Imogen could never finish on her own points to a bigger picture, that even though we can be stubborn, embarrassed or afraid, people are willing to help us if we’d simply find the courage to ask them.

****************

PLOT B SUMMARYJake and Katie are getting closer, but Katie’s not interesting in dating because she doesn’t want to get hurt again like she did with Drew.  Katie decides to pair up with Dallas for an assignment because she knows she won’t fall for a guy like him.  He uses golf as the topic for their physics paper and while working on it Katie realizes she and Dallas is intelligent, and they have more in common than she thought.  Jake asks Katie out, but she declines because she and Dallas have to work on their project.  Jake spots Dallas and Katie together working on their project in the Degrassi garden and gets upset because he‘s jealous, and that causes Katie to go to Dallas‘ hockey game and support him.  Jake arrives at the game and confesses his feelings for Katie, who realizes she feels the same way and the two kiss.  Dallas spots them kissing and the next day Katie breaks the news to Dallas that she and Jake are an item.  Jake and Katie return to the garden to see it’s been vandalized, and Katie confronts Dallas because she believes he and the hockey team are responsible.

This plot was pretty decent and managed to leave me in a swirl of emotions.  It’s funny how all throughout Degrassi: Showdown TeenNick has wanted fans to “choose sides,” but I could honestly see things from both Jake and Dallas’ side.  Both liked Katie, and both felt scorned by her at different points in the episode (though Jake eventually won out).  As much as that sucks, that’s the way it goes sometimes.

The part that leaves me confused though is the destruction of the garden.  The assumption is that Dallas was responsible with the help of the hockey team, but at the same time his reaction reads that of someone who was legitimately surprised by Katie’s accusation (we know for sure Luke’s punk ass was involved).  Who knows, I’m probably overthinking it.  But if he did do it I do know that it’ll continue to jive with concept that makes Dallas so intriguing, the fact that he is truly a multi-dimensional character that can’t simply be placed in the generic “good” or “bad” categories…placing him in the “human” category is much more accurate.

*************

PLOT C SUMMARY: Becky sets up at a table in the foyer to help raise money for a hurricane relief fund.  However, when Adam tries to set up at the table to sell tickets for the musical, Becky goes off on him until Jenna tells her that Adam had already reserved the table in advanced.  Becky decides to set up right next to Adam’s table and urge people to donate to the charity instead of buying a play ticket.  Adam asks her to stop and she reveals that she’s trying to interfere with the play to get back at Eli, and Adam calls her a hypocrite for using charity as revenge.  Becky realizes that and decides to tear down her display.  She finds herself developing a crush on Adam after he asks her to hang out, but then Jenna drops the news on Becky that Adam is transgender.

I liked how the show is resisting the urge to completely make Becky an extreme Christian caricature (aka Darcy).  She acted out of revenge, Adam called her out on her crap, and she realized the error of her ways.  The plot ends in this episode with her shocked to find out that Adam is transgender, and eventually she’ll once again struggle dealing with something that goes against her values.  However, the issue here is that it felt like this plot received less screen time than any normal C plot does.  Any major, positive feelings toward this plot is based more on the anticipation of where it’s headed as opposed to what happened.  It’s difficult to formulate an opinion on a storyline here and gone in the blink of an eye; it feels more incomplete than anything.

  1. I forgot all about the Becky/Adam plot. It only had two scenes it felt like. Anyways, I’m interested in Imogen’s plot. I kind of think Degrassi just love having cars be part of the drama. Eli crashing his car, Jacinta getting hit by one, a poor dog get hit by one as well… I’m looking forward to tonight though.

Not to mention, this plot would be better if they stretched it out more instead of doing the Degrassi trademark happy ending wrap-up.

I guess that’s why the C plot was so brief. But that wouldn’t need to happen if they cut out some of the pointless filler they’ve done in the past few weeks.

Who know…maybe Imogen is next on the chopping block to make way for more Drew storylines?

Gosh Imogens plot hits close to home :( Ugh Dallas was soooo awesome till they trashed the garden but Katie did lead him on….he asked multiple times if she was seeing Jake and while she doesn’t need to verbally vomit her whole dating catalog she should have told Dallas from the start she wasn’t interested in him and (to me it was very obvious Dallas was interested in her, but she might have been blinded by Jake’s shiny teeth)….I still like Becky and Adam, I think he could change her for the better but eh….

    1. That promo, in my opinion, was one of Teennick’s better ones this season.

The only thing that worries me is that it feels like there are a lot of random and rushed plots for the last week. Off the top of my head without looking, there’s the play with Tristan, Clare’s party/the fight, Clare sexting(and maybe dealing with sexual harassment), and Drew being…Drew and 2 other plots I can’t recall, which probably deal with more play, hockey, and homophobia stuff. A lot of those need more than 2 episodes and will ultimately lead to the inevitable cliffhanger.

Speaking of the fight, is anyone else worried it’s going to suck like many Degrassi fights seem to these days?

She may get drunk and kiss Dallas. I understand why shes a mess abut she also told Eli shes all in. Lying to your lover about something this horrbible is a big slap in the face to Eli and that big word is TRUST. If she can’t tell Eli about her harassment this relationship doomed. Also Eli hates lying. If Eclare breakup it maybe a good thing right now. If you only watch the show for Eclare , that means you’re not a true fan. Plus they’re other great characters on this show too, Peace Out.

I do not see a problem in watching the show just because you like a certain couple or you want them to get together. Some may just like a certain actor and that is completely okay. No need to say that some people aren’t “true fans”

  15. I would give this episode a B just for getting to see Imogen whack Marisol with a math book.

But it was better than that. We got a lot of insight—mostly of the sad kind—into Imogen’s background and why she’s a bit off-center. It was all wrapped up a little too tidily, but it was nice to see her make progress in her relationship with her mother.

The Katie story was most useful in providing a glimpse at Dallas’s vulnerable side. Then he lapsed back into jerkhood.

Becky-Adam should have been saved for a time when they might be on screen for more than 45 seconds. But it could be interesting.

    I give “Never, Ever” a B-plus.

  19. A-Plot Imogen’s plot was very interesting probably because we got a look at what her home life is. Since it was Imogen’s first A plot she did remarkably well. Not on the same level as Cam’s first A plot but still compelling. Part 1 did a great job keeping us engaged in her father’s dementia. This plot had one of those rare occurrences where the first part gave a “Go There” moment which was her dad running over the dog. It was heartbreaking seeing Imogen’s life almost collapse. Even the Fimogen scenes were tolerable despite my feelings that these two still have ZERO chemistry together. The only thing that was a bit of a letdown was the continuation of Imogen designing the set in Part 2 it just felt a bit uneven given the plot’s nature. The scene where she confided in her mother was refreshing and sad at the same time because she knew that her mother was all she had. Overall I give this plot an A-.

B-Plot Despite the fact that I was confused with how the promos focused on Katie’s plot rather than Imogen’s it was still surprisingly good. Even though I will say that Katie and Jake starting their relationship felt forced it was a plot device to start the rivalry between Katie and the hockey team. In a way I’m glad Dallas and the team ruined the garden because it is a prelude to next week’s episode “Sabotage” from what I gathered in the promo. Now to discuss Dallas, this guy has done an amazing job blending in with any character on the show. Watching him in this plot made me love and hate him at the same time. But then yet again Dallas always changes positions from bad guy to good guy and vice versa. The fact that he actually liked Katie and was heartbroken seeing her kiss Jake shows this guy has real emotions. Overall, I give this plot a B+.

C-Plot If there ever was a plot in Degrassi history that got the least amount of screen time this one would take the cake. I mean I know this plot was supposed to set up Becky and Adam but that’s it. Becky all of a sudden taking revenge on Eli by using charity seemed a bit out of character. Though I do like how Adam called her out on it, still this plot had no substance at all. It made it apparent throughout the episode that Adam has unfortunately fallen into the background on Degrassi. Also, Becky’s appearance throughout the episode was just annoying and it proves this character brings nothing but angst to the table. Overall, I give this plot a D+.

  20. I am surprised how thought out all the episodes are this season. Almost every single storyline has been great and if it is weaker, it is usually a setup for the next episode where it’s brilliant. I might get lots of haters for saying this but since degrassi is getting back into going all out in their plots, there needs to be something tragic that happen. We had the shooting with Rick and the JT incident, but both those were original degrassi characters. Those incidents affected the WHOLE school, and alot of the characters went through such dynamic changes and ended up having deeper storylines. I hate to say this, because I love Tristan, but I can see them doing a suicide with everything that has been happening in the last couple of years with the suicides amongst gay teenagers and The Trevor Project.

While Becky’s plot was a little lackluster, Dylan Everett, Sam Earle, and Cristine Prosperi delivered everything I love about this show. The writers are really stepping it up and while they’ve hit us close to home by taking some of our favorite characters away and making us break down crying with others, they make me happier than ever to see a graduating class go. I was never fond of Season 5, 7, or 9’s graduations and Season 11 was alright, but now more than ever have I grown fond of these characters and I will feel more satisfied that at least they hit home on some of the most integral characters before they had to go.

      1. Thats a really general statement, as a Christian growing up in a mostly Christian town I can tell you that you are wrong. Yes there are some extremists that uphold those views but it was not fair of you to make such a general statement like that with no proof to back it up. I love Degrassi but sometimes the way they portray their characters with Christian views is insulting. Darcy and Clare were both EXTREMELY judgmental when they first appeared on the show and only mellowed out in later seasons. Not all Christians are like Becky, there are even “Bible Thumping” Christians out there that wouldn’t share the views and the tactics that Becky and Luke use to justify their faith. It would just be nice for once to see Degrassi have a Christian character who didn’t feel elitist because of their faith and was open to all sexualities and lifestyles and only used God to make themselves a better person rather then have them trying to impose their views on others. This is what most real Christians are like anyway.

Also is anyone else impressed with the transformations of The Latest Buzz kids? Demetrius Joyette goes from a (presumably) gay fashion reporter to a homophobic jock, Justin goes from a jock to a handyman animal activist and Munro goes from having ADD and being excited about everything to wearing black in every episode and portraying a damaged artist. Family channel shows may be a joke sometimes but this season currently has 4 veterans and Charlotte Arnold was truly one of the best.

  26. I know a lot of people comment on not liking Cristine’s acting, but I thought she did a really good job, especially in part two of the episode. I like that she’s able to go from peppy optimistic and different to completely intense and whacking Marisol with her math book. She was just trying to knock some math in her. Lmao. Marisol needed a knocking… and I really thought that she had changed a little with character growth after she started dating Mo. Guess not. She was making fun of Imogen’s dad showing up to school in his bath robe and pajamas, but I personally found it MORE creepy of her to stand outside their car in the pouring rain and secretly take a picture of them. Just sayin’.

I super liked Fiona’s supportive girlfriend behavior. She saw to it that Imogen’s set got finished even after Imogen gave her a farewell slight brush off. Does anyone else think that shows some character growth? Considering Fiona is so dependent on others. She didn’t just fall apart… She just kept moving on and being supportive of someone else. I still really like her character no matter what other people are saying.

As for Jatie… I just dídn’t have much interest in what was going on with them. I have to say that I really like Dallas though, and he didn’t seem like the type of guy that would destroy a garden over something like that. Dunno.

My favourite part, her waiting in the hospital for her mom…that was just heartbreaking. And Kyle, we as critics don’t have to do better, she’s the actress payed to play her role…we’re not. But yeah, great episode!

        Like

      3. Kyle: im not judging her on how hard she couldn’t or can cry. I judged her on how much i wasn’t affected by her during the scene that she finds volta. As an actress she was suppose to make me feel something, but what made me feel was actually seeing the dead teddy bear. i watch that scene and just lose focus on where its going because i feel it was bad bad acting. However i do think part 2 was a lot better. There was the scene where she was hiding anything dangerous and the way she stood in the hospital waiting for her mom that just made me so sad (the reaction i was suppose to have when she saw volta dead).

I still feel like cristine’s acting isnt up to great but there are been worse, i still really enjoy her character though.

Katie was being a total jerk, but if Dallas did actually destroy the garden, it would have been a HUGE over-reaction. If you watch 19:05-19:20 you will see that Dallas was honestly confused. LUKE on the other hand… I think Dallas may have told his teammates about Katie, and they took it into their hands to get back at her, because after all, she did destroy their pep rally. Also, I for one, am very happy K.C is gone. I never liked him as a character. I am enjoying how Becky’s character is developing. 30. I really enjoyed Dallas and Katie this week. They balance each other out and seem like an interesting matchup. Somehow, though, I don’t think he personally vandalized the garden. That seemed low for him and out of character. Opinions?

  32. Dallas is such a cutie. He is probably my favorite Newbie and the hottest guy on Degrassi to date from Season 10-12….Just had to throw that out there :D

But yeah this episode was GREAT….I didn’t care for Rusty Cage(aside from Cam) but i enjoyed Imogen as she really is my favorite female character and I am glad to see more from here where she is not tied into a plot related to another main character(Eli, Claire, Fiona).

I adored the Dallas/Katie/Jake plotline because we got to see a different side to Dallas…We saw a brief glimpse at a soft side with Fiona that one time, He has shown that while he is a bit of a player and a jerk he is still respectful enough to Drew’s mom to call Drew out on his behavior and this time we see that he is vulnerable and capable of being hurt when he likes someone

. Jake is cool…While not my favorite character as they have done next to nothing with his character, what little they do with him and show of him on the show I enjoy. Katie in early season 11 was great, latter Season 11 meh and the beginning of Season 12 downright dreadful but i am loving the way that we get to see more of season 11 early katie where she is more straightforward now.

Becky….as a gay male, I actually enjoy Becky because there are a lot of people like here. Not all Christians are like here(or Luke) but I do enjoy seeing the way they portray her as it relates to characters like adam and tristan. Adam was such an interesting character in Season 10 but the way the writer’s treat him….I don’t like Adam simply because his plots since the radio show with Dave and I believe the body image issues have not been appealing at all and this was yet another blah Adam plot.

  35. Great follow-up episode. I totally agree with the grades given. I guess my only gripe is Imogen ONLY hitting Marisol with her binder. Dear god, I wanted to see Imogen knock her out. A shame how immature Marisol acted in these past 2 episodes as I thought she had matured a bit.

Really excited for the final week, though hopefully it’s not all rushed and not all hype as the last few season finales since All Falls Down have been known to be.

  36. The only thing that would’ve made this episode (both parts) better for me is if Becky and Adam had the B plot like I assumed they were going to. I didn’t think Katie’s plot was terrible, but the lack of screen time for Becky and Adam disappointed me. Anyways, Imogen’s storyline was BY FAR my favorite plot of the season so far. And the best, in my opinion. Degrassi writers are seriously delivering this season.

  38. One things that Degrassi has been great at, is creating diversity in the show. From LGBT characters, to indian characters, very, very conservative characters and we just found out that Zig is ukranian and mother is an immigrant. One thing that Degrassi attempted but didn’t have a strong enough actor for is an asian character. I think it is important that there is one in the next couple of seasons because we are losing Ali and their is such a big asian population in Canada. Even if it’s the girl who played Melindas best friend on How to Be Indie. Also each season, a new character and a reacuring character storylines are kind of put on the backburner. I hope that luke, Adam and Tori have storylines. Especially Luke, since we don’t really know anything about the kid.

  39. I’m really looking forward to more Becky and Adam. I found them cute, but I know nothing is going to happen with them–at least for a long while considering Becky. It’d be nice if Adam gets a girlfriend before he’s off the show and I found Becky’s crush cute. I’m can’t wait to see what happens with them next week! I also look forward to Becky starting to “mellow” out as I believe somebody put it.

That’s going to be a slow process though, but if the writing continues to be as good as it has been this season so far, then it’ll be worth it.

Christine’s acting was outstanding in part two of this episode. Imogen’s entire plot was heartbreaking this week. The scene with the dog was shocking but completely necessary in my opinion to show the seriousness of her father’s illness. I thought the writers did a great job with this one. The plot between Katie/Jake/Dallas was pretty good. There’s something about the character of Mike Dallas that intrigues me. Every scene he’s been in so far has made me want to learn more about him. His character is so unlikeable you almost have to like him. I realize this plot was revolved around Katie, but is it weird that I’m more interested to see where Dallas goes as character? Jatie = predictable. Last but not least was the Becky and Adam plot. I agree that this story seemed incomplete. I’m interested to see where things go however I’m scared for Adam. I don’t know if he can handle getting his heart broken again. Becky can’t be trusted!

On a side note, i’m surprised Dallas even entertained ideas about Katie. He lives with Drew a.k.a Katie’s ex boyfriend. Way to follow the bro code bro.

His went from being a jack ass who got hazed, to a cheating jerk, to Biancas protector/abandoner, to a MMA fighter, to a lying skeeze two timing boyfriend, who stole Katies virginity……..oh yea and now he has a brain injury, thinks he’s stupid and wants to work at a cellphone booth at the local mall for the rest of his life……..???? Yet they still have more to write for him…………..I want to know who Luke Bylik is screwing at Epitome to stay on because his character is so unlikable that I cant imagine why on earth the writers shove him down our throats each season. Damn at least give Conor a fucking A-plot if your gonna have him stay on the show because in terms of “Having nothing left to write for a character” he has had zero chracter growth/plots since season 8 which was like 4 seasons ago. His ass technically should have been sent to the degrassi abyss from long time.

It’s funny how I look at the grades after I’ve read the article and to randomly see “Incomplete” at the bottom, haha!

I really like how Degrassi is kind of changing it up by settling one major plot, then leaving us anticipating the next one with the C plots (i.e Adam and Becky). Can’t wait for next week and I’m curious how Becky is going to try to “cure” Adam :P

The only thing that got me interested in Katie and Jake’s plot is Dallas (shocker there). I want there to be a twist that turns out Dallas wasn’t the one who trashed it (that’ll be interesting to see) because if he really did trash the place, that would just lose points for him and then the story would be boring because everyone’s anticipated.

Btw: Can we have a REAL Jake plot soon? Not just a backup guy for the main characters like Zane was (oh how I miss you Zane :c♥). Muchas gracias.

I liked how Dalas made it really obvious that he makes himself to be bigger than he is when Katie said he probably had tones of girls after him and he made a face like ‘I have no girls after me, thats the problem’. Makes you realise how different Dalas and Cam are. Cam could get any girl he wanted coz he’s supposedly going to the NHL, but he doesn’t want them coz they don’t really care about him (unlike Maya), while Dalas can’t get any girls coz he’s not going to the NHL and all he wants is to be in Cam’s position.

    BAD IDEA.

Not only am I in pain over Clare, Cam, and Imogen’s plots, dealing with K.C./Smearle being written off is too much to bare. Plus that promo?! My head is spinning right now.

All I can say right now is that Imogen’s plot might be one of my favorite Degrassi plots ever. No exaggeration.

This season is so quality right now. With the exception of Drew/Fiona. I don’t think I have to read the comments to believe that everyone thought their roommate squabbles were lame.

    1. Yes Imogen’s plot is definitely up there with the old TNG plots. I’m really loving the old school spin they are putting on a lot of these issue based plots. It reminds me so much of the old days XD. I think though the Boiling Point did a better job with the old school kind of plots and making them feel relevant today versus how these plots this season are like ripping straight from the old school formula. Both are good ways but I still consider the Boiling Point like my favorite season in a long time with this one so far, running a close second.
