PLOT A SUMMARYAlli learns that Simpson submitted her science research to someone at MIT, who is impressed with Alli’s work and wants to meet her.  Alli also finds out that she has enough credits to graduate a year early.  Dave isn’t excited about the possibility of that happening, but Alli assures him there’s a slim chance she’ll actually get in.  Alli meets with the woman from MIT, and is offer a full scholarship as a research student.  Her parents are proud, but Alli isn’t sure if she wants to do it because she’ll be far away from everyone.  Afterward, Alli realizes that she missed a couple of birth control pills, and starts to slowly freak out because she and Dave had unprotected sex.  She buys a pregnancy test, but her mom catches her with it.  Alli says it’s Jenna’s, who reluctantly takes the heat for it.  Alli tells Dave she might be pregnant, and at first he’s shocked yet assumes Alli will no longer be trying to get into MIT.

Alli is convinced she’s pregnant and is frustrated because it‘s too soon for any test to confirm it.  Meanwhile, Dave shares his plan for the future that includes them having the baby, her deferring for a year and then them going to college together.  Alli finally visit’s a health center to get tests done, and Clare is there to support her.  Though Dave wants Alli to keep the baby, Clare reminds Alli that she has multiple options and the decision is hers.  Alli finds out that deferring the offer from MIT isn’t an option, so at the celebration her family throws her she announces that she does indeed plan to go to MIT.  Dave gets upset and lashes out at her because he feels she’s choosing school over him.  The next day Dave apologizes, but Alli tells him that though she hopes they can hang out, her schoolwork and research take priority over their relationship.

I don’t think there was ever a moment (even going back to the first promo where Alli just said the word “pregnant”), where I thought Alli was actually pregnant.  Not every storyline has some deep, hidden meaning, or a fancy twist at the end.  Some storylines, with the use of a tiny bit of logical sense, can be telegraphed from a mile away.

This is one of them.

Degrassi spent Season 10 dealing with Jenna’s pregnancy.  Season 11 was spent dealing with parenting, and eventually adoption.  The only option here would’ve been the option Alli chose: abortion.  Oh what a bind the networks would or wouldn’t be put in if it came down to that.  Like Manny in “Accidents Will Happen,” Alli would’ve been resolute in her decision, but in the end she didn’t have to be.  Regardless of the generic “Degrassi is always doing the same things when it comes to pregnancy” comments, they did something different here.  Emma’s “pregnancy scare” at the end of Season 6 felt too contrived to count for anything.  This plot is obviously setting us up for Alli’s earlier-than-expected departure, but oh how relatable are the feelings of scaring yourself into believing you’re pregnant, or you’re sick, or anything that comes to your health in general.  It’s magnified when you also feel the fate of your entire future is on the line, as it did with Alli.

It seemed Alli was willing to compromise with Dave at some point (depending on how the pregnancy ruling played out), but it never really seemed like she was interested in giving up her opportunity to go to MIT.  Dave acts selfishly here trying to plan out their future and lashing out at Alli after she announces her decision, but it’s the kind of selfish that is oddly understandable.  All he sees is in their future is them being together.  It doesn’t matter what she’d leave for, her going off somewhere means to him that whatever thing she left to do is more important to her than him.

And to be honest, Dave is right.  MIT is more important to Alli than their relationship, and it took the pregnancy scare for her to realize that and fully commit, even at the expense of Bhandurner.  Relationships on Degrassi are notorious for making girls a weak shell of their single selves.  Not this time around; Alli’s learned from her mistakes, and looking beyond the hallways and teen angst of Degrassi.

PLOT B SUMMARYThe hockey team plans to watch the girls’ dance practice after school, but Cam says he can’t because he has to video chat with his “girlfriend” back home.  Dallas figures out Cam lied, and Cam admits he feels uncomfortable because the team makes fun of him.  Dallas tells him they do it because they like him, and invites Cam to hang with the team at the mall so he can show them who he really is.  Things are going well until Dallas challenges Cam to go talk to Bianca.  He stumbles over his words and embarrasses himself by asking Bianca for sex, to which she responds by throwing a drink in his face.

It’s game day and Cam is feeling anxious.  After Mo makes a comment about Cam’s clover underwear, Maya comes to Cam’s defense, but Cam suddenly snaps at her.  Cam splashes his face with water in the washroom, but realizes he’s in the ladies’ room when Bianca walks in.  In tears, Cam apologizes to Bianca and tells her that he feels alone and his family is far away.  Bianca tells Cam to not listen to what the hockey guys say and hang out with people who don’t suck.  Dallas and the guys tell Cam to sit with them in the back on the way to the game, but he chooses to sit up front by himself.  The team wins with the help of Cam scoring and at the post-game meal Maya walks into the restaurant.  Cam apologizes for yelling at her and asks her to hang out sometime, and she agrees.

Cam’s plot led to a hilarious moment where in an awkward conversation with Bianca, he asks her for sex.  I still laugh every time I think about that moment, but the bigger picture of Cam’s dilemma is no joke, even if the hockey team thinks it is.

The hockey team has been established as a group that is constantly joking around with each other.  I love how this plot addresses that teasing can be just as hurtful when it comes from within your own social group, as it would be if a stranger were doing it.  It also shows how you can feel alone, even if you belong to a social group.  Cam is awkward and does not fit into the stereotypical “jock” mold that the rest of the hockey boys do.  The fact that he’s brought up multiple times that he’s far away from his family shows us an interesting look at the anxiety that plagues him.  It becomes abundantly clear how different he is from the rest of them when he responds to Dallas wanting him to go with the team to the mall to pick up girls by saying, “Well that’s night before a game.”

Dallas talks about how talented Cam is, but that Cam is “wasting it,” and while we know he’s talking about using his athlete status to get girls, Cam has no idea what that means.  Cam is the male version of Maya, and we’re watching a couple of young, inexperienced characters enter a new realm where they will start figuring themselves out.  Cam and Maya doing that together seems quite charming and appropriate.

PLOT C SUMMARYWhile everyone is working on their university applications, Jake reveals that he has no plans for school; instead, he wants to work for his dad’s business right out of high school.  Jake is adamant about Martin Construction going green, but Glen wants Jake to focus on school instead.  At school Jake witnesses Luke throwing an aluminum can in a regular trashcan and confronts him about it.  The two get into a fight and end up in detention.  Jake is frustrated because he can’t get his dad to listen to him about his ideas for going green, so Katie tells Jake they should show his dad he knows what he’s doing by working on a project at Degrassi.  They come up with the idea to build a garden on the roof, which Principal Simpson approves.  However, things are rough when water starts spraying uncontrollably from the valves and Jake can’t stop it.  He eventually has to give in and call his dad to fix it.  Glen doesn’t want Jake to be in the construction business forever, but Jake tells him that’s exactly what he wants to do.  Glen just wants Jake to keep his options open, so he tells Jake they can test out some of his environmentally friendly ideas if he also applies to university.

The gist of Jake’s plot is simple:  he doesn’t want to go to college.  He wants to team up with his dad and do construction for the rest of his life, but Glen wants Jake to keep his options open.  However, the entire premise of Jake suddenly channeling his inner Emma Nelson seemed a silly route to get the point across.

Everything about it seemed to be a random mash of ideas thrown together.  Hey, let’s make Jake environmentally conscious to the point where he gets violently angry with a complete stranger (Luke).  Then let’s have Jake randomly try and build a garden on top of the roof of Degrassi, while a black-haired Katie tags along for the green ride.  The only thing missing is Jake and Katie wearing matching “Captain Planet & the Planeteers” vintage t-shirts.  While Jake does show that he is very intelligent and is passionate about construction, that point gets drowned under a soggy roof of mediocrity.

  2. Cam’s plot is great, but I’m still a bit confused on what they’re doing with Jake and his newfound love of the environment. He did have some interesting moments, though.

Chances are Alli’s probably not pregnant, but, if she is, she’d probably get an abortion, which seems like it would be really interesting.

    4. I don’t think it’s a newfound love. Jake has been an outdoorsman from the very beginning– what I thought was weird was Glen Martin asking his son when he became such a “tree hugger”. Jake expressed a love for the environment in Nowhere to Run when he’s talking about going up to the cabin and all the outdoorsy amenities. It makes sense that he would want to protect the environment– though beating someone up over it is a little rash. I guess Degrassi is trying to prove Jake is the number one man at the Brawney Academy…

Jake: This plot seemed very random to me. Last time we saw him, he was just a rebound guy for Katie and even before then, he had a “situation” with Jenna and Clare. I hope this is just a filler plot because Jake is just bouncing from one place to another, but unless Jake has some type of background for his “love of the environment”, the writers should start thinking about making his stories connect somehow. At the same time, it’s good to have an outlook on people who aren’t planning to just move away to college and actually have a plan for their future that they will enjoy. Hmm.. at least he’s cute <.<

Cam: Totally believable! I can see that Cam only really has a love for hockey, but not so much with the team. He is still very innocent, but because of his surroundings and his reputation, he has to do the best he can to fit in. Plus tomorrow's episode gets me really excited when they showed him in the girl's bathroom. He's making a great appearance on this show so far and I can't wait to see him tomorrow!
"Hey, you wanna get out of here? Have some… sex?" xD

Alli: Girl you have done it again! Miss good girl makes a bad mistake. Honestly, from the last episode, it was very stupid I think to rush into sex when 1. Your parents will be back in 15 minutes 2. You're not completely prepared. I mean come on girl, you're on Degrassi. Sex = Pregnancy/STDs/Bad Rep. Of course we know she didn't know that she would be on her way to MIT on a full scholarship days from this happening, but she is way to smart for her to let this happen again. Like Kary said, I don't believe she's really pregnant. (Plus I was surprised that Degrassi would give out such huge information when showing the week's promo, but after seeing this episode, I'm not convinced.) I think its mainly just a scare. What I'm hoping for is her to not be pregnant, but we'll see after the test. (PS: Same on you for blaming Jenna! She better get you back! lol)

As for Alli, I’m certain it will be a pregnancy scare. And Jake… just GTFO. At least give him a real plot. His character died when Clare and him became brother and sister. Sucks. :( All good characters: Fiona, Imogen, and now Jake, might as well head to the Degrassi Bermuda Triangle along with Wesley.

  11. Alli throwing Jenna under the bus like that was wrong. I would have opened up a can of bitch slap on Alli if I were Jenna. Alli really needs to stop doing suck stupid things for a girl as smart as she is. Dave and Alli are a great couple, but I’m pretty sure Alli’s going to screw it up somehow.

I love Cam so much. He’s just awesome. His storyline is completely believable and relateable. Plus, those sad little faces he makes just melt my heart. Dallas is such a dick for making Cam hit on Bianca. I think Cam just needs a little Maya in his life. He obviously cares what people think and Maya doesn’t. Perfect pairing.

Jake. WTF? I mean, I know he loves nature and stuff – but really? Get into a fight with Luke over a can? I don’t get what the writers are trying to prove with this storyline. The only thing I get from it is that if Jake and Emma had an environmental-off, Jake would destroy Emma. He’s so passionate about the trees and the oceans and the dolphins. Emma’s passionate about Jay in the ravine. Kidding. Haha. Um….I just don’t get the point of this plot. Oh well. Maybe part two will round it out.

  12. Alli……. You had sex like 6 days ago and you already think your pregnant…………???!!!
Don’t work like that, it takes more like a month to actually show symptoms, its all in her head but overall it kept me entertained. Cam, I feel sorry for, just trying to fit in with the guys and get with Maya, who happens to be so completely oblivious, its not even funny. He is not gay! Its pretty obvious he has a crush on Maya so people need to hop off that closeted thing, that’s not what it is and its erking me.
Jake…….??????!!!!!!###%^&@~ WTF WAS THAT! Seriously if you don’t have good material to write for a certain character then leave them be and use a character who can actually carry a good plot. Jake is the epitome of useless in the show right now, they gave Wesley the boot but kept him? He has absolutely no purpose, Zigs random best friend from the previous episode was more useful than him in this episode. Now that he isn’t with Clare, its like the writers don’t know what to do with him but they need to find a way to get him into the showdown. So its all, lets make him environmentally friendly and get into a fight with a hockey star over a can of pop…….. From the looks of it he doesn’t even know how to fight, I saw two twelve year old girls go at each other harder then the way Jake attacked Luke. I literally laughed during that whole confrontation and isn’t Luke suppose to be Christian??? Not really getting the good Christian vibe from him, all I’m getting is that he is a jerk. Jake alone could never carry a Plot A because an episode that revolved around him would turn me off completely. If he is in an episodes Main Plot it’s because he is a love interest to one of the leading ladies (Clare, Katie, Alli….etc)

  13. I really like where these different bullying plots are going. Cam’s plot with the other hockey guys proves that bullying takes many forms–it’s not just “nerds” or gay kids who are targets of bullying. Sometimes, even a handsome young athlete can be a target.
I also like how the writers are addressing the stigma against teenage guys who are not total horndogs. I doubt that Cam is questioning his sexuality. Rather, he’s feeling pressure from his teammates to be something he isn’t. The fact that some guys are not girl-crazy pigs doesn’t mean that they’re closeted, and I really like that the writers have finally introduced a male character to illustrate this.

  14. Also, I can understand Jake being into “green” living. We still don’t know a lot about him, as we only got a tiny glimpse of who he is when he ended things with Clare. And even then, he was used mostly as a secondary character. Now we’re getting to see more of his personality and likes and dislikes.
Seeing as how he’s not a city boy, and grew up in a rural area, the idea of him being an environmental nut isn’t very farfetched. Still, I wish he and Luke had gotten into a fight over something a little less trivial…

Luke will yell get off my sister and try to pull Clare off of Becky but jake will stop him saying noooo u get off my sister so they will scrap then Katie’s going to cheer on jake while Jenna cheers on Luke then Katie fights Jenna then everyyyyyybodyyy starts fighting!!!!

  17. I’m surprised that people haven’t noticed all the subtle signs that Cam is quite possibly gay, and it goes back to the “Bite Your Tongue” promo. At that time, we did not know exactly what the whole “star-crossed lovers” thing meant. We didn’t know that Cam’s first scene would include Tristan, and we especially didn’t know that Tristan would go on to play “Jules.”

Add this to the many things that Cam and “Maya” had in common on FaceRange, and it becomes much clearer why Cam and Maya were pulled away from each other in the promo. Maya is a metaphor for Tristan in the promo. And when all the chaos breaks loose, (everything that’s not supposed to happen), Cam and “Maya” are back together again. Even when you look closely at the hockey team’s attack on Tristan, you can see Cam is not too thrilled with what’s happening, but they don’t make it very obvious at all, on purpose.

Another major factor which appears that nobody knows about is the possible link between Cam and the NHL’s “You Can Play” program, which was created by Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke after his son Brendan, an openly gay hockey player, was killed in a car accident. Homophobia was something that Brendan had to face in his daily life, and the main focus of every one of Cam’s story lines has been how he is so uncomfortable around his homophobic teammates.

From Cam’s first scene, I never got the notion that Cam liked Maya, at all. I think Maya will come to like him, but I think that’s as far as it will go. The reason why Cam friended Maya on FaceRange was most likely because he knew that she has a gay friend. If he had friended Tristan, that would have been way too obvious.

If Cam is indeed gay, it will take a lot of time for people to accept him into the hockey community. With Tristan being in the play and Cam on a homophobic team, I believe that these two are connected and will be able to kill two birds with one stone. And it sure would bring a lot of awareness to a great cause that the Burke family has created in order to make the hockey community a more accepting place. Having several NHL’ers supporting the cause doesn’t hurt either…

      1. I think this storyline is less about Degrassi, and more about society. I’m sure the Degrassi writers in Toronto are well aware of the You Can Play program. And with Dylan’s 2006 film, it all seems to add up. People need to think less about Camaya, and more about raising awareness of the Burke family’s great cause. Peace!

    3. This is a well thought out theory, but I still tend to think the romance is going to be Maya and Cam. Not only do they get ready to kiss in the “Bite Your Tongue” stargazers sequence, but near the end, when all is chaos, Cam and Maya are embracing while the storm goes on around them. Two boy-girl embracing sequences don’t add up to a gay romance for me.

Somewhere down the line, I think Cam and Tristan are going to become good friends because, as the Facerange chat revealed, they had a lot in common. And we can see (but just barely) in Bite Your Tongue, Cam is trying to protect Tristan from bullying. Makes me think Cam will ultimately take Tristan’s side against the homophobles.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

    4. what you said actually makes a lot of sense and I can definitely see your point. However, I don’t think that actually true, at least for right now (though if it is, and it’s cam who actually ends up trying to commit suicide and not tristen like it’s been hinted by various people then wow do you have an eye for analyzing!). At least what I see is bullying from within a team plus being homesick adding to make a really depressed and socially awkward cam. Wow if this cam is gay, im just thinking about how he could be the one to try suicide and maybe tristen stops him because there is suppose to be a huge scene when the play is about to take place or something involving tristen…

Also i don’t get why people say Jake’s interest in the environment is stupid, trivia, and stuff. I don’t really think he got in a fight over a can, i think it had to deal more with the fact that he was frustrated that his dad has no faith in him. He’s motivated about working and has a plan, being told it’s dumb by various sources is harsh and he probably feels insecure and like crap. Plus i don’t know about you but i have had various interests that have sprung outta nowhere.

It’s not like he had to have had some big vision of the world dying or anything like that. I do however feel like instead of him trying to go straight to work he could go to a trade school or something like that. However i don’t know anything about manual labor types of jobs and I think all should go to some sort of school (it’s called a degree in environmental engineering jake!) or i dunno, i’m very ignorant when it comes to these types of things.

    5. I think you are trying to see something that really isn’t there. Romeo and Juliet as the chosen play aligns with the Showdown theme of the summer block: the whole play is about conflict and the ramifications it has on the people caught in the middle. Cam quite clearly likes Maya because he takes every opportunity to talk to her, and IGNORES Tristan when he does so. Tristan is always the initiator of their interactions and Cam always reacts lukewarm at best. If Cam was really interested in Tristan, he would have tried in some way to reciprocate Tristan’s advances, even in secret, and would not have gotten as upset with Tristan for impersonating Maya.

      2. I wonder if Tristan wasn’t in the picture or had a crush on him, if it would cross anyone’s mind that Cam might be gay? Before anyone saw a Tristan/Cam connection, everyone was on the Camaya band wagon. Then as soon as Tristan develops a crush on someone, BOOM, Cam is gay and will ultimately fall in love with Tristan. No, sometimes gay kids, like myself, develop crushes on guys/girls who we see to be possibly gay, but most often is not, but we pursue them anyway out of the desire to pair off like all of our other friends. But when you try to make someone like you who doesn’t or may even be confused, it usually blows up in your face and does nothing for anyone involved. That’s why even if Cam is in the closet or whatever, I still would not want Tristan and Cam to get together because it would most likely be a trainwreck for the both of them.

  18. Jake’s story was so pointless. Since when is he interested in the environment all of a sudden? The writers literally don’t have material for him, unless it involves a relationship, and even with Clare, it still failed. I wasn’t interested in getting to know Jake when he first appeared on the show, and I’m still not now. There is nothing likable about him.

Katie, on the other hand, has become more interesting. I still don’t understand her interest in Jake, but it’s better than seeing her sulking or seeking revenge on Drew and Bianca.

I wonder what’s up with Campbell. Last week, I could care less, now, I’m interested. The scene with Bianca was random, yet funny.

Alli’s “pregnancy” is probably just a scare. The whole MIT thing seems so rushed and random. Her parents are pretty irritating and pushy about her going away. It’s not going to kill MIT or Alli’s parents to let her wait one more year before deciding to go to university. And Alli blaming Jenna for the test wasn’t right at all.

  19. Campbell has to be my favorite character, mainly because he is ME. I agree with everything Nina Shewchuk mentioned, because it’s so annoying having people assume he’s gay. Now, we don’t know for sure, but I can guarantee he’s not. Everything Cam is going through, I’m going through. I like girls, but I’m not a horndog. When I say I want to focus more on my school work and getting into college athletics, I get looked at funny. When I miss a chance to go to a party and get “laid”, I get made fun of. People think I’m gay because I’m “too nice” to girls, and I’m still a virgin. God forbid a male at 16 be a virgin and want to focus on things more important than knocking up random chicks and treating them terribly. I like to treat girls with respect, and some guys don’t understand that, and surprisingly some girls aren’t use to that. Not only in the “gay assumption” aspect am I like Cam, but it’s obvious Cam has anxiety. Just like me. Some people just don’t fit in with the “jocks”. It’s annoying people are that closed minded to think that he’s gay, but I think the whole point of Cam is to call out all you people thinking he’s gay, when it’s nothing more than a nice guy with a little social anxiety just trying to focus on his hockey.

Maybe that will be the case for a character in the future. But it’s Degrassi, there’s always something underneath.

An addition to those who comment about Bianca had no right to react that way to Cam, has no clue how to react when someone bluntly asks for sex. That’s rude, and inappropriate. Besides, it is JUST WATER (or a clear liquid). It will wash out. Things could have been worse.

However, seeing the promo, I question why would Bianca would state, “Are you stalking me?” When it was clear that SHE walked in to the restroom and saw him there.

P.S.- Dylan Everett was in a 2006 film Breakfast With Scot which revolved around a gay hockey player for the Leafs, so the role may have interested him since he’s older now :) It’s all about thinking outside of the box!

  22. So I have been reading a lot of the comments and there are two things that I keep seeing that are bothering me. First, I highly doubt that any of the hockey guys are seriously accusing Cam of being gay. They were clearly just trying to get him to do something. Guys, especially jerks like those hockey guys, say stuff like that all of the time. They are just trying to get to each other that’s all. Second, a lot of people keep complaining about Alli thinking she’s pregnant after only having sex a couple of days ago. I believe that her fear is realistic. Not only did she miss pills but she found out that she could also have been ovulating at that time (as they clearly pointed out on the show). Obviously she doesn’t know for sure that she is (they clearly stated that it was too early on the show) but her fear is realistic. Also, Im sure her “symptoms” are all in her head and the show isn’t actually trying to say that people have pregnancy symptoms that early. On one last note, I thought part one was very good (minus Jake’s sudden change into being a tree-hugger).

And since Cam is a part of the hockey team and in some way associated with Romeo and Jules (his connection with Tristan), Cam being accepted in addition to the play going over well with everyone will create a feeling of unity throughout the entire school. Riley’s plot did not touch as many people as these ones will.

One of the things that irks me most about Degrassi is that they love breaking up perfectly good couples like Bhandurner. Not every couple in high school breaks up. Even if they do, some get back together for good. Some even stay together all throughout high school without taking a break.

      1. yes ur right but its a tv show and if a couple stayed together and for the whole time we, as in most of the viewers, would probably get bored with them. Even if they did have relationship drama to deal with, much more interesting to watch them break up and then watch how sad/depressed/vengeful/frustrated they get. And see how they long for each other from afar and don’t forget the awkward convos they get to have.

See so much more interesting when they are ripped apart, then we are so much happier when they reunite.

I’ll be really shocked if they alli leaves at the end of the season, Melinda (i’m pretty sure) is the 2nd most followed person on twitter only after munro. While i’m not crazy about her, clearly more than 70,000 people or something like that are. This actually makes me proud of degrassi, it’s like they aren’t afraid to get rid of someone with a large fan base (either that or most likely melinda decided she didn’t want to be back for season 13).

I know melinda does some other tv show, being indy? Does she still do that?

So I’m sorry, but there won’t be involvement with Tristan this season, not to say it won’t happen. I do think Degrassi will do the gay hockey player story eventually but cam’s story tackles a whole nother issue in hockey. I think the issue is more of the reactions of hockey team then it is about cam. I am glad that they are tackling this issue because its one that I am very well aware about. My cousin is on the hockey team, and they make “gay” jokes to get under peoples skin, he eventually had enough of it one day and got into a fight for the first time. Also hockey is cams life, he basically doesn’t have anything else. His family isn’t there and he doesn’t really have friends.

What I find to be the biggest factor in all of this is the presence, or lack there of, of Tristan. And you know that the three of them will revisit their earlier ordeal. I can see not wanting to get physical with a girl. But a simple little kiss? Weird. Weird, indeed. Still not convinced he’s straight, just trying to get on his team’s good side. Can’t wait to see Maya’s reaction to such a quick retreat from a kiss. Unless he’s in love with his hockey stick…?

P.S.- Nobody of Cam’s height will ever make it to the NHL. AHL should be his goal. The Worcester Sharks need offense!

Worst episode(s) of S12 so far. The Alli pregnancy thing was lame. We’re burned out on the teenage pregnancy scares, writers. Dave is selfish, blahblah. This plot was boring as sin, especially compared to the other episodes we’ve gotten so far.

The Cam/Maya/Bianca thing was semi-interesting, but was still, tired. It just felt like an unnecessary reiteration that Cam is being pressured by the team. Cam crying in the girl’s bathroom seemed random, but at least it gave this episode a sliver of entertainment value.

…are they serious with the Jake storyline? Jake is meant to be a secondary character, please don;t attempt to give him depth. ESPECIALLY if it’s a seemingly random storyline about the environment. Yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwn. So lame.

The first 4 episodes of S12 so far have that Boiling Point-esque quality of impending doom that I enjoyed. Several overly dramatic, yet somewhat unpredictable, storylines that intertwine and build up and reach an entertaining climax. I hope next week is better. This is some serious Season 8 mediocrity right hurr.

  38. I don’t get why people keep repeating that the pregnancy thing has been done before. So? Yeah it has been done before but last time I checked this happens to A LOT of girls in high school so only covering the issue once from one point of view would be dumb. Not every issue has to have some big twist, I actually thought they did a good job of showing how some girls will get extremely paranoid with a pregnancy scare.

they keep changing it, it’s a wheel of different reactions and different circumstances which makes the plot different. It was really cool to see how Alli thought about her future, about how she couldn’t just think about Dave, and about how she learned from her mistake. Most girls when they get a pregnancy scare just keep having sex and are more careful initially, with most getting careless after a while. It shows how much alli has grown as a character that she decided that she wanted to focus on school and her dreams even if it does sound cold, when at the beginning she was brainless and just thought boysboysboysboysboys. Pretty much doing anything for a guy.

  39. My goodness. I’m sorry, but I could hardly enjoy this episode.

Alli’s plot felt like a massive build up to…absolutely nothing. Especially when you consider that her mind was sort of made up for her the moment it turned out that she wasn’t pregnant. Throughout the plot, I kept thinking, “Okay, this is set-up, there’s still more.” But no. And I feel like both Dave and Alli were being very unreasonable — Dave for not being supportive, and Alli for suddenly treating Dave like he meant nothing to her.

Jake…geez, it’s great that they bothered to give him his own material. But I just couldn’t get interested. The concept of this plot is great; it sounds fair on paper. But its execution was poor, from the Jake/Luke fight to the random Jatie moment on the roof (or rather, Katie’s existence in the episode period).

The Cam plot saves the episode from being trash to me. Nothing more needs to be said about it, I agree with what everyone has been saying. Except that no, I do not think Cam — or any of the hockey team members for that matter — are gay.

  40. Okay, Clare and the abortion suggestion:

They are setting up the difference between Clare and Becky. A difference we already know, but needs reinforcing especially this season. It’s the same difference between Clare and Darcy, and Darcy with the rest of Friendship Club:

Clare’s rules are of her’s, for her and only for her and anyone else following a similar religious and moral code. In that she won’t let others make choices so grandly as to remove choice from individuals. She probably, in Alli’s place, would never consider an abortion.

Becky’s rules are absolute. Gay is wrong, Transgender is wrong, Abortion is wrong, Pre-marital sex is wrong. They are wrong for everyone, and anyone that does ANY of them should be shown they are wrong and saved.

    Anyway, onto the episode proper:
I… was glad at the end it was a scare, and most of Alli’s symptoms were in her head, and it was mostly the argument of Dave’s desires for the future vs. Alli’s. Alli wants to do something for the world, make her mark, do what she cares about. Dave’s only desire for the future is Alli, he has no other plans so far, which is entirely believable.

They balanced Alli’s interactions pretty well between both Clare and Jenna, which is good for a plot like this. I didn’t get really attached because Alli isn’t one of my favorite characters. I will say I was glad a KID TALKED TO THEIR PARENTS even if it wasn’t on screen (Dave and his folks) and NOTHING TERRIBLE HAPPENED.

Cam’s plot is great build for Cam’s state of mind, even if we didn’t see a lot of the real him with all the breakdowns. His isolation was palpable in the air this set, it was pretty refreshing, actually. We’ve had LOTS of female characters completely fail to cope with flirting, Cam’s the first guy to do it without much in the way of making it orientation issues… yet. I don’t think Cam’s gay, but I won’t rule out bi. The main thing is he can’t cope with it all, and his team.

Now then, the problem child of the ep. The problem with the Jake plot is mostly one of plot points to move the narrative. The suddenly eco-friendly Jake came from left field, and was mostly to give the promos a good shot of boys fighting and get Jake and Katie in the same room. The point of the plot was still solid, every kid feels they don’t live up to their parents designs. Just… the added ‘drama’ didn’t help it too much. I do hope the tussle comes up later, in another plot of people vs. Ice Hounds.

She was always so loving to Dave, caring to him and even introduced her parents to him (which obviously shows that she feels strongly for him) and now she did a total 180. I didn’t like the ending of this episode at all. I wish if the writers were a least going to end Bhandurner, they would have done it in a progressive manner rather than just ending them in a course of 2 episodes. They have been one of the strongest couples on Degrassi since season 10 Eclare, I just think it’s disrespectful to Bhandurner shippers to have ended them like that.

  47. I thought all plots tonight were extremely relatable. I think we forget sometimes that Degrassi was supposed to depict actual problems that real students face. Though we may not have pregnancy scares, many of us have had to choose between our futures and staying with what we know and what is comfortable. At the same time, the idea behind the pregnancy scare is also extremely common! And the fear of seeing life as you know it flash before your eyes is something that many students face. At the same time, I AM sad to see Bhandurner split because I do really like them. But I feel this won’t be the last we see of them.

I loved the Cam plot because it was also something kids face on a regular basis, feeling like you don’t fit in and that you’re alone and you only make mistake after mistake. I am also really excited for the Cam and Maya plot. I don’t think Cam is gay. They wouldn’t have shoved Cam and Maya so far down our throats in promos only to be like “Sorry he actually likes dudes”

As for Jake, I really like Jake and the writers/actor do a great making him fun to watch. But I don’t understand where this passion for environmental construction came from and that is why I found it hard to get into his plot. I do believe the conflict he felt with University .v. working for his dad came in and that was cool. But he started a fight in the hall because the dude didn’t recycle… it’s one thing if we knew this was his passion all along, but it felt a little thrown together.

Overall I really liked the episodes because it was a throwback to the simplicity of what Degrassi was about, a highschool with real highschool problems. Yes, it wasn’t as jammed with drama as we are used to, but I felt like I was watching something that I had experienced rather than something that felt far fetched.

  51. plot 1: exelent i though, Alli isnt one of my favorite characters, but i was worried that she would be giving up her dream when she said she would be with dave… i thought she was crazy, because high school relationships rarely last. i liked the ending, where she broke up with him, but her expression was rather cold and it reminded me of those movies where the woman chooses work over a man and is single forever

plot 2: funny, but Biancas advice seemed a bit after school special, am i the only one who thought so?

plot 3: eh, sort of boring.

  53. I loved Alli plot this episode, they found a way to sum everything Alli’s character has done up and show how she has grown over the last few years, but they still show how no matter how much she has grown she’s still that same Alli who’s involved with some kind of trouble. But I hate that we will possibly saying good bye to Alli by the end of this season, I knew it would eventually happen but I knew we had at least one more season.

Also this is kind of random but does it seem like they could be hinting at Campbell being gay, but I hope they don’t go down that road because I like him and Maya together.

  54. Tonight’s episode was mixed. I think Alli made the right decision to focus on her schoolwork, instead of Dave. I was a little bit surprised that Alli actually decided to go to MIT. I wonder if Alli’s MIT plot means that Melinda won’t be returning for next season. I’m glad that Alli and Dave broke up (or took a break) because he’s too immature and selfish. I laughed when he acted like Alli’s entire life had to revolve around him. It’s high school! You aren’t guaranteed to stay together as adults. B-

Cam: I was really interested last night, but now I don’t know anything else about him other than he’s probably really shy and gets bullied a lot by the hockey team . C

Jake: Jake is as boring as a glass of water. There isn’t a single thing that made me care about his garden or his relationship with Katie in the last 2 episodes. Jake and Katie aren’t a believable couple (or soon to be couple) at all. Their chemistry, or lack thereof, is about as believable as Marisol falling for Mo. After ending things with Drew, I thought the writers would lay off the relationship plots with Katie, especially since her breakup with Drew was so difficult. F

BTW, how’s Jacinta doing? The writers should mention her again, especially since she was such a huge part of last season.

  55. I pretty much face palmed at Alli’s stupidity during this. I feel like she was way to quick to call out pregnancy. I also felt terrible that she blamed Jenna when she couldn’t handle her own mistakes.Dave was just selfish in this and shouldn’t try and plan Alli’s life for her. It would honestly be annoying and recycling plot-lines if they really made Alli preggo.

I am in love with Campbell! How could you not love his adorableness!! He looks like a freakin sad puppy!!There were so many cringe worthy moments though. I knew people were too quick to diss Bianca for wanting to report him. I knew that Bianca was more understanding than that and as it turned out she was a great help. The ending scene with Maya and Campbell was so amazing! I especially loved when she showed her clover underwear and he stared for a looooong time. It was really cute and innocent though. And Cam asking to hang was adorable and gave hope that maybe things could finally go right for him. Although, I have a feeling the hockey team may try to get between the two. Also in next weeks promo when Cam dodges Maya’s kiss I think it might just be nerves considering how inexperienced he is.Seriously though,Campbell represents those guys out there that aren’t girl crazy, loud or rude(which for some reason many girls are starting to consider Normal behavior for most guys, which it of course isn’t) Hes sweet, adorable, shy and awkward that’s all.

I cannot be the only one who likes Jatie. At first I thought they’d never work cuz up until now they have been awkward with each other. But this week their personalities played off each other well. Its obvious that Katie is not ready for another relationship just yet. I admire Jake’s environmental dedication but that Jake vs Luke fight was ridic. They fight like girls!! Plus the fight was over Luke not recycling……-.- anyways, Jake’s new interest is random but I’m happy we are finally getting to know the real Jake instead of rebound boy Jake.

  57. Hey, Love your site!!!! So what’s your opinion on Mo and Marisol’s relationship? I know you hated Marisol a few seasons ago (so did I) but I love her character lately and I think her new relationship is the perfect side note to all the other major plots. What do you think?

    1. I don’t really have thoughts on Mo & Marisol’s relationship, but I’m liking Marisol now because they FINALLY started showing her as more than just the girl being jerk all the time.

  58. Ultimately, I’m proud of Alli because this episode was a testament to how far she has come from the niner girl obsessed with popularity, boys, and image. She put herself before her relationship, and that is unheard of on Degrassi. However, I do feel cheated as a Bhandurner fan. These two were never given a decent chance to exist as a couple without having some crazy drama surrounding them with the exception of when they first got together. Bhandurner are one of the few good and decently developed couples of this generation, and to have them make up and break up constantly is frankly a bunch of bulllshit. I don’t think these two are really over, but still. I can’t reconcile the fact that Drianca is still together, and Bhandurner isn’t.

Speaking of Drianca, this episode officially made me love Bianca. Her kindness and the wisdom she shared with Cam was the truly touching moment of this episode. I loved everything about that scene. And how can anyone not adore Cam? I still stand by my stance of only being intrigued by Camaya at this point, but I can definitely see myself liking them a lot.

I think I’m the only one that liked Jake’s plot. -shrugs- Jake is an incredibly likable character, and I thought it was fairly obvious that he was lashing out over his issues with his father, not over recycling. And it’s really not a stretch that he’s environmentally-inclined; people just aren’t paying attention to him. I could’ve done without the Katie element of it all though. I dislike her to the point of bordering hatred. If they HAD to put Jake with someone, why couldn’t it have been Jenna? Although I prefer a Jenake friendship, at least them getting together makes sense.

  59. Wouldnt it just be an awesome twist if it turned out Cam was gay. I totally get that feel from him. I also just love what eli is doing with the play. The alli/dave storyline seems a little dull to me. I called the fact that she wasnt pregnant WAY ahead of time. Plus, as far as the katie/jake storyline goes, does anybody else feel like both characters have changed way to fast? I mean jake is kind of understandable since we didnt really know him that well, but all of a sudden he’s completely “green”? Idk maybe Im way off base, but I think they couldve developed the change in the character’s ideas a little more.

  60. Dave was very selfish in this epsiode but it made sense. The scene at the party where Dave and Alli agruing in her room is one of my favorites in this season. Dave while being selfish was true Alli can imagine her life without Dave but it can’t making her question the strength of their realtionship. Really loving Dave and Alli from last seson to Smash into You and this episode. Something about that scene at party just seemed so real to be so props to move of them.
