PLOT A SUMMARY: Tori is excited for her 4-month anniversary with Zig, who tells her he’s got something wonderful planned for them. She tells him she’s wearing something nice, and that he should wear something other than the old school uniform khakis he always wears. After school Zig sneaks over to the “lost and found” bin and takes a pair of pants from it because he doesn’t have the money to buy a new pair. He also can’t afford a gift for Tori, so his mom gives him a bracelet to give her. Zig is now the lead singer of Mo’s new band WhisperHug, which also includes Imogen, Maya and Adam. Zig shows the band the bracelet and they all look at him like he’s crazy. Maya tells him that Tori’s spending a lot of money on his gift, which makes Zig feel so bad that he cancels on Tori. Zig feels guilty for not being able to give Tori the anniversary she wanted, so his friend Damon tells Zig that if he wants really wants something he should take it, and tells him about how to “dine and dash.” Tori is still upset, but Zig makes it up to her by planning a surprise dinner at Little Miss Steaks. Marisol ends up being their server, and once she delivers the check Zig tells Tori to wait outside for him. When Marisol walks away Zig skips out on the bill.
The next day Marisol confronts Zig and tells him he has 24 hours to pay her $50 for the bill or else she’ll tell both Tori and Mo. As Tori and Zig are walking through the hallway Tori asks when she can meet Zig’s mom, but he says she’s too busy. Tickets are on sale for the school dance where WhisperHug will be performing, but when Zig and Tori approach the ticket table there’s no one around. Zig tells Tori he can get her into the dance without buying a ticket and when she leaves, Zig steals the money bag on the table. Later Zig finds out there’s a locker search happening at the school because of the missing money. Office Turner asks Zig to open up his locker and guitar back, and doesn’t find anything. Zig goes into an empty classroom to pocket the stolen money and is caught by Maya and Tori. He gives them the money without a fight, and walks out feeling ashamed. Zig is too embarrassed to go to the dance now, but his mom gives him the $50 and tells him that his friends won’t care about how much money he has. Zig shows up to the dance and confesses to Tori about their dine and dash, and that his family is poor before performing with the band. Afterward Tori finds Zig’s family’s store, where he apologizes and Tori finally (and excitedly) meets Zig’ mom.
The opening scene of this plot is perfect. It is textbook Degrassi Junior High in its setup and execution. As a matter of fact the entire episode follows that protocol in its simplicity and effectiveness. This plot manages to take a character who’s shown virtually no charisma up until this point and make him endearing and relatable.
There are certain scenes that are tough to watch. When Zig shows the bracelet he wants to give Tori to the WhisperHug gang, his insecurity is compounded by their lack of support. The expression on his face as he looks at the menu at Little Miss Steaks is a double-edged sword of heartbreak and disappointment: it sinks in that he won’t be able to afford the meal, and there’s no turning back in following the criminal advice of his friend Damon.
From that point on we’re shown a character drowning in desperation. Though he didn’t get caught by authorities, he suffered what could be seen as a worse fate: being caught by his friends. The judgment they can impose is far worse than what any court system could dish out in the form of punishment.
With all of the relationships that come and go on Degrassi, Zori showed in this episode how limited teenage relationships can be. The two had been together for four months, yet Zig had successfully been able to hide the fact that he has no money, and prevent Tori from meeting his mom. That implies that a lot of their interaction only happens at school, or that any activities they do cost a limited amount of money (which contrasts the rest of WhisperHug implying that teenagers at Degrassi with no jobs are swimming in money anyway). Zori showed a tender moment as they met at Zig’s store, and we’re shown that these are two people who genuinely like each other. Tori meeting Zig’s mom was icing on this Zigtastic cake.

PLOT B SUMMARY: Dave is excited that he landed the lead role of Romeo in Eli’s play, however, it turns to confusion once he learns that Tristan will be playing “Juliet.” During rehearsal he has doubts because he doesn’t know how to “play gay.” Eli explains the importance of the play showing that it’s ok for two guys to fall in love, and Dave says he’ll try harder. At the next rehearsal Dave performs in an overly-flamboyant way, which offends Tristan. Eli tells Dave to imagine he’s singing to Alli, and Dave and Tristan knock their duet out of the park. At The Dot, Becky approaches Dave and tells him that she didn’t realize he was gay. He says he’s not and she tells him that performing as a gay character may have an affect on him, then gives him a pamphlet for “confused teens” from her dad’s church. Dave starts to worry what people are going to think, but during his conversation with Alli her birth control pills slip out of her notebook. Her parents are going out of town and she tells Dave that she wants to take things to the next level. Dave and Tristan do a photoshoot for posters for the play, but the hockey players notice what they’re doing and mock them. Eli tells them to keep it down, and Luke tells Eli that he should keep the gay stuff to himself.
At the dance Eli shows off his giant poster for the play, which features Dave and Tristan. Dave gets heckled by a couple of the hockey guys and responds by bragging about how he’s going to have sex with Alli, which upsets her. Dave admits to Eli that the hockey team’s comments bother him and that they ruined his night with Alli. Eli tells Dave that he should be having sex with Alli instead of being at the dance worrying about what everyone else thinks. Dave heads to Alli’s house to apologize. As the two get ready to have sex Dave says his condoms are in his car, but Alli says to not worry about them since she’s on birth control.
I really enjoyed watching Dave deal with the fact he felt he was being emasculated because of his role in the play. It would’ve been easy for the show to act is if Dave would have no concerns whatsoever because he dealt with LGBT issues firsthand in Cry Me A River, so now he’s all knowing and completely understanding. However, that wouldn’t jive with the way his character has been established since the beginning…he’s always had the “I wanna be a man’s man” mentality and has gone about trying to show it through trying to obtain popularity and women. I was impressed with the realism of him not being homophobic, but also being ignorant to the fact he was perpetuating a stereotype by “following Tristan’s lead.” It doesn’t need to be stated that Alli and Dave having sex is leading up to one of several possible outcomes. But in the end Dave’s storyline follows a similar pattern to Zig’s: both are trying to avoid being rejected, but realize their fears are overblown when it comes to the people that matter to them most.

PLOT C SUMMARY: Fiona is excited to return to Degrassi so that she can be with Imogen again. Fiona is annoyed that her locker is next the hockey players’, and Mike Dallas immediately hits on her. She tells him that she and Imogen is gay, but he refuses to believe her unless they kiss. Fiona walks away and Imogen seems disturbed by the entire situation and tries to walk away. Imogen tells Fiona about having joined WhisperHug, which Fiona thinks is silly, and Imogen hurries to walk away. Fiona learns she and Marisol are in charge of Student Council and to get back in Imogen’s good graces Fiona wants to throw a dance where WhisperHug can perform. However, that means talking to Dallas because Simpson wants the hockey team involved with the next big Degrassi event to makeup for the botched pep rally. Fiona gets Dallas on board with the dance under one condition: she must dance with him. Imogen finally tells Fiona that she feels like she’s being pressured into everything and Fiona agrees to give Imogen space to figure things out. At the dance Dallas tells Fiona that she needs to just talk to Imogen, which she eventually does. Imogen says she wants to be Fiona’s girlfriend, but she wants to take things super slow.
As hard as I try, I can’t seem to feel anything for Fimogen as a couple. I see no romantic chemistry when they interact, and “have no feels” for them in that regard. In comparison, I went into this episode caring as little about Zori as I did Fimogen, and Zori managed to do something. I was even more impressed by Fiona and Marisol in this episode during their brief interaction (Marisol btw has been awesome in Season 12). However, Imogen calling Fiona out on her way of problem solving was interesting. It points out that Fiona is still in the mindset of using whatever resources she has to provide an extravagant solution to either impress or apologize. We also get a brief look into Imogen’s head, learning that she wants to take things slow at a snail’s pace. The irony is that’s how the show is moving when it comes to showing us anything from her perspective on this matter. On the other hand Fiona is pushy because she’s clingy. She’s always been clingy, but it’s more apparent in this episode because she’s the dominant personality in this situation. I get that Fiona and Imogen are on opposite ends of the spectrum, but the lack of them not even coming close to meeting somewhere in the middle is indicative of how they’ve been handled so far. Even with Imogen’s revelation, Fimogen is still incredibly lopsided.
What would be a ho hum plot was spiced up a bit by the presence of Mike Dallas. I love what the writers did with his character in this episode. Normally the “bad boys” start off bad for a while, then suddenly turn good. Here we get a more realistic look at a teen boy: a guy who can be a douche one moment, and show compassion in the next.
When Fiona and Marisol were talking in this episode, Fiona asked “Doesn’t it bother you that the person you want to spend all your time with is busy with something else?” It’s funny she asked that because that seems to be a silent trend in Season 12. Marisol’s working on student council while Mo has his band. Eli’s working on the play not only to beef up his NYU portfolio, but to also keep himself occupied while Clare’s doing her co-op at the paper. Dave even admits he’s doing the play because Alli is busy doing her own thing. It wouldn’t be the end of the world if Fimogen followed suit…they work better when nothing romance related is being addressed between them anyway.

I agree with everything you said, I love Fiona but I feel she should have stayed in NY. Im not feeling Fimogen at all. I feel Degrassi writers are forcing these two way too hard. Also my big problem that Imogen has never talked to Eli about being uncomfortable with her dating Fiona. I feel Imogen still may have bottled up feelings for Eli. then you Fiona pushing for an answer about their new ‘relationship’.

I think people want Imogen to be with Eli WAY too badly… I’d like one example of Imogen displaying any more than friends feelings towards Eli after they ended things. I guess I’m in the minority, but I’m interested in where they’re going with Fimogen. It seems soon to give up on them or Fi’s character after the first episode of them as a couple. I like that the writers aren’t rushing things with them.

I think more fans are disapointed that they did not give Imogen & Eli enough to work with Imogens crush on Fiona. Like Eli picking up signals between Imogen crush with Fiona or at least Imogen could have told him she has feelings for him and Fiona ans doesn’t know what to do. Also it was a crap shoot to get Eclare back together way to quickly to make their fans happy. Imogeli could happen again in the 2nd half of season 12

Also, I find Fiona’s character far from useless. She deals with lesbian issues that haven’t even been discussed on the show like the double standard of homosexuality for girls and guys. I know many girls who have dealt with guys like Dallas who think that lesbians just need to find the right guy and see it as a challenge. The comfortability that Fi displays her sexuality in front of all of them without batting an eye is inspiring and shows her character development at the same time.

I completely agree! Fionas character is very different from the past characters who were involved in a gay storyline. I think she brings something new and is great to watch. Im looking forward to seeing how she deals with Mike not beieving she is a lesbian and dealing with her relationship with Imogen. Im excited about her storyline for the rest of the season. Fiona is indeed far from useless.

She’s useless if everything revolves around her trying to build a romantic relationship with no clarity on Imogen’s perspective (though that should happen tonight). Fiona taking on a bigger role on student council and interacting with Mike though is a different story. Mike is a jerk, but I love that he brings that to the table.

I really hope not. I can see some sort of a “mistake” make-out session happening between him and Fiona (like the one between Marco and Ellie in s7), but nothing romantic. Mike is going to end up with Alli, anyway.
The lesbian thing was not pushed too quickly on Fiona at all (if anything, it was pushed too quickly on Alex! When did she realize she was gay?). She was always very cold and detached with guys. It would be an insult to the gay community, and especially to the young gay girls who are watching the show, seeing themselves in Fiona, to have the writers be like, “hey, let’s have her question her sexuality again!” and then hook her up with a guy. Sometimes that happens in real life, but once a character on TV has shown that they are confident in their homosexuality or lesbianism, they don’t switch hit.

I’d probably smash my TV if Fiona switched back after everything that’s happened. We can bet on Mike trying to put the moves on her since he’s convinced she’s still straight. It’ll be interesting seeing how she reacts though, that’s for sure.

Jordan, I don’t see how Fiona’s sexuality was too quickly… It was being formed for 2 plus seasons. I think fans of the show are just more willing to accept straight character and couples than gay ones. I’ve seen people saying that Fimogen happened too quickly too although the build was half of a season. I rarely see comments talking about how quickly Mo and Marisol got together or slightly older characters like Holly J and Declan. They went from not talking to dating in like two episodes. But that’s a whole other ballpark.
The thought of Fiona deciding that not only is she into men, but Dallas, after years of becoming comfortable enough with her sexuality that she’s talking to a random old lady on the bus about Imogen, her girlfriend who she just kissed once but alreadly wants her to be her girlfriend (which was adorable)… would be as likely as if Riley decided he suddenly liked a new girl character his senior year at Degrassi after everything he went through. Not to be on a soapbox or anything but thinking established lesbian characters have more of a chance to be interested in a guy moreso than guy gay characters suddenly being interested in girl is just as insulting to me as Dallas thinking that he can change Fiona.

I get what you’re saying I really do but here’s my point, Marco, Riley, Paige and Alex all were confused at first and hid it for a while. I just think Fiona was pushed too quickly. It was like she kissed HJ and then she was into girls. Maybe I’m wrong (I’ve known to be wrong a few times) but I’m thinking she’s still confused thats why she promised Dallas a dance. I love Degrassi but I think they rush characters a little too fast like TNG we grew to know those characters well. I do love how they handle all real issues. It’s the best show ever and has been since degrassi jr high and yes I actually YouTube all of the old degrassis when Snake was younger! Only thing I really wish and was thinking this last night I wish they would have brought Tori back as Angela. Have a good day ;)

Also Kary, I agree that Imogen needs to give her perspective. Times a million. I’m ready to know what Imogen is thinking, and I hope that’s delved into tonight as well. Although Mike stands for everything I dislike, I really love his character. Lol. He’s a very charming antagonist. Maybe it’s something that the actor brings to it. Either way, I want to see what happens with him in general.

I definitely agree that Fimogen wasn’t established too quickly, it’s a matter of them not really establishing much of a foundation for a romantic relationship during 11.5, and part of that is the lack of knowing what Imogen’s thinking. Even with Eli, she played second fiddle to what he was going through for the longest time. I’m ready to see Imogen step from behind the shadow of other characters.

Jordan, there is a big difference between being forever confused and figuring out who you really are. I don’t have the willpower to discuss the different homosexual experiences of Marco, Riley, Paige and Alex because they were just too different to compare to each other. I understand what you mean about Degrassi rushing character’s storylines compared to TNG, but I still never thought Fiona was rushed. We are at a stalemate on that one. It’s cool if you want to think that Fiona agreed to have one dance with Mike because she secretly likes men… after two years. Lol. However, my opinion is that she promised him a dance because she wanted the hockey team on board so the dance would be approved. She wanted to have a dance so Imogen could play in her band during it. Therefore, her dance with Mike was ultimately so she could make Imogen happy. I haven’t given any thought to Mike and Alli… I don’t recall them having any scenes together. I do like Alli and Dave though. Mo and Marisol is fine with me too. I do think that Marisol became a more likeable character after she started dating Mo, but again that’s just my opinion.

Kary, I do understand where you’re coming from about Fiona being mainly centered around the relationship side of storylines. I think that’s one of the reasons why the writers are making her join student council and took away her money… We are definitely going to see something going on with her that doesn’t directly involve Imogen. Even if everything she did from now until graduation only involved Imogen, she’d still be a more interesting character than Owen. What the heck is he even doing anymore? I have faith that Imogen’s character will have some good development coming up. Or at least I’m holding out hope.
Also, I think Alli and Dallas may work together as a couple. Thanks Nina!

I usually agree with everything you say but in this case I have to disagree…I really love Fiona and I am enjoying Fimogen as a couple. I dont think Fionas character is useless in the least. On the other hand, I have never liked Dave. I cant say I have enjoyed any of his storylines in the past minus his interactions with Adam.

I think Dave was one of the more underused characters due to the writers making him comic relief. But lately we’ve seen that he could hold his own with Eli but still have his comic relief scenes… Dave has definitely been my favorite character since Now or Never but that’s just my own opinion

While it’s interesting to see that Zig will go to such lengths to keep Tori in his life, this cannot possibly end well for him as he should have just been honest with her from the start. Their relationship does seem somewhat superficial, but it seems as though had she known about his situation it wouldn’t have bothered her so much as it ultimately will when he finally tells her at the end of part 2. Zig’s frantic decision making is definitely something that can be related to. When I was in 8th Grade there were so many situations I made so much worse than I had to be because at the time I never bothered to think about the consequences. I could never see myself going through with a dine-and-dash because I’d have the common sense not to set foot in a restaurant I knew I couldn’t remotely afford, but the fact that Zig actually left knowing Marisol could easily confront him the next day was just stupid. Dave’s plot was refreshing to watch because it just shows how far he’s come since the incident with Adam. I won’t get into the supposed continuity error because that can easily be written off as him having obtained singing lessons, but the fact that he literally did not know how to play gay at first was hilarious. It’s ironic in the fact that in retrospect, no one really has to “play” gay at all, because true sexuality can be virtually undetectable in some people. While I’ll admit that Dallas is a complete asshat, his role in this episode was incredibly realistic. No straight alpha male would typically believe a girl as attractive as Fiona could be a lesbian. While I hold firm to my belief that the writers always knew she would be gay based on the obvious hints in Season 9, the reality is that even knowing she’s a lesbian wouldn’t stop someone like Dallas from hitting on her.

Good point – but that was a while ago. I think Dave was a sophomore? He’s a junior now. It’s possible that his voice could have changed (late puberty?) or he could have taken vocal lessons. Who knows. It could just be the Degrassi writer’s forgetting about the Three Tenner’s part since they obviously black-holed Wesley.

Fiona’s sexual identity was developed in a reasonable way. Remember when she told Riley that she wouldn’t be dating him if she thought he was straight? For a long time, the only man she seemed to like was her brother. The hints were certainly there.
As others have expressed above, a lot of us are waiting on Imogen’s perspective–about anything. Cristine Prosperi plays “quirky” very well, but there’s been pretty much no backstory on Imogen or insight into what makes her tick. By the time we get it, she’ll have graduated.

okay how dave handled the play was hilarious! Also, i like how Eli used Alli has a way to get dave to play a believeable gay person. Was it just me or did u also saw the whole becky sabotaging the play coming? I just knew that she wasnt going to be quiet about it. Zig’s situation is very relatable and u can see how he was afraid of losing Tori, but resorting to stealing was way too imature. If he really loved her, he should’ve told her the truth. I dont blame imogen for ignoring Fiona. Fiona automatically classified imogen as her girlfriend without talking to her about
it. In the season 11 finale, imogen even said herself that she isnt sure of her sexuality

I really like all of the Freshman now. Zig and Tori sealed the deal for me in this episode. I honestly never thought I’d like Tori. I believe Zig, Maya, and Tristan are my absolute favorite Freshman.
Alli and Dave’s relationship makes me giggle. I love them together.
Fiona and Imogen will fail. I can already sense it. I don’t like them together and I am really not a fan of Fiona anymore. Her character is ruined. I still think that Imogen has potential.

Zig plot – another plot that really harkens back to old school Degrassi. Zig has always been a BORING character, up until this point. His boring quality turned into a shy awkwardness and it was really heartbreaking watching him feel like his life was falling apart. It was a realistic and ultimately heartwarming plot and allowed Zig to finally become fleshed out. The ending made my heart melt a lil bit.

Dave plot- A great plot with a great angle. Dave isn’t homophobic (although he has displayed some amazingly ignorant behavior towards the LGBT community), but he feels pressured to let people be aware that he isn’t gay, while he still wants to do the right thing. Dave again displayed ignorant behavior, but it was suiting and he learned his lesson in the end. I wasn’t sure how I liked the tacked on Bhandurner drama at the end though…but of course it’s leading up to Alli’s plot in Say It Ain’t So.

Fiona plot- Wow. I am so over Fimogen. I really, really am. I love Fiona with all my heart, and Imogen to a lesser extent. But my god this couple is void of any chemistry. I wanted Fiona to have a gal and be happy, but not if it means a forced and contrived couple like this. Oh and we STILL DONT REALLY KNOW IMOGENS FEELINGS ABOUT EVERYTHING. However, the Mike/Fiona interaction was interesting. I still hate his guts though.

I’ll give the last two episodes the credit it deserves which is, it makes me care about Zori and Zig (perf otp). However, besides that this is an extreme drop in episode quality that last week was. Hopefully the second half of this week picks up.
The Niners can’t quite handle an A plot yet but they did a good job still.
Fimogen feels rushed and the issue needed to be developed more. Like, we don’t even know if Imogen is Bi, Lesbian, Pan, Alien. Nothing was added to their relationship outside they won’t have PDAs. It was a classic Degrassi, quick trial to test their relationship and they passed.
Then the Dave plot sent quite a bit of mixed messages. It’s kind of annoying to decide what the plot was truly about and frankly I didn’t care for this plot after they (and by they I mean the writers making Eli say it) made it seem like Dave is wrong for his sexuality being questioned and aired repeatedly in public.

I loved Alli and Dave you can feel their bond. I loved Zig and Tori, yes I knew Tori would be 100% ok with Zig being poor. Im still not feeling Fiona and Imogen. I felt more of a connection or a vibe with Mike and Fiona. I understand were Imogen is coming from but to me Imogen is seriously confused. For a long time I thought I was bisexual but in time I figured I’m straight. I love guys way too much. :)

Let me start off by saying that I have enjoyed every single niner plot. They have an old-school Degrassi feel that brings back memories of watching the show since season 4. I absolutely loved Maya’s plot about her insecurities with her body. However, this episode took Degrassi to new heights. Zig’s plot was amazing. I’ve seen plots about money troubles on other shows, and the shows do a good job…on abusing it. Zig’s plot did a great job of actually showing his background instead of focusing on the fact he is not wealthy. I don’t think Degrassi has done a dine and dash plot yet. I didn’t think Degrassi did a good job with Alex’s money troubles a few seasons back. The scene with Zig and his mother at the convenience store was touching and in my opinion one of the best scenes Degrassi has done. The locker search scene sent chills up my spine, it was that intense. I’ll admit, I had no good hopes for this storyline, but Zig and Tori had great chemistry, and Got Your Money is probably in my top ten now. Great job, Degrassi.

Yes, the Niners are a lot better than many of the other new characters added. They show the difference in bringing in characters young plus letting them develope and just throwing in older characters who already know who they are and what they want to be whether that be a homophone *cough* Luke Baker *cough* or a kooky fun character like Imogen

Degrassi killed Fiona, in my opinion, the best female characters on the show besides Holly J, and killed Imogen, who could have had a great last year at Degrassi. Why did they even introduce her if they are just gonna lump her and Fiona together for more lesbian drama? And to think I loved them both!

Wow, I thought I was the only who felt that about Fiona in season 11.5 and 12. Don’t get me wrong I love Fiona but she should have stayed in NY. Imogen seem very happy do her own thing until Fiona came back. I really hate this pushy Fiona. I would have loved to see Imogen explore her sexuality on her own. As to date more than one person. It would be a kick in the teeth if Fiona was the one who was actually wrong about her own sexuality. Maybe shes actually bisexual and Imogen is straight. Tha would be a nice little plot twist.

Overall the plots tying together in one single event in an ep set is great. The dance being a perfect stepping point for all the plot connections. Glad we keep seeing that.
Zig’s plot was perfect for what it was. It was a bit of a breather considering last week’s intense drama fests, giving us a believable and common problem at school. Everyone fears judgement, and Zig’s fears are as founded as everyone else’s. We got to see him hide an aspect of himself and come to terms with it being discovered.
Dave’s plot felt like a sequel to his Mano a Mano plot, which was a good direction to take. He was brought in as a masculine character, not in the same way as Jake or Dallas, but the clever protagonist like Hamlet or… most Disney princes are masculine. So caught in his image he can’t step out of it even for the play. Which a lot of guys can’t do. Seeing him deal with that is wonderful.
…The downside is the ending direction, cause… really? Anyone has sex there’s a baby. I’m kinda over that.
Fimogen… was an excuse plot. It went along with the other themes, and gave us more of Dallas. I am fine with more Dallas, of the Hockey guys he’s the only one that doesn’t seem like a homophobe for purpose. Owen’s got family issues with Tristan, The Florida Twins are extremist Christians, and the rest of the team are “Men’s men.” Dallas seems to just… like being mean. Because he’s the alpha male. It overpowers (but ultimately saves) a weak Fimogen plot.
We probably saw this from Fiona’s perspective because Imogen’s position is too fluid to really hold as a protag ‘yet.’ I’m hoping we see it from her perspective later (as with how much of the original Imogen character facts are still true), but for now it did have to be Fiona’s return, and Fiona being unsure and missing how scary this has to be for Imogen.
The excuse plot is we needed to build Dallas more, and so far he’s a very good antag.

Nice episode. Not quite on the level of last week, but I would give it a B or B-plus.
The Zig plot was timed perfectly. Eliminating uniforms is one more way to differentiate between the haves and have nots. And it made Zig even more self-conscious. The things he did and the reasons he did them were believable.
Little things in this story line struck me the most. When Zig shows WhisperHug the bracelet he plans to give Tori for their anniversary, not a single person—even the nice ones—is encouraging or sweet about it. They all think he should give her something more expensive.
I liked the fact that when Zig tells his mother what is going on in his life, it doesn’t get sentimental. They don’t express any outward affection. And Tori still needs backstory, but she has been appealing this year and I loved her when she impulsively hugged Zig’s mother.
The Fiona-Imogen interaction was okay. I enjoyed seeing Fiona banter with Dallas.
Dave’s story had its moments, but I thought this was the weakest of the play plots so far. Degrassi understandably pulls its punches in this case, but in real life the hockey team would be using pretty derogatory language and the poster wouldn’t say “I’m gayyyy.”

i don’t know how anyone is “so over Fimogen” seeing how they’ve only been a couple ON SCREEN for three episodes. i don’t understand. their plot was super cute and relate-able on Imogens part.

I think it’s mostly due to how they handle it. We’ve gotten very little on Imogen, making her a hard character to relate to/understand. Given every Imogen plot has never been from her perspective. This plot wouldn’t work from her perspective but we do need her POV sometime soon. And even with her perspective shared, we don’t see too much of her feelings.
Compare this to how we got plenty of Eli feelings through Clare POV plots, and we got a pretty good understanding of Jake when he plays assist on every plot. Imogen’s showing in S12 has so far been comic relief, but if she keeps getting small sparks of herself in every week it should lead to a better, stronger Fimogen plot later on.
We’ve had a season of Imogen without much of her past or story, and half a season of Fiona being a lovestruck schoolgirl, to a girl we don’t understand enough to relate to Fiona’s feelings. Cake is a good comparison for it as both have one party (Clare, Fiona) who is escaping other issues in their life (Eli+Parents, Loneliness+Alcoholism) with someone and growing too attached to them.
Imogen’s and Fi’s talk in the second part did save it, without that we’d get nothing on Imogen at all but what she said to the band and a few apprehensive looks.

My favorite plot: Zig
Honestly, I was really skeptical about the niners during the first half of the season because although they were “cute”, it did not really mix into Degrassi’s overall theme, more like something for ICarly. However, it was good to kind of have a break from the over dramatic stories that Degrassi loves to bring and I thought of their plots as mainly fill ins or “refreshers”.
Once they returned to school, I completely changed my mind about the niners. 1. Their stories were REALISTIC and it gives the younger fans a chance to relate to their problems. Although I was little bit confused about Maya’s story about her “size” because it was just “cute”, I still enjoyed it because it happens everywhere and its nice to see how it affects someone else while adding a little humor (chicken cutlet lol).
Now the reason I loved Zig’s storyline the most was because I personally connected to it. Now I never stole from other people or “dined and dashed”, but I know how it feels to know everyone else can get what they want while you have to work for the basic things. I felt Zig’s pain and I know the thought of everyone knowing your secret is the scariest thing. This was honestly Zig’s last chance to show he belongs on this show and BAM he did it! Kudos!
Now Tori… tori tori tori. I am not saying it’s the writers fault, but I do not care for Tori’s character. She gets way to emotional when it comes to relationships (honestly this whole season was about her and Zig) and she seems very spoiled. I don’t like that, but there are hundreds of little girls like her so I can’t blame her. I am just sitting here waiting for her major story but I don’t think it’s going to come out this season which disappoints me. If she’s just going to be a filler plot, then don’t put her in just about every Degrassi scene. Plus, I would like to see all the other niner’s plots without her just so i can see their growth.
Tristan is fabulous! I love him so much and I love how he stands up for what he believes in. Omg BE MY BEST FRIEND♥ Lol!

We had next to no Tori in Tristan’s plot so we could get some Maybell going on. So far she’s another character we haven’t properly gotten to know. She mentioned bits of her past which sets her tone, but not really enough to get to know why she’s so attached to Zig. My guess as a former pageant brat her plot will be an unloving/unpleasable mother but I can only guess.
She works better as an assist to plotlines, sorta like Manny before her (Back in S1-3). She doesn’t really catch and hold a plot like Alli did during S8-9. Her and Tristan in a scene works due to how natural their rapport is, and with Maya the contrast brings out the differences (Although usually it’s more for Maya’s benefit as Maya looks exceptionally grounded compared to flighty Tori).

No offense to Alex, but she lacks the charm she had on the show as a kid. Her scenes are all pretty bad and I’d like her better as a random side character and not on the star billing. She doesn’t seem to have much chemistry with the other cast members and fails to convince me that she’s anything other than annoying to Maya, Tristan, and Zig. Out of the 4, Tristan and Maya are the best of bunch as far as acting and believably are concerned.

She lacks the charm cause… kids are pretty naturally charming so adults don’t kill them. She also had much easier lines as a kid. It’s not like she had to carry roles like an 8 year old Dakota or Elle Fanning held.
But yes, of the four Niners she’s the weakest (Her acting the role is believable on the lighter scenes, but she loses something in the heavier scenes). Of course, if you asked me last Thursday I’d give Zig that title, but giving him a solid A plot shifted that view somewhat (he doesn’t ace out Maya or Tristan but they are just amazing). It’ll be easier to gauge when she gets a better solo plot than a rehash of Manny as the mascot.

Zig plot as-yet-unmentioned details;
– The mentions of school uniforms and Zig’s lack of a cell phone being unusual are really the only things that scream “I wasn’t written for DJH and sat on a shelf for 25 years”.
-The pure narrative convenience of the Lost and Found producing a pair of fashionable jeans in just the perfect size to look fitted but not skinny/tight on Zig makes me miss Boycott the Caf.
-And I really like Zig’s mom; they’ve been on a roll producing sympathetic, believable parents with limited screen time. Kind of makes me wonder why they can’t pull that off with Simpson even (especially?) in Stefan Brogren-written/directed episodes.
-Speaking of, Officer Turner’s a textbook case of why cops in schools are a bad idea, at least in fiction. How does he miss a bag of cash in a guitar-case pocket when he’s looking for *a bag of cash*!? Nice guy, lousy cop, scene would’ve been more believable if it had been Simpson or one of the teachers.
-Back to Zig’s family; they’re poor but own their own small business. I wonder if the plan is for the Novak family finances over the course of the next 3 1/2 years in-story to mirror-image the Sinclairs’, with Zig eventually having money and nice things as the store grows more profitable.

-Does the school have a graphic design/production/printing program? The posters always look so professional.
-Announcing loudly next to your girlfriend “I’M HAVING SEX WITH MY GIRLFRIEND TONIGHT!!” is a surefire way to guarantee you won’t be. Except it wasn’t.
Dallas/Fimogen
-Dallas just nails the type. Squicked by two guys making out, turned on if it’s two girls. All that’s missing is a straight girl who’s exactly the other way around.

I still think Zig has very little charisma. Even though he was dealing with his potential breakup with Tori, he just doesn’t have the right personality to be fronting a rock band. I like how they started to develop his character, bit my biggest issue with these 2 part episodes is that most plots seem to be resolved rather quickly. It would have been nicer if we saw them lay out the foundation of this story last week, even in just a passing scene. Maybe I’m wrong and this will continue to be an issue for them, but from how it ended last night, all issues were out on the table and everyone walked away with a smile on their face. Something tells me this was Zig’s one and only isolated storyline this season.
I enjoyed Dave’s story because it felt extremely realistic. Unfortunately, we still have to deal with a bunch of homophobic douchebags, so I can see why Dave would be potentially questioning himself. I love how Alli was like “Yeah, I don’t think it works that way.” She got 1 cool point for that, but lost 100 cool points thinking that she just needs to be on the pill. Instead of the abortion or adoption plot, let’s hope for either a false-positive or a miscarriage, something I don’t think Degrassi touched yet.
I have no thoughts one way or the other on Fimogen. They didn’t interest me nor did they bother me. They were just there, which I think is even worse than either of the extremes.
On a side note, Eli is so much cooler when he’s not saddled with that succubus. “Go have sex with your girlfriend!!” Too bad Clare won’t be giving it up to him any time soon.

While i understand how irritating Fiona’s one face (cling monster) can be, i understand it. I’ve known and seen a lot of people that seem to revolve around their gf/bf. Mostly it IS girls who seem to have no life outside of following their boyfriend or gf, it’s annoying and i honestly don’t know how these people deal. But i think that’s what was kinda decent about Fiona’s part in the episode. She’s really portraying that cliggyness exceptionally well even though Fiona/imogen have no chemistry, like AT ALL. I did like the locker scene a whole lot though, to me that was one of the best fi moments in the episode.
I do feel like something was missing in the episode from Fiona’s storyline, i don’t know what… but i still don’t think it deserved a C-, maybe a B-, because some people are clingy, ans will continue to be clingy.

I really liked the little bits of Russian we heard from Mrs. Novak and Damon throughout the episodes. Those little ethnic touches really emphasize the diversity of the characters, and make them seem more realistic. It feels less like the writers are just adding different last names on the characters to satisfy viewers who complain that the characters are too Anglo (even though they still are); they’re going the extra step and incorporating different languages into the script without having the characters “translate” for the audience (ie. saying a line in a different language, and then repeating it in English). They’re actually addressing the different ethnicities of the characters, and I really like that.

I loved last week’s episodes, but these haven’t had the same kind of magic like we had when the season first started. I’m glad the writers showed us Zig outside of school because we don’t really see that type of interaction in Degrassi-land, especially with fairly new characters. I think a lot of people can relate to Zig’s plot about not having as much money as his friends. Though none of his friends seem to have the wealth (or former wealth, I should say) like Fiona’s family, it can be hard when you can’t even afford clothes once the uniforms were over. Good job on the writers part. I don’t know how I feel about Zig, but his relationship with Tori is still a little bit superficial, but they’re kids and I’m glad he finally told her the truth. Now, I do think he should have been turned in for stealing the money, but that would just drag out this story. B
Dave: I had no idea he even sang, let alone got cast as the lead, but he’s friends with Eli, so I guess that’s why. I think the writers did a good job of pointing out all of the stereotypes and homophobia that a lot of LGBT teens face. Making Dave the target of bullies just highlights the fact that people are just plain cruel. Alli and Dave’s relationship still doesn’t make any sense to me, so I was a little bit shocked when Alli planned “their big night”. I hope it ends better than it dd with Johnny. LOL. B
Imogen and Fiona: When is Fiona going to have a solid relationship with someone who’s proud to be her girlfriend? Imogen’s hesitation is probably because she’s afraid of hurting Fiona, but Fiona clings and is too pushy. I’m glad the writers addressed Fi’s constant need to please people with expensive or lavish things. I really love Fiona and Annie Clark is an excellent actress, but I’m just not buying the chemistry with Fi and Imogen. They don’t even have good chemistry as friends, let alone a couple. I think Fiona was the happiest with Charlie. B

For the Zig and Tori plot…i really didn’t care for it. It was nice seeing Zig’s home life, but other than that, all this plot showed me was that i still don’t lke him and Tori as a couple. While to many people Zig is a relateable character, i feel like the whole dine an dash thing, then stealing the dance money happened a bit too fast. I feel like his need to steal might have been more effective if it lasted a few more episodes. I just felt he was swayed to steal way to easily.
I thought the Dave plot was perfectly executed. I enjoyed that they made Dave all for it, but struggle with playing the part. However I thought me might be a little more open to the play seeing how him and Adam are friends, and it could be another stance of Dave showing his support for the LGBT community, despite his insecurities. Other than that, i really enjoyed the realism of it.
Finally the Imogen and Fiona plot. I must say I am all for the Fimogen. I think back in season 11.5 all the sexual interest was more shown through glances and bodily reactions over words, which is why it works for me. However I really didn’t think their “talk” was really a talk. I felt like it should have been something more done in the privacy of one of their homes. Not just a two second thing and a school dance. I just hope later on the explore Imogen’s sexuality…I still think she would be totally cute with Adam, depending on what she finds in her journey of self discovery.
Now for Dallas, in a way he did redeem himself a bit in my eyes. The pep talk with Fiona was awesome. I just hope that he is not being used as another plot device to test Fiona’s sexuality and doubt herself. I like her because she is so confident with who she is, so if that happens i really think that will piss me off.
Random note…Does anyone else think that Whisper Hugs music vibe is similar to the Zits or is that just me?

The more I think about Imogen as a character, the more upset I become at the wasted potential that exists there.
It’s basically what everyone has been saying; she REALLY needs point-of-view. But to take it a step further — have we EVER seen Imogen alone? That’s a huge part of what puts us into a character’s perspective, even if the plot doesn’t belong to him or her.
A huge example of this is in Underneath It All, the Jake/Clare plot. Sure, we could argue on whose plot that really was, but the moment that intrigues me the most is immediately after Jake rejects Clare and leaves her bedroom. At that moment, as Jake stood in distress outside her bedroom alone, we felt like were a part of his character.
I may be mistaken, but of all the mains from Season 11, I believe we have shared a moment like that with every single character except for Imogen. I’m not too sure about Owen and Marisol, but I definitely feel more in-tune with those two than I do with Imogen.
All I hope is for us as the viewers to be able to reach this level for Imogen sometime soon, before it’s time for her to get the sack. Every storyline she has had up until now has been wasted opportunity in terms of developing a bond with Imogen’s character, because we lack that special connection to her.
And ultimately, I believe THAT is the reason why I and many other people are not feeling the Fimogen chemistry. Like someone mentioned, it’s very lopsided; Fiona may as well be dating Hannah and there would be an equal level of chemistry.

I still think you are being a little harsh on Fionas storyline. I will admit that the storyline wasnt A+ worthy due to the lack of Imogens persoective in the relationship, but it just started. I dont think the story was a C+! I think a B+ or B- would have been more appropriate. I think Fiona and Imogen are really cute together and I enjoy their storyline even though they are going to take their relationship slow. Seriously, not a C+

I can’t believe how many nay-sayers there are on the Fimogen relationship, let alone those who want Fiona to start dating Dallas. *facepalm*
Fiona has other plots going on, if the writers will take advantage of them. And now that Fimogen are official, I think they will; student council business as well as the much larger issue of her family and financial troubles. I think it was very telling that Fiona completely avoided Imogen asking her about her mother, and I have high hopes they’ll follow up on that. We also know Imogen has a big family storyline coming up herself, so hopefully that will flesh her out more.
When you say that right now Fiona is useless, I think that’s much too harsh a judgement, and overlooking something very important. Representation is very important. Fiona is the first lesbian character since Alex, whose last appearence was in the very beginning of season 7, if I recall correctly. There are a million and one straight relationships on the show, but as far as girl-girl have gone, there have been a whopping 2 (before Fimogen), and one wasn’t even taking place AT Degrassi. Because they went the Charlie route (huge mistake for multiple reasons, IMO), they wasted the time they could have spent setting her up with a different relationship at school, or just using that time for other plots. The writers need to take advantage of the time they have with Fiona before she graduates to give a fan demographic that is less catered to than any other a relationship that they can get behind and relate to. If they don’t, it will be a waste of a huge opportunity, and based on track record, it will take a while for there to be another lesbian on the show. To you it might seem overkill, but they have to do their best for a different section of the fanbase (and it’s been made harder by their own mistakes). Being able to see someone like yourself on television is powerful, and I don’t think you rate that highly enough when you evaluate Fi’s storylines overall.
The writers have set themselves up well with Tristan, as he’s firmly established as being gay, and he’s only a niner. They have his whole Degrassi career to work with, so they can afford to branch him out in a million different directions. People are already accusing Degrassi of “gaying up the show too much,” so I find it highly unlikely the trend will be bucked and another couple lesbian/bi girls will show up on the scene any time soon. Again, Fiona’s dwindling time on the show is very, very important to a good amount of people.
So while I agree with you in that I would like for Fiona to be having different plots that aren’t 100% relationship driven (that’s a problem the plagues the entire show), I understand why the writers need to have her recent plots be that way. Now that Fimogen are official, they can move forward and focus on side plots. And I guess I think she’s better rounded storyline wise than you do. It was only the short back half of s11 that was Fimogen centric, and she had the family drama as well. I didn’t think that s11 did a terrible job at showing Fiona dealing with her social status at school. I think this time you are being a bit harsh on Fiona because she’s your favorite character and you want more for her, while letting other issues slip by the wayside. And believe me, with this how there are PLENTY of issues that need to be addressed, especiall in regards to the disgusting messages being sent to young girls with many of the relationship storylines (Drew, I’m looking at you). I find telling girls it’s ok to take back a serial cheater and overall kind of awful guy as long as he weakly says he’s sorry, and apparently just because he’s cute and bumped his head, much worse than Fiona’s issues that you claim.
I also think the “it came out of nowhere! there were no clues!” argument that many people use is overblown. Imogen gives plenty of indications she’s into Fiona and it was completely different from Holly J because you could definitely see there was more interest than just being friends on Imogen’s mind while Holly J was clear that Fiona was just a friend. It was great because Fiona thought she was fighting off another straight girl crush, but we as the audience got to see that it wasn’t another repeat. Just because it’s more subtle doesn’t mean it’s poorly done. I would like to see more of Imogen’s POV, and I thought Got Your Money Part 2 did just that. I thought it was very realistic how she was uncomfortable with Fiona trying to take over and control everything about the relationship from the get-go. This is completely uncharted territory for her and they portrayed that wonderfully.
And as far as chemisty goes, I, and a lot of other people, think Fimogen have it in spades. Much more than lots of other couples on the show as well.
