PLOT A SUMMARY: Dave is desperate to get Alli back, who wants nothing to do with him.  Dave joins the Model UN and surprises Alli by setting everything up.  She agrees to finally talk with Dave, which leads to them making out and getting back together.  Meanwhile, Dave’s former summer fling Jacinta is constantly texting him, wanting to get back together.  He blocks her on all social media sites, and when she calls him, Dave tells her to never call him again.  Dave and Alli greet all of the students from other schools who arrive at Degrassi for the Model UN, and Dave comes face to face with Jacinta again.

Jacinta confronts Dave in front of Alli during the Model UN, and Dave is forced to tell Alli about him and Jacinta hooking up.  He tells Alli that Jacinta is stalking him everything will be ok, but that still doesn’t ease Alli’s fears.  Dave secretly talks to Jacinta and invites her to meet up outside, and they go for a drive.  She thinks they’re getting back together, but Dave tells her he’s driving her to the train station to get her away from him and Alli.  Jacinta doesn’t understand what she did to cause Dave to stop talking to her, and he says them hooking up was a mistake.  She grabs Dave’s phone and jumps out of the car at a stoplight, running off to send Alli breakup messages (which Alli freaks out over back at the Model UN).  Dave catches up with Jacinta, and as they continue to argue Jacinta walks into traffic without looking and gets hit by a car.  Dave returns to Degrassi, where Alli is waiting to chew him out.  Dave tells her about the accident, and though Alli tries to comfort him, Dave still feels guilty because the doctors don’t know if Jacinta will ever walk again.

In response to an angry fan, Stephen Stohn once said “Sometimes things unfold in ways that don’t make sense. sometimes they makes sense in a while…sometimes they don’t…”

That quote stayed in the back of my mind as I watched this episode.  It reminded me of how annoyed everyone was after Nowhere To Run, where Bhandurner officially derailed itself in less than sixty seconds with a revelation that was out of character for Dave.

Dave’s infidelity will never really make much sense, but how much does that matter when it opened up the possibility for such an emotional storyline?  It becomes one of those moments that one must eventually accept and/or overlook, because it’s only the means to an end (aka this episode).

I loved this Bhandurner reunion.  Not simply because I’m a Bhandurner fan, but because a couple hastily reunited out of familiarity, yet their unresolved issues weren’t swept underneath the rug.  Rooting for Dave was easy because he was genuinely sorry for hurting Alli, but Alli’s fears given her past were completely understandable…gotta love the extra effort Degrassi took to make Alli’s worries clear by her verbalizing every romantic failure she’s dealt with.  At first Jacinta comes off as a crazy stalker, with Dave labeling her as such helping to shape our notion of her.  But Dave and Jacinta’s conversation in the car hit’s an emotional chord, despite how stalkerish her behavior seemed.  Dave slept with her, then dropped her without an explanation.  She became emotionally attached, so she didn’t understand what she’d done wrong or why she wasn’t good enough.  That’s a question many wish they knew the answer to in their own failed relationships…people fear the idea of not having proper closure.

As far as Dave texting and driving?  I don’t feel like it’s a cop out that he didn’t crash his car or get injured.  This might be a bold thing to say, but it would’ve felt very cliché if Degrassi had gone down that route.  We would’ve seen it coming from a mile away given that from the opening scene of the episode until the accident Degrassi  was practically holding up a giant neon sign saying “DON’T TEXT AND DRIVE.”

Instead, we get a curveball.  I went into this episode blind.  I watched both parts on the same night, and didn’t watch any of the promos for it.  Jacinta getting hit by a car came out of left field.  Nothing else needs to be said about Jahmil French’s performance other than it was phenomenal, from navigating the treacherous waters of Alli’s emotions with Jacinta in the picture to feeling as if he’s responsible for potentially ruining someone’s life.  It’s ironic that Dave didn’t feel guilty about hurting Jacinta emotionally until she got hurt physically.  The accident became a parallel to their fling’s demise, only this time the aftermath unfolded before Dave’s very eyes.  It’s also ironic that with the status of Jacinta’s health currently unknown, we’re now the ones hoping for some type of closure.

PLOT B SUMMARYKatie’s recovering from knee surgery, which means Marisol will have to find a new partner for the Model UN.  Mr. Perino assigns Mo to be her partner, which she reluctantly accepts.  Mo and Marisol get into an argument over the Model UN issue, which leads Mo to stick gum in Marisol’s hair.  Katie and Drew think that Mo might have a crush on Marisol, who isn’t interested in Mo because of his weight.  She plans to tell Mo that she’s not interested, but when she finds him he’s in the middle of taking her Model UN solution of having a benefit concert and expanding on it by creating a song to go along with it.  Marisol starts to develop a crush on Mo, but she’s hurt and storms off when she finds out he doesn‘t feel the same way.  Later, Mo tells her he’s never had feelings for her because he felt she was out of his league, and the two share a kiss.

There are parts of this Mo/Marisol storyline that I liked and disliked.  I applaud the show for going to some length to actually establish chemistry between two characters, but when it comes down to it their pairing still felt kind of random. We finally get to see beyond the shallow exterior of Marisol, but the scene where the “light bulb” goes off in her head and she suddenly has feelings for Mo made me roll my eyes.  But then two seconds later when Mo rejects her instead of it being the other way around that’s fantastic.  They’re not a couple I dislike, but Mo and Marisol’s quick start didn’t really draw me in either.  For me, they’re a couple that could go either way in the future.

**************

PLOT C SUMMARYAdam finds a love note in his book bag, but tears it up because he thinks it’s a prank.  One of his fears is skateboarding, so he hits up Degrassi’s skate park after school, where he’s approached by Tori.  She asks him a bunch of questions about relationships, which leads him to believe she might be his secret admirer despite dating Zig.  Adam keeps an eye on his locker from afar and catches Tori putting a note in his locker.  She tells him her friend has a crush on him, and Adam agrees to go on a double date with Tori, Zig and her friend.  Adam shows up to the date to find out his secret admirer is Tristan.  Tori assumed that Adam’s LGBT pin meant that he was gay, but he informs them that he’s transgender.  Tristan feels embarrassed, but Adam share’s his past dating disasters and encourages Tristan to keep trying.

Reading the episode description for the this plot basically gave it away, and the mentality was “Why are they always screwing over Adam’s love life?”

Watching the plot elicited a different response.  Out of Adam and Tristan’s romantic gaffe came a great conversation between two of the shows LGBT characters.  It was wonderful watching Adam pass on what he’s learned to Tristan.  Normally shows put a lot of work into portraying LGBT issues correctly, but they flipped the switch to show how people can make honest mistakes (Tori assuming Adam was a gay guy, and Zig not knowing what the “T” in LGBT stands for) without it being a storyline involving malicious behavior.  And Adam gets a boost of confidence realizing that not everyone immediately views him as “the transgender kid” or “that girl who’s now a guy.”

P.S.  Thank you Degrassi for mention the Owen connection!

    Marisol’s plot is there. Not great but not bad either.

    Adam’s plot was good as usual. It’s nice to see him pass some of his “wisdom” to Tristian. I’m also glad they brought up what Owen did to him in season 10. Consistency is a good thing.

    1. As much as I like Drianca (and I adore Krew), it irks me that it looks like Drew will once again be the cheating boyfriend and with Bianca again. It’s like he’s always not thinking at all. I know Bianca has changed for the better, but that kiss looks like a step backwards. Katie was right to worry/suspect and now she has Drew issues on top of her medication addiction.

  5. I’m confused: Drew has been there for Katie all throughout the time she’s been in the hospital, according to Katie. But all of a sudden, in next week’s episode, Drew says that things between him and Katie haven’t been so great lately. Also, why is Katie dancing on that knee already lol…

        ~~~The only way Katie could walk is being on a higher dose of pain medication. The Degrassi writers need to do more research on physical and Mental health issues.
    2. That’s what I was thinking.. how has things not been good with Katie? It looks like things has been fine.. unless he’s getting bored, which would sort of make sense with the little hints the writers have been dropping (him looking at Imogen in Underneath it All when she changed her look at the party, his reaction to Jacinta’s pictures, etc.)
      Also, I forget if it was in this episode or last week’s one, but Katie says she still hasn’t had surgery… Hasn’t it been like weeks since Can’t Tell Me Nothing? How has she still not had surgery?
      1. This is exactly what I was thinking! I was rolling my eyes that we were once again told, not shown, that things were bad between a couple, but then I remembered those moments when Drew was looking at other girls… we’ve known for awhile that there is no spark between this couple, and it seems like Drew’s finally realizing that. Also, his heart clearly lies with Bianca. And if not for her, I still think that Katie’s pill addiction will push him away.
    3. just because its a week for us doesnt mean its a week in Degrassiverse kiddies, my guess is Katies pretty healed up by now (not totally but at least isnt on bed rest) and has now become addicted to the pain pills she was probably prescribed (continuity from earlier this season) and is acting like a hoe thanks to said abuse of pain pills. the heart wants what the heart wants…… and im pretty sure Drianca is gunna be our Semma (at least relationship wise) till they leave
  7. I wonder if Jacinta is gonna ever be mentioned again.. I know we only knew her for one episode, but a combination of Dave’s reaction to her getting hit and Dave saying the doctors don’t know if she’ll be able to walk again… it made me feel bad for her. I bet she’s gonna disappear off the face of the earth, but I’d like to know if she can’t walk anymore or what. I hope she can walk, if she can’t walk, it’d be so sad, considering how it happened.
    One thing: the running over scene? BRAVO. Better than just “telling” us Eli crashed his car into a wall (that’d be very hard to show, but the “crash” scene in DTW was terrible). As fake as it looked, I liked that they showed the effort to SHOW us the accident, not tell us.
    Oh yeah, and Jahmil French – amazing actor. Glad he finally got good material to showcase his skills.
    1. That looked rather realistic to me; she hit and broke the windshield and got thrown when the car braked just like in real life. Even though I knew she was going to get hit, I hadn’t expected it to be like that. I thought they would just focus on Dave’s shocked expression as a car horn and thud happened in the background. Kudos to them.
    Excellent acting on Jahmil’s part. I’m also glad to see Ali being supportive of Dave. Those two are so good for each other.
    I could see Adam and Tristan becoming friends. I had a what the fuck moment when Zig asked what the t stands for. I really don’t get the point in his character.
    Marisol and Mo…I’m not sure. At least the writers attempted to create some chemistry. I’ll have to see how long this lasts.
    All in all, this episode had solid plots that were portrayed well. Great job Degrassi!
    Drew and Katie drama next week = stupid… just like Drew and Katie.
    They’re trying to turn Drew into a player again and we all know where that got him last time.
    On the other hand, Katie dancing with random creeper guy looks interesting. I could see her trying to make Drew jealous or something and it going totally wrong. As far as another rape plot, I think the promo makes it too obvious. I’ve been wrong before though.
  15. Dave: This was a good plot. I enjoyed seeing the trust issue between Alli and Dave. I think part one wasn’t all that great because it was set up; however, the setup really added to part two. Dave’s squirming trying to figure out how to get rid of Jacinta without Alli getting upset was really great to watch. Seeing Dave struggle to wrap his head around his actions was good too. Having him not understand the impact of sex and his words on Jacinta until it was too late showed character development. I’m hoping that Jacinta is mentioned more and more and I would love to see Dave’s character go through some sort of internal struggle about how to react and see him become reserved and soft spoken realizing what he has been a part of. Overall, a lot of good things in this plot.
    Marisol: I actually liked this plot kind of. It was amusing to see Marisol go through these stages of vulnerability. For example, her reaction to Mo after admitting that she liked him is very typical of a high status girl who just got rejected. Seeing a look into Marisol’s need to be attached to someone (she mentions about not having a boyfriend in part one) is really an interesting dynamic that explains her superficiality. The worst part of the plot was the lack of spark. She falls in love after he makes a song? No. There needed to be more.
    Adam: I think this was a great plot. It finally touched on Adam’s past failures with girls and we got to see how that has affected his mindset about dating. And, seeing Adam and Clare’s friendship being strong was great. I wished there would’ve been a bit of Adam/Eli interaction as most guys would go to their best guy friend. While the idea of Adam getting a chance to pass on some wisdom and aid to Tristan (it would be great to see Adam become like a mentor for Tristan), the big point of the plot was that Adam is finally getting the attention as being a guy. Looking forward to more simple plots like this one.
    Nest episode: The drama between Drew/Katie and Bianca is good to see continuation, but is getting old. We all know that Katie’s getting paranoid; however, I’m looking forward to seeing her paranoia become reality and to see her take it to the next level by trying to get even. As for the rape rumors, it’s been done before. I think that the episode will focus mainly on Katie vs. Bianca rather than Krew vs. Drianca. I have a bad feeling this plot will end up with a fickle Bianca and an exaggerated Katie. About the craziness of suddenly things between Katie and Drew not going so well, I don’t know how they are going to show that, but I hope that it’s shown not just told.
      Just like the fact that *yes*, a body builder and super macho man *can* be gay or that popular cheerleader who loves pink and shopping is a lesbian.
  20. I desperately want to know what the end of this episode means for Dave’s character. I’ve never been too invested in him, but now I want to know more about him than any other character right now. I also wonder what this means for the future of Bhandurner, a Degrassi couple I actually want to see together.
    I also want an Adam/Tristan friendship. Those two would have an interesting dynamic. They’re both LGBT, but they’re so different it’d make for great interaction. Also kudos to Adam acknowledging that dating in high school isn’t always the best route to happiness. If only the show got the memo too, hah.
    Morisol doesn’t really do it for me right now, but I like seeing Mo inadvertently humbling Marisol.
    I shouldn’t get too excited, but I am so insanely psyched for next week. I can’t wait for shit to go down between Katie and Bianca, but mostly I’m excited to get a nice character study into Bianca. I was never on board with the Bianca lovefest in the fandom because I felt like I still didn’t know anything about her. But maybe next week’s episode will change my mind.
    I also think that while the promos are throwing a Katie vs. Bianca/Krew vs. Drianca showdown in our faces, I can see Katie and Bianca settling their differences in the end. And God knows I’m sick of girl squabbles over guys.
  21. The last scene with Bhandurner was SO reminsicent of the older Degrassi like when Emma decided to go to the clinic to treat her Ghonerrea (ahh, sorry if I spelt that wrong), or Ashley saying Jimmy is already a man in the episode Can’t Hardly Wait…or even when Darcy and Clare were frightened after the cyber stalker went to jail. That scene made me so happy despite the very emotional situation because finally we got a scene that just shows the TRUE Degrassi. It was beautiful. Even Ali just pleeing saying it was an accident, I couldn’t help but smile. The acting, the line, the trade mark degrassi music…it was just perfect. While people may find that Degrassi is just not the same as it used to be, I still will never stop watching this show because it’s scenes like these that make me love this show all over again.
    and I love Tori and Zig’s innocence. One thing the show does really well is distinguish clearly the level of maturity each character has. Even if each grade wasn’t represented by their shirt colour, you can still figure out the younger kids from the older kids. Tori’s genuine mistake and Zig’s genuine confusion about transgender was so adorable and helps me remember that the couple is only in grade 9
  25. As this season continues to progress, I’m becoming more and more disconnected with the Degrassiverse.
    I don’t know if I’m just just expecting too much out of the episodes, but this was a classic episode where I had a hard time caring for 2 of the 3 main plots. I could not get behind the Dave and Alli insta-reunion and I honestly found it hard to muster up any sympathy for Dave regarding Jacinta. Jacinta is a nobody to me. We were quickly introduced to her and then she was hit by a car. There was no emotional impact (ha!) there. Perhaps if they showed us Dave and Alli interacting prior to the start of these episodes, I may have cared for either of the 3 players in this really hastily thrown together plot. And I bet we only see them sparingly throughout the rest of the season.
    Then there’s Marisol and Mo, who are also just kind of there. Regardless of the fact there’s absolutely zero chemistry between them, Marisol is completely unlikeable. I can’t even fathom any circumstance where I would actively root for her to “get the guy.” I don’t care either way about Mo either. He’s alright, but he’s kind of pointless as well.
    I hate to be the guy who consistently dwells on the past, but with a few minor exceptions, the current generation,is boring. There are no JT’s, Craig’s, Paige’s, Spinner’s or Holly J’s any more. Where are the larger than life personalities? I’m still going to watch, but there’s really no long-term investment at this point. I know they steered away from showing us the graduates at University, but I would prefer an entire new series that JUST follows the graduates. Those are the ones I really care about. Of this group, I only care about Alli, Eli, Fiona and Bianca. Compared to the Degrassi of 5 seasons ago, that’s pretty sad.
  26. I think the best thing they could do is bring in Jacinta as a reoccurring character and let the guilt and the whole situation play out a bit. Then maybe develop Jacinta and she could be a good character in the future (the acting was good, she has potential XD). I think the best and most creative excuse to upgrade a minor character is getting hit by a car, the writers should use it.
It seems that this whole season has a lot of ‘what goes aroung comes around’. “BadKarma” for certain characters that you would least expect.Eli & Imogen in (NYN), Clare (NRTMK), Katie (CTMN), Fiona (UIA) and now Dave in SIY. That kind of scares me what next in HG & the season final. Fimogen may not happen I think Fiona feelings may differ after the kiss, Eli may not want Clare back or visa versa. Imogen and Eli may get together?? Eli and Bianca could hook up?? Fiona family may become broke and Fiona may become a whiny brat. So who knows what could happen. As I said before What goes around comes around.
  30. Loved the moment when Clare realized that Tori thought Adam was a gay GUY, and pointed it out to him. To me, that was such a victory for Adam – someone finally seeing him as a guy, rather than a girl, without a second thought about it. And then for Adam to reach out to Tristan – and them to connect over Owen’s past behavior, as well as their own issues being LGBT – out of the four niners, Maya and Tristan are the ones with the most plotline potential, plus being relatable as siblings of already established characters. I wish we could see more of them, instead of the Tori and Zig show all the time.
  34. This is the kind of emotional Degrassi that I missed watching!!!!! The last few mintues of Dave’s scene….WOW. Who knew he had such talent?! I really hope that the writers continue with the Jacinta plot because it was the mos interesting use of Dave’s character I’ve seen since he got started on the show.
    As far as Drew and Bianca getting back together (!!!!), I think Bianca needs to offer Katie some serious advice about her boyfriend (like that would ever happen lol) because Drew has cheated on all of his girlfriends, or he’s lying about something. Typical teenage behavior, but it still doesn’t make it right. I hope that Bianca has changed for the better. I’m kinda all for Katie’s drug addiction because the actress is so boring and flat, I’m mildly interested in seeing if she can handle tougher material.
    The writers need to find some use for Adam and Fiona. Both of them have struggled to find and maintain healthy relationships while dating. The writers are terrible at writing LGBT characters.
    I don’t have a comment about Mo and Marisol. I don’t buy their “relationship”, unless the writers are trying to prove to us that appearance doesn’t matter and personality is all that counts. I guess.
  36. I thought Dave and Alli’s plot was really well done. Jahmil is one of my favorite actors after watching this.
    Mo and Marisol is a flop to me. I hope they progress better.
    Adam’s plots always leave me satisfied. This one was well done, and I enjoyed his interaction with Clare. I think it was good that he went to get rather than another guy because it shows that despite being around a girl he was able to be seen as a guy. It shows that his guy personality really shines through when compared to Clare, who is fairly girly. I thought Adam and Tristan’s scenes together were really well done, and I’m glad that everything was resolved in the way it was.
  39. Kary, did you know that Degrassi has been nominated for a NAACP Image award? Given Jahmil French’s acting in this episode, it’s clear to see why.
