PLOT A SUMMARY: Katie’s trying out for National Soccer Team, and while aggressively going for the ball she elbows another girl in the face, breaking the girl’s nose…Katie doesn’t apologize. She gets freaked out waiting for a callback because making the team is her dream. On top of that, she’s stressed out planning school events. She eventually receives a callback, and Marisol decides to take on event planning for her.
She kicks butt during the tryouts. She tries to apologize to the girl whose nose she broke, but the girl doesn’t believe her and retaliates by tripping Katie, injuring her knee. She wants to keep going, but her knee might be more hurt than she realizes. Her fear is that she will be like her mom (who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at a young age), so Drew helps her get an appointment with a sports doctor. Katie doesn’t accept any of the options the doctor gives her for treatment because they’ll cause her to miss her shot at the National team, so she begs him to prescribe her pain meds…he refuses because of their addictive nature. At home Katie helps her mom fill her medicine container when Katie realizes her mom doesn’t take her prescribed codeine pills everyday. When her mom leaves the room, Katie decides to pop a couple, which relieves her knee pain and she’s able to practice flawlessly. Maya eventually catches Katie going for their mom’s pills, but promises not to rat Katie out. Katie reveals to Drew that she’s taking codeine and he only warns her to be careful.
After realizing Marisol can’t handle Degrassi Coffee House, Katie decides to take over. She takes some codeine and after the drugs kick in she tricks to help Jake set up the stage, but she gets herself stuck in the air on a scissor lift. She’s feeling overwhelmed and gets more frustrated when she googles things about soccer knee injuries. She decides to go to her tryout anyway and before she can do anything she falls to the ground in pain after hearing something snap in her knee. She doesn’t make the National team and learns she’ll need surgery to fix her knee. She’s disappointed, and we’re left watching Katie stare at her mom who is filling up her pill container.
I thought Part 2 was much better than Part 1. We got a stronger sense of Katie’s passion and desperation about wanting to make the National Soccer Team, on top of managing things at Degrassi. I’m glad we finally got to see this strong, overachieving side of her as opposed to her playing second fiddle to Drew or Marisol. While Part 1 was very straightforward, the writing became very clever in Part 2 in a multitude of ways: the “heavy machinery” foreshadowing was brilliant, topped off by Katie saying “I’m really high…fitting dialogue for a girl doped up on codeine and stuck on a scissor lift.
While Fiona’s presence caused Katie to take control of Degrassi Coffee House situation, I can only smile knowing that the show hasn’t forgotten about Fiona’s grudge, and they remind us she has no intentions of forgetting either until Katie and Marisol receive their just desserts. Another great thing this episode did was show us how incredibly easy it is to be an enabler. While Drew was more willing to shrug it off and just warn her to be careful, Maya obviously wanted to tell on Katie, but gave into Katie’s sob story because she didn’t want to be the reason Katie’s dreams were ruined. People don’t become dependent without some sort of help. And with the end of this episode hinting that Katie’s desire to take codeine isn’t over, it could be a long road for Ms. Matlin, even after she recovers from surgery. We can all breathe a sigh of relief now that this isn’t “Peter Stone On Drugs 2.0.”

PLOT B SUMMARY: Jenna is stressed out because her songbook is still at KC’s place, which means she’ll have to talk to him in order to get it back. She arrives to class early one day and KC returns the book to her, as well as some other things: a couple of baby items and pictures of them as a family with Tyson. The items cause a flood of emotions to hit Jenna, but Alli tries to cheer her up by getting Jenna to sign up to sing a song at the Degrassi Coffee House event. Jenna writes and practices a song in the same room where Jake is building the set for Degrassi Coffee House. The two begin talking, and Jake reveals his breakup with Clare. He convinces Jenna to write a song that isn’t “happy.”
KC overhears Jenna talking to Jake about her song, which is about her and KC’s breakup. In class KC reads a scathing poem that indirectly blasts Jenna. Jenna wants to retaliate, but decides to play her original song (KC is in the audience listening). Afterward, KC tells Jenna that he realizes Jenna’s trying to get over what happened in her own way. The two walk away from each other on amicable terms.
This isn’t a mind-blowing, emotional plot that we’re now used to with Jenna and KC, but it serves as a very solid conclusion to the adoption storyline. I enjoyed the contrast between the ways that Jenna and KC were coping with the situation. Jenna using song to express her emotions felt very natural because music is an outlet to her and she wanted to move on, while it seemed like KC’s pain made him determined to sort of “stick it” to Jenna.
It’s good to see them both becoming more mature…especially KC, who before now probably would’ve blamed everyone but himself for his problems.

PLOT C SUMMARY: Tristan and Tori are working on their West Drive vlog when Tori abruptly leaves to hang out with her boyfriend Zig. Tristan goes to his brother Owen for advice and Owen reluctantly gives him some…he tells Tristan to tell Tori that Zig called her fat. Tristan does so, but immediately confesses after Tori starts crying. Tori is furious that Tristan would lie to her. Tristan tricks Tori and Zig into meeting each other at The Dot so that he can apologize to both of them. He admits that he’s jealous of Zig and Tori’s relationship, and the three decide to perform a song together for Degrassi Coffee House. Zig doesn’t really like the idea because it’s a duet and there’s no part for him, so Tristan writes him a part. However, Zig reveals that he’s written a rap, and with Tori liking the rap and thinking Tristan’s song is campy, Tristan storms off. After another talk with his brother Owen, Tristan decides to do his song whether or not he has Tori and Zig’s support. As he’s singing the crowd makes fun of him, so Tori joins Tristan to make it a duet. They’re able to coax Zig into doing his rap, and their performance gets a standing ovation.
The niners have appeared in the first four episodes, and they have done a good job of immediately contributing to the show. Even if people consider it filler material, it’s STRONG, and there’s nothing wrong with filler if it’s good. I continue to enjoy and be impressed by Tori and Tristan’s cheesy friendship. While I’m liking Maya, Tori and Tristan so far, I’m still on the bubble about Zig…that’s only because like when Jake first started the show, he’s just there. I’m not sure if there will ever be a clear explanation about Owen’s past homophobic actions, but the interaction between him and Tristan in this episode did not disappoint.

PLOT A – I love the fact that unlike Katie’s bulimia that was solved almost instantly, it looks like her addiction to the codeine is going to stick around and I’m grateful. Katie’s determination and her losing her dream when it was within reach actually was a bit sad to me. I actually felt bad for her. I understood Drew and Maya’s conflicted emotions over what to do or say to Katie in fear of coming off as controlling especially knowing how stubborn she can be. Kudos to Fiona for calling Marisol (and Katie) out.
PLOT B – KC’s immature action in class really annoyed me, however I felt he came off as a better person at the end. But even though I enjoyed their storyline with Tyson, I honestly hope they don’t get back together. I think their time has passed as a couple and I don’t see anything beneficial for either of them to be together again. Thank you Degrassi writers for giving Jake some screen time to get him socializing more. But I just found it so weird that Alli and Jake actually spoke given what happened over summer, but I guess she’s more ticked at Clare.
PLOT C – Owen’s interaction with Tristan made me smile. It wasn’t over the top and it was just interesting to see a little bonding. We got a little more insight into probably why Owen is more accepting of Tristan’s sexual orientation aside from him being his brother. I felt seriously bad for Tristan at the start of the performance but I’m glad Tori (I’m not too fond of her) and Zig (I feel he’s like Jake in the development department – very little) didn’t leave him to become shark bait.
Next Week –
According to what I saw on the MuchMusic promo on Tumblr, a part of me thinks it might be Alli that is this “new girl” Jake brings home and not the apparent Summer (I honestly wished she’s a younger woman Mr. Edwards hooked up with for extra drama) that causes drama in the Martin/Edwards family. If that’s so, then I’m be seriously disappointed/ticked off at Jake and Alli while I cringe at Clare getting dramatic (can we please have Alli take her rightful title back?).

The Teennick promo showed that it’s Jenna and Clare’s like: “Are you kidding me?” I laughed when I saw this promo. I never thought I would want Clare to suffer and for the record, Jenna didn’t steal one of Clare’s men this time!

It still makes me cringe though. Jake doesn’t like drama but he jumps into it everytime even with the neon “Drama ahead” signs. I hope it’s something innocent like a project or something and not Jake or Jenna on the rebound. Since the breakup was new and given the KC factor, I understand why Clare would flip. She’s bound for an emotional breakdown with the divorce and all this relationship drama.

Am I the only one who thinks that the Jenna/Jake thing kind of makes sense? The show did a pretty good job establishing that they are in a similar place emotionally during the previous two episodes. That’s more that they do for most new couples (look at Jake and Clare or Zig and Tori, for instance). Also, about Jake creating more drama for Clare, I’m not entirely convinced that he knows the whole Clare/KC/Jenna history, considering the fact that it happened before he came back to town.

the beginning of part had me loling at the awkwardness and katie operating heavy machinery (when i shouldn’t be loling…) but it picked up perfectly in the second half! katie is sooo gonna become a pill popper!

Wow, Maya and Drew are being such good friends/sister/boyfriend/whatever to Katie, letting her take a narcotic and then playing soccer on an injured knee. Even though I don’t really like Katie… or Drew… or Krew… I still liked this plot. At first I thought it was being wrapped up too neatly, but there were some hints that Katie’s addiction isn’t resolved all nicely like her bulimia.
These past two episodes made me think that Jake and Jenna were gonna hook up eventually, which would have felt like an extremely random pairing, but apparently Jake is going to be bringing another girl home (Alli?). I’m happy with the way KC and Jenna resolved, though. And can I just mention that Jessica Tyler kind of sucks at singing? Also… two whole episodes without Clare! Hallelujah! But of course she had to be mentioned several times by Jake.
The niners did their job of having a light, comedic filler plot. I want to see more of Zig out of Tori’s shadow. We haven’t really seen his personality yet, although I did really enjoy the part when he jumped up and did his rap. I’m starting to like him. What I don’t get is how Owen could be so homophobic but then be at least somewhat supportive to his gay brother?? Are we ever gonna get an explanation on that?
….THE MINI. LOLLING SO HARD AT ELI DANCING. and Paige and Sav…omg… seeing old characters (especially an original like Paige) always makes me so nostalgic… *sigh*

About Tristan and Owen relationship, I think that you’re absolutely right. It doesn’t really makes sense the way it is written. From the moment I heard about Owen having an openly gay little brother, I thought that it was fairly inconsistent with the previously established characterization. In that kind of situation, something had to give. Either Tristan would have been discouraged from being out and proud by his older brother’s negative attitudes towards his sexual orientation or Owen’s homophobia would have mellowed down for the sake of his little brother’s wellbeing. It’s pretty much impossible for a proudly gay and a violently homophobic person to coexist in the same family without tearing that family apart. The show seems to be moving in the direction of Owen coming to his senses, rather than Tristan being beaten down by homophobia, but the thing is that Owen’s reconsideration of his views on homosexuality would not have come now; it would have come at the time when Tristan first came out to his family. Honestly, I can still see how the show can explain this inconsistency by providing more background information. It would make sense if Tristan’s coming out happened after Owen started harassing Riley and Zane, but before last year’s prom, when Owen was capable of talking about Riley to Anya in quite normal terms. Also, did anyone else catch Tristan’s line about whether or not he has to start playing football in order to gain people’s acceptance? As the events of the previous season have shown, clearly for some people, that wouldn’t have been enough.

It has been established that Owen is not over the fact that Tristan is gay. Owen is embarrassed to be seen near his brother. He is a SECRETLY a good brother, but obviously is ashamed of Tristan’s “gay” activities. Recall the time Owen pushes his brother to do “straight” and “normal” things during the weights scene? Whenever the two interact, Owen has made excuses to talk to Tristan in public. Also, when Tristan was outside and Owen passed by, Owen made sure the two were out of clear view to be seen interacting.
Truthfully, I am really excited to see the tipping point of Owen. So far, the continuity of his character has not been destroyed and I hope it develops.

Jake was in a supporting role for Can’t Tell Me Nothing 1 & 2 so he’s not getting three plots in a row. I think that happened more so in Now/Never with the Cake/Eclare drama.

It just seems like another rebound relationship for Jake. I just wished Degrassi writers would stop trying to hook everyone up with everyone. It does make it look kind of bad that Jenna might date Jake since he’s another one of Clare’s ex. If she had another boyfriend that was say Mo for example it wouldn’t cause such an issue but it’s back to back.

The nice thing about that scene was that every single one of the points Fiona made was completely true. The things that Katie is doing really are good grounds for impeachment. Compared to Katie and Marisol, Fiona is clearly more responsible and has better ideas about school events. Meanwhile, Jake basically did all the job necessary for setting up and running the Coffee House event in this episode (Marisol having completely flaked out on it by the end). Vote Fiona and Jake for President and VP!

I dunno, but I’m just not feeling these new episodes. I felt more for Sav and Paige’s 20 seconds during the mini than anything else during the episode.
I simply don’t like Katie. I have no reason to root for her or feel concerned over her 1 day codeine addiction. There were so many cliche plot points and dialogue in this episode, my eyes were rolling out the back of my head.
I actually do like the Niner’s, but they really need to beef up their storyline soon because if they continue to play Tristan’s jealousy all season, it’s going to get worn out really fast.

I know they backed off showing the characters once they graduated, but characters like Sav and Paige could easily be woven back into the canvas. Sav, because of Alli and Paige, well, because she’s Paige.Is Marco still student teaching? We should get a follow-up on his life and give us some resoliution to the dangling Marco/Paige plot from DGH. They could also show us what’s up with Emma/Spinner, maybe when everyone returns for Emma’s funeral. (heh)

I agree, this episode focused on characters I could care less about. I thought putting a Katie plot after the last episode was a strange choice. You show her be an irresponsible jackhat then expect us to root for her, it just doesn’t work like that. The Jenna/Jake plot was a bore for me, the Jenna stuff seems a little redundant. The only part of that plot I liked was the growth of KC (who at this point, is far more likable than Katie, Drew, Owen, and Marisol and doesn’t get nearly as much screen time.) And I could care less for the niners, and to be honest I find them to be annoying. I get that they are younger and that means they behave more childishly, but that doesn’t make them any less grating. And what a shocker, even Zig is musically inclined. Also what the hell is up with Zig, is he supposed to be stupid?
I also find the Owen line about adapting to be irritating considering he wouldn’t even wear a pink shirt.

The actors are just bad now, I feel your pain.
Katie’s storylines are forced and plain out terrible. People can say “well she’s new, you just have to get to know her character.” That’s not the case though. From the minute I saw a scene with Spinner, I knew I loved his character. The same goes for the likes of Sean, Craig, Marco, Paige, and even Ellie. It’s been a nearly a whole season and I feel no reason to become interested in the new character storylines. Honestly hoping Bianca steals back Drew from Katie because that’s the only way this scenario will be saved.
You could bring up that Chloe Rose is a horrible actress (she is) but Spinner was a terrible actor and that didn’t stop him from becoming possibly the most beloved character in the history of the Degrassi franchise. I’m hoping for a turnaround, but I highly doubt it happens.

I feel nothing for the character of Katie or the actress. The only time Katie was fun was during the first 2 episodes she was introduced being a bitch to Clare. Why couldn’t they have stuck with that writing? She is so bland and listless. I have absolutely no desire to root for her. You know you’re a horribly written character when I’m almost looking forward to seeing Clare again, aka the succubus of Degrassi.
Katie is certainly no Holly J or Paige Michalchuk. Are there any one-way tickets to Kenya available?

The thing with Katie is that when her character was first introduced, she looked so good on paper: a serious overachiever, who doesn’t put up with bull-crap from anyone. As ScottyB mentioned, that’s the way we saw her when she first appeared in those school paper scenes with Clare, where she was completely within her right for calling out Clare on not following instructions and then trying to cry her way into the job anyway instead of maturely apologizing and calmly asking for a permission to redo the assignment. Unfortunately, right after her introduction, Katie got mired down in the election battle with Marisol, the Drew drama, and most recently, the betrayal of Fiona and Imogen, none of which plots drew upon the strong overachiever parts of her personality. Personally, I would have enjoyed watching her struggle with balancing the million activities she is involved in, but this past episode is the first time we’ve ever seen even a hint of that struggle, and that only came after Fiona practically rubbed her nose into the fact that she’s been passing all of her presidential duties off to Marisol. That being said, her determination and desperation of achieving her dream are relatable. The problem is that they were written for the strong character Katie was originally envisioned as, not for the easily-swayed-to-betrayal character she’s been allowed to become. If her previous storyline had been about trying to balance soccer with other activities in her life (something that most viewers would have been able to relate to, since all of us struggle with multitasking at one point or another) instead of the betrayal thing, people would have been much more inclined to relate to her now.

Yeah, the acting is more uneven than ever, especially from the niners. I can overlook Lyle, Olivia, and Ricardo. But Alex, as the former Angie Jeremiah, should know better.
As for Katie, they just had to lump her with Drew because no girl can exist in Degrassi without boy trouble. Not even Fiona.

I’m assuming that Owen’s past homophobic actions were the result of him struggling to come to terms with his brother’s sexuality, and being uncomfortable and angry about it. I’m guessing that Tristan would have come out of the closet around then, given his age. I’m just giving the writers the benefit of the doubt.

I agree with your point about Zig. He’s just there. But it feels as if he has even less of a presence than Jake. He almost feels like a cardboard cutout, and I don’t think Ricardo is that good of an actor.

Finally caught up and , being a soccer player myself, I empathize with the emotions Katie was experiencing. Desperation can be such to the point that you will take the quick fixes, not caring about the side effects.
Big ups for Tristan stepping up like that. Little burn with the whole “he’s first in your life” dig. Good thing Tori and Zig wised up real fast, the performance was cool.
Fiona still smarting over the incident from unia, I would be too. Bad timing on the account of Katie under the stress that she was. Cofee?
I know Drew did not have a major part in this episode, but I give daps to him being a good boyfriend to Katie. The piggyback rides and just the whole supportive nature he showed was textbook on how you should treat your girl.
Lastly, KC/Jenna’s plot. Had to discuss this since I’m a writer. Good at the end of Jenna’s performance that they cleared the air and things are “cool” again between them. Quid pro quo- KC clearly mentions Jenna in his poem, but only because Jenna had planned to sing the song she eventually sung at the Coffee House. So he “beats her to it” by reciting the poem about Grenna and the monsters. It would’ve been better for KC to be more subtle about it because Jenna would’ve done the same in her performance, using less glaring adjectives and the like.

Why do the writers even bother giving Katie her own episode? I think the reason they put Katie’s character in the beginning of degrassi’s return is so they can get her boring useless plot done and over with. Ok, so maybe the plot isn’t useless and it focuses on important problems.However, Katie is uninteresting and the only part I loved with her was when Fiona was telling her off. Furthermore, I’m glad Degrassi writers haven’t just moved on from what Marisol and Katie did to Fiona.
I just hope that this is the end of A Plots involving Katie. In fact, I hope she gets pushed to being just a small filler in the show. She’s unimportant and the fact that she’s with Drew just makes Drew as unimportant as her.
I know this is like the 3rd week since Degrassi’s return, but I really want to stop seeing freshmen as filler’s. I want them to have their own A plot’s now because I’m finding that I’m getting bored with everyone else.

I feel as though the latest batch of freshmen are being integrated into the cast much more fluidly than the previous group (KC, Clare, Alli, Connor). Clare’s classmates had their own plots, including A plots, but they were very much isolated from the rest of the main cast, which really polarized the show. I like that the writers are involving Maya in Katie’s plot (and Katie into Maya’s plot in UIA), and Owen in Tristan’s plot. It allows the new kids to be assimilated into the show a lot more naturally and comfortably. It also enables them to develop more subtly, as they’re not very strong actors yet, and wouldn’t be able to handle dominant stories. And it lets longtime viewers gradually warm up to them, rather than having them thrown in their faces. Plus, we’re able to see more of the sibling dynamic at work, which we got very little of with the previous niners. Darcy was gone before she ever really got a chance to interact with Clare at Degrassi, and Sav and Alli, if I recall correctly, didn’t interact very much until later in season 8.

I think I put way too much stock in this episode. It was still really good, and I could feel Katie’s desperation, but I guess I don’t care about Katie enough to be completely heartbroken over her circumstances. I just couldn’t feel for her as much as I did when Fiona was relapsing. And I definitely think it has something to do with Katie’s lack of character development. She just doesn’t feel like a person to me yet.
That being said, Kary, I loved how you noted that they made a point to show how easy it is to enable. We can all talk about how we’d rat out a friend on drugs immediately, but when you’re a teenager, you don’t want to be the one responsible for getting a friend in trouble, even if it’s for their own good. That was just really brilliant on the writers’ part.
The family dynamics are also so wonderful right now; they’re such a joy to watch. I can’t express enough how much I adore Maya, and Tristan is definitely a favorite now. “I can’t compete with your lanky, dark-haired boyfriend,” hahaha. I don’t even care how cheesy his song is because his friendship with Tori is too adorable (even if she’s irritating as all hell). I’m definitely invested in these niners enough that I’ll still be following this show for at least five more years, haha.
Okay, they definitely have a little sad tune that goes along with every Kenna scene now, I swear. It just kills me, haha, they break my heart. And Grenna? K.C., you weren’t even trying, hahah. Jessica Tyler’s voice is still nails to a chalkboard for me, but I appreciate why Jenna had to do this; it’s her own way of coping, and I’m glad K.C. understood that. I like seeing a mature K.C. for once!
Also Fiona roasting Katie the way she did? I can’t even begin to explain how brilliant that was. That’s what I call an HBIC.
All in all, I think this was a solid B episode all around. And looking at next week’s promos, next week will be even better. Jenake will probably happen, but it looks so innocent that I’m inclined to say they’ll just be friends, if only for a little while.

I’ll be very interested if they address Tristan and his sexuality. I guess they sort of hinted he was comfortable, as he talked with Owen. And ps: Can we watch the ‘power play’ shorts anywhere? I somehow missed parts 2 and 3.

I personally would absolutely love a movie at the end of Season 11, or at some point, regarding a high school reunion for the Classes of 2006 (Marco/Ellie/Paige/Hazel)-A class Craig was also a member of until he left- and 2007 (Emma/Manny/Liberty/Toby/Spinner/Jimmy).

I loved part 2 compared to how i felt about part 1. I am getting very excited about Katie’s addiction and am also very glad it was not another Peter Plays with Meth plot. As for Jenna and KC I’m still waiting for more and this Jake and Jenna plot is going to make me lose my lunch Im sure of it. I had to give the niners a B ONLY because of the brothers interaction, i am loving it! But as for the rest…I am bored…by all of them and Im sorry but Alex’s acting is horrific! I’m hoping Zig ends up with like abusive parents or something.. thats my guess and what Im pushing for. I’m so over Cant Tell Me Nothing..I’m ready for the other characters. but I will say I was LOVING the KREW action…they arent my fav but this ep def made me love them!

In my opinion this was the best we’ve seen of Krew since that subplot they had in Take A Bow. I wasn’t engaged when they were on the screen in DAG, or during Nowhere to Run.

I do hope they get over this Tristain jealousy thing eventually so it doesn’t get old. Well I suppose it’s good a gay character can get a plot on this show other than something about his sexualitym (Now that I think about it, between Riley and Marco, then only plot either of them had not related to their sexuality was Marco’s gambling plot in “Sunglasses At Night”), I’d like to see them spend time showing Tristain dealing with what Owen is afraid of-Tristain being made fun of. Just also wanted to note that I really enjoy the interaction between Owen and Tristain
Perhaps my favorite part of Katie’s plot was the end, and the fact that they’re keeping the pill plot open. I personally enjoyed Just Can’t Get Enough, because I thought Peter’s plot was really intense, but wanted them to keep it going more than they did by giving us more of a feeling he would relapse. Start Me Up was another episode I liked, but I think it was kind of a given that he wouldn’t accept drugs from Victoria.
Anyone else find it odd that Jenna moved out of KC and his mom’s apartment before the school year ended and didn’t realize at all over the summer that she had left her song book there? Think about it… Let’s say she moved in with Alli in May… Why wouldn’t she figure out until next September when school started that she had forgotten her book?
It should be interesting to see an old rivalry renewed next week… First it was Jenna vs Clare over KC in “Heart Like Mine,” and now it’s over Jake. Should be interested if the intrigue from HLM still exists.
Last note: I’m excited to see Connor and Mo’s plot this Friday.

It’s been a while since I’ve participated in Your blog Kary, but I have been reading it.
Does anyone else believe that Alex Steele’s acting is a bit weak in comparison to et Angela Jerimiah says? Maybe it’s just the character (yes I have removed her completely from her previos character, the only thing I’m comparing is the acting).
Jake has a few funny lines, I think Justin Kelly is great with his comedic timing.
