PLOT A SUMMARY: Owen and Anya are on their first date…at a club. One of Owen’s friends offers Anya cocaine, and she decides to do it (Owen does not). The next day Anya confesses to her mom about here college situation, but Mr. Simpson says Anya has a shot at getting into a University other than TU. Owen convinces Anya to call the university and she gets a face-to-face interview.

At Holly J’s volleyball tournament, Owen overhears Holly J telling Anya that she’s too good for him. That night at the club, Owen is upset and tells Anya to stop hanging out with Holly J. Anya doesn’t like being bossed around by anyone, so she decides to do coke again. Owen’s disgusted with Anya’s behaving, and their relationship status is left unknown as he goes off on his trip to play hockey. Anya’s confidence continues to waver as she enters her admissions interview, and she decides to do coke to help her through the interview. She finds out she didn’t get accepted because her erratic behavior during the interview, and continues her path of doing coke and partying.

It started off very ho hum, but this storyline began to pick up the pace during the second half. Firmly making the cocaine Anya’s crutch was a plot-saving move. Though Owen served as a lite version of a moral compass, there’s still nothing between him and Anya that could make me ship them.

Part 1 and Part 2 have Anya dealing with two separate mentalities. In Part 1, she’s tired of feeling judged by everyone and just want to do whatever she wants. In Part 2, we see her trying to exist with her confidence completely destroyed…though one could argue that Anya’s never really been one to have much confidence to begin with.

Though the dark place she’s entering is unfortunate, it’s good that they’re not abruptly ending her behavior at the moment. I think what’s selling me on Anya’s storyline is that her self destruction was grown out of virtually nothing. She continues to dig a hole for herself despite there being no real reason for her to, and the damage she‘s causing is self contained. No one close to her (not Owen, Holly J, not her parents) know how much she’s hurting, or how quickly she’s spiraling out of control.

PLOT B SUMMARY: Charlie becomes more settled in at Fiona’s place, and introduces her cat, Mr. TuexedoPants. Fiona begins itching furiously, and Eli points out that she might have bed bugs. She has the place inspected and it’s confirmed bed bugs exists, and she blames Charlie for them. Then Fiona learns the bed bugs were her mom’s fault, and she apologizes to Charlie. The two become intimate and Charlie wants for them to have a fun night that includes drinking champagne. Fiona confesses to Charlie that she’s an alcoholic and is able to resist the temptation to drink. Fiona then tells Charlie that she realizes she’s not ready for a relationship, and kindly asks Charlie to move out.

Farlie’s plot leaves me torn. You’ve got a fantastic element of character growth embedded in what’s been a tedious, and ultimately pointless storyline. It’s hard to put much stock in a couple knowing that one of the characters is temporary. One could say Charlie was a plot device…a boring one at that. I understand that they had to go through the legwork of establishing a foundation for Farlie, they did nothing to make Farlie’s friendship/relationship enjoyable along the way. I didn’t even care that they became intimate, because I felt no chemistry.

I had started down my road of slowly giving up on Fiona (my current favorite character coming into Season 11) continuing to develop until the fantasic alcohol scene was introduced. The writers once again show that they’re not just dropping all issues into the abyss, AND they didn’t go with either of the predictable routes (her giving in and drinking, or her being strong enough to resist without flinching). The fact that she needed to call her mom immediately and realized she wasn’t strong enough yet showed more growth within her than what we ever would’ve gotten just by her figuring herself out by exploring her sexuality with a relationship with Charlie.

PLOT C SUMMARY: Connor continues to be obsessed with women’s panties, but now he’s decided to take pictures of them. While in the girl’s locker room Alli walks in, and he hides his identity and rushes out of the bathroom before she could see his face. Connor, Wesley and Hannah debut their clothing app and Alli recognizes clothing in the app…one of her shirts is featured. She puts two and two together and Principal Simpson confronts Connor. Connor confesses to taking pictures of women’s clothes and stealing panties. He’s suspended, but because of his Aspergers he’ll receive help understanding his hormones and how to function better socially.

I feel somewhat similar about Connor’s plot as I did with Farlie’s. It also gave me that “Ehhh I’m getting bored with this storyline” feeling up until the end, when Connor got caught. In some ways the ending was how I expected, with Connor not realizing the gravity of what he was doing, and not fully understanding his own emotions. AJ Saudin plays Connor well, and it’s about time they return an emphasis on his Asperger’s again.

  1. I’m willing to keep an open mind to see if Ownya continues to develop, but I think I may have already made up my mind. It’s kind of hard to attempt to enjoy a story when you don’t like one of the two. (I don’t ship any couples, so it’s not like I have an agenda or anything.)

I do wholeheartedly agree that it’s more about Anya than it is about Owen, and since I’ve been an Anya fan from just about the beginning, I’m curious to see where this storyline takes her.

  2. That’s a great point you brought up Kary, the writers seem to somehow be managing to keep HJ, Fi, and Anya apart from forming a real trio relationship. Hopefully they get it together for graduation so I can feel bad that they are leaving Fi behind for another semester.

  3. Really? REALLY?! The evidence against Connor is inconclusive at best. They can’t prove anything with that ugly top her grandma knitted her. Has she never worn it before? She’s had to have worn it at least once for it to be in her locker. I’d rather have him caught red-handed than Alli be Mrs. Sherlock Holmes.

    1. Degrassi does that alot. They practically ripped out a line out of Heathers (great movie btw), after Fitz stabs the wall. Heathers had a similar scenario of a fakeout.
They said: Can you bleach out urine stains?
He said: Don’t worry, you can bleach out urine stains.
Their line makes way more sense in the context but I was so happy when he said that.

I’m not sure I’m ready for a full-fledged coke-head Anya, but at least she spent the majority of the episode with Owen, so I wasn’t too worried about them tonight.

I could watch an entire half hour of Eli and Fiona. I loved that Eli wanted to hear more details about Fiona and Charlie’s night together, although, when did Eli and Fiona become so buddy buddy that she’s willing to share that info with him?

Really glad the Connor storyline came to a head tonight. Any longer and it would have dragged on for too long. I sure hope Connor isn’t gone completely from the show. I think we would have heard something by now, right? I guess they’ll never bring up Connor’s actual parents, eh? I’m telling you, it should have been Michelle and BLT from the original series!

  13. What a depressing end to Farlie. I never really liked them as a couple, but seeing Fiona just end it like that was like… damnit Fiona! Now, Charlie is gone of course, because it’s not like it’s possible to provide a shelter to another lesbian when you’re a lesbian even if you aren’t dating.. I know Fiona wasn’t ready, but kicking her out? Really? I kinda started liking Charlie.

Anya, oh Anya.. Is this plot over or is it going to continue? It just kind of ended.. I don’t even know if Ownya is broken up or not.. There’s definitely still a storyline needing to be done there…

  15. Like I said yesterday, Part 1 had me kind of bored, but I really enjoyed Part 2!

I liked Anya’s plot much more in this episode, and I think it’s because they took Owen out of the picture, and she did coke for an actual reason (lack of confidence for her interview because the jerk interviewing her was really mean for no reason), and then actual consequences were shown (her blowing the interview), and it wasn’t just about her relationship with Owen. Also, at the end of the episode, she did coke and went out to party again, so this coke storyline isn’t quite done yet, which is a good thing.

Fiona/Charlie’s plot was so boring to me last night, but tonight I was pretty content with it. I mentioned how I didn’t want Fiona to go through the alcohol thing in Part 2 because I didn’t want her to have to deal with the whole being an alcoholic issue for another season, but I’m happy about the mention of it and glad she acknowledged the fact that she isn’t ready to be around alcohol yet. I’m glad they did that without being too dramatic and having her start drinking again just for Charlie. It’s also good that she realized she wasn’t ready for a relationship and Charlie is finally gone! I also liked the Fiona/Eli interaction, and him asking for details, lol. I wasn’t too big on having Fiona and Charlie make out in the morning when they had just both awoken though, haha.

Lastly, I really enjoyed Connor’s plot! I felt really bad for him in that scene with Mr. Simpson, and I’m actually really sad to see him go. Hopefully, it won’t be for long!

  16. I highly doubt that Connor’s gone for good. If he were leaving the show, he’d have been expelled, rather than suspended with the promise that he’ll be back. But this little twist was needed, as the writers were running out of things to do with him. His behavior was becoming too extreme to allow him to have healthy relationships with anyone. The fact that he’s going to some sort of hormonal training sessions or whatever should be a BIG hint that the writers are going to use this plot point to write him into a relationship upon his return, and work on having him associate with other characters.

  17. Anya’s interview was less of a mess than Paige’s but I’m glad they aren’t dropping the coke head Anya plot so quickly! They should give coke to Anya every episode because she’s extremely entertaining.

Eli and Fiona’s relationship is interesting but I could care less. Fiona’s plot was a waste of space since it isn’t really going anywhere and it was extremely anticlimactic. It would of been better if Fiona drank some, then later that night she went crazy with the drinking or she starts to drink more later and her mom comes and catches her.

Conner’s plot was kinda sad, but AMAZING how AJ acts like he has Asperger’s so well. I felt legitimately bad for Conner. However it seems that this is the break corresponds with the break from Degrassi that AJ and Spencer were tweeting about in which they weren’t on set for like a month. So that’s actually kind of sad that this is pretty much it for Conner and Wesley this season.

We still have 4 more weeks left (18 episodes) so it’s possible they’ll show up towards the end of the season, maybe within the last 6 episodes. That could probably account for a month of not filming. I would hope they’d at least use them for any type of end of the year gatherings.

I do feel some bad problems brewing for Anya in the future. There is only, what, two months of school left for them? Doesn’t seem like much time in the Degrassi Universe for her to get her act together and graduate in top shape.

The Anya, Drew, and upcoming Holly J story lines have this setting up as a really good first part of season 11.

  27. Hmm what to say about Paper Planes?

As a whole I thought the story lines were a bit lackluster. Let’s start with Anya.
I have a truly hard time caring about Anya’s apparent demise into the world of coke because as a character her motivation for everything is so muddy. Other than follow Holly J around, cry because Sav won’t introduce her to his parents or pine after an uninterested doctor I have no idea why Anya does the things that she does…that is until Owen. Her dating him actually makes sense. She feels bad about herself and he’s the only person telling her how amazing he thinks she is, what doesn’t make sense- like many on here have already mentioned- is why Owen is so fascinated by Anya? What is it about her that he’s so drawn to? But in order to understand that we would have to know more about Owen than just that he is a creepy-homophobic-perv.

Now Farlie? I don’t know why this pairing’s name is so funny to me.
I thought the ending to Farlie was a bit abrupt however I was so happy that we were moving past Charlie being a main plot for Fiona’s character. I don’t really feel a connection between Fiona and Charlie & it seems like their always just talking about how much they like each other without any real emotion behind it. Last season when Fiona was in love with Holly J her emotions were palpable, when she and Holly J had that sleepover I literally felt how painful it was for Fiona to be in the same room with someone she loved so much but couldn’t have. I’m even more excited that Farlie is over because I am suuper excited/newly obsessed with Fiona and Eli’s budding friendship. I like that Degrassi is shuffling the social circles a lot more this season and parts of last. In recent Degrassi years we never saw a character outside of their main social group, which is somewhat a representation of what teens are like in high school but it’s also a bit one-dimensional. And it’s the little things like having Sav talk to Katie on Clare’s behalf that make the show more realistic. But back to Eli and Fiona, I really like this friendship. It definitely has the potential to be the new age version of Ellie and Marco in reverse. But something that I’m curious about timeline wise- and I guess we won’t know until Eli has a major storyline again- is a lot of time supposed to be lapsing during the course of these episodes? Because Eli is no longer walking around with his cane, his hair is shorter and he looks and is acting like a normal person. I just really hope that it doesn’t become everytime Eli has a scene with Clare or Imogen he becomes Mr. Crazy Pants and then with everyone else he’s back to normal. I think Munro Chambers is a really good actor because he gets the subtleties of Eli and he’s just enjoyable to watch when he’s breaking a computer monitor as when he’s asking for the details of Fiona’s girl-on-girl hook-up.

Lastly Connor. For some reason his exit had an air of finality to it. I didn’t think much of the suspension until Wesley asked him “Will I ever see you again?” It made me stop and think” Wait. Will we see Connor again? I get that Asberger’s causes Connor to be slower socially than everyone his age and I think the writer’s portray that accurately but when set against the backdrop of all the other characters storylines Connor’s character seems to drag. The whole stealing panties thing really made me think of JT and Toby in the early years with the whole penis pump fiasco for some reason. I just think that they need to upgrade Connor a little bit so that he doesn’t get lost in all the other Degrassi drama. Hopefully we’ll see more of him next season since it seems he won’t be making a return.

Sorry the post was so long!

Anya-like someone previously stated i like coke head Anya lol she seem more relaxed i thought her interview went well hell she answered all the question yeah she was a lil jittery but that could have been from excitement or nervousness but him calling her out like oh you seemed like you was on drugs ..i don’t like how they making it seem like if she don’t get in school now she will have ruined her life i mean jeesh people take years off she can just apply for the next semester that crazy unless its different in Canada…Grade A

Farlie- i think im the only one that liked them they was so cute to me. the writers didnt let them build like Paige and Alex . i felt Fiona used charlie she called her a dirty bug carrying bum then slept with her then tossed her out like wam bam i got what i been craving for now you gots to go!. i don’t see why alcohol was the deal breaker? so Charlie couldn’t drink around her i don’t think that would have been a problem especially if she would have known but nooo she had to cut off the 5 sec relationship and kick the poor girl out. … fi’s on my ugh list right now its like everything has to be her way in order for her to function. however i do like the fiona and eli friendship they mesh well like marco and eli… Grade C-

Connor- poor Connor i knew it was going to come to this… how they caught him was so 48 hrs got snitched on by his own friends made it worst. i still think he could of said he saw ali with the shirt on and took the pic. do you know how many crazy pic i twitpic of people looking a hot mess without they knowledge lol. i died laughing when somebody reminded me that he knocked ali down before… like in norbit when restabusha knocked the lady down with that “move bitch” line lol thats what came to my mind when he ran out..i like how they sugar coated it like yeah you got a problem its not your fault we going to get you help but you gots to go… degrassi just giving everyone the boot today… hopefully when he come back they will give him a lil swagger transform him to geek to sheek like they do all the nerds.. jt , double D , clare, i think toby the only one that kept his dorkish look the whole 4 yrs

  31. I liked that this plot was more focused on Anya than Ownya. I despise the couple, and basically any relationship Anya’s ever been in, so it’s nice to see her a part of a plot that isn’t focused on her romantic endeavors. She has too many of those and too few real story lines. If nothing else, this has all been great character development for Anya, which she (and her actress Samantha Munro) so rightly deserve, seeing as this is her last year at Degrassi.

I’m just left wondering how much farther down Anya’s going to spiral before she gets a real wake up call. Her mentality right now must be she has nothing left to lose, so she’s basically capable of doing anything, a prospect that’s exciting as far as story drama’s concerned.

Good riddance to Charlie. Fiona’s character is too good for some vapid relationship with a temporary character. I’d rather her time be focused on making real friends, say with Eli? The only interesting part of her plot these past two episodes was her interactions with him. If she and Eli get closer, I hope her experience with mental instability will help show Eli that there is a healthy way of coping.

I’ll be devastated if this episode brings about a long hiatus of Connor. AJ Saudin was finally able to display his acting chops, and I want to see more of that!

Of course, the lesbian in me was super excited for Farlie in this episode, and I was completely let down. It seemed anti-climactic to me, although I did like, as you said, Fiona’s minor growth from her near-relapse into alcoholism. I hope that Charlie will still be around, but it seems futile to expect to see her again.

And, of course, although a minor subplot, I liked Connor’s storyline. It’s bringing him back into the drama while keeping it a little less serious with his and Wes’ humor.

I thought she had an interesting personality (she posed nude in her introduction to us!) and seemed to be a no b.s. type of person. And I think Fiona always strives when she surrounds herself with those types of people (Holly J, her mother, etc.).

They CAN do a great job sometimes of bringing in outside characters and fully fleshing them out…remember Griffin with AIDS? So I am disappointed that they got rid of Charlie so quickly…and if they tried to be friends before, why couldn’t they just continue to be friends and Charlie will let Fiona grow up a little?

I think that Fiona’s exploration of her sexuality has been important for her character. Though I hope to see her in a relationship with a new student at Degrassi, next season. Rather than establishing her character as a lesbian to please LGBT viewers, and just shrug it off, the writers have REALLY been pushing her sexuality (but not in a lewd way). She’s been very vocal about her affection for girls. Her first kiss with Charlie was among the hottest make-out scenes in the show’s history, a far cry from the chaste little pecks shared between Palex in season 5/6 (also, am I the only person who thought that Lauren Collins always looked majorly uncomfortable during those kisses? She’d sort of purse her lips, amirite?).

What’s really nice about Degrassi’s lesbian characters is that they are treated like any other relationships. The thing that causes a rift between two queer female characters is not an unwillingness to accept one’s sexuality (I’m looking at YOU, Riley), but just typical relationship stuff. While initially, Palex drama was a little about Paige’s discomfort with the idea of dating a girl, what eventually did them in was an issue of class. With Farlie, first there was reluctance on Fiona’s part not because she was uncomfortable WITH her lesbianism, but because it was new to her, and she wanted to take it slow. Then it turned into an issue of class (bed bug infestation, which turned out not to be Charlie’s fault), until finally, it was Fiona’s own problems with alcohol that convinced her that she needs to be on her own for a bit. So kudos to the writers for treating their lesbians like “everyone else”!

  36. I LOVED Anya’s plot, I think it’ll definitely go somewhere .
Charlie and Fiona – I honestly didn’t have much interest in it at all .
& As for Connor , to be honest I’m always interested in anything that he is in, just for the fact that he has Asperger’s and I have an autistic brother.
& The way they had Connor react when getting in trouble – Pushing to get out and yelling that same thing over and over again, that’s exactly what my brother would have done in a situation like that. Except – my brother has a bit of a temper and may have actually smacked/hit/punched the guy for standing in his way. Not in an intentional? way though. Like, he would have felt really badly afterwards. I think that with Connor , they should make him a bit more like that, because my brother’s autism isn’t even that bad, and he acts worse than Connor.
    Annyywayyy, just my opinion.
I can’t wait to watch tonight!

With the Farlie, I know I always want Fi to get with someone because of her lonliness, but it seems like Degrassi is becoming a relationship show & its kinda “jumping the shark” a bit (don’t know if this is true but i didn’t know how t put it). Its taking away from what the show was built on a bit, a show where every person can relate to & not every person is gonna be or need to be in a relationship. They have actors who have no chemistry becoming couples & they have the writers creating boring storylines for what? To just have all their characters (but poor Connor) coupled up. Sorry for my little rant & i might incorrect but that’s just how I feel.

  38. That scene at the volleyball game when Holly was trashing Owen to Anya was hilarious…just the expressions on all the character’s faces as it was going down made me really laugh…and I really like Anya and Owen as a couple, it was good to see Holly get what was coming. (FYI you can watch that scene at http://vimeo.com/27267798)

So happy to hear they used the song “Sound the Alarm” by Shapes of Race Cars during that scene, too…it has that perfect, almost pep-rally feel that fit the volleyball montage perfectly.
