First off, what did everyone think about the 4-plot format for the episode? I think I liked it here. As a whole the episode was only fairly strong, but having so many moving parts made mediocre plots seem less overbearing and the solid ones more concise than they would normally be if there had been just two or three plots. They’re also showing off the fact that they’re keeping us updated on ongoing plots (Drianca) and setting up for their future installments, without having to dedicate much screen time to them. I consider that a plus.

I don’t really wanna review these plots yet since most of them are being continued in Idioteque (What’s My Age Again and Idioteque are basically Part 1 and 2), but whatev.

PLOT A SUMMARY: Anya about to turn 18 and can’t wait so she can date Dr. Chris. But there’s a problem…Dr. Chris plans on going to Kenya for a year after receiving a job there. Anya doesn’t get into Toronto U and decides she should try to go with Dr. Chris to Africa. However, she realizes she’s being overeager when Dr. Chris points out that the barely know each other. Fiona and Holly J throw Anya a surprise birthday party, and the episode ends with her and Owen hooking up in a bed.

I wasn’t that big of a fan of this plot as a whole. Anya’s behavior seemed a little too unrealistic at times. For instance, you don’t get into college and respond “Oh well that’s ok, I’ll just go with my soon-to-be boyfriend to Africa.” It’s yet another case of “Ellie Nash Syndome,” when a girl on the show just loses her damn mind over a guy to the point where she behaves like a completely different person.

The entire Dr. Chris thing has just been silly since the beginning. I don’t like it when they try to make characters establish relationships with people so far outside of Degrassi’s core universe…Dr. Chris is basically on an island by himself.

I need to make it clear that I DO NOT SHIP OWNYA after watching this episode. However, I do like the scenario that they’re in. I’m emotionally conflicted because their hookup at the end felt random and rushed, but I also acknowledge that that’s the entire point…we respond to Ownya by saying “WTF?” now, and Anya will be saying it in Idioteque.

**************

PLOT B SUMMARY: Connor has taken a liking to staring at girls’ chests….specifically Hannah’s. Wesley informs Connor that he can’t do that, and tries to help get Connor a girlfriend…sort of. Basically they go to Anya’s birthday party together, and Wes tells Connor to find a girl to talk to. He tries and fails to talk to Fiona. He runs into FiFi’s bedroom and happens to come across her underwear drawer. Intrigued by the panties, Connor takes them and leaves after almost getting caught by Anya.

At first I was slightly disappointed because this plot doesn’t have the extreme creeper vibe I was hoping for (I mean him sniffing Fiona‘s panties would‘ve been one of the most hilarious scenes ever), but it does a really good job of showing us exactly how socially awkward Connor is. It’s just very interesting to me watching someone who has little concept of what is considered socially acceptable, and lacks an ability to interact with new people normally (Fiona). The humor factor also returned to the Tenners because Connor did throw out a couple of unintentionally funny lines on his part.

**********************

PLOT C SUMMARY: KC feels trapped at home with Jenna and Tyson. To get out of the house, he makes up an excuse to go get diapers. Seeing that there’s a part-time job opening at Little Miss Steaks, he applies in the hopes of getting the job so he doesn’t have to be on baby daddy duty during the evening time.

See? Why couldn’t there have been a Kenna plot like this in LoveGame? They go from a ho hum plot to one with an actual hook, because we FINALLY get a true sense of what direction KC’s character is going in this storyline. It’s established that KC is, once again, going down the path of being a jackass.

However, it’s the way he’s doing it that’s so brilliantly written. He feels so trapped that instead of just blatantly disregarding Jenna to go do whatever he wants, he’d rather have a job as an excuse to get out of the house and avoid his responsibilities as a father. Now how sneaky is that?

*******************

PLOT D SUMMARY: Drew learned that his self-defense claim in Anson’s death will probably hold up, and Vince is in police custody. Drew thinks he and Bianca are home free, but learns that Vince has been released. Drew’s mom blames everything on Bianca and her past, while Drew just wishes things could go back to the way they were.

This plot wasn’t sufficient enough in this episode to give it any sort of grade. It really served as nothing more than a setup for Drianca’s larger role in Idioteque.

  3. I think Owen and Anya will make a cute couple! And I think Anya may be raped in tonight’s episode. Maybe Anya didn’t want Dr. Chris to spend the night in that certain way, and he did… That would explain her crying, and would maybe cause her to resort to drugs (And possibly Owen?) to help her deal with it… in a stupid way, but a very realistic way, though.

I’m always interested in Kenna! I used to hate them as a couple in season nine. But, they’ve actually grown on me. I felt bad for Jenna in LoveGame, and I thought it was sweet when KC asked Jenna to move in.

  8. I agree with Kary. KC and Jenna, their plots are meh. I don’t ever look forward to their plots and therefore I don’t expect much. I think last night was about the best they can deliver given Miss Piggy’s limited acting abilities and KC just blah.

KC and Jenna are getting what “chirps.” To compare it to professional wrestling…wrestlers who get the chirps are those that no one cares about and are likely fired. If a wrestling gets a huge standing ovation, that means people care. Likewise, if a wrestler gets loud boos, that means that the wrestler matters as well. People love to hate them.

Then there’s Chantay who people don’t love to hate, but just HATE which is even worse than getting chirps.

Sorry if none of you are professional wrestling fans, but that’s the best comparison I can give as to why Jenna and KC are no kinda good.

Absolutely nothing about that show was even relateable, nor did it reflect my high school experience (or anyone I know, for that matter). Degrassi is by far the best show on TV geared for teens.

Hey, Kary, thanks for the clarification. I was wondering if the review grade was based on the episode at hand, or your general impression of the characters, and now you’ve come clean and admitted that it doesn’t matter what’s on screen in a given episode, your mind’s already made up based on who’s in the story. That’s cool. Good on you for admitting it.

The reason for the confusion, I think, is that instead of just admitting that in the first place, you pretended your review was right by calling the Kenna story bad and including a story chart, suggesting the show could learn from it. This was an insult to everyone who watched the episode and knew there was a good story and simply a distraction from and weak justification for your C- grade. I think you knew that, too, which is why you jumped on responding to my comment so quickly after I posted it.

I like your reviews, generally. A lot, actually. I visit the site often. But I think you have to decide whether you’re just a fan ranting, or an actual reviewer talking about and dissecting individual episodes. If you’re just a fan ranting, cool. I’ll pay less attention. If you’re a reviewer, I think you should take a more neutral stance, step back from your ships and favourites, and evaluate each episode as a whole. I think you’d also take a lot less flack if you didn’t grade the episodes. Just write intelligent commentary and offer things up for debate. It will make things seem less negative and leave you less open to attack. More positivity in the world can only be a good thing, right? Maybe check out some of Sepinwall’s TV reviews as a guide.

You could be a great reviewer Kary. I know it. This is your chance to step up your game.

No but seriously Kary’s reviews are usually spot on, like just go back to the episode and watch and you’ll probably feel the same. Also Kary isn’t that biased, if you noticed Kary hated the hell out of Drianca but gave a Drianca plot an A+ on Monday. If he were biased he would of found a way to thrash on them. Similarly to last night where Kenna was okay-ish. It is true that maybe Kary did give them a super harsh grade (C-) but there wasn’t much redeeming factors for the plot. It’s all basically setup for now until Marisol comes into the picture which will be soon.

Regardless don’t tell Kary how to review, it’s called KARY’S Degrassi Blog for a reason.

    5. No, you ASSUME that I believe my review is “holier than thou,” and you assume that I believe it’s the only right opinion simply because I have a platform to post my review to an audience. I wasn’t pretending anything, though it’s ironic that you continue to talk as if your view on Kenna’s plot is the only right one. When will you people learn there is no right opinion when it comes to these reviews? I don’t care if people disagree with my view of an episode, but it’s completely different when people come at me with an “if you’re not with me, you’re against me and that means you are insulting my opinion by default…how dare you” attitude. If I had just said a sentence or two about how I loved Kenna’s plot I can guarantee we wouldn’t be having this discussion about my “lack of intelligent commentary.”

And if you’ve truly been reading my reviews over the last few years you’d clearly know that I don’t “have my mind already made up” based on who’s in the episode. Yep, you would’ve seen the times I did things like bash Wesley plots even though he’s one of my favorite characters, hated Fiona but grew to adore her the course of an entire season, and got tired of Alli plots but still love her when she’s in a supporting character role. You would also know that I:

      1) Currently don’t have any ships to step back from, and haven’t had any since Parcy
      2) My “favorite” character or characters on the show shifts from season to season
      3) I purposely interject sarcasm into my reviews and general commentary.

I was obviously being over-the-top sarcastic in adding the chart, just to hammer the point home of how bored I was with the plot.

I don’t care if I receive flack about my grades of the episodes, but it becomes annoying when people start taking things too seriously, as if this were a professional website and I’m getting paid lots of money to write about Degrassi (I’m not by the way). The entire point of the grading system is to get other people to think about the reasons why they would give a plot a certain grade. I don’t need to decide whether “I’m just a fan ranting or an actual reviewer talking about and dissecting individual episodes,” you need to stop trying to assume that I’m one or the other. I’m a guy posting his thoughts on a freakin blog…this isn’t Sepinwall’s TV, nor am I some guy trying to be the next Roger Ebert. The demographic of the people who come to this blog is FAR different from those who go to his site. I can’t be neutral because people that come here want to know whether or not I like or dislike something…STEPHEN STOHN has even said he enjoys all commentary good and bad because they go to the effort of reading everyone’s opinions to see what works and what doesn’t. I’d be doing them a disservice if I just decided to beat around the bush and give cardboard reviews. When I post my reviews I’m not forcing my opinion down anyone’s throats, though people like to assume that’s what I’m doing only when I say something they don’t like. No one is obligated to come to this website. My opinion is no more relevant than the next Degrassi fan’s, mine just happens to be seen by thousands of people a day.

    6. This is a blog and a blog is a place where people express their opinions. It isn’t a place where the Blogger mandates that his opinion control the way the readers think– if that were the case there would be no comments section. That said, I find it very interesting that you come on here and tell someone to approach reviewing from a “neutral” stance when you, as a reader, cannot do the same (while reading this blog). No one is asking you to agree with what the guy has written but a “neutral” person is someone who considers ALL perspectives and understands that, regardless of his/ her own opinion, these perspectives are very accurate. It’s like asking five people to describe the sky at sunset– one might say it’s orange while another might say pink– but they are BOTH right. Everything is about perception and everyone is allowed his/ her opinion. It doesn’t threaten the way that you think or perceive, but it can give you a little insight you might not have had before you read it. Advice?? Be aware– it’ll help you understand that what others put out won’t change the way you think– unless YOU let it.

Perhaps the Degrassi writers are planning to show us that not everything is as it seems. Just like with Dr. Chris– people might have thought he was sweet for considering Anya but, then we find out he was never serious at all. I have always felt that Owen’s attitude is all a front. The Homophobia, the physical indecency- there is something going on there and Anya might be the one to blow it wide. Personally, I look forward to it because I’d like to see more of Daniel Kelly.

  39. I totally get where you are coming from Kary. It’s not like Kenna happens to be the worst Degrassi couple ever, but the way I think of them, is simple.

They aren’t the brightest or quickest couple and nothing really sticks out about them being together. We go into a Kenna episode knowing that KC is going to be slow, Jenna is going to be emotionally put up with him and they are going to fight, hug, and move on with their lives. We ALREADY know that KC is going to blow Jenna off for his friends and basketball and as endearing as his Mom is, we know she is going to talk sense into him and that a hypothetical, dull lightbulb is going to show a small spark in the recesses of his hollow head.

They’re predictable at best and their plots never quite seem to hit the top of the upward, climatic slope.

What did make the episode so special, though, was the fact that Jenna’s emotional scenes are better than they were last year (by far) the only thing that made me interested in their part of the episode (besides that adorable baby<3) was the fact that Jenna's slow tears looked genuine and her crying at the end when excited about moving in with KC had my heart in all sorts of odd places.

Sometimes I try to think of plots that the characters could take on in a future episode that I think would be interesting. Unfortunately, I can't really picture Kenna taking any approach other than their predictable ones, because as actors, they flat out don't dominate the stage together. Their presence lacks because of this. Last year during EClare, there were a lot of intense scenes that involved Paul and Chambers just sharing one glance that seemed to summarize everything that they were feeling together. Those small glances have more of an emotional effect than any of the Kenna scenes that involve crying and dialogue to aid them. I can't imagine getting anything out of a 30 second clip of them sharing some eye contact (and nothing else)

I like how Degrassi’s writers are finally setting up story lines properly with the whole KC/Marisol thing (meeting at work) as opposed to having the story fall out of the sky. KC’s really been getting on my nerves with this whole baby thing. Yes, I know he’s 15 and still a kid, but so is Jenna and she’s not slacking off.

You don’t just post spoilers and expect everyone to go along with it!
At least put a warning sheesh.

Regardless now that some of these plots have been shoved in my face by force, I’m not even excited for the few I saw. This season doesn’t seem as good as boiling point from a episode description standpoint. Fiona already seems to be going into the Riley route for sexuality. No one likes Dave so why do the writers put him and Alli (who have both fallen from great potential in Season 9) together? This season is just a fail so far, tonight’s decrease in episode quality was proof this season won’t be as great as the boiling point. This just might be In too Deep Part 2 except less wait time between bad episodes :\

    5. Phew, this isn’t nearly as spoilerific as those MuchMusic episode descriptions. A lot can still happen. I KNEW Drianca wasn’t going to last. Drew/Katie doesn’t come as that much of a surprise, considering there’s that promo picture of Drew, Katie, and Marisol together. And it’s good to know that Marisol will have a storyline apart from Kenna.

  46. Cool episode, but I think that if they are pulling this off as a 1-part episode, it sucked. Hopefully “part 2” or Idioteque is much better. I thought the idea of doing 1-part episodes were only having 2 plots due to lack of screen time. Having 4 plots in one episode was just a general mess. I don’t even know which was the B and C and D. All I knew was Anya had the A plot, and everything else seemed generally rushed.

If Idioteque doesn’t end up being much of a part 2 episode, then I think I can crown this episode the worst of the Now or Never (so far) or this week. Spring Fever was amazing and when LoveGame lived up to expectations, I got really excited but this wasn’t.. It wasn’t that good. I bet if they put on “Whats my Age Again? part 2” instead of just “Whats my Age Again?” I would feel better about the episode because that would be a clear indication that tomorrow’s episode is a followup and not just an episode with the same plots but (possibly) re-arranged.

I feel like Drianca got no screen time. There was like what, 3 scenes with them? Kenna just got a B plot yesterday, it didn’t exactly need today’s plot, especially since I don’t quite remember it but I bet it was pretty useless (not hating on Kenna, I liked their plot yesterday). The whole Connor thing wasn’t completely random. I’m glad they are giving subtle hints about his Aspergers instead of just making him some weird kid who stares at his best friends girlfriends boobs..

  47. This episode was alright, not spectaular, but not terrible. Each plot was just a set up for later plots. And what was with 4 plots in 22 minutes?? A bit much. But they were all just for setup.

On to the next episode descriptions:

The biggest thing that stands out to me is Drew/Katie/Marisol. So Drianca is over soon obviously. And Karisol doesn’t last long either. But why is it that Drew always goes for the girls Adam was into. First Bianca, then Fiona, and now possibly Katie. I bet that Adam and Katie are friends but Adam wants more. Katie doesn’t like Adam in the same way and instead tries to get Drew. During that prom scene, when Adam looks at Katie kind of shocked, Katie probably asks if Drew’s watching and that breaks Adam heart. But I’m also thinking that maybe Krew (?) doesn’t last long because Drew wants more physical activity. Can I just say how annoying it is that Adam never gets a girl.

    1. Holy crap. I completely forgot about Kadam. Is there any indication if that happens before or after Krew (lol what a ridiculous ship name)? And I agree, Adam is the most stand up guy in Degrassi, he deserves the girl.

  49. Yeah, I thought four plots was a bit much. It didn’t give much time for each story to develop properly. I felt there should have been a bit more build up to the Anya/Owen hook-up, it felt a bit rushed.

Connor’s plot was, interesting to say the least. I thought the scene of him in Fiona’s bedroom was creepy. I wonder where this storyline will go tomorrow.

Drew/Bianca, well there wasn’t much too it, just pretty much an update on Monday’s storyline. Although, it will definitely be picking up tomorrow.

KC/Jenna bore me. They had a plot last night that I could care less about, and once again they had a plot tonight that I could care less about. I don’t even know if the whole Marisol/KC affair will make things interesting, to be honest. Their characters just bore me, but I guess we’ll see. I just would rather see less of these two.

  53. Seriously? Four plots? Who thought that was a good idea? Episodes already get cluttered enough by three, but FOUR?

After the past two episodes, which were more than solid, tonight was obviously a bit of a letdown. I wasn’t expecting much from it anyway, considering it was mainly centered around Dr. Cranya. This episode also just seemed to function as a way to set up future plotlines like LoveGame, but unlike LoveGame, it felt like such filler.

I’ve grown to love Anya, but every time she’s involved with a guy, she ALWAYS does something stupid without fail. Ugh, she really needs to use her head a little more. The Ownya hook up makes sense, only because she’s vulnerable. Still holding my breath on whether or not Ownya will actually become a legit couple.

Interested in seeing just how far Connor’s strangeness will go. They don’t focus on him enough, so I’m eager to see what’s next.

I don’t understand where Drew’s getting this whole “Bianca’s changed!” bullshit from. Because I don’t see much of a change other than she’s become less of a snarky bitch.

Also don’t understand how K.C.’s getting this fed up being a baby daddy ALREADY. It’s been what, only a few weeks since Tyson’s been born? What’s wrong with him? Maybe it has to do with the fact K.C. never had a father figure, so he has no idea what one’s supposed to be like. I just can’t believe the writers keep doing this to K.C.’s character, do they want us to hate him after every time he redeems himself a little?

  54. Why is it that Adam keeps getting stepped on by girls? First Bianca threatens to kill him, then Fiona uses him for his body to hide her sexuality, and now Katie (probably unintentionally) breaks his heart and likes Drew. Perhaps Katie even uses Adam to get to Drew??? It is Degrassi, anything is possible.

But I don’t buy Drianca just being over just like that. I feel like there is already too much invested in that couple to just break them up and have Drew move on. Even though Bianca comes back later, I still think that it’s too much just to end because Drew is scared.

Guys do that to us – and to someone like Anya, who used to be a lot weaker than she is. It’s still possible for it to happen to her – not every girl is as strong as a fucking rock.

From a girl’s perspective, I’m sure she knew it was a big deal to not get into college. But she couldn’t process that – she quickly found an alternative: a cute guy. It was just a classic act of avoidance – but something realistic because, as I said, I would have done the same thing.

  62. I was actually pleased with this episode. I am excited to see what happens with Owen and Anya. I enjoyed their s/l in s10 and knew they would explore this more!! I think that right now Anya is just looking for a rebound but she’ll end up liking him. I don’t know how long they will last as Anya is graduating but they would make a great couple. It’s something different and fresh for once.

I don’t care what Conner does as long as he’s in the episodes. Though the underwear thing is a tad bit creepy. I feel like him and Wesley weren’t in s10 very much so it’s great seeing both. Jenna and KC…always found them boring but it’s interesting to see where this new stuff will go. KC seriously needs to mature more, lol. He’s not being the best father at the moment. Drew and Bianca…great seeing an update even if it was a small one.

I find it a nice change of pace how they are including a lot more of the cast in an eppy even if it’s just for a brief moment. Alos, great hearing Imogen’s name being mentioned today. Since starting on Monday we’ll get the part 1 and part 2 format again they should continue to use that to their advantage. Have some of the cast walk in the halls, like they had in the beginning of Love Game. That transition was done beautifully. I mean they don’t have to this in every eppy but not having characters on the show for a while, like Zane and Riley, makes you even wonder if they’re still at Degrassi, lol.

  63. There was absolutely no need for the Drew/Bianca story last night. They had the entire premiere episode and will be getting ample airitme tonight. Not that I’m against the 4 plots, because I thought it has potential to work well, but I would have preferred more time spent on Connor and KC/Jenna’s story. Just my personal preference.

I can’t believe I am finally coming around to Jenna, because she was instantly hated the second she started and it had nothing to do with breaking up KC/Clare. I don’t even ship couples. I just enjoy the stories as they progress, but Jenna was written really flaky and annoying with her singing and blatant flirting. She’s finally getting some substance and involved with a mature plot, so the material works for her. I’m really enjoying KC/Jenna’s developing storyline as teen parents more than I expected, despite wanting to ring KC’s neck every time he tries to avoid parental duties.

The Connor thing is weird, but then again since Connor suffers from social awkwardness, it’s not too far out of the realm of possibilities why he would be unable to interact with a member of the opposite sex. I mean, he didn’t even realize his ROD chick last season was coming onto him until the very last second. If followed through properly (most likely in C plots), it has the basis of being a good story throughout the season.

Did anyone else laugh when Chantay bragged about updating her status indicating university acceptance? Does she not realize she’s never getting out of Degrassi? She’ll be the only senior who has a child entering the 9th grade come season 25.

  64. The only thing I’m scared about is if the plot setup continues in Idioteque. Drianca got like 3 scenes in this episode and they have to write out Vince, it’s not like he’s a recurring character or anything (at least I don’t think so), I’m expecting him to written out soon. It’s going to be a terrible ending to a plot that once was good if Drianca takes the back-seat again and just gets wrapped up in a split second. I was like “what?” when I saw yesterday’s episode – Drianca was just a waste of time. They shouldn’t have even dedicated a plot to them. They should have just had a scene in the beginning of Idioteque where Bianca goes to Drew and says “I’m so happy you’re out! But I heard they can’t keep Vince in custody” and BOOM!, we know Drew is safe but Vince is out there somewhere.

At the end in fiona’s room I thought that Anya saw him but I guess not. I like Jenna and K.C. I know that tons of people don’t but I think that Jenna is trying as hard as she can and K.C. can sometimes be less of a jackass and sometimes he is actually decent (he does have to put up with a lot of Jenna’s crap). First, I don’t like the way K.C’s character is jerked around. Its like one minute we are supposed to believe hes the good guy and the next he’s a total jerk who doesn’t want to take care of his kid. I wish the writers would choose a personality for him and stick with it, because right now when there is a Kenna storyline i fall asleep. Second, did anyone ever notice that K.C. pratically cheats on Clare with Jenna and now he’s going to cheat on Jenna with Marisol? Its like his character just bounces from girl to girl to girl. I think this episode was a good intro to Ownya though. I am looking forward to seeing what is next from them, hopefully it doesnt turn into a Peter/Mia situation though. Drew and Bianca will be interesting too. LOVE your bolg Kary!
