Spinner must be back...BOYCOTT THE CAF!!!!!!

–

PLOT A: Declan’s is shocked when he find out Holly J’s feelings about the night of the party.

"I thought this'd be a happier moment." So did we, Declan.

After Declan and Holly J hook up, the after effects are completely different for each of them.  Declan is the happiest guy alive, and thinks he and Holly J are back together.  He even decides that he’s going to re-enroll at Degrassi.  Holly J?  Not so much.  She’s upset by it all, much to Fiona’s surprise.  The bigger shocker (to Fiona) is when Holly J says that she felt pressured into sleeping with Declan the night before.

Upon hearing this news, Declan is beyond horrified, believing that Holly J thinks he raped her, and after attempting to talk to a then-resistant Holly J, he decides to leave for good.

But wait, Holly J wonders why he’s going to leave without saying goodbye…she says felt pressured that night, but doesn’t think it was totally his fault, or that he raped her.   Boy do we have ourselves an interesting situation here; the only sure things are that Holly J got accepted to Yale, and she doesn’t have a romantic interest in Declan anymore, whose plan is to now just “go back to where he came from.”

Stefan Brogren did a fantastic job directing this episode with Degrassi’s two strongest actors.  This plot steps outside of the clichéd storyline about sexual assault, and delivers something intended to  make viewers equally as confused as Holly J was.

STORYLINE RECAP
********************

Part Two of this storyline completely sold me.  Take away watching any promos that told you what would happen in Part Two and I never would’ve guessed the storyline would go down like that.  I love, love, LOVE that this is the kind of plot that can create an intense debate.  For me, Holly J’s confusion about how she felt about that night only muddled any clear-cut thoughts about the situation within my head.  And there’s also the fact that we can’t forget to analyze Declan’s intent.  The difference between this show and real life is that during this plot we had an omniscient view of the story.  In real life we only have our view (if we’re involved), and if we’re spectators we only received a person’s perceived view.

My point is that even though without a doubt Declan should’ve been listening to Holly J, I can’t place him in the same category of Dean and the guy that raped Darcy (the kinds of guys I’d beat down if I saw them walking down the street).  Don’t take this as me  justifying his behavior in the situation, because I’m not.  If you’re a guy and you’re in that kind of situation with a girl, it is YOUR responsibility to be aware of what’s going on.  And if there’s even the slightest resistance or concern (on your part or the girl’s), you have to stop.  People still bitch about how glamourized Degrassi has become, but underneath that is an episode like this still serves as an amazing discussion piece, not only for fans, but families and classrooms as well.  There’s a handful of storylines that if anyone who has never watched Degrassi asked me what they should watch, I would suggest to them without question.  This storyline has been added to the list.

PLOT B: Clare keeps acting out, hoping it will stop her parents from doing the inevitable.

SMDH.

Still on a quest to “act out” so that her parents will have some sort of common thread (as opposed to them being on opposite sides and fighting constantly), Clare gets the wonderful idea to invite Eli over for dinner with her parents.  She uses Eli as a pawn in her game, pointing out things about him and his personal life that he knows her parents would object to (his dad’s job as a shock jock, and him being an atheist).  However, Eli’s not down with that…and it doesn’t work anyway seeing as how at the end Clare’s parents tell her they’re getting a divorce.

I really didn’t like this plot in Part 2 as much as I thought.  Eli was actually pretty great, but watching Clare act out was borderline ridiculous.  When she showed up at Degrassi in her punk (or goth, I don’t know what it is anymore) attire, that was too much.  It’s not the fact that she was intentionally acting out of character….the story just seemed to morph into a rushed cliché, with Aislinn looking like she was over acting a bit.

STORYLINE RECAP
********************

I know I gave this plot an A- in Part 1, but in Part 2 everything seemed to just go downhill.  As I said in the Part 2 review, this portion of Clare’s plot (which we know isn’t over) just became overly clichéd.  Though I get the point of Clare’s actions, it still doesn’t outweigh the fact that I’ve seen that many times before, and this version doesn’t bring anything new or interesting to the table.  The most interesting part of this storyline is the irony of Eli; he doesn’t want to conform to the dress code, but then we see him do so without complaint as Clare dresses like a hooker to make a statement (that part was extremely random).  And as strong as he believes in being who he is, he still wanted to make a great impression on Clare’s parents, which she tried to ruin with her plan.  Though I’m feeling “blah” about this plot and my final grade of it is a dramatically different that what I thought it would’ve been, I still have confidence that Clare’s breakdown can help this storyline bounce back in the future.

PLOT C: Chantay’s protest against the ban on extracurricular activities gets personal.

Oh snap, it's Chantay....HIDE YO WIFE!! HIDE YO KIDS!! She be climbing in yo windows, puttin sticky notes on your car....

So NOW things get going with this plot….in a plan to protest against the school’s ban on clubs, Chantay takes Anya’s idea to the max;  she completely covers Simpson’s car in sticky notes.  This leads to a discussion between Chantay and Mr. Simpson where they come up with the idea to create a forum for students to discuss questions and solutions on repairing the schools image (and getting the school’s clubs back), instead of continuing with the schools “We’re taking away everything” policy.

It’s unnecessary to recap this plot since it’s such a short one, so  I’m eliminating the “F” I gave it in Part 1.  They’ve done this several times in Season 10 whether the third plot isn’t distributed evenly through the episodes.  So from now on if there’s a third plot that we see all of thirty seconds in Part 1, I’ll just wait until Part 2 to review it.  As for this one, it’s actually not that bad.  The whole sticky note thing was a pretty creative protest.  Now obviously that sort of thing wouldn’t fly in real life (or if Ms. H were still around), but it’s believable in the sense that Mr. Simpson has had a closer connection with the main students than any of the other principals (or teachers) ever had.

  2. I have to disagree on the Claire story line. It did go downhill, but when she had the talk with her parents, that was really great. I’d have given it a B-. Everything else, 100% agree.

    1. Yeah I agree with this. That part when she’s talking to her parents is quite heartbreaking. I also agree with the other grades the Holly J plot is interesting to start up a debate about is it rape or not which is AMAZING how much commotion it stirred up it also showed Degrassi doesn’t need to be overdramatic to make a statement about a topic.

Clare’s change would of worked out better if they had this rebellion-ness brewing(because of the divorce) since the boiling point then FINALLY have her change now.

My grades(since everyone else is making some lol)

HollyJ/Declan – A+ For putting HJ and friends to work and show how Clare and Alli need to act when they get MAJOR plots later in their Degrassi life

Clare – B- For Clare’s out of no where OOC

Chantay – B- For not being irrelevant like last season and Snake caving like we knew he would XD

      1. The reason it stirred up so much dramaon the internet is because the subject was misrepresented in the episode. Not because it was a good plotline. Not even close.

      2. The Dolly J plotline WAS a good plotline, IMO. I think they should have taken more of a stand on the issue, seeing as we’re dealing with rape. But I guess them not taking a stand makes things more interesting and certainly makes it easier to identify with Holly J, seeing as it enables us to understand her confusion.
It may not have taught an obvious lesson, although they did make it clear that by listening to her, Declan could have avoided the whole thing, but a show isn’t obligated to teach a lesson. Although it is obligated to deal with something like rape in a serious, respectful manner.
However it did make the story realistic. While I do think what Declan did was wrong, it was interesting to see that the rapist (although I don’t like using a word that lumps him together with people like Dean either) feels guilty. It was heartbreaking when he realized he had hurt the person he loved.

I agree with the episode review and I thought the last scene with Eli and Clare where he says “you tried to hurt them, but I’m the one that got burned” was really good and tht has to be something tht made me feel very conflicted cuz he says it as if him and Clare should mayb take a break until she gets through her parents divorce, but that changed when in the next promo,Clare says “I wanna spend the nite with you”.

    1. Yea but don’t you think that if Clare is going through a really touch/emotional time that it would be a bad idea for Eli to break up with her or for them to go on a break. I think this would be the time that Clare would need Eli the most. I mean her parents aren’t really there for her, Darcy is gone and so is Ali so she really has no one else.

    1. I’m not a fan of Chantay either. She really annoys me but I thought her plot was pretty good for the most part. She’s really sticking up and taking charge for something that she wants and shes the only one who seems to be that against the new rules. She went from being a nobody character to still a nobody character but at least a leader in something. But she still can be really annoying and I would find it kind of ridiculous if Simpson caves that easily.

  10. I’m absolutely disgusted by this episode, using “rape” as a plot to build suspense, and then dismissing it in the very last moment. It doesn’t matter whether Holly J and Declan are in denial or not, SHE said no, MULTIPLE TIMES, and no means NO. I don’t think Declan is a bad guy, but even without realizing it he clearly pressured her, and she gave in BECAUSE of that pressure – for NO other reason. And “giving in” is “giving up,” NOT “agreeing.” In short, she. WAS. raped. By just tossing this issue to the side like that, just so Declan can sleep easy at night, the show is not only ruining Holly J’s character, it’s sending the wrong message to younger fans. What are they going to think when they see such a strong and independent woman giving into a man, CLEARLY regretting it later, and then telling him it’s not rape? That it’s okay. That it’s THEIR fault. Likewise, others might come across with the message that it’s okay if the other person says no – s/he’ll get into it later, so just keep on going! No. This is WRONG.

I really hope Degrassi is just saving the rest of this issue for later in the season, and not brushing it under the rug. Because even though things are awkward for HJ/D, they haven’t acknowledged the issue. Declan is just left feeling sad because his girlfriend won’t reunite with him. And Holly J is left with all the negative feelings of rape – regret and shame – but not the hope: the knowledge that one was FORCED into it, and didn’t choose it, despite whatever one’s body’s reaction was. Isn’t that almost as though she was…blaming herself? Like she felt bad because she had a boyfriend, and yet was sleeping with another guy? Well, she doesn’t blame the rapist! But she does feel terrible! Who is left to blame? Hmm. HMM. Regardless of what she thinks, I can see that lots of teenage girls on message boards think she was “sending mixed signals,” so THEY certainly blame her!

Fix this, please, writers. You got it right with Paige – the person can be interested, and can even have an involuntary physical response. But if s/he says no, s/he DOESN’T want it. And when one doesn’t want it, it’s rape. ESPECIALLY when it results in all the turmoil HJ was in. :/

    1. i dont agree with you , with the whole rape thing. I dont think that she was saying no because she didnt want to. I do think she wanted to you could tell by how they kissed. She was saying no to the fact that it was wrong because of Sav. And i do understand with haveing it rapped up so early. You know how the show is the story lines are never longer then a episode or two.

      1. But even if she was saying “no” because of Sav, shouldn’t “no” mean NO? The point was that it didn’t feel right, and Holly J’s wishes should have been respected.

    2. Degrassi really did disgust me this episode. So many people (like Kary and even The-Mary!) are brutally misinformed about rape. And they decided that reinforcing all these misconceptions and confusion would make an exciting plotline.

Degrassi likes to pretend to be an edgy show, but this episode proves that it’s not. Having a storyline about a transgender was easy. It’s easy to promote tolerance. But when writing a storyline where the subject has a lot of ambiguity and confusion, and where a definite stance is required, they chicken out. They didn’t provide any information on the subject. Except in Mary’s deleted blogpost, which confirms that both Declan and Holly J were at fault. I can’t believe that a spokesperson for the show would say that.

      1. You’re wrong. No definite stance was required WITHIN the episode. That’s where a PSA at the end is necessary.

        Like

      2. When a show has a clear and decided stance on something, you get “The Secret Life of the American Teenager”.

I think the issue is what is ‘fault’ and what is ‘mistake’. I use the words interchangeably too, so I’m not judging on it. But did Holly J make a mistake? Yes. She should have been more definite on her no. Is she at fault however? That’s a different question. Did Declan make a mistake, is he at fault? Yes and yes. No questions there.

But having the writer obviously on board with something can make the message too heavy handed.

    3. I don’t think she was necessarily opposed to the idea of having sex. She didn’t think it was right for her too – and it wasn’t – due to the fact that she was (kind of) dating Sav. I’m of the opinion, though, that Holly J’s not completely over Declan, and, if there were no consequences to their consummation, she would have no problem with the sex.

  11. To be honest I’m rather surprised at the Declan/Holly J plotline grade. I thought that part 1 was strong, but part 2 was definitely melodramatic. I felt that bringing rape into it felt a bit too much and oddly insulting to real rape victims. Pressured makes sense, but from the scenes I never got the intention that Holly J’s hesitancy was anything more than her saying it but then ‘giving in’ like feeling it’s wrong but wanting it in the end. I don’t think Declan was in any place to be making calls like that anyway, he didn’t force her from what we say, it came off far more as a misunderstanding. So to even use the word rape just seemed well, odd, and muddled, so the whole plot rubbed me the wrong way.

100% agreed on the Clare storyline. Don’t know what happened to her characterization there. I understand acting out but it just felt like overacting after the first half.

I think Clare’s plot is a great concept and Aislinn’s acting is awesome, but they could have spend more time with it, in order to execute it better. Maybe if they would have taken Chantays plot out, it would have added more time to Clare’s plot. To me it felt very rushed, and It didn’t make sense to me that they would make this a B plot, it has the potential to be a great A plot. But instead like Kary said, it felt cliche-ish.

Having said that, I still love the ending scene with Clare and her parents. I believe Love Lockdown was just setting up the foundation for Umbrella, where Clare and Eli finally take the A plot.

  19. The C plots seem to be parsed not based on their own importance, but how to best fit the scenes from the A and B plots into the episode. Since the best cliffhanger spot for Clare was getting home from her date, and the Holly J and Declan spot had only one option for where to end Part 1, they filled the empty spots with Chantay’s plot.

Now, as a way to keep the storyline flowing smoothly on the main plot(s), this is fine. But it does limit what the C plot can do.

I’d hold on putting grades on the Clare plot since it’ll keep rolling into the next two eps (like the K.C. plot did in Boiling Point, and the Sav/Anya plot from the first four eps this season).

  20. I do not agree with the grade that was given for Holly J and Declan. Personally, I found the plot completely bland. Perhaps it was because I never found their relationship appealing in the first place. The whole “rape” and suspense thing was unnecessary.

However, with Clare’s rebellious stage, I found it utterly entertaining. Degrassi did not do as well with her plot. I agree with one of the posters, it was rushed. It lacked a good story development. However, the whole idea is pretty realistic. I have seen many personal friends blame themselves rather than their parents. They end up saying, “I wish I can do something.” Simply, they can’t. However, some teenagers do go towards the length of rebelling thinking that the parents would put aside their quarrels and think about the child.

Although I found the Chantay plot line short and almost insignificant, she played a strong role. She gave an extremely good performance confronting Mr. Simpson in the office by giving good points. Perhaps it does shape Degrassi slowly back to its original form? We will see.

  21. I agree with everything except the Clare grade..u might of thought everything was cliche and rushed but I feel like it was directed and produced well..why? Because it was an escalation from Clare going from bad (setting up Eli) to worse (dressing up) to rock bottom when she had her breakdown…and I mean yes they could have extended her bad streak for another episode, but there is only so much she can do..so i felt that the amount of time they put into Clares situation was about right..Bc honestly..there’s no way Clare coulda kept that up..she was bound to breakdown..you could just tell by her actions…but on another note…I think that it was awesome how Eli realized what was going on with Clare and didn’t fall for her goth/punk charade(spelling?), even tho he was mad from the beginning..but I think it shows that he’s a good guy and he likes the real Clare

  22. I completely agree with you on the markings.

Declan is the best actor on Degrassi and Holly J is the second best. I was waiting for this plot since I saw the ad for part one on the 8th of October. I found it to be great, with the exception of Eclare. (I can’t stand Eclare.) I really enjoyed Declan and Holly J. I thought it was classical Fiona to accidentally misconstrue what Holly J said about feelings pressured. Even though I found it to be amazing, I was disappointed. I kind of wanted some “promise” from Holly to Declan about their future together. As you know, we didn’t really get one. Well sure, we could hold onto her saying that she’ll call when she’s ready, them both going to Yale, and her saying “we need time” instead of “I need time.” I see this plot as being useless unless they plan to use it for the future. The only information we found out is that she’s going to Yale. We could have gotten that in any episode! They could use this though if they are going to have Holly J eventually call Declan, but, if they don’t, that would really suck. I guess they could have her see him and Yale and run up to him and kiss him???

Now to one of the worst Degrassi couples ever (and I’m not talking about Savy J.) I feel that Eli and Clare are the writers favourite couple therefore they have so many episodes devoted to them. I found it strange from the beginning that Clare would be hanging around with a “goth atheist” and a “transgender.” I mean, really, does that sound like Clare to you? I kind of feel like she is always trying to find a different “Clare” in every episode. She got her eyes done, cut her hair, started hanging around with Eli… The writers and trying to make her be able to hold an A Plot while I feel that it is above her level of acting. She cannot even cry. I think Eli is capable of holding an A Plot though. He’s character seems better crafted than Clare’s. I think Eli knows who he is. Though I found the whole thing with Fitz unnecessary I like his character and see potential for him.

I thought Chantey’s plot in part 1 deserved an F. In part 2 I thought it deserved a C. I like the idea of the plot and see potential for it. However, though the idea of the plot is great, I see no real reason for Chantey leading it. Why not have a better character that is currently lacking in the storyline department lead it…Anya. I like that she is apart of it but I think she should lead it. I know she isn’t as strong as Chantey therefore would be less aggressive but I would rather see Anya leading it with Chantey as her vice, but, have Chantey be the one still making all the decisions. So, Anya would be like Chantey’s dummy.

In the season promo I saw that Anya was sitting at a table in a bra. Do you think she is trying to win Sav back? She was never given an episode where it really hit her that her ex-bff and her ex-bf were dating. I mean, I know that her mom had cancer and all but really. I think she needs an episode where it hits her and drives her crazy. Whether she gets it or not is a different story.

On a side note, I have read conflicting things online about whether the Declan character was going to be a main character this season. I finally found out that, sadly, he was just going to be a reoccurring character. Does anyone know when his next appearance will be? I would love to know. Thank you.
P.S, I have heard rumors that Sav dies in the season finale, is that true?

    1. I think that Clare changing is just her growing up, and she’s trying to find out who she is and everything. I mean, I think that’s realistic. She’s friends with the “goth atheist” because he’s a good guy, and he was there to help her with family issues from the beginning as her English partner. And what does it matter that she hangs out with a transgender?

Second of all, I think that it was necessary for Chantay to lead the C plot because she’s the character who really loves Power Squad, and she’s the leader. I don’t think Anya would have put the sticky notes all over Simpson’s car.

Also, don’t you think Anya’s mom having cancer is just maybe a bit more important than her ex going out with her ex-best friend?

    2. Clare USED to be a stereotyping, closeminded person, yes. She used to think masturbation was nasty and that if someone dressed a certain way, that they didn’t belong in her precious “gifted” class. However, we saw both of those issues resolved. She learned her lesson. That was probably one of the only good things about the KC/Clare friendship. KC proved to her, just by being in her gifted class, that just because he dresses a certain way, it doesn’t mean he’s not intelligent. And Clare has always stood up for the underdog. Remember her taking Connor’s side when she went up against The Shep? So, why wouldn’t she support Adam? People can change, especially during high school.

    3. I think you have Clare and Darcy confused. See, Darcy stayed with the hyper judgmental thing. Clare made assumptions about people, which caused some judgmental results, but she was never as bad as Darcy on that matter. She was a bit judgmental on things in S8, and self-judgmental in S9, but both of those are in the past. People grow.

Also, knowing who you are is less interesting a plot than discovering who you are. This is why Dylan was a dull character, Marco was a less dull character, and Riley was even less dull than the above. Which, interestingly, Declan and Holly J are both characters not certain of who they are. Holly J has been growing away from the mean bitch of S7 for three years. Declan was rushed away from being the school player in S9, but that’s still growth.

  26. I agree with some people that the Holly J/Declan plot went a bit downhill in this episode. I disagree, however, with those who are “disgusted” with Degrassi right now. I think Kary makes a valid point: I wouldn’t put Declan on the list with Dean and the guy who raped Darcy.

Also, I think that a lot of people are so stuck on the issue of rape that they’re missing the point of the episode, which is miscommunication in a relationship. Why are so many people are debating about what actually happened? Because we’re suppose to feel like Holly J and Declan did in the episode. A bit confused about what happened, asking each other questions, taking sides, etc.

Holly J shouldn’t have kissed Declan back as soon as she hesitated, and Declan should’ve stopped when she said “we shouldn’t be doing this.” But, when is comes down to it, Holly J knew what she was doing, and while Declan is mostly at fault he isn’t a complete bad guy.

  27. I still love Holly J and Declan together. It’s unfortunate how the writers wrote the story. It seems me like to Holly J’s moved on and felt really bad sleeping with Declan because she had something goin on with Sav. But if she didn’t, I think things would have been different.
Also, I REALLY think we need Landon/Declan in more episodes. The younger actors and subplots are soooo boring. And get Anya back together with Sav, she’s really under-used and it’s sad. Plus, it’s hypocritical of Sav who’s parents won’t let him date Anya, but he feels fine sneaking around with Holly J? I know they’re only supposed to be together until the end of the year, but of course the writers are going to do something about that. Instead, how about getting rid of Sav altogether? And bring Alli back. haha.

    1. Wow, what a wonderfully unbiased opinion of what they should do.

Melinda Shankar is filming another show, so she had to be absent for a portion of the season. Got a problem with that, get her other show canceled.

Sav, Declan, Anya, and Holly J are all (probably) on their last season. So Sav will probably be gone like you want, but not because you have some fantastic hatred for him breaking up Holly J and Declan. Sav/Anya and Declan/Holly J were both floundering for a LONG time as plotlines. Anya needs plots, yes, WITHOUT SAV. She needs to have plotlines where she does things for herself and only herself and lose the crazy need for Sav. Sav and Holly J is a nice change of pace, but both need storylines outside of the romances with anyone. Sav’s car plot (despite plotholes) was great, Holly J’s not had a romanticless plot really, and she needs one.

    1. Eh… this is kind of like Sav and Anya for the first week of The Boiling Point. The two plots have to go back to back. (Technically it’s one plot. We’ve just not reached an endpoint for Clare’s parental issues yet).

We’ll probably get a break after this however, once we’ve resolved Clare’s angst issues. My concern is that it looks like the Dave + Tazer plot is a C plot which makes… no sense at all. I’m hoping Adam and Fiona doesn’t become a one ep (2 ep technically but whatever) plotline and actually gets some build. Adam in a relationship would be interesting for him.

I’m still wondering when we get more Bianca plotlines. She’s a character they can do a fair bit with without making her unforgivably evil.

      1. I disagree about Eclare being like Sanya in the first week of the Boiling Point. Eclare getting 4 episodes in a row is pretty rediculous when it’s the old, weekly format. I wouldn’t mind as much if this were like the Boiling Point because with that, 4 episodes = 1 week. But with this format, 4 episodes = 1 month. That’s waaaaayyy too much. They need to spread plots out more and bring in more characters instead of showing Eclare all the time.

      2. I said Clare got a four ep plotline. The Eli is very secondary to the Clare in this. And given that Clare is dealing with a real issue real people really deal with on a fairly regular basis, it getting four eps isn’t wrong.

They could have switched around and put the second half of Clare’s divorce issues next month (give it a two week break) but they didn’t. I’m not sure if this is by design or just the writers feeling that ‘more storylines need to happen in close proximity.

  36. The other characters grew up and changed but not as soon or as drastic as Clare has. There is no problem with her hanging out with a transgender…it just seems different than how we’ve come to think of her. (Or at least different than I’ve come to think of her.)

That’s what I meant about Chantay and Anya. I meant that Anya should have been Chantay’s dummy. Anya as the puppet and Chantay as the master. Chantay still leading the raid on his car and all but Anya having to take the blame. I think that would have been really good. That way, Anya would be able to get mad at Chantay and it would bring back old feelings of her relationship with HJ.

Of course it is more important! But still, I think that she should have gotten some reaction to it.

I didn’t mean she shouldn’t support Adam, all I meant is that it seems so different than the original Clare. I also meant that the original Clare disappeared at the beginning of season 10 without any previous signs of change to warrant her personality difference.

No, I don’t have them confused. I was talking about Clare’s assumptions, judgments, and self-judgment. Of course people grow! But, in the end of season 9 Clare was different than she was in episode 1 of season 10. Do you see what I’m saying?

FINALLY, SOMEONE THAT LOVES LANDON/DECLAN!!! Everyone hates Declan for Holly J’s mistake in part 1., I’m getting tired of that. She needs to get back with Declan and Declan needs to be in more episodes. I am also so tired of the new people; Eclare is hogging my screen! I really want Sav to just go away. I do like Alli though. I still think Dolly J will get back together in the end.

There is nothing wrong with a biased opinion. Yours is…

I know so many people that were looking forward to the Dave and Wesley tazer gun thing. I think it is kind of sad that it is taking the C plot when a storyline as bad as Clare’s parental issues gets the A plot.

    1. I do think Season 10’s Clare is different than Season 8/9’s Clare, but only because she’s lost a lot of the social awkwardness she had in the past seasons. As far as acceptance goes, Clare was always pretty accepting. She had her moments where she was judgmental, but nothing much more serious than, “why is the jock standing in the gifted class?” That’s not very judgmental at all; I’m sure even the most accepting of us will admit that we’ve had moments that we’ve assumed someone’s intelligence based on their appearance (i.e. assuming a cheerleader isn’t very smart). That doesn’t make it right, of course, but it’s human – and even if we realize it seconds later and feel bad about it, that doesn’t change the fact that for a few moments we were judging that person. It also doesn’t stop us from being pretty accepting the majority of the time. And that’s exactly what happened that time with Clare.

Even the episode where she was so against masturbation was more a result of her social awkwardness than anything else. She wasn’t condemning people who did it, she was just unable to understand why they did – hell, she couldn’t even understand why all the vibrator did was vibrate. And she was, what, 14? 15? I’m sure most 14/15 year olds understand the functions of a vibrator, even if none of them use it. That’s not the sign of one who is judgmental, it’s the sign of one who has been extremely sheltered and just lacks the social knowledge that most of us possess. And I agree; that Clare is basically gone now. But even if she were still around, that Clare wouldn’t have judged a transgender, either. She might have taken a bit longer to understand it, but she would have been warm and accepting to Adam, just as the new Clare was.

Clare has always been one to stand up for those who need help – we’ve seen it with Connor, and even K.C. and Alli to some extent. She’s also not one to judge people easily (assuming K.C. wasn’t smart after knowing him for three seconds was one thing; she was acting on instinct, and regretted it afterwards, which is human. Meanwhile Jenna basically came right out and told Clare she was going to steal her boyfriend. But even after having a lot of time to process this, Clare still trusted her until Jenna started actively going after K.C.). With these two traits, why wouldn’t she have always accepted a transgender? Sometimes I think that people assume, just because Clare is a Christian, that she must be an uptight, judgmental goody-goody. But remember her helping Alli get revenge on Johnny? Remember her trying to stop Alli from seeing him – not because she thought it was wrong for Alli to have sex, but because he didn’t appreciate her? Clare HAS changed, but not in the way people think. She’s never been judgmental, just socially awkward. And people see it as the same thing, somehow.

I can also say that DollyJLover makes a point with the claim that Clare made a big jump in the way she changed from the end of season 9 to the beginning of season 10. I do agree with Sarah when you say that people use Clare’s religion as a way of judging how she should or would act.

    2. Let’s look at Clare’s actions at the end of S9:
      – Start Me Up: Clare feels she’s boring, she decides she needs to work on being less boring. She shows this by buying a lacy bra.
      – Innocent When You Dream: is all about Clare coming to terms with having sexual thoughts. Sort of a long separated sequel to Clare finding the Vibrator. The message being that having those thoughts isn’t wrong and she accepts that message.
      – In Your Eyes: Is about putting the past behind her, with K.C. Mostly the message was for K.C. though.

Start Me Up explains her haircut, she decided to make a change last season, and she followed through. It might as well be applied to the laser surgery too. Judgmental Clare was mostly done away with in Season 8, so I have no idea why that’s being brought up. The only thing she judges is sexual activity, and mostly she didn’t think Johnny was good for Alli. That, the vibrator ep, and Innocent When You Dream cover her stance on sex. She won’t have it but kissing is allowed.

Now when it comes to accepting atheists and transgendered, Clare’s shown more curiosity on these matters then she has straight judgment. So that deals with being friends with Adam and Eli (realize none of her friends in S9 or S8 have shown an abundance of religious values). She probably doesn’t care one way or another about Eli’s values other than for healthy debate… except if she’s using them to leverage discontent from her parents.

Now the interesting point is while what Clare did with the outfit was overboard, Eli called her on it. Not because she choose to dress that way, but because she choose to be someone other than herself. (The Twitters say as much.)

On the subject of Declan and Holly J, both made mistakes. Both made common mistakes. Declan should have STOPPED WHEN SHE SAID NO. Holly J should have been a bit more forceful on her no, but she certainly said no multiple times. Poor Communication is the lesson here, all over this storyline.

I have little doubt down the line the two will reconnect, her plans are still Yale and leading to Declan. Declan needed to realize that wasn’t the day, but he pushed for it. Fiona isn’t clean of blame either, she planned that little event to happen herself. Basically the only person who didn’t make a mistake here was… Sav.

Also, I was looking forward to the Dave tazer plot, but given my half-sisters are dealing with parent divorce. I also know a fair few people messed up by not knowing how to deal with parent divorce, I’m fine with it getting an A plot. Most kids (hopefully) won’t end up dealing with a tazer ever in their life.

    COMMENTS FROM THE DEGRASSI WIKI:

I’m really bothered that people are saying Declan raped Holly J. It’s freaking canon/official that he didn’t! Holly J SAID so. Anyway, I felt this episode was ify-ify. The Clare subplot could have been done better. She seemed a bit OOC but I guess it can be justified since she’s going through a rough time.

Chantay’s subplot was pretty good. Atleast we know there should be clubs(:

    1. he never raped her… declan came up with that conclusion himself, and fiona said thats what she had said. but he never raped holly j …..

    2. I nearly cried at the end. I loved Declan and HJ together. There plot was very well done, while I didn’t like the Clare plot that much. Although, I’m pretty sure they are both going to Yale, so maybe they’ll be reunited again.

    3. The Holly J/Declan plot was amazing. Really. Once I got passed how the writers are trying to F*ck up Declan’s character, it was pretty good. It was one heck of a way to bring Declan back for a while though. I really wish he were in more episodes. The reason I really liked this episode was how much you could see that Declan loved Holly J. He was going to leave and be out of her life because he hated hurting her. Not even just that, I can’t explain it. The final scene with them, had me in tears (anyone else realize Landon Liberon is really good at showing emotion?). I’m gonna stay positive and hope that Declan and Holly J will be together again one day. But at this point, it may take time. :/

  44. Here’s what I don’t get: Why so many people (mainly Declan fangirls) think the writers are trying to ruin his character. Since his very first appearance, he’s been shown to be especially pushy when it comes to getting what he wants. Maybe people forgot because his love for HJ was magically able to transform him so quickly? However, even if that’s the case, he started showing that side of himself again when he began to feel that he was losing her (during the early episodes of the Boiling Point). In “Love Lockdown,” too, he was showing the same traits…Even those who believe he raped HJ (like me) aren’t arguing that he suddenly turned into a “HAVE SEX WITH ME NOW OR I’LL HURT YOU/TIE YOUR HANDS DOWN/HOLD YOU DOWN AND MAKE YOU SLEEP WITH ME!” rapist that is so often mentioned in news reports. No, he was just being his usual pushy self – it’s just that this time, he should have realized it was not the time to push. And because he didn’t, because he was so used to getting his way, he ended up taking things way too far. This wasn’t a destruction of his character; it was just a scenario in which his normal pushy character would fail and he’d get burned for trying so hard.

    1. You’re right. Declan is used to getting what he wants. He had a lot of flaws, as a person and as a character.

For me, not as a fangirl, but as an ordinary fan of his character, it’s not so much that what Declan did was out-of-character that’s bothering me. I think it was just that regardless of what is in or out-of-character for him, the writers didn’t have to turn Declan into a rapist. But they did. They used a much-loved character (whether it be by fangirls or just regular fans of his)to prove a point. And yes, he’s their character so they can do what they want, but fans are allowed to be disappointed. To them, because they like Declan, it is seen as something that damaged his character. Whatever flaws he had, they saw his good moments and liked him for them, and then to suddenly have him accused of rape kind of sucks.

And while you’re not arguing that Declan suddenly turned into a violent rapist, what bothers me, is that some are comparing the Dean/Paige rape to Declan. And I don’t think that that’s a fair comparison. Both situations are rape (or perceived as rape, if you’re of the opinion that it wasn’t for Declan), but that doesn’t mean that they are the same thing. All rape situations are different and should be regarded differently. They can’t just all be lumped together. Declan made a mistake. He took it too far. But he’s not a monster.

YOU are not arguing that, but I have seen people saying that Declan is just as bad as Dean, and while that is their opinion, to me, it’s a bit of an exaggeration.

For me I was less bothered by Declan’s actions than by Holly J’s. She is Holly J Sinclair. It was hard for me to believe that she could let herself get pressured into it. Especially when you recall the episode in season 8 where she was throwing herself at Blue somewhat similar to how Declan was to her.

IDK I don’t think it was “rape”. I feel like that is a very strong word to use. Holly J was pressured and probably felt guilty. But I really think if she had stood up from that couch it would have been different.

I agree with a lot of people that this was bad communication at it’s worst.

I think this is one of those stories that is not all Black and White. No he didn’t rape her but what happened between them wasn’t good.

    1. People are right when they say that Holly J really shouldn’t have to push or shove her way off of Declan for him to understand that “no” means no. But, at the same time, I did think it was rather out of character for Holly J, a strong, ball-busting female to just submit to someone when she didn’t feel like doing something. To me, Holly J seems like the type of gal to sock a bitch when he won’t leave her be, but it just…I don’t know…

I’m not saying she’s at fault. I’m just saying it was rather odd for her, which is probably why a lot of people assumed when she said no, she didn’t mean it.

There’s a fine line between having and not having consent, so I thought it was very interesting for Holly J to feel remorse the next day.

  49. Love Lockdown Part 2 was really stiff and dry. The whole HJ and Declan thing wasn’t that amusing at all. The whole character of declan just creeps me out. I felt like this was one of those filler episodes. If anything Claire should have had the main plot.

Alli’s episode was way better than this one, minus Jenna. We all know Dolly J wont happen cuz a piggy named Jenna comes along and gives HJ some competition

  51. I think you mean “we all know Savvy J won’t happen because of a piggy named Jenna…” If you look at the season promos Jenna kisses Sav, not Declan.

I was thinking of the season promo, the one where Sav asks Holly J what happened at Fiona’s party. (That hasn’t happened yet.) I think Love Lockdown will come back to haunt Holly J. Maybe that is the episode where Jenna kisses Sav. Maybe HJ will call Declan in that episode too.

  53. personally, i kind of found that mini to be sort of epicly hilarious! i mean, it obviously didnt have much substance, and sort of felt more like it should be a promo for a longer mini, but i think thats what they were going for. and it made sense that it was split into parts, but the parts definitely shouldnt be spaced out over days. but all in all, i totally loved it! so funny! “fiona coyne, man eater.” and clare . . . Innocent When You Dream. good times. and the zane/riley thing. i loved how it was basically a cariciture (i know i spelled that wrong) of every storyline they’ve had.

In other news I loved the humor in every mini, especially the Zane and Riley part. it really defined all their storylines (previously) and LOL at Fiona I hope they were referring to her in later stories because she hasn’t done much man “eating” previously.

Clare and eli B+ it was pretty exciting how we got to see eli finally meeting clares parents but other then that not 2 exciting and chantay C- to be honest i dont really have a care in the world for her plot and it was boring as hell but not bad enough for me to give it an F. i was just waiting in suspense for eclare like i do in every part of an episode that bores me lol

      2. Yes, when Eli was a new character and barley in any episodes & when people wanted to know more about him and wanted them to get together. But now that they are together it’s becoming way to much. Even ‘Eclare’ fans are agreeing. I like them but show them once in a while not every 2 seconds in every episode. I mean they are great characters and everything but they aren’t the whole show.

    2. I don’t think we’ve actually had THAT much of them. I mean, they were in the last two episodes, Love Lockdown pt.1&2, and they’re gonna be in the next two, Umbrella. That’s only four so far not counting any from the Boiling Point, and they were only in the B plot in Love Lockdown. This is their first A plot, and it’s not even like their all mushy and romantic-y all the time. Also, it’s pretty normal that Umbrella is coming right after LL because Clare’s parents just announced their divorce in LL pt.2, and Clare’s obviously gonna react right after it. Not to be rude or anything, but I think that ppl already being tired of them mostly comes from everybody talking about them on the blog and other places so much.

      1. But that’s exactly what I’m talking about. Were only four episodes into the season and the whole last two episodes were about them (not including the first two which Clare were in) and so are the next two episodes. You don’t think four in a row is a lot? Especially for the beginning of the season? That would be a whole week of the boiling point. I mean we have yet to see any Dave, Zane, Riley, Owen, Fitz etc and barley any Anya, Drew, KC, Bianca etc. I mean I like there characters a lot but I’m interested in what everyone else is up to also and I hate having to wait 3 weeks and having to watch more of what we already have had. I know I’m confusing but I hope you get what I’m trying to say.

        Like

      2. @Matt Well, when you put it that way, four episodes does sound tiring, but the episodes aren’t completely about them. That’s why there are B and C plots. Yeah, we have four episodes with Clare and Eli in them, but you have to remember that, now, each episode has two parts, which means we see more of some characters and their stories, and maybe less of some other characters. And Clare’s going through a rough time right now, so we’re obviously going to see more of her than Riley and Zane who are together and happy now and probably won’t have any problems soon (except for Riley deciding not to wear a matching Gladiator costume…). And we just had two episodes with Jenna and KC, Chantay was just in these two episodes, Sav was kind of in the last episode, and Holly J and Declan were in the last two as well. Fitz is still facing punishments from Vegas Night, Bianca is suspended (I think) from the pictures and the fight, Alli left, and it just wouldn’t be right if Owen didn’t have his gang of bullies with him. That just leaves Anya and the Tenners, and we’re just at the beginning of this half of the season, so…

See? It’s not that bad! =]

      3. I’m not a Jenna fan so I’m fine with her not being here and I’m sure we will get a lot of her with her pregnancy. But KC was in the episodes for two seconds, yes Bianca may be suspended and whatsoever but most of the show doesn’t exactly take place during school hours. Yea the episodes aren’t completely about them but it’s the same storyline continuing for a month straight. holly j and declan were the a plot this week, they werent the b plot last week, so it felt fresher idk haha(Normally I am all for them continuing with a plot) it just feels like all of a sudden Clare and Eli are the main characters instead of it being a show where everyone is involved. but its only the 4th episode and im sure i’ll like umbrella!

  60. LOL the minis where awesome, they weren’t ment to be taken seriously, they were ment to be chessy and silly,

Also, Clare’s plot in Love Lockdown was setting up for Umbrella, and its not the first time characters have plots extending into other episodes, but because its about an overtalked couple, I guess people mind it more,
for all we know, there won’t be any eclare episodes for awhile after umbrella.
Plus, since Clare’s parents issue was left up in the air in the boiling point, I’m glad they touch on it early on in the second half of the season since dealing with her parents divorce will define Clare’s character through out the rest of the season, depending how she deals with, not to mention the consequence that come from it.

There is certain flow to things, and certain plots that need to be put earlier in the season because they reflect on plots later in the season. I watch Degrassi as a whole, I don’t watch just to see one character, although there are some that I enjoy watching more then others. I like degrassi for what it is, not for what I want it to be.

    1. Really? I thought they were trying to seal the deal with the end of Dolly J with this last episode.

They originally ended their relationship in a way that would give the fans hope, but it’s clear to me that they were trying to crush the Dolly J fans’ hopes and make the end of their relationship official in Love Lockdown. To me, it seems like they’re trying to get the fans used to Savvy J, if they aren’t already. I think this was their way of letting us know that Declan and Holly J won’t be getting back together. Of course, that’s only my opinion.

  62. I too have noticed the big changes in Clare’s character. I first saw it in Breakaway part 2. When she stood up to Jenna in the gym, that was a great scene but it was weird to see Clare acting like that. She had always been somewhat of a stiff character and her voice was borderline monotone.
Even though we didn’t see the real transformation, it was obvious at the end of season 9 that she was growing and on the verge of change. I think her story in Breakaway was sort of a big step for her outgrowing not only KC but her old shell entirely.

I was surprised too by her being so accepting of Adam, but I think it was partially because she was friends with him before she found out. That probably helped her see that he’s a good person even if he is transgendered.

A lot of Clare’s beliefs were instilled by her parents so it makes sense that in losing her respect in her parents would make her question a lot of things.

As for the line we are all waiting for “I don’t know who I am”. Clare is a teenager, of course she hasn’t found out who she really is yet.

I’m excited to see where her character goes.

  63. I disagree, KW. I would agree with you though if they both didn’t get into Yale and if Holly J said “I need time,” instead of “we need time.” I think that because they are both going to Yale they will eventually get back together. Plus, something is going to happen with Jenna and Sav in Halo. Unless Sav can get into Yale I predict the end of Savy J coming soon…
I’m not saying that Dolly J will get togther soon, I’m saying that close to the very end of the season I think something will happen.

Yes, I agree JAYJAY. But, unlike you I am not excited to see Clare.

  64. DESCRIPTIONS FOR the LAST EPISODES Of THE FALL SEASON

    Umbrella Part 2
    Original Airdate: 11/05/2010
Eli’s mysterious, off-limits bedroom is too much for Clare to ignore. But is she really ready to handle what she might find in there?

    Halo Part 1
    Original Airdate: 11/12/2010
Jenna and K.C. are civil, and maybe there’s still something there. But is a more thoughtful, reliable boy interested in her, too?

    Halo Part 2
    Original Airdate: 11/19/2010
A secret party is just what the beleaguered students of Degrassi needed. Some might find love, some might not… and some might go to the hospital.

  65. I agree that the hospital will probably be Jenna. Although I would hope they wouldn’t make the description so obvious and they would surprise us by making someone get really sick at the party, a bad fight or something like that. But since there’s only 4 episodes left till the break and the promos show Jenna in the limo (with Sav, the boy who’s probably ‘interested in her) in pain, it’ most likely herr.

After these episodes Degrassi won’t be back until February :(

  67. Declan? Declan't! October 28, 2010 at 4:32 pm

Fanboys and Fangirls, the writing’s on the wall– Landon just got hired by SPIELBERG for his new series. So unless Declan’s already coming back somehow in Season 10 to overcome all odds and make up with Holly J after everything that just went down, then it’s never gonna happen. That’s the end of Dolly J. Forever.

I mean, we can hold out hope for Landon to make small appearances in Season 11, but there’s a reason Darcy’s in Africa (Beverly Hills) and Mia’s in Paris (is a vampire).

Wonder where they’ll send Declan? Timbuktu? Saskatoon? The Moon?

Clare has grown so much it is amazing but she jumped from sweet inocent nice clare to sneaky rebelious and goth….to me goth was a good plan but they went about it in the wrong way. The outfit, the attitude, just creeeeeepy haha but eli did well enough he is a string character an e way….

Chantay did better…i do not c major plts for her in th future but they have to use her somehow so this plot wasnt nessesary but it filled gaps and brought two older characters in so we wouldnt forget they existed.
