MAIN PLOT: Fiona uses alcohol to deal with her anxiety over her case against Bobby.
The case against Bobby is going to trial, which means Fiona’s got to give her side of the story…of course Fiona would rather pretend like it never happened.  She watches Bobby’s deposition and he basically calls her crazy.  Her therapist prescribes her anxiety medication, but she prefers using alcohol instead.  And she bombs her practice deposition with her lawyer.

To take her mind off things she helps plan Degrassi’s Vegas-themed dance…and she shows up drunk to the pitch meeting for the PTA.  And she shows up to drunk to her deposition, and to her exam as well.

To be honest most of this episode, primarily Part 1, is just boring and redundant.  I felt it was unnecessary to establish over and over and over that Fiona self medicates with alcohol, because I think her major issue (which is she’s still afraid to be perceived as crazy old Fiona) gets lost in the shuffle of shot after shot of her “special bottle.”

The best part is Fiona’s mom revealing that she’s pushing things forward because she feels responsible for what happened, and Fiona saying she made everything up.  Her acting in that one scene is one of her best moments on the show.  And while I’ve been hot and cold about Fiona and Holly J’s friendship all season, I’m definitely hot here as Holly J comes through as an amazingly supportive friend.

A major blow to this episode is the lack of Bobby…after reading this article where actor Ben Lewis said Bobby would be back around this time, I’m disappointed that it was nothing more than him on video.  FAIL.

People are going to go crazy over my grade for this plot…you can point out the slow breakdown, the emotional aspect, etc., but to put Fiona’s breakdown in this episode in the same category as the best emotional breakdowns over abuse/assault this show has ever had (Paige in Season 4, Craig in Season 2, DARCY IN SEASON 7) would be a travesty.

The bottom line is does it move me? Does it grab my attention and keep me interested?  For the most part, no.  To me it’s the most forgettable part of Fiona’s Season 10 storyline, which was great up until this point.

SUBPLOT 1:  Adam feels like the third wheel with Clare and Eli.
Adam wants to hang out with Eli, but Eli has other plans…he’s going to hang out with Clare STUDY!  Hopefully everyone knew this was coming from a mile away (aka since the beginning of Adam/Eli/Clare hanging out) that once Eli and Clare started doing their own thing Adam would be the third wheel.

Adam feels betrayed after Eli lied about studying to spend time with Clare, so he randomly starts hanging out with Fitz.  Eli tries to apologize, but upsets Adam after saying he’s going to hang out with Clare again.  “Don’t be such a girl!” he says, and that obviously offends Adam.  I really loved this scene because Eli instantly knew saying that was wrong.  He truly didn’t mean it and I love how he has always genuinely thought of Adam as a guy.

The same can’t be said for Fitz, who when Adam wants to join his fight club, he recruits Bianca to be Adam’s sparring partner because “no guy’s gonna hit a girl.”  That pisses Adam off, and to show Fitz that he is one of the guys he ends up attacking Fitz in the hallway at school.  And then after Eli apologizes again for hurting Adam, the guys take on Fitz in the parking lot.  Fitz hits Eli, but refuses to hit Adam, who knees Fitz in the nards.

This is a great plot because it shifted midway to become something more than Adam hating being a third wheel; it’s a great non in-your-face transgender storyline, about Adam having to deal with people not taking him seriously.  And the fact that now Adam has Fitz looking for revenge against him and Eli leading into All Falls Down makes for some interesting drama.

SUBPLOT 2: Riley has second thoughts about coming out of the closet.
Riley’s still determined to come out AFTER football season, so he decides to set it up by signing himself and Zane up to be King and King of the dance.  The problem is when he signs up, the list is posted online immediately, meaning he’s accidentally outed himself.  He officially comes out to the football team and his fear of the team losing focus comes true, but with the support of Drew, Riley is able to rally the team together.

SIDE NOTE:  Once again Drew gets points for stepping up in defense of someone, this time his QB rival Riley.  For people wondering why he did that after threatening to out Riley earlier in the season? Drew is the future leader of the football team.  And the ONLY reason that Drew blackmailed Riley is because he thought it would land him the starting QB spot…and to be honest  I don’t think Drew would’ve actually followed through with it.  But I do know he would’ve used literally ANY dirt he could find to blackmail Riley into getting what he wanted at the time.  So to once again squash any beliefs, NO, Drew is not a homophobe.

Riley is so good at the game that a scout from a top university (Eastern) wants to recruit him, but Riley’s afraid he’ll be rejected by teammates/fans there for being gay.  The scout informs him that they’d love to have an openly gay athlete at Eastern, but Riley still has second thoughts.  Him googling information (or lack thereof) about gay athletes, and info about why they’re afraid to come out is a brilliant touch.  Coach Armstrong tells him he’s too talented to let his fear of what people will think of his sexuality get in the way, and Riley’s on his way to becoming a football star at Eastern.

The end of Part 1 when Riley started worrying what Eastern would think about him being out made me roll my eyes and say “No again…”  However, Part 2 made his sexuality storyline feel real for the first time in quite a while.  It was like he’s out at Degrassi, but at the same time worried about his decision to come out, as well as worried what people in the real world would think.  And once again, the simple act of him googling was amazing.

At last, Riley is out!

  1. For the most part I agree with the review, but I would personally give the Fiona plot a B cause part 2 is a step up from part 1. But I respect your opinion and agree with you on part 1 of the Fiona part.

I feel as though every time a plot about EClare is shown, you give it an A. But hey, if I were in your shoes, I’d probably be giving them A’s too. They’re my favorite on the show.

Great job, keep doing what you’re doing :)

  5. I agree with the grades for Fiona & Adam’s plots, but not Riley’s.

They’ve spent the equivalent of 2 & 1/2 seasons focusing solely on Riley’s sexuality/his love life/his anger issues that I’m simply bored with the character. I don’t feel his dilemma [not like I did with Marco, but I understand them not going down the same road]. I just wish they would dealt with this in season 9 and moved on to bigger things for him in season 10.

My grad for this plot: C

And I’d like to address the “Drew is a homphobe” thing. Its a little hard to be a homophobe when your sister is a transgender male. How contradicting would it be if he wholeheartedly supported Adam, yet hated Riley & Zane?

    1. Really? I would have given it a B. I actually liked it better than Marco’s because Marco and Dilan are extreme stereotypes while Rily is so much more human. I didn’t like how they compared him to Harvey Milk, though. It made him seem like a huge, important person, but it’s just college football. But maybe I only feel that way because I finally watched Milk that same day.

      1. What I meant by the Marco comment was that they developed his character a lot quicker than they are Riley’s. By this point Marco had come out, met Dylan, been attacked; with Riley its like the writers are taking baby steps.

I agree about them using Harvey Milk as an example for Riley. It was nice to have a little history thrown in, but not if they’re implying some closet case high school boy with an anger issue is as important as the 1st openly gay elected public official.

***[and for anyone thinking I’m against Riley or homophobic in any way: I’ve been openly gay since I was 13 years old; so I have a wee bit of experience with what he’s going through]***

I agree with the adam grade but that’s it fiona`s plot should have got at least a B part 2 was amazing her acting was 100% believable especially her scene with her imo her plot was worth a b+ or an A. By now riley has bored me to tears they had him do the same thing since season 8 mix it up have some zane/anya interaction anything but the same riley issues. Can’t wait for tonight but im still sad no new degrassi til october :(

  9. My prediction for All Falls Down PT 1+2 stabbing incident:

My guess is that when fitz walks up to eli and clare he stares at them for a few seconds and walks past them seeking revenge on ADAM i believe that adam mite be the one that aactually gets stabbed thats why they are distracting drew by keeping him in the boiler room, but my guess is that when adam gets stabbed she gets stabbed in the arm and owen sees this and goes crazy on fitz so owen and fitz start fighting and in the end owen gets stabbed and killed

    1. Yeah…I usually forget that myself…so most people think that Riley’s story is overdrawn…but if you think about it, it really only took him a year to FINALLY come out…BUT I just wish that they could have Riley interact with more people (OUTSIDE OF HIS SEXUALITY STORYLINES) like in the beginning of season 8 before we even knew who he was!

  12. Yeah, Fiona’s plot was so redundant…The point got across the first or second time, they didn’t need to keep reiterating…

As for Adam and Riley…I thought the part 1s were alright. I’d give them B’s I guess. But both plots majorly stepped it up in part two and it was such a rewarding episode.

I like how Fitz didn’t hurt Adam by just being “oh lawl you’re a girl but pretending to be a boy. You freakkkk” I’m glad they took a different, much more interesting route with that.

Also what’s with all the theories about Bianca going to the locker room with Drew being some sort of crazy setup/scheme.

    Guys, come on.
She just wants to do him. End of story.

    THANK GOD RILEY IS OUT

hopefully in the next half of season 10, they’ll “expand his role” and put him in a new situation that has NOTHING to do with his sexuality (I can’t take another “i’m gay” plot)

i hope All Falls Down doesn’t dissapoint

I am so happy that Riley is out finally though, because they have spent too much time on him on the past episodes. I love do love Riley though. Bring on AFD. I CANNOT WAIT!!!!!!!

  19. I agree with the ratings. Fiona’s plot was very sophomoric, this is Degrassi not some lame after school special. I felt the fact Fiona’s drink of choice is champagne was very stereotypical. Did they pick champagne because Fiona comes from money and they everyone knows there is an endless supply of champagne in the wealthy refrigerator? (Sarcasm) I really hope they come back to Fiona’s self medicating problems because whenever Degrassi touches on addiction issues it seems to be a 1-2 episode problem and it is fixed. Lastly I do feel this season the writers are doing a better job at slowly building us up to larger story lines and better payoff’s.

P.S. Is anyone else annoyed with Ali and Jenna’s friendship? Isn’t Jenna the girl that stole her bestfriends boyfriend?!

Even though I agree mostly with the review, I think Fiona’s acting for me made the episode better…I personally think that if they actually made Fiona go “Darcy” crazy she could pull it off…probably better than Darcy did.(: and I’m soooo glad Riley’s out! …but I personally (me being the drama guru that I am) wish that they would bring in a character to cause some rift between Riley and Zane, for me (personally) that would be pretty entertaining….and I want Adam to spread his “awesomeness” to a girl of his choice(:

  22. I 100% respectfully disagree with your Main Plot review. I loved Fiona’s storyline. Why? Maybe because I don’t compare it to other storylines. It is what it is, not Dracy, nor Paige, and not Craig. It’s FIONAS, and you shouldn’t compare it to other storylines because it’s not trying to be that.

    1. AGREE’D I understand that it may not be in league with that but that’s the whole issue with Degrassi now, People are too busy comparing when they should be treating it as a brand new story with brand new people, especially since pretty much all the original cast is gone there is absolutely no reason to compare the past to now considering Its just Degrassi now not Degrassi the next Generation. Yes it may just be a name change but the name change is trying to tell everyone its a new show let go of the comparisons and treat it as a new experience.

I think the Fiona plot was great B+ even an A. The drinking was very repetitive but don’t we realize she had to play drunk act like a idiot and psychopath and she did a great job of it within realistic reason instead of being over-dramatic like Darcy trying to suicide and getting Snake almost fired or Paige crashing the car into Dean’s(it’s just a lil much for being raped just sayin’ no one acts out that much)

im really excited for the Drew plot, idk why, but I just think it leads to why Ali was put in that Situation she’s in with Owen, and I’ve kinda missed Bianca (Even thought she was in this ep for about 215secs) And im excited for Eli’s Adam’s Fitz Claire plot but isn’t everyone? Although I don’t really think this plot is the cause for the lockdown, I think something happens beforehand, & anyone notice how adam isn’t in the promo pic with Eli & Claire & Save & Holly J? Nor is Ali, & there’s police, maybe there looking for them.
The plot im least excited for is HollyJ& Sav, idk it seems like they don’t really do anything but like kiss and get caught… but idk; So yea, there’s my 2cents .

  31. I totally agree with the grades for this episode. By part 2 I was completely over Fionia and her drinking. Like you said, by the 4th or 5th shot of her & her water bottle, I was over it. I did like how her & Holly J’s friendship evolved in this episode. I always thought it was an “I just tolerate you because you’re my boyfriend’s sister” type friendship and it’s nice to see that they are genuinely friends now, without Declan being in the picture.

I LOVED Eli & Adam. The world could learn a few lessons on acceptance from their friendship. “Don’t be such a girl.” I was shocked that Eli actually said it, but knew that he didn’t mean it that way. It’s great to see that Eli never thought of Adam as anyone other than Adam. I’m excited to see how their friendship progresses over the rest of the season.

RILEY!! I was so proud of him! Even though his plan somewhat backfired, he didn’t retreat back to the closet or try to deny it. I loved that he googled the facts about pro gay athletes & even though the results weren’t great, he looked to adults he trusted to help him out. I think, like Adam, this is a great story line to have people open up & talk about controversial issues.

Can’t wait for these last 2 episodes & hope they live up to the hype!

Also, sex in a graveyard wouldn’t be the worst place to do it. At least it’s original. I always thought the worst place to have sex would be the beach. Cliche AND uncomfortably sandy. Tombstones are morbid and unromantic, but at least there’s plenty of well-manicured lawn around them. A lot less itchy.

      2. @KW: I would agree with you 100%, except I just saw Charlie St Cloud (which sucked – don’t watch it), and the characters DO have sex in a graveyard. It completely destroyed that concept for me forever. :( I guess it’s back to sand up my ass for me.

  47. I can’t help but feel that this isn’t be the last we’ve seen of “crazy” Fiona. I hope that she’ll be revealed to have some sort of personality disorder or something.

Also, LOVED the smooch/handhold between Zane and Riley at the end of the episode!

    1. They need to bring back Fiona’s raging incest.

Sweeping that under the rug and having everyone become buddy-buddy was criminal

Believe it or not I actually agree with this. I was kind of really hoping Degrassi would “go there,” like that one Robert Cormier novel where the kid could become invisible and he saw those two wealthy siblings having sex.

I guess not everyone loves drama as much as I do though.

      2. ^ This. Because god knows the only other person Fiona has HALF as much chemistry with is Holly J (but she’s 100% heterosexual, of course!!). She just needs to get it on already. EVERYONE knows she and Declan want it. :/

  49. I was more dissapointed in these two episodes than I’ve been throughout the whole Boiling Point. They seemed bland – the Teennick promo gave it all away. I wanted Fiona to freak out more (like, Darcy style) and the Adam/Fitz/Eli drama to be more intense (I wasn’t interested/convinced AT ALL- and I’m not that picky). However, I did enjoy that Riley FINALLY came out – all the back and forth has finally ended and they can stop using him as a filler now.

Yes, that was my comment from before. I’ve got to add though, after rethinking about Adam/Eli/Fitz drama, it was a good lead on into All Falls Down, but it could have probably been in one episode and still have been good.

  50. As for tonight’s episode (AFD1), I thought it was a VERY good lead on to the second part, the BOILING POINT. No bad things to say about it.

One point of concern however is that Clare gave Jenna the time of day to be at her house (Their cat-fight in Breakaway). And I find it good that Clare doesn’t know that Jenna is pregnant; but I’m assuming she knew Jenna and KC broke up so she can maybe tolerate her a bit more? Rambling = Clare is a good, accepting, strong character this season by FAR.

  53. Yeah I find it kind of silly that people would think Drew is homophobic even though his own brother is transgendered, Even thought they are completely different, it shows that Drew is someone that can tolerate difference. Anyways about tonights episode which was a GREAT setup for part 2, especially the whole Fitz vs Eli thing which i think is one of the best rivalries in the entire series, it feels so real and is an intense rivalry to watch with an actual buildup. Can’t wait for part 2. Last episode of The Boiling Point!!

    1. Drew treats Adam like his doormat. People only lie and tell themselves that Drew is NOT a homophobe so that they can feel better about liking him over shallow reasons.

  54. Eli slips the Ipecac in Fitz’s drink and when Fitz is with the knife he throws up and gets sick… Clare and Eli make a run for it and the cops find Fitz with the Knife and arrest him.

  55. Eli never genuinely believed Adam to be a boy. When Adam was introduced, he totally rolled his eyes at the comments Adam made about testicular pain, laughed at him when he said “booyah”, and responded with “gross” when Adam mentioned having a girlfriend.

  57. No, you’re wrong about Drew. He basically has no conscious, Adam is his doormat and yes, he is a homophobe. Next to Marco being gay bashed, Drew gay bashing Riley was by far the most homophobic thing that’s ever been done on this show. Besides, it’s not like Riley actually got justice (great message to send out to your LGBT populace) and Drew never actually apologized. All he did was try to make sure that the team’s best player and captain was in top form. The scene proved that yes, Drew really CAN ruin ANYTHING.
