Interview With Degrassi’s Executive Producer, Stephen Stohn

Stephen Stohn is the president of Epitome Pictures Inc., and is the executive producer of one of the most popular teen shows in the world, Degrassi: the Next Generation, now simply known as just Degrassi.
Stohn is married to the other producer of the Degrassi series, Linda Schuyler, who created the series in 1979. Throughout the decades, Degrassi has been praised for its storylines, and the fact that the actors look like actual students you would find at your own school.
The show has just recently started airing its 10th season, and it is the biggest yet. A New York movie which aired on July 19th in the US brought in over 1.2 million viewers for TeenNick, making it the highest broadcasted show in the history of the network.
The 10th season will also mark the 200th episode of Degrassi, which is a rare accomplishment for a television show, especially one from Canada. Most shows dream of being able to just make it to 100 episodes, but to be able to pass 200 episodes is truly remarkable. The 200th episode aired on August 5th.
Along with airing the 200th episode, this season is expanded with a total of 48 episodes, double the standard season length. This will allow for more expansion in the storylines, and the chance to introduce new characters.
I was honored to be able to interview Stohn about the new season, and the future of the show.

Fans are curious if we will ever see Emma and Spinner again. Was the marriage a sendoff for the characters, or will we possibly see a cameo from them sometime in the future?

After two successful Degrassi movies, can we expect a third one to come next summer?
We should do something special like that—but we’ve been wondering if it should be a two-hour again, or maybe a one-hour special could work really well too…still talking about it!

The 48 episode season idea has turned out to be such a success. Will we see seasons like this in the future?
It’s been a real success, so yes you will continue to see it. We may not make it 48 episodes though, we could cut back to 44…it’s such pressure on everyone doing the 48 it could be better for the fans and the series to do very slightly fewer episodes!

One of the most talked about topics this season is the transgender storyline. How did this storyline come about, and why did it take so long to be covered? Was the crew worried about controversy surrounding the subject? What was the process like finding the right actor to portray the role?
One of the key elements in Degrassi story-telling is that major issues always happen to ongoing principal characters… we don’t have someone drop in for a few episodes with some major problem and then leave, they need to be a character who we are all engaged with and know the backstory to, and are interested in finding more about. So it’s not just a question of writing the story, it has to be developed over time, and with the right character and right actor. We were very lucky with Jordan, because she is such a perfect actress and she was thrilled to have the chance to portray Adam.

Fans have been really responding to the music this season. While the music has always been something the fans enjoyed, it seems like this season you guys really took it to a new level. Where do the song ideas come from?
You know how much music is important to me personally, but there are many others on the team who share that passion. With the switch to MuchMusic in Canada it became even more important to introduce great music—and even more challenging to select exactly the right pieces so that the lyrics and the melodies totally underscore the key moments…it’s absolutely my favourite part of the entire production process..

Degrassi has been known for the episode titles named after songs from the 80s. This year, many of the titles are very relevant to current music, and come from artists like Kelly Clarkson, Jay-Z, and Christina Aguilera. What caused this change?
Well, in the tenth Season we were entering a new decade and it seemed appropriate to expand forward the music titles!

The removal of the “freeze frame” at the end of each episode, something Degrassi has been known for over the course of its run, was removed this season. Why did you decide to change it now?
It was Stefan Brogren who suggested it…a lot of shows do it, and when we tested it out it just felt right!

A new cast addition to season 10 is Cory Lee, an actress you have worked with before on the hit show Instant Star. How did it come about for her to join the show?
We’ve kept in touch with Cory, she is one of our favourite people, and when we knew Mr. Simpson was moving on from MI to become the principal we knew we needed a new MI teacher. We were actually having a discussion about music at the time, and someone said why not have a teacher with a musical background…and then we all almost shouted at once—how bout Cory Lee!

It was recently announced that Melinda Shankar will be leaving Degrassi for a period of time to work on another show. Will she be temporarily written out, or will she just be gone for awhile and other cast members will be focused on?
Her work on How to Be Indie will largely be over the hiatus when we are not shooting anyway, and many of the cast members will be over in India…but something major does happen to poor Alli… something intense…

Occasionally Degrassi features pets on the show. We’ve had Ferret Bueller (Ellie’s ferret) and Edgers (Emma’s dog) just to name a few. This season, Fiona gets a pig she names Porcelina. What was it like working with a pig on set?
EVERYONE loved the pig (whose name in real life was Edward). We all wanted to keep him on the show, and I wanted to do a spin-off series just based on him! He was totally adorable.

You’ve recently stated on Twitter that the episode “All Falls Down”, named after a Kanye West song, and which will air as the mid-season finale of the show is “the most incredible episode of all time”. That is quite a thing to say for a show that will have aired over 200 episodes by the time it makes it to air. What makes this episode so good?
Everything reaches the boiling point in the final two episodes, particularly in the final episode. I won’t say anything about the storylines, but there are several plotlines that all intertwine, the music is pounding away relentlessly and there are some absolutely shocking moments that will have fans screaming at their television sets. This is one episode you must see exactly when it is on the air. Cancel everything else in your life to watch it!

There has been a lot of talk recently about a Degrassi spinoff. Is this actually happening? If it does happen, will it feature an entirely new cast, or will we see characters we are already familiar with…maybe playing a new role? Will it even be called Degrassi?
It won’t be called Degrassi. We’re getting closer to talking about it. It may or may not be a spin-off… if it is it will feature one or two Degrassi characters as leads along with some other different cast members entirely…

Great interview! I’m definitely pumped up for the finale. You know, what I’ve liked best about the Boiling Point is that all of the episodes have come together to tell a story. In past seasons, most episodes were more or less stand-alone episodes and you’d forget about them by the end of the season. This time around, however, each character and each plot have been so excitingly and brilliantly intertwined that the build up the final event has been that much better.

Am I the only one who doesn’t think that Alli going to be hurt? The only reason I wonder is because Aislinn Paul posted a video of her and Melinda talking about the last episode of the 24-stretch. The two of them were talking about how they just cried for an entire day, and that was essentially their lines in the last scene.
Since Alli’s leaving for a small while and she has this ridiculous never-ending quest to get popular (I am SO sick of Alli at this moment), I’m beginning to wonder if something goes down and Alli’s involved; since she has a record already…
She goes to juvie?
It may be a stretch, but Sean went to jail, not juvie. They haven’t covered that quite yet and Alli would be an interesting choice. Not to mention, she said something in the earlier seasons about how she could do anything and she would be the good child compared to Sav, now that he wrecked their dad’s car. I mean, her re-entrance to the show could be her estranged from her parents…
I’m not sure. It’s just a wild guess, but I think it could be interesting and provide for some serious depth into Alli’s character instead of, “OMG, BRB GOT 2 GO ATTACK NEAREST CUTE BOY.”

a spinoff is when a tv show is created based off of another tv show. like, you still have some of the same characters, but some new ones, and diffrent storylines. and you might have characters from the old show guest star.

IF they do make a spin-off and they decide not to go with the Degrassi main characters taking the lead, why not make an American version of Degrassi and host it on a basic channel? I bet it would get more hits because it wouldn’t be oon a special package that costs more money, and on at primetime instead of 9 am. It would be cool to see a start of a fresh new cast no one knows. The only downside really is that it might steal thunder from the Canadian Degrassi.

Honestly, I don’t care if they drop the name or not. Personally, I don’t know what else they’d call it, but whatever. I know one thing for sure: If they make a Degrassi series WITHOUT Degrassi, the school itself, I can guarantee that they are going to lose 95% of their fanbase. And in choosing the characters that will remain on the show, they’d better be awfully wise. No matter what, Degrassi is like, the next Sesame Street, so here’s to 30 more years! ok, people stop it with hoping the old characters stay and they continue off into college. remember what happened last time? besides, it’s called DEGRASSI, which means we see what happens in the SCHOOL, not the characters. I know it sucks when your fav character leaves, but there will be new ones to fall in love with.
bottom line, following the characters into college is a bad idea from what we saw last time with Paige/Marco and Ellie, and with Emma/Liberty/Manny. Teenagers are more interesting that adults.

Coincidentally, tonight’s episode actually borrowed from an episode of Saved by the Bell. Specifically, the bachelor auction was done on an episode of Saved by the Bell. Wendy, an overweight student, bid $100 to go on a date with Zack. He didn’t want to date her and feigned an old surfing injury. One of the nerds suggested an excuse about joining the space program might have been more effective…..On a side note, I felt sorry for Wesley because none of the girls wanted to bid on him until Anya finally pledged $2. Can’t wait to see what happens there…

I agree. I loved the Joey/Caitlin stories. Snake is involved but not as much as he was. My favorite story with Snake is the Darcy/Snake accusation. Spike was there, and where is Emma’s half-brother? They should do a spin-off on him, if they ever do one. If they do a spin-off, I don’t want an American Degrassi. It’ll be the same, but with new characters, and maybe more African Americans.

What I’m saying is, Degrassi rarely has any main Black characters as much as they do white characters (besides Dave, Chantay, and the Bhandaris, who have colored skin.). The following them into college thing could work, but they went about it all wrong. There are different problems, like roommate situations and drinking (much different) and of course money, stress like hell, and the fact that a lot of college students grow depressed and see the school counselors all the time. I think the others didn’t go well because there wasn’t much left to do with them, since they had gone through a load of crap. High school teen drama shows are good, and degrassi is great cause they throw real problems in, not just BS like gossip girl and 90210. The old 90210 and degrassi are the best out there, and old 90210 did college for them pretty damn good. I think degrassi could totally do it.

Great episode. I smiled a lot through it, and I’m glad Clare and Eli are back on better terms. Same goes for Riley and Zane. And Riley’s mother! “I just want grand children!” Way to pressure him! I really thought she was gonna say she knew he was gay all along.

Much aired a promo for next week’s finale. Among the clips, we had Riley planting a kiss on Zane in school, Holly J wearing a corset and panties (we got a butt shot!) for Sav, and Fitz pulling a knife out of his locker, and walking with it towards what I’m guessing to be either Eli or Adam in the halls.

Today’s episode was quite enjoyable! I liked the Wesley plot and Riley plot the best.
I think what threw me off about the episode was that I assumed by the end of the episode, Riley would have come out. I guess he’s in the closet at least until next week, where he kisses Zane in public and makes everything official. I can’t wait for that moment.
Riley’s mom is really cute lol. She’s really funny about her Greek stuff. I’m pretty sure this half of the season is to confess to the school that he’s gay, and the second half of season 10 Riley has to confess to his mom. That’s gonna be an interesting storyline.
I really liked the Wesley plot! Something I really liked is that Drew really did try to help Wesley. For some reason, I was kind of scared Drew being cocky and all was gonna “try” to help Wesley but instead he tries to sabotage him. I’m really happy Drew tried to help him. And Wesley makes me really happy! I kind of relate to this plot, trying to be cool for someone else. Wesley is really quirky, yet sweet and that’s why I like him.
I thought the Eli and Clare plot was good, but all I have to say about i was that there was too much focus on Clare trying to get information out of Adam than Clare and Eli actually talking. Or at least that’s how I feel.
Next week is gonna be, pardon my french, f%cking intense.

OMG! I got so mad at Riley’s mom for interupting him saying, “It’s okay if their not Greek” or whatever she said. He was going to tell her and she just HAD to interupt and of course… he never told her. I LOVE LOVE LOVED it when Riley bid on Zane:D That was just a sweet guesture, I guess. It made me a bit frustrated that Zane wouldn’t let Riley, possibly, come out when Drew asked him but I guess Zane was just trying to be nice.
Did anybody else feel bad for Wesley during the auction? Omg… I felt sooo bad for him; I like wanted to start crying. He was so happy though when Anya bid 2 bucks on him:) lol Although, a lot of people would say this plot was pointless, I thought it was cute and maybe Anya with start to like Wesley (doubt it but it was still cute).
I was definitely laughing when Wesley was like trying to be cool talking about his pancakes :D
Clare and Eli… all I can say is finally. I was going to scream if Eli ignored her the whole episode and never got anything resolved but obviously, now we know that there will be a relationship soon enough between them:)

Nothing bad happens to Eli or Clare. The 4 characters that something’s going to “happen” to are Alli, Drew, Owen and Bianca. Here’s why:
1. Fitz is confirmed for the rest of S10, and is trying to “turn his life around”. He doesn’t die, maybe get’s slashed/stabbed? But I don’t think he does.
2. Eli and Clare are also confirmed for the rest of S10, and they are both seen in promo pics, staring at the school along with Sav and Holly J.
3. Stephen Stohn said on both twitter AND this interview that “something is going to happen to poor Alli…something intense”. Also, Melinda (who plays Alli) is leaving for the rest of S10 to work on her other show. Melinda CONFIRMED through twitter that she’s eventually returning. This means, Alli doesn’t die, but something bad enough happens that Alli is gone (hospitalization).
4. The episode descriptions keep emphasizing the importance of “the boiler room”. Also, the entire 24 episodes are called “The Boiling Point”, and in the promo videos and pics, you can see ambulance sirens AND a firetruck. What causes fires? Explosions. What explodes? Boilers.
I’m 90% sure there’s a huge explosion in the school and Alli gets hospitalized.
If anyone is going to “die”, it’s going to be Bianca and/or Owen. Fitz, Clare and Eli all survive.

so the one thing that doesn’t make sense to me is How is the boiler room involved >.< it just cant be about the whole Bianca inviting Drew to the boiler room, there has to be more.
Also I wonder how the Fitz and Eli thing will go down considering I really don't see them killing off Fitz(theres just no reason and makes no sense) and Eli and Clare are obviously in the second half of the season.
FINALLY we are going to get some REAL acting(she is a great actress) out of Melinda Shankar after the quest for popularity dumbing down her character.
Fiona's plot looks good, I love how they are making her the resident crazy character. I can see her doing more crazy stuff in the second half of the season.
Tonight I realized Riley's part in his plot tonight wasn't all that good(too many stop and think for 10 seconds until commercial break or next scene) AGAIN I shall say Zane needs to be a main character he does more than Chantay and Leia put together. It seems finally Riley is going to jump out of the closet.
WHERES THE THREE TENNERS!!!?? They were in just about every plot and next week it seems they are non existant(next week we are really going to need comedy to balance out all the drama lol)
Lastly lets see how the leak situation goes next week. I can see absolutely no leaks since nothing leaked today and the topic for leaks died. Its sorta a good thing b/c I would feel bad for watching the leak of probably one of the best episodes in Degrassi History(well at least of recent time)

my prediction for the clare/eli/fitz scene:
fitz will get mad at clare for refusing to go to the dance with him so he will pull the knife out to threaten her. clare makes a run for it and runs into eli and eli sees the knife fitz is holding. theres a struggle and fitz tries to stab eli or clare and eli ends up stabbing fitz in self defense (or on accident)
if clare witnesses eli trying to protect both him and her then eli will get off scotch free (like when rick was shot it was an accident but no one got in trouble)
just a guess. as for alli and this god damn boiler room, who the fuck knows

One of the last scenes, the police walk in on Holly J and Sav kissing. I’m guessing they get totally demoted and their rep is completely trashed because they’re ignorant in all that is around them. That’s one of the reasons that the school gets so much stricter: students lose all control over the school.

I agree with Lame….(shocking) I was soooo sick of dumbasses tweeting the actual execs…and being so public about LEAKS LEAKS LEAKS!….I was like ugh, and leaks have been going on for far longer than this season…I was watching leaks in season 6-9. and it happens all the time in movies and films, they actually prepare for things like that.

Those were not even ACTIVE leaks like season 10, for season 6-9 they came out barely before the episode was out and half the time after the episode was already out. Leaks won’t get Degrassi cancelled. A shitty Degrassi(the past few seasons) will get Degrassi cancelled. Thus, why Degrassi was kicked to the curb by CTV.
However, Degrassi is all that Teennick has and MuchMusic lucked out that Degrassi has rebounded a bit. Though, they were doing fine without Degrassi.

Man, “All Falls Down” is intense!!!!
I think Owen was trying to get Alli to be like a prostitute or something, but Alli wants to get away from him.
Fitz might be trying to kill Eli, and either he does stab Eli but Eli lives, or he accidently stabs himself while trying to stab Eli (I kinda doubt he’ll stab Clare).
Bianca….wow if she ever gets a real friend (since she goes from one person to the other and Fitz and Owen kinda don’t count), I will feel really sorry for that person. I love her character like some people do, but man she is really being a slut. I think she and Alli get into a catfight from what Stephen Stohn or whoever said on twitter.
I applaud Adam for punching Fitz, but he shouldn’t fall for what Fitz says to him. And I think after Adam feeling like the third wheel he might end up being friends with Fiona, which would make a lot of sense from the pic of them together (btw, can someone tell Mr. Stohn about that pic…it could help)
And EClare….I don’t think it’s gonna last, as a thought. I think they go together, happy, but then they get complicated and they break up, like all relationships in Degrassi. After that, I think KC might try to go back to Clare, but I doubt it cuz she’ll find out about Jenna being pregnant with his child, and Eli…he’ll be with another chick, but will do the same thing with Clare and act distant with the chick. In the end, Eli and the new chick will break up and Clare will be a cool, independent girl who isn’t desperate to have a guy, and Alli will be mature….yea…I’ve given this a lot of thought…

Once again, Degrassi never ceases to leave me in a state of shock and amazement. I am seriously so incredibly beyond super stoked for the summer finale! I want it to be next week! lol:)
On a side note…am I the only weirdo who screamed like a nut at the television set tonight?lol. It’s like when you watch a football game and you tell them what to do… psh. please, degrassi deserves more screaming…so intense! lol but go Riley for sticking up for your man! it’s about time!

I loved his show since day one since emma met that creepo-deepo and mr. simpson had to save the day, before jimmy was “Drake”, before J.T was stabbed, i love degrassi and i always will proud fan est.02! ;D

I think maybe Fitz is gonna accidentally stab Claire. He’s gonna try to turn his life around in the second half of the season, and if he stabs her, that would make him decide to do it since he apparently has a crush on her.
I just can’t see him making the decision to turn his life around if he stabs Eli since they have beef between each other and he probably wants to hurt him, and if he stabs himself he may want to change his life around but not as much if he stabs Claire. Of course, I don’t think he’s gonna kill her, just slightly cut her.

I’m just going to say this regarding the leaks. It’s not a big deal. There are people who actually have lives. People who work or go to school and don’t get home until late and are not able to watch the episodes at all. Music, Movies, and TV shows leak all the time. Instead of snitching to the execs and so forth. That’s petty. I like the leaks because I don’t get home until 10PM I have school and work so I am not able to watch the episodes. Because I am gone by 7AM Pacific time. So I watch the leaks so I can be caught up with the show. But now I won’t be able to watch them because of petty ass people running their mouths.

If you watch the preview for next week carefully, you’ll notice that it’s actually the fashion police that show up to the dance. One of the characters reached their boiling point when it came to fashion at Degrassi, and decided to do something about it. Fashion felonies abound – Everything from Eli’s acid washed jeans to Sav’s purple T-shirts to Clare’s denim duds….

Alli is going to be raped by Owen in the school.

I think he is going to get in trouble for the dance and be tired of being the nice guy. Mr. Raditch was a nice teacher on the old show.
And it seems obvious that Sav and Holly J are too busy making out or having sex to notice what’s going on. They could get in trouble for not only having sex in school but for not doing their duties at the dance.
IDK I have a feeling there will be a few different things going on at the dance to cause it to go into lockdown.

What I don’t understand is how people are missing the obvious. There was a picture of the AFD with Eli, Clare, Sav, & Holly J. standing outside of the school all surprised/shocked/scared type of look.
So it couldn’t be any of them in real danger due to the lock-down. And Stephan mentioned poor Alli. So something must have happened to her for the “boiling point” , something long enough to take a “break” from school, hence her filming for her other show.
Someone also mention that Clare and Alli have an emotional scene together posted on an interview. And i’m guessing Clare was witnessing the “Scene” because in a preview she looked terrified.
The whole Fitz/Eli fight, Bianca/Drew affair, Alli/Owen situation, will “all come together” when Stephan said the stories are all linked to one another. Like, if this didn’t happen, the that wouldn’t happen, and this and that led to Alli getting hurt.
