[WARNING: THIS EPISODE REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS]
So for this first week of Degrassi: The Boiling Point I’ve decided to try out something different….video reviews. I’m just testing them out to see if they work, figuring out a review format, finding out how much work it’ll take to turn them around quickly, etc. So I warn you…this is a work in progress, lol.
MAIN PLOT: Fiona Discovers that her boyfriend is abusive.
Holly J leaves for Toronto, but Declan and Fiona stay in Manhattan. Fiona’s in a good place now because
1) she’s back from therapy and doing ok and
2) she’s got a new boyfriend named Bobby.
The downside is Bobby isn’t as great as he seems…he’s controlling and hits Fiona after she tries to fend off his unwanted sexual advances. This episode moves at a slower pace (which is expected, since the show now has time to flesh out storylines), but it’s a solid setup for Part 2.

SUBPLOT 1: Holly J returns to Degrassi; Sav runs for President.
Holly J returns to Degrassi to find that her senior year isn’t going to be as simple as she thought. She learns that her parents lost their savings (and her college fund). Her plans plans of going to Yale with Declan are now ruined. Things get worse at school when Sav informs her that he’s running for student body president.
Holly J goes into attack mode, and enlists the help of Anya: they plot to have Anya fake a pregnancy, so that Sav will drop out of the race. The plot ends in brilliant cliffhanger fashion as Holly J drops the bomb on Sav about Anya’s “pregnancy.”

SUBPLOT 2: Dave tries (and fails) to get Alli to like him.
Dave wants to be Class 10 Rep, but his ultimate goal this year is to make Alli his girlfriend. His plan (with the help of Connor) was to create a Girls of Degrassi page, where he ranks girls at the school based on hotness. Alli would be ranked #1, she’d love it and want to be with him.
But a glitch leaves Alli ranked number 42 on the list…leaving her pissed off, and Dave’s slim hopes slip even further. Dave and Alli are two extremely likable characters in my book, but this subplot is uninteresting and unengaging.

Video reviews? What a cool idea. I agree about the Dave/Alli plot looking like a filler plot, except Alli being obsessed with her looks didn’t surprise me. For some reason, I can expect that from her.

Kary, i thought the same thing as you. I didn’t think this epsiode was that good as people were saying it was. It was still good, but not that great. Also i watched this friday with the linked episodes. Breakaway is so much better than this. :)

Love the video review. I agree about the Main and 1st Subplot, but I think the Dave plot deserves a C+. I thought the Connor and Wesley rapping was funny and Dave telling Alli that he wants her was cute. Plus I think it’s setting up for what’s going to happen later in the season when Alli starts dating Drew and Dave becomes jealous.

I think the video review is a perfect idea for the weekly format. Also, being one of the people who have already seen this week’s episodes, I think that What A Girl Wants Part 2 definitely makes the Dave/Alli plot at least come up to a C+ maybe even a B-. But, maybe I am too nice, I love that scene where he basically says he wants her.
Also, Kary, I wonder what your thoughts will be about the use of music in the scenes? I think it will be even more obvious in tomorrow’s episode.

i have seen all the episodes for this week on teen nick when they were leaked on online. i liked Breakaway better than What a Girl Wants. i thought the jenna’a rummor about clare was hilarious. the episodes progress slower but this season he have 48 episodes so i expected for them to move a little slower. overalli good start to season 10!

I AGREE IF U DONT give that Clare and Jenna plot a A imma be mad lmfao.BUT seriously the acting is much better on Clare’s side and it shows that subplots can be funny but have a meaningful point, Rumours get started on the most stupidest things and when it gets back to you, your like WTF I never did/said that.

I tot agree, I love that plot with Jenna and Clare. I LOVE Clare, her new look makes her soooo much more prettier and her character has more range this season, she is not miss, “Clare Bear” she is edgy Clare, but with the same good intentions. Jenna, I REALLY hope she gets what she deserves, I dont like her. Ever since she took K.C. from Clare, she was done in my book. But I hope Clare and Alli stay BFF’s seems like they may go into there own directions, with Alli and her usual drama-personally I think she should go out with Dave, at least he will treat her right. And Clare and Elli are tre-cute! Them two together also shows how Clare has evolved (her acting has also gotten stronger). I think they will be a really cute couple, but I hope they dont alienate ppl. Also from the credits looks like K.C. bad again, and Bianca seems to have something to do with it!

@Mercdegrassi I agree…If Dave got with Alli, he would be that good guy she’s always deserved but is too stupid to realize it, I’ve always like Dave ever since he put Alli in her place in “Why can’t this be love”. and I LOVEEEEEEE CLARE this season, she seems like they’ll go deeper possibly with her character to see what is really going on in her head, so I absolutely love this season so far! (but I think Fiona’s plot was one of the best because it was well-acted so I think it deserves an A- at least)

I watched all the episodes for the wk and I must say that I liked the first episode, I think usually the first episodes for degrassi arent as strong as the rest but it sets you up a bit. Alli I really like her character, and I really like Dave too. I think that he is really smoothe, but never seems to get the girls, I dont really understand it. And Holly J, I like season 9 and 10 HJ…personally I would like to see her as prez, but I dont wanna spoil anything for the future episodes. But overall I would say that this was a good set up for Alli, Dave, Holly J and Fiona, which I think is soooo pretty and has great style, I dont know why she always get the short end of the stick she is a great character, they need to let her take charge, and have ppl in her shadow–but just a little insider, we WILL see Fiona, more confident in a positive way and embrace what she has to offer…and btw Kary LOVE your blog, totally check it like soo many times a day on my phone lol…and I love the episode reviews :)

Video reviews are a good idea, but I think you should also post a transcript of the video so if were in a hurry, or don’t want to stream the video, we can read instead.
Also, the first four episodes are leaked and posted on youtube, you should watch them, and then review!!! The way they are carrying plots over into the next episodes is amazing!!!

Wow. You sound totally different here than you do on the radio! (I swear I’m not stalking you. Just a fan of both Degrassi and M&R. When I first found this blog I didn’t even realize whose it was.) I agree that the Alli and Dave subplot was ridiculous and a waste of time. I get that it’s kind of a rehash of the Paige/JT plotline from the days of yore (except that Dave has a way better shot than JT ever did), but it just seems kind of stale. I liked the Fiona plotline in this episode but thought that the subsequent three handled it poorly. A lot of wasted potential. Declan’s reaction in particular felt out-of-character, given what we know about him and how protective he is of his sister.

This took me forever to find, but I finally did with a little research. First I watched the episode on Utube. I then paused it at the end of the show to see the song names. I saw a song by the name “Hand to Hold” and in that song at the end where Fiona is covering up her bruise the songs says …..a hand to hold. So, I took a guess that was the song we are trying to figure out, I wrote it down, googled it and found it! Apparently it was written by and courtesy of Shawna Beesley. The artist singing it is named Adaline. It took me to her Myspace account and there I listened to the song and confirmed that it was indeed the same song. You can go to http://www.adalinemusic.com to listen. The song name is “Hand to Hold” On her website it shows that you can buy her cd. I listened to some other songs and was immediately hooked! Hope that helps.

I’m really tired of them adding new characters who are juniors/seniors. It’s very important(Especially since the show seems to be going back to the 1 season= 1 year format) that they add new people who are 9th and 10th graders, that way they can stay on the show much longer.
Characters are here and gone just a little to quick these days. Can anyone tell me what are the grades of the new characters?
I know Eli is most likely a 10th grader. But what about everyone else? Drew better not be a senior or I’m going to be really pissed.

Yeah I don’t understand it either. I was really disappointed that we only got the Coyne twins for two seasons most likely.
I’m guessing Fitz, Drew, Bianca, and Eli are juniors. And Adam is a sophomore.
It would make sense to make Zane a Junior, it could even be a way to keep Riley around for season 11.
But I guess we’ll see.

That doesn’t necessarily mean she won’t be in season 11. Spinner graduated and he stayed around for like one or two more seasons afterwords. Marco graduated before him and he came back to be a teacher. lol btw… what ever happened to teacher Marco?

Just saw the first episode and I liked it!
It was so sad to see Declan and Holly J! They are ‘the couple’ for me right now, I love those two! And especially when she found out about the savings and stuff.. it was so sad :(
I hope she still can go to Yale or something! She deserves it, I like Holly J as a char, but yeah.. season 10 is one year, so that means she’ll be gone next year? I agree with DegrassiDrama.. All the time new people and stuff, just when you get use to them they go to college or something, but we will see what next year will bring us!
I still hope Holly J will win the presidentship, but I like Sav, and I think that Sav and Anya won’t be together anymore.. If he finds out that Holly J lied and Anya didn’t say anything about it? But yeah, they were cute, but I don’t mind if they move on!
And I liked subplot B. It was not great or something, but I think it was a set-up for the rest of the season. I’d like to see them together, they’ll be cute I think.
And the last thing I have to say: I liked the videoblog ^^ It’s a good idea :)

Hey, I kind of agree with you. I like reading your reviews by the way…I won’t be able to watch the show until very late tonight and so I enjoy watching this. But I kind of have to agree with you about Alli. She is becoming so self-centered it’s pitiful. I’m hoping she gets back with Johnny at some point. They probably won’t show him on the show unless they get back together. When Claire lent Alli those clothes of Darcy’s that’s when her true pig-headedness came out…when she was jealous and putting Claire down…that’s when I noticed. But I’m kind of thinking Alli will be similar to Paige. Kind of self-centered and worried about looking good and being popular. But there is one big difference between Paige and Alli. Paige actually cares about her friends all the time, not just when she needs them. And she’s not a slut. haha…not saying Alli is…but I think she’s going to become one the way she acts.

So can anybody comment me back on this? Since I live in the U.S. I’m gonna get to see this episode for the first time tonight. But I was wondering, since Holly J. is leaving NY for Toronto, is anything told about what Jane is going to do next? Like where is she headed, college or something? Is that even mentioned in this first episode of season 10? That would only make sense to me since along with Holly J. and Declan, she was spending the rest of the summer in NY too. I hope Bianca is much more of a “badass” than Alex was. And I hope that “catfight” Stefan mentioned involves her. It will probably involve the former “niner” girls. I sense Jenna/Bianca? It was said that Jenna and Alli are gonna spend a lot of time together and become BFFs, so I don’t see a fight in their future. I saw picture of the Power Squad. It looks like all of them (Jenna, Chantay, Anya) are cheering together. And it looks like Alli tries out and doesn’t make it. Aw boo. Could it be because of Jenna? Alli then forms a dance troupe. This will be seen in the second week of s10. I’m so excited! I love the new sophomores and juniors. Enough of the seniors. They’ve had their fair share of drama. But when the seniors graduate, who is gonna take the position of queen bee? If they introduce a queen bee in s11, they will either be in grade 11 or 12. They’ll be on for one or two seasons. I completely agree with you on this review Kary. Fiona’s storyline was pretty good and I was really glad that she is now stable again due to a therapist and not just…time…which would be a lame way to get her back to normal. (Just a little detail I was glad they put in there). Anyways, the Fiona abuse storyline was really well done I thought with pretty good acting on both their parts. Holly J.’s storyline worried me at first because it looks like she is slipping back to her bitch days but I like it this time because she has a reason to be a bitch…she needs to be with Declan…so in a strange way its almost sweet how she…completely messes with other peoples lives. You know what I mean. And I also agree with the Dave storyline being uninteresting. It does seem like filler but idk, maybe we’ll be pleasantly surprised and see some sort of meaningful follow-up plot. Either way, great review Kary and I actually really like the video reviews so keep up the good work.

For anyone who has seen Season 10, are the cameras different? Is this Season more dark like Season 7?

The cameras are def. different, but not dark like Season 7. As a matter of fact, they’re lighter. In some of the scenes it looks like there’s a softbox (aka a thing that helps control lighting) right off camera, and that makes the characters look “shinier” if that makes sense…you’ll know what I mean when you see it.

I noticed that too. It seems like in the editing room they’ve contrasted and saturated the colors as well to make lighter colors even lighter, darker colors even darker, and the colors in between richer. Or that’s at least what it looks like to me.

Okay so I’ve watched the first 4 eps. And I really like them. I like that each plot is drawn out over a couple of eps and the storylines so far are great. But what pisses me off is how the sets are different…. by ALOT. I understand the Dot looking different because of the fire an all. But what’s up with the computer lab? it’s now connected with the library (and whats up with the bouncy balls? WTF?!) and then the cafeteria. Seriously it looks stupid with those weird step things in the corner (which to me looks like a jungle gym or something little kids would play on) and the decorations on the walls are stupid too. With these changes it just doesn’t feel like the same Degrassi. I mean I know it’s changing and the change is good but seriously the stuff they did to the cafeteria bothers me. ALOT. lol

Wow. I am impressed. Season 10, you are off to a great start! If this first episode has anything on the rest, I have a good feeling about this season.
1) Fiona. Poor Fiona. She seemed so happy and…giddy? about her relationship at first. I thought this storyline was done really well, and I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen.
2) Election. Sav vs. Holly J. Wonder how this will go. I guess Holly J would be better, but President Sav is sort of adorkable… And the pregnancy trick! I wonder what will happen. If Sav finds out its a lie, will he blame Anya again? What if he thinks she was going along with the plan? How long can she end up going along with it?
3) I kind of like Alli. I like watching her and Clare together. And I like Dave! I can’t decide if I like then TOGETHER yet. I’ll have to see.

Haha, what an ingenious way to twist the upcoming Drew/Riley plot if Drew was gay himself and still battling his feelings and then taking them out on Riley to get what he wants. I doubt it’ll happen, though. They seem to be making him a ladies’ man, unfortunately.

This episode left me open 0.o because it felt like there should have been more even though there’s a second part. It just didn’t measure up to what a premiere episode should have been
Oh and is it just me or did it feel like Drew liked Sav? I’m pretty sure that’s just me being hopeful… If I had it my way almost all the guys at Degrassi would be gay or bi! Yeah… I’m a sad person X3 But it kinda annoyed me how Drew tagged on to the first person he could but we learned nothing about him

Oh my gosh I can not even begin to explain how much I want to finally be one the same schedule as Much Music next week, because I might sound like a loser, but I just have to visit this site daily and it really doesn’t work that well when I have to close my eyes to not see the review from episodes I have’t watch lol. I just have to get my daily dose, plus only this week and I won’t have to close my eyes anymore.

About the Drew thing…I kinda DON’T want him to be gay. I mean, we just finished a “closeted gay jock” and as much as I like Riley and that storyline, we really don’t need it repeated with Drew.

I agree, Drew being gay would be redundant. I just like the idea of Drew wanting to be the top athlete, finding out about Riley/Zane and using it to blackmail Riley who still doesn’t want the entire school to know he’s gay.

First epsiode was pretty good but it wasn’t as good as I anticipated.
1. I didn’t like the whole three plot thing. I mean… I get they are trying to fit more story in but the whole Dave storyline was so not needed and it made the episode seem shorter. One of the things I have always loved about Degrassi was that they could make a 22 minute episode seem like it was an hour long but now it seems so fast. IMO anyway.
2. I hate that they don’t use the freezeframe at the end anymore. That used to be one of my favorite parts of the whole show just because it made the ending looking even a bit more dramatic or happy or whatever the emotion was at the end. I think it would’ve looked ten times better if they froze the picture while Fiona had makeup on her face and was staring at herself in the mirror than showing her put it on and then skipping to black screen but whatever. lol
3. I see Holly J. is back to normal Holly J. which is a good thing because she wasn’t that great of a character last season with her being all nice and everything.
Overall it was a good episode and I can’t wait for tonights:)

I also have to say that watching this episode made me really sad because no matter how good the episode was… I just keep thinking that every original cast member is gone (besides Snake.. but still) and thats really sad. I got so attached to the old characters and I know people were saying that Spinner only had little parts in the last season anyway along with Emma, Manny, Liberty, and Jay but I looked forward to those parts during the show:/
I hope someone like Peter or Sav at least mentions something about Spinner and like how his marriage is going or Snake says something about Emma. I mean Spinners loft is only, what, a block or two away from the school? lol so they still live in that area as far as we know and I think it would be stupid for them to just act like they never existed especially because Spinner basically lived at The Dot. haha
Anyway… I hope they make at least ONE guest appearance even though I’m pretty sure they won’t. The show won’t ever be the same… but I guess were off to a good start with episode 1:)
