With Degrassi having been on hiatus for several months, the hype behind this episode was pretty big. That was on top of the original hype, based from some of Stefan Brogren’s tweets last summer:

If there’s one word to describe Broken Promises (originally titled Why Can’t This Be Love), it’s anticlimactic.
The first thirty minutes of this episode is nothing more than a setup for Part 2. I hate when they do that (they did it in Jane Says)…why allocate an entire 30-minute episode to a part of the story where nothing of interest happens? If it’s aired as an hour-long special you might not notice it, but I watched it as two separate parts…it’s more noticable that way.
The spring formal is coming up and of course Sav and Anya have plans to go together. The only thing is Sav’s parent’s don’t know he and Anya got back together after their last breakup. And family friends of the Bhandari’s are coming into town to stay with them.
They bring along Farrah, who both sets of parents want her to be Sav’s future wife. They also want Sav to take Farrah to prom as his date. Sav convinces Peter to pose as her date so that Sav can still go with Anya.
Part 2 has a faster tempo, throwing us in the midst of the prom. Through the entire episode Anya had hinted that she and Sav would be having sex on prom night. She’s even more determined when confronted by Farrah in the bathroom. In the blink of an eye, Farrah turns from the nice girl into a “Sav will eventually be mine” bitch, which made no sense considering there was no hints from Farrah that she was even genuinely interested in Sav to begin with.
Yes, Sav and Anya have sex. The kicker is that they didn’t have a condom, and Anya lied about being on birth control. She lied because she was scared of losing Sav at the time, and thought having sex with him would keep him around. Taking that angle about sex might’ve been the best thing to come from this episode, seeing as how they’ve touched on the whole sex thing so many times. Anya takes the morning after pill, but Sav breaks up with her because he can no longer trust her.
Now the acting in Broken Promises isn’t bad, but it’s nothing memorable either. One thing you will do is feel bad for Anya seeing as how the entire episode she feels like she’s being slowly pushed out of Sav’s life. Apparently this episode was supposed to make us cry? No tears here. I will give Samantha Munro credit, she can cry really well, but her crying scene at the end of this episode is nowhere near as amazing as when she cried in the Season 7 episode “Ladies Night.”
I wanted to love this episode and I was so stoked for it, so it’s disappointing that it was so incredibly mediocre (in a Season that’s been pretty great so far).

BROKEN PROMISES SUBPLOT A
I’m not going to spend much time on these because they weren’t very good at all. In Part 1, Johnny and Bruce grow apart. It’s a lame attempt at trying to show that Johnny’s maturing and going off to college next year, while Bruce will still be left behind. Bruce gets angry because he thinks Johnny is getting “full of himself” because he’s going to college, they fight, then they make up, completely voiding all of the muddled drama between them. Oh yeah, and Johnny’s got a new haircut.
SUBPLOT A FINAL GRADE: D

BROKEN PROMISES SUBPLOT B
I really like Alli and Dave, but this plot was dumb. They’re recruited to serve drinks at the prom, which Alli thinks she’s too cool do. They’re also both part of a jump roping club, which she considers lame too. Dave puts her in her place because she’s way too worried about “being cool.” Unfortunately it’s one of those plots where even if it’s two likable characters, there’s an odd chemistry between them. That, and the plot seems extraordinarily out of place compared to the main plot.

That would be a nice twist. (I’m still hoping D:TNG will cover a miscarriage before it gets canceled. And since we all know how good Sam is at crying this seems like a reasonable possibility)

I wish they did. I would love it if Anya turned out pregnant. But I just don’t think it’s going to happen since she took the pill. How sad. :(

She could still get pregnant cause the after pill isn’t 100% accurate. Also some of the side effects of the pill are head/ear aches and neck pain, so thats why she has her hand behind her neck and covering her ear when she is crying(I know it makes the crying look awkward but crying would make your body hurt even more than it already does).

1. I think the main storyline, which was mediocre to begin with, was seriously damaged by spoilers. I went in knowing the whole plot, and I spent almost the whole time wondering about the Clare/Declan preview.
2. There were actually some genuinely funny moments in there. They far outshone the actual plot.

Also, I think one of the main problems with the conflict is that only a few minutes were devoted to it. For most of the time, we only saw the conlfictabout getting to prom. The whole potential pregnancy felt like an afterthought.

Yeah it did. The ending of Part 1 should’ve been either when Farrah and Anya had the confrontation in the bathroom, or end right as Sav and Anya were having sex. Then Part 2 could’ve been more devoted to the potential pregnancy.

yeah, this is the one episode of season 9 that i’ve REALLY been anticipating since september (Sanya is quite possibly my favorite couple ever) and i was expecting it to be amazing. and then i was watching it, and i was kinda thinking “wow, this is what i’ve been waiting for?” also, it would be really ironic if anya were to get pregnant, considering she was best friends with mia.
afterthought: i kept laughing at the theme of the prom: Paris. i just kept waiting for peter to mention it. i felt like it was kind of a slap in the face to him, what with the whole mia thing.

i had a fit when i couldnt find a scene, then me and kayla are like wtf?? the 10 days. i hated it. i was getting so excited.
we had a DEGRASSI SLUMBER PARTY!!! and the ep was crappy.
well the 911 ep promo was okish.
the thing that made me go bonkers was the 10 day thing.
made me realize how long a day is.( ive been up since wednesday.)
oh well i say b+ part 1 was a set up. like you couldve of watched p2 and know what happened.

Yes, I completely agree with your review. The first half hour was taken too slow, and then they speed it up too quickly with the ending. I understand that they’re trying to do something new, and not repeat the Craig/Manny pregnancy, but it backfired on them; badly. The acting was great (and Peter was still his old funny self), but the timing made it horrible. I was anticipating something BIG because I have been waiting since NOVEMBER for new episodes, but this was pretty dissapointing. The whole time I kept anticipating for some “It’s about to get real” moment, and it never came. Very good review, completely agree.

I thought the Johnny/Bruce plot was okay, and I like that Bruce actually had some airtime, but it seemed to take a total 180 with Johnny asking a girl out to their friendship. However, they’re still funny.
And the Alli and Dave plot was cute, it reminded me completely of JT/Manny, but it was random and their chemistry was weird. Plus, a jump rope club? A little random. The whole time I saw the two of them I kept wanting to have Johnny try and win Alli back, not just give up after two minutes. They’ve really made Johnny a better character, and this lowered his credibility.

anyone think there’s still some miniscule chance of Sanya getting back together? i think it could go two ways: they’ve gotten back together plenty of times in the past, and this breakup wasnt at all explosive. on the other hand, the writers may not want to have them go thru getting back together AGAIN.

Nope, Heart Like Mine comes before Broken Promises in the production order. It might be obvious that it’s a continuity error, but they have so little screentime in that episode that people might not notice it.

im kind of praying (in a non-religious way, of course) that anya does turn out to be pregnant, despite everything. there hasnt been a pregnancy since liberty, and it would be a great way to create some drama (and hopefully GET SANYA BACK TOGETHER)

I believe in two rules when it comes to Degrassi: 1) There’s ALWAYS a chance that a couple will breakup, and 2) There’s ALWAYS a chance that the same couple will get back together.

I liked the episode a lot, but I agree that they should have spent more time on the possible pregnancy(maybe when they planned this episode they also came up with ideas for a future episode, which could be in Season 10). Also I disagree with Kary about there being no hints that Farrah was bad and wanted Sav. First off when she is helping Sav after dinner you can tell that she wants to kiss him. Secondly, she was overly nice which screams “BITCH”.

Admittedlt, I already knew from he perviews, but I also thougt there was some basis for her obnoxiousness. What I didn’t like was that towards the end she stopped pretending to be nice.

im genuinely surprised that all the rumors about an anya-pregnancy were essentially true. the pregnancy was my first thought after that “we might have a problem” clip back in the promo in december. but i figured it would never happen, since everyone was so sure it would.

i think what we really need is to find SOMETHING out about anya’s family or home life, or SOMETHING. really, we’ve only actually heard her last name, like, 4 times, maybe? in 3 seasons! we know next to nothing about her family. so they really can’t do a legitimate pregnancy storyline with her until they tell us something about her parents.

im also wondering, if Sanya doesnt get back together, what will they DO with Sav and Anya as characters? i mean, i’ve always felt like their whole POINT on the show was to be Sanya. they were just THE will-they-won’t-they couple. every storyline that was from either of their perspectives was about them as a couple.

i feel like sav could conceivably become like the new craig. and anya…she’s just ripe for the picking for pretty much any new storyline, actually. that is, if the writers are going to go back to real issues instead of the couples drama. i could see anya with a really good rape plot, or cutting, or the pregnancy i’m so hoping for, even without sav being involved.

I think that it was rediculous how they had Johnny stalking Alli. In the first half he asked her to the formal, then after that he’s a complete jerk. Plus how they had him asking that waitress out. It was pointless, and his little fight with bruce, again pointless. Why show all that in the first half, and nothing about it in the second?
It was mainly just focused on Sav and anya. Degrassi used to do a good job splitting a half hour between two seperate conflicts, now they cant even do that in a full hour.
And how mant times had Anya taken back Sav like two, and he cant even give her one second chance? Oh well, this show is beginning to get annoying really.

i agree with u (aside from degrassi getting annoying) the subplots were totally pointless and i was literally thinking (and actually saying out loud to my sister, who was watching with me, even tho this is maybe the third ep of degrassi she’s ever seen) WHILE WATCHING that the subplots were stupid. i would have much rather they skip the subplots altogether (which i think they’ve only ever done in “Take On Me” way back in season 3) and take that time to develop more the potential pregnancy and make the 2nd half less rushed.
and i find it almost ironic that Sav and Anya broke up (most likely for good) over this, of all things. its usually something stupid that sav does, and anya takes him back. he should at least realize where she’s coming from and shouldn’t be so surprised that she took drastic measures to keep him.

Did anyone one else notice that throughout the episode Sav does nothing but lie to Anya, and she forgives him and then she lies about the pill and he says he can’t trust her. But their whole relationship he has been lying to her about telling his parents about them???? I don’t know..I hope she does turn out pregnant. I kind of thought Sav was a jerk in this episode.

That may be true, but i see it as he was lying to help them where Anya lied for a dumb reason that could have put them in a situation where they would have to grow up quickly, and that could have all been avoided had she took birth control or got a condom

i think there’s no way we’re EVER going to see Farrah again. maybe, conceivably, she’ll be mentioned, but i highly doubt she’ll make an appearance. especially since she didnt seem in this episode like she was really…how to put this?…a character. i just felt like her existence was a tool to give Anya a reason to fell threatened and lie and break Sav and Anya up.

now all we have to look forward to is “innocent when you dream”, “in your eyes”, and “keep on loving you”. its so hard to be excited when we have absolutely no idea what those episodes are about. i mean, it was so much easier to anticpated degrassi’s return when we knew that the next episode was “why can’t this be love?”: the one where sav’s arranged wife show up blah blah blah.

That could be a loooooong wait :-/ As of now I assume that CTV isn’t going to air Degrassi anymore, and MuchMusic will just finish out Season 9 closer to Summer. On a side note, one thing that annoyed me was that TeenNick provided no press release, no promo pics and not even a photo flipbook.

im assuming that teennick will just continue to air the eps up to the movie, since they need to hurry and finish season 9 before s10 starts, which im assuming will be in august, since the exec said they’re aiming for the movie to be in late july.

and we’ve heard that the last three eps lead up to the movie, so either they’ll hold off to show them the last three weeks before the movie, or they’ll have to show them right away because the movie promos won’t make sense without them.

I’m hoping that Anya’s after pill didn’t kick-in or Anya pretended to take the pill but later on just put it in the trash so she can become pregnant. Or I hope she becomes suicidal and tries to kill herself(like she could get on the roof of Degrassi and say she is going to jump unless Sav gets back with her).

Actually i strongly agree, sav and anya has been a couple for 3 season and nothing spectacular has happened. Even with spinner and jane they had memorable moments. Honestly i dont remember anything they did because they were never established as chars before the got together. They had no real growth, i mean the things that happened in season 8 were more towards anya’s eyes

you know, i really miss those fail-tastic Paige proms. freshman year: she’s sunburned and loses prom queen to Craig and Ashley. sophmore year: limo driver gets arrested, jimmy’s wearing a sari, they caught by the restaurant that they inadvertantly stole from, and they get to prom after there was a fire. junior year: broken leg, manny’s wearing the same dress, hilarity ensues. oh, good times. what happened to those awesome-sauce degrassi proms?

Apparently, Innocent When You Dream has to do with Clare and a family emergency, In Your Eyes has to do with Spane and Dolly J both breaking up and a potential hook up of Spinner and Holly J as a result, and Keep on Loving You has to do with Clare and KC’s relationship as well as Manny and Jay’s relationship….

I’ve also heard similar rumors about Innocent When You Dream and it sounds about right to me. But wow, Spane AND Dolly J break up in the same episode? I’m a little skeptical. I doubt Degrassi could cohesively pull it off and by the look of the promos, it looks like the Declare/Clare thing is going on while Dolly J is still together or recently broke up. There should be at least an episode devoted to that. And Manny and Jay? I got the idea that their storyline was essentiall closed at DGH.

this whole episode was a mess, i thought it was good, but clearly Sav can not hold an A plot. I was cringing just by his acting and everything that happened in the A plot of the first plot. Ray needs some more acting lessons. I love samantha’s acting and i really couldnt believe Anya would do something so stupid, i though she had grown up since Beat It, but obviously she has more growing up to do and honestly out of Sanya, Anya will be more successful
But i disagree with you saying that Farrah never showed interest, because if you look before the bathroom she kinda makes jokes towards it and at dinner sav and farah almost have a moment before anya calls.
I’m so glad alli finally got some type of plot and im really glad dave called her out on being stuck up. Alli just wants to be the popular girl who is reallly cool and i’m glad somebody put her in her place. But more importantly im glad they didnt make Dave and Alli into a couple, i like seeing them as friends and dont think we need a new couple every episode.
I still feel iffey about this season because the main characters arent really living up to what they can be. I mean season 8 they shoved all these ppl down our throats and now we barely see them. The whole Danny/Sav/Peter friendship is boring…seriously. Peter and Riley are way more interesting. But i do like the Holly J/Chante/Anya friendship they actually have some substance but i think they need to have like a friendship based episode.
I hate when i wait for something for so long and its mediocre :(

However, Kary, some good news is that the first promo for Heart Like Mine didn’t show KC with beer or the gun, so they’re trying to focus it more on KC and Clare’s relationship.

They had four really good plots, but due to the way they focused things every one got completely underdeveloped.
Sanya and Farah drama would have been great, they underplayed how interested she was having (which was good) then had her slap it in Anya’s face, which was tacky and killed the set-up.
Sanya pregnancy drama could have been more interesting, but it was played as an afterthought.
Bruce and Johnny friendship needed some coverage eventually, as the two of them seem so different with all the character growth Johnny got. Putting some tension between them was a good plan, the way they did it had no build up, and no actual strife.
Ali and Dave… I like both characters, and my thoughts about the previews had my mind elsewhere. Since there was Johnny drama there needed to be Ali drama. But this was just… unfun.

None of them are up. They don’t upload the episodes online that far in advance…they may post it an hour or so ahead of time but that’s about it.

Guys, don’t hate me, but I really liked the episode. I thought it was kind of sad, and I really couldn’t see Sanya breaking up. I think they will have Farrah come back more often now. Anya will probably end up being pregnant now, or keept saying she is, to try and make Sav come back. I think Danya would be kind of amazing, I would pretty much like it! I really can’t wait for the new movie! It is going to be pretty amazing(: just saying.
Alli and Dave would be really amazing together also. I could totally see it.

Okay, I was thinking about it, and I have a feeling Anya will say she is pregnant, to bring Sav back. She tells one of her friends and they spill to one of their boyfriends. Preferrably Chantay and Danny, then Sav finds out and that splits them more than apart. Anya will get really mad and try to go for Declan because he thinks she’s hot. Well Declan and Holly J break up after Declan and Jane start hooking up again. No more Spane either. Then Declan uses Clare to make Holly J mad, but secretly tries to go out with Anya.

I hope that they cover more of the possible pregnancy/Prom Night stuff in a later episode. Also I don’t think that the writers would break them up unless they already knew what they were going to do with their characters later on. I also don’t like that the episode almost goes there, but then ends up not going there. It’s like the writers want to go there, but then they are too scared to. Also, I don’t know if it’s just me, but I have a feeling that the writers wanted to go make Anya pregnant, but when they were presenting the storyline ideas TeenNick was like “We don’t want a pregnancy! We want this, this, that, this, and that or we won’t air that episode!” like they are telling the writers what to do. I guess we will just have to wait and see what Sav’s and Anya’s futures hold.

The only reason I said that is because TeenNick was the one that decided that Season 10 is going to be in Telenovela Format which means it really affected how the writers wrote this coming Season, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the writers listen to most of what TeenNick wants.

The Canadians run it by Teen nick before they run it, they have meeting after meaning about these things. They started doing this after they had the abortion episode that was supposed to air in Season 3 but didn’t air until 2006

No, it did not, KaylynnCheerGirl. Accidents Will Happen didn’t air in the US as part of Season 3 because the-N had issues with the subject matter. To this day, I believe that plotline is one of the few in the US to show a pregnant teenager going through with an abortion and with little guilt. If my memory serves me, I believe it aired in a marathon as a lead-up to Season 5.

i think its dumb to judge the episode based on what you expected. maybe that’s a sign that you shouldnt read tweets or spoilers about them? idk. your review just seems biased on your expectations for it. I thought it was a good episode that covered a few issues about arranged marriages, morning after pills, etc. The script/acting was more than decent. And the subplots were definitely good, i dont think they deserve a D at all. Oh well, it’s your opinionated blog anyway, so whatevs.

Yeah I thought that was really funny, like the way she said it sounded like it was for a comedy show. I think she said it that way because she was ashamed of what she did. Also I liked the very beginning when she says “Gotcha!” and then laughs cause she sounds like a little kid.

I find it funny how you said i should watch Broken PROMises. Well, duh. It’s my favorite show. But in response to the episode itself, I am going to hit ray up and peacefully have a civilized discussion on how this thing turned out! Look, ray, the acting was great, but the format was a mess, she was quote and un-quote pregnant for, like, FIVE minutes, the ending really pissed me off. Oh yeah, you were real nice. And all the while? I think I wanted to take a crap. :-)

And no, accidents will happen took place in season 3. It never aired until 2006. And actually, they did do it once before with Jagged Little Pill. Apparently there was an originally version that was too hard-core, so they did some major editing and aired it as the Season 2 finale. I think. And Shannon? There’s an article that says TeenNick is testing some soap-y waters. Yes, Nickelodeon is testing out the telenovela format for all future airings of it’s shows, with Degrassi as it’s prototype. If the rating are high, they’ll follow suit.

the writing, meaning STORYLINES, teen nick has nothing to do with sav and anya getting back together or not, and this season is not a telenovela, but they can still play the episodes every day without a problem, nothing needs to change

It will be interesting if they do any more with Anya and Sav – but I am hoping they do more with Johnny and Ally – they really had chemistry and you can believe that he cared about her. I am hoping they either bring them back together or if they are making Johnny to be a “slease” that have him have anger problems and threaten her, etc. I guess it depends if these actors stay in their roles (and the haircut on Johnny is NOT working – he looks short and pudgy)

I’ve never commented here before but i always read them. I enjoy the critism and critique. Alot of you make really good points and it really makesd me think about the writers. I love Degrassi and I’ve also noticed how they dont seem to ‘go there’ anymore. It use to be such an interesting show with real drama not just whose hooking up and whose breaking up. Maybe they’ve just run out of things they’ve haven’t done yet.
To Kary: I understand this is your blog and you’re running it the way you want to but could you please do somethiong about the people here that are arguing. I enjoy your site much but the petty arguing on your comments is getting old. Like many others have said, this is a site to discuss anything and everything Degrasi but unless its arguing over Degrassi, I dont feel it should be allowed to be posted. I just feel personal attacks at other posters shouldnt be allowed. However, its your blog, but maybe you could consider it.

i started watching at the very end of season 8, and i still think that the original cast and early seasons were much better. but i do really like mia in seasons 6 and 7, just not season 8.

I will admit that she was a decent character in seasons 6 and 7 (but 6 more). It all went downhill at season 8. I completely began to loathe her character, and that’s saying something since I have never hated any other character besides her. I did hate how Manny behaved in season 4, though. But Manny is a wonderful character, so it’s hard to hate her. I guess that’s the closest.
