Degrassi and MuchMusic are officially "In A Relationship!" Degrassi is moving away from CTV, and will air new episodes exclusively on MuchMusic.

I place this under BREAKING NEWS because the fact Degrassi is switching networks is kinda HUUUUGE.

The Exec tweeted this article that MuchMusic released, saying they’ll be airing the Degrassi Takes Manhattan movie, as well as the batch of 24 episodes scheduled to air this summer.  Below’s the article in its entirety:

**********
UH!!! Spring is in the air, UH!!! We’re feeling GOOD!!!!!! WOO! Sandals on feet, daffodils in bloom, crazies in full effect, yessssssssss.

Ok, maybe we’re getting a little overexcited a little too early – but here’s something we can really be super stoked about: Degrassi: The Next Generation is moving exclusively to MuchMusic this summer!

Season 10 begins production later this month and come the sunny season we’ll debut 48 brand new 30 minute episodes, as well as the TV movie D: NYC – Degrassi Takes Manhattan. We’ll fill you in on more scoop as we get it, but look forward to a ton of original online content and of course, a drama-filled, salacious, intriguing (yet heartwarming), all-new season of Degrassi: TNG … on MuchMusic!

Season 10 will also premiere in the US this summer on TeenNick, Nickelodeon’s 24-hour TV network for teens.
**********

I’m assuming by this that CTV will still be airing the final five episodes of Season 9, which will hopefully start in April.  There’s always worry when a show switches networks, because if it were doing well enough in the ratings CTV wouldn’t let Degrassi go.  But maybe a fresh start on a new network is what Degrassi needs to draw in bigger numbers. What really peaks my interest is the fact they say there will be lots of original online content.  I’m a sucker for extra stuff…hopefully MuchMusic will put more effort into that than CTV did.

  1. In the article it says that they will be airing the 24 episodes over the summer but will their airing schedule be the same as TeenNick, Mon. Tues. Wed. Thurs. for six weeks, or will they have a completely different schedule?

  2. MuchMusic caters much more to Degrassi’s core audience than CTV does. On CTV, Degrassi was totally eclipsed. I have faith that it’ll do just fine on Much.

  3. This is great for Canadians! Whenever I’m there I would much rather watch MuchMusic than CTV for this kind of programming, if that makes sense. But I have one question, will they be premiering the Degrassi Takes Manhattan after they start showing Season 10? Because that could possibly be confusing…

  4. Well, i hope it’s good for the show. i mean, on CTV Degrassi got lower ratings than most shows so a younger audience would be better for it.

  5. But ya know, they never said it would be airing for six consecutive weeks. This is what I’m thinking. They air the first 12 during the first three weeks of july, show the next 12 for three weeks in august, air 25-32 from the first week in september to the end of october, air 33-40 from the beginning of january to the first week of march, and finish up with the last 4 in may, with the would-be movie airing in the last week of may. They take a break in june, july and august like normal networks, distribute the box set around mid-july, and air the would-be season 11 premiere during the first week of september.

  6. And Ray Ablack myspaced me(he’s so nice. He called me buddy, and instead of being rude when I was freaking about Degrassi turning into a soap opera, he told me not to worry my lil’ heart. :-) not to mention that he puts a lil’ smiley face next to all of his messages. He also seems to be really interested in my opinion on their music. Hope he’s not mad when he finds out that I’m on a prepaid phone and can’t listen to their music, and i’ve only ever heard studz.:-( Anyways, i’ll check my myspace, write down on a piece of paper and post the messages for you guys. :-)

We’re gearing up for the new season, but it hasn’t begun for us just yet, so we don’t know too much right now. Keep diggin’ the music, and I don’t know if you know yet, but on our page, you can buy merchandise, like our demo CD. Let us know what you think of it? It’s for you guys after all, so your input means a lot. ray :)

  11. It’s actually SoundSpeed’s myspace, but he’s pretty much the only one who checks it. I’ll have to ask him to check his own. 2 years ago? Seriously? Well that would explain why the guy in the pics looks like a werewolf. Anyway, I looked it up, and I’m pretty sure he meant to say a telenovela, which are pretty much all about love, taboo, sex, racism, and homosexuality. If Degrassi’s supposed to be getting wild, then i’d be REALLY excited about the concept of it becoming a telenovela. What does scare me is that all telenovelas are developed on a limited-run basis, with a predeveloped end-date in mind.

  12. Although, i did read that most telenovelas run on about 150 episodes, which, if the truth being that this is taking place, would mean that we would have at least 102 more episodes beyond season 10’s 48. And Stephen tweeted that he plans to continue Degrassi: The Next Generation even after the spin-off is underway. He did say to keep in mind that it’s tv and anything can happen, but if he plans to air them at the same time, and this would indeed be a Spin-off, this would only be possible if it focused on a character that had previously been written off the show. And you can’t have 2 shows taking place in one fictional school at the same time, which would mean that the spin-off? Of degrassi? Would not be taking place IN Degrassi. It’s weird, no?

  13. KaylynnCheerGirl – MuchMusic is basically Canada’s answer to MTV in the states. Though now we have MTV Canada, so it’s a little confusing…anyway, MuchMusic airs/has aired a lot of teen dramas like Vampire Diaries, The OC, Gossip Girl, Secret Life of the American Teenager, and they currently air Degrassi, as well.

  16. As I don’t live in Canada (or the US), I can’t really say I liked or didn’t like the fact that it changes networks, bút if MuchMusic airs shows like Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries, it must be cool, right? :)
By the way, I read something about Miriam and Cassie not returning for season 10 on Wikipedia, and we all know that there’s a lot of crap on there but there’s also stuff that is true. So does anyone know if they are returning? Cause I wouldn’t like it when they don’t!

  17. The emma part is true, as Miriam has confirmed herself that she would not be returning to acting last fall. The manny part hopefully is not. Bruce has been written out. This was confirmed on twitter. Neither Declan or Jane have been confirmed, but looking at the circumstances, Jane 10 is probably a no-go, and unless their parents split up or he magically gets a job in rome faraway land, Declan is here to stay. In reference to peter, have you even read my message? The entire soundspeed band is gearing up for season 10, so this means sav, peter, danny, johnny and spinner have been confirmed.

  18. Why is Danny returning? I thought he was going to go to law school! I just really think Danny is boring and needs to be written out of the series.

  19. if spinner’s staying, i feel like the show wouldn’t be complete without Jane there too. and a long time ago, brogren said on his twitter something about planning the season 10 opening credits, and he mentioned jane. i think he was kidding about the whole thing, but i dont think (or at least i hope) he would mention her if she wasn’t gonna be there.
