Degrassi Episode Review: Smash Into You

PLOT A SUMMARY: Dave is desperate to get Alli back, who wants nothing to do with him.  Dave joins the Model UN and surprises Alli by setting everything up.  She agrees to finally talk with Dave, which leads to them making out and getting back together.  Meanwhile, Dave’s former summer fling Jacinta is constantly texting him, wanting to get back together.  He blocks her on all social media sites, and when she calls him, Dave tells her to never call him again.  Dave and Alli greet all of the students from other schools who arrive at Degrassi for the Model UN, and Dave comes face to face with Jacinta again.

Jacinta confronts Dave in front of Alli during the Model UN, and Dave is forced to tell Alli about him and Jacinta hooking up.  He tells Alli that Jacinta is stalking him everything will be ok, but that still doesn’t ease Alli’s fears.  Dave secretly talks to Jacinta and invites her to meet up outside, and they go for a drive.  She thinks they’re getting back together, but Dave tells her he’s driving her to the train station to get her away from him and Alli.  Jacinta doesn’t understand what she did to cause Dave to stop talking to her, and he says them hooking up was a mistake.  She grabs Dave’s phone and jumps out of the car at a stoplight, running off to send Alli breakup messages (which Alli freaks out over back at the Model UN).  Dave catches up with Jacinta, and as they continue to argue Jacinta walks into traffic without looking and gets hit by a car.  Dave returns to Degrassi, where Alli is waiting to chew him out.  Dave tells her about the accident, and though Alli tries to comfort him, Dave still feels guilty because the doctors don’t know if Jacinta will ever walk again.

In response to an angry fan, Stephen Stohn once said “Sometimes things unfold in ways that don’t make sense. sometimes they makes sense in a while…sometimes they don’t…”

That quote stayed in the back of my mind as I watched this episode.  It reminded me of how annoyed everyone was after Nowhere To Run, where Bhandurner officially derailed itself in less than sixty seconds with a revelation that was out of character for Dave.

Dave’s infidelity will never really make much sense, but how much does that matter when it opened up the possibility for such an emotional storyline?  It becomes one of those moments that one must eventually accept and/or overlook, because it’s only the means to an end (aka this episode).

I loved this Bhandurner reunion.  Not simply because I’m a Bhandurner fan, but because a couple hastily reunited out of familiarity, yet their unresolved issues weren’t swept underneath the rug.  Rooting for Dave was easy because he was genuinely sorry for hurting Alli, but Alli’s fears given her past were completely understandable…gotta love the extra effort Degrassi took to make Alli’s worries clear by her verbalizing every romantic failure she’s dealt with.  At first Jacinta comes off as a crazy stalker, with Dave labeling her as such helping to shape our notion of her.  But Dave and Jacinta’s conversation in the car hit’s an emotional chord, despite how stalkerish her behavior seemed.  Dave slept with her, then dropped her without an explanation.  She became emotionally attached, so she didn’t understand what she’d done wrong or why she wasn’t good enough.  That’s a question many wish they knew the answer to in their own failed relationships…people fear the idea of not having proper closure.

As far as Dave texting and driving?  I don’t feel like it’s a cop out that he didn’t crash his car or get injured.  This might be a bold thing to say, but it would’ve felt very cliché if Degrassi had gone down that route.  We would’ve seen it coming from a mile away given that from the opening scene of the episode until the accident Degrassi  was practically holding up a giant neon sign saying “DON’T TEXT AND DRIVE.”

Instead, we get a curveball.  I went into this episode blind.  I watched both parts on the same night, and didn’t watch any of the promos for it.  Jacinta getting hit by a car came out of left field.  Nothing else needs to be said about Jahmil French’s performance other than it was phenomenal, from navigating the treacherous waters of Alli’s emotions with Jacinta in the picture to feeling as if he’s responsible for potentially ruining someone’s life.  It’s ironic that Dave didn’t feel guilty about hurting Jacinta emotionally until she got hurt physically.  The accident became a parallel to their fling’s demise, only this time the aftermath unfolded before Dave’s very eyes.  It’s also ironic that with the status of Jacinta’s health currently unknown, we’re now the ones hoping for some type of closure.

PLOT B SUMMARYKatie’s recovering from knee surgery, which means Marisol will have to find a new partner for the Model UN.  Mr. Perino assigns Mo to be her partner, which she reluctantly accepts.  Mo and Marisol get into an argument over the Model UN issue, which leads Mo to stick gum in Marisol’s hair.  Katie and Drew think that Mo might have a crush on Marisol, who isn’t interested in Mo because of his weight.  She plans to tell Mo that she’s not interested, but when she finds him he’s in the middle of taking her Model UN solution of having a benefit concert and expanding on it by creating a song to go along with it.  Marisol starts to develop a crush on Mo, but she’s hurt and storms off when she finds out he doesn‘t feel the same way.  Later, Mo tells her he’s never had feelings for her because he felt she was out of his league, and the two share a kiss.

There are parts of this Mo/Marisol storyline that I liked and disliked.  I applaud the show for going to some length to actually establish chemistry between two characters, but when it comes down to it their pairing still felt kind of random. We finally get to see beyond the shallow exterior of Marisol, but the scene where the “light bulb” goes off in her head and she suddenly has feelings for Mo made me roll my eyes.  But then two seconds later when Mo rejects her instead of it being the other way around that’s fantastic.  They’re not a couple I dislike, but Mo and Marisol’s quick start didn’t really draw me in either.  For me, they’re a couple that could go either way in the future.

PLOT C SUMMARYAdam finds a love note in his book bag, but tears it up because he thinks it’s a prank.  One of his fears is skateboarding, so he hits up Degrassi’s skate park after school, where he’s approached by Tori.  She asks him a bunch of questions about relationships, which leads him to believe she might be his secret admirer despite dating Zig.  Adam keeps an eye on his locker from afar and catches Tori putting a note in his locker.  She tells him her friend has a crush on him, and Adam agrees to go on a double date with Tori, Zig and her friend.  Adam shows up to the date to find out his secret admirer is Tristan.  Tori assumed that Adam’s LGBT pin meant that he was gay, but he informs them that he’s transgender.  Tristan feels embarrassed, but Adam share’s his past dating disasters and encourages Tristan to keep trying.

Reading the episode description for the this plot basically gave it away, and the mentality was “Why are they always screwing over Adam’s love life?”

Watching the plot elicited a different response.  Out of Adam and Tristan’s romantic gaffe came a great conversation between two of the shows LGBT characters.  It was wonderful watching Adam pass on what he’s learned to Tristan.  Normally shows put a lot of work into portraying LGBT issues correctly, but they flipped the switch to show how people can make honest mistakes (Tori assuming Adam was a gay guy, and Zig not knowing what the “T” in LGBT stands for) without it being a storyline involving malicious behavior.  And Adam gets a boost of confidence realizing that not everyone immediately views him as “the transgender kid” or “that girl who’s now a guy.”

P.S.  Thank you Degrassi for mention the Owen connection!

Smash Into You Pt. 2 airs tomorrow night (Friday 4/19) at 9pm on MuchMusic and TeenNick.

BREAKING NEWS: Season 12 Premiere Date Now Targeted For Monday July 16th

Over the past couple of months we’ve endured quite a few changes to Degrassi’s Season 12 summer block.  First it was a 5-week telenovela that premiered on Monday, July 9th.  Then it turned into a 4-week telenovela that premiered on Monday, July 9th.

The latest update is that it’s a 4-week telenovela that will premiere on Monday, July 16th.

The format is the same: episodes will be Monday through Thursday each week, with the finale falling on Thursday, August 9th.  This date isn’t shocking because it falls right in line with the Season 10 and 11 premieres happening in the middle of July.  And pushing it back a week means the summer block isn’t basically wrapped up in July, which would’ve felt weird with previous telenovelas having ended in early September.  I don’t care when the actual date is, but the frustrating part is that some of us may or may not be planning our first ever trip to Canada this summer…so if they can nail down the official date and tell us as soon as possible that would be most appreciated. Leggo!

Based on the new tentative premiere date, here’s what the episode schedule would look like for the summer block:

WEEK 1
Monday July 16th
: Ep 1201 – Come As You Are Pt. 1
Tuesday July 17th: Ep 1202 – Come As You Are Pt. 2
Wednesday July 18th: Ep 1203 – Walking On Broken Glass Pt. 1
Thursday July 19th: Ep 1204 -Walking On Broken Glass Pt. 2

WEEK 2
Monday July 23rd
: Ep 1205 – Got Your Money Pt. 1
Tuesday July 24th: Ep 1206 – Got Your Money Pt. 2
Wednesday July 25th: Ep 1207 – Say It Aint So Pt. 1
Thursday July 26th: Ep 1208 – Say It Aint So Pt. 2

WEEK 3
Monday July 30th: Ep 1209 – Closer To Free Pt. 1
Tuesday July 31st: Ep 1210 – Closer To Free Pt. 2

DegrassiBlog Search Terms 4/17/12

DegrassiBlog search terms prove that women are sex-starved maniacs just like men.

I’m back with some more DegrassiBlog search terms…these are the things people are searching for on google and other search engines and it somehow leads them to my blog:

1) melinda shankar bikini
2) melinda shankar nude
- Seriously? People are still looking for nude pics of Mindy?  Chances are it’s because of the Season 9 episode Shoot To Thrill that they think there are actual nude pics of her floating around, so Melinda has a message for you weirdos:

3) luke bilyk gay
4) munro chambers gay
- I can neither confirm nor deny the sexual preferences of Luke Bilyk and Munro Chambers lol…

5) cristine prosperi bikini
6) skinny lesbian
7) manny santos season 5 hair
- Yes, Manny’s season 5 hair was awful.

8) ryan cooley penis
9) ryan cooley gay
- Hmmmmmmm…..Hmmmmmmmm

10) declan from degrassi teennick naked
11) luke bilyk shirtless pics
12) blowjob
- Ummm with this blowjob thing…can you be a little more specific?

13) degrassi cancelled 2012
- Nope, Degrassi hasn’t received the axe yet, and will be around through at least Spring 2013.

14) cristine prosperi ethnicity
Cristine wears a Pocahontas outfit for Halloween and all of sudden people are either outraged because they think she’s being “racially insensitive,” or they’re confused about her ethnicity.  She’s 100% black by the way:

15) cute black girl on ctv
- Shanice Banton.

16) degrassi new beginnings 11.5 does alli get shot
- No, though I’m guessing there are quite a few people who wish she had.

17) degrassi nude
- Apparently people think Degrassi is porn because it’s got ASS in it.

18) sam earle shirtless
19) ricardo hoyos shirtless
- See photo at top of blog post.

20) munro chambers nude
21) munro chambers engaged
- If there were any nude pics or nude engagement pics of Munro, the Degrassi universe would spontaneously combust, and those of us who survived would eventually drown in a sea of fiery ovaries.

22) imogen is julia from degrassi
- Not true, but if it were it’d make for one hell of a Degrassi mindfuck!

23) spencer van wyck quits
- Who knows what’s going on here if he’s going to be in Season 12, or if he quit or was fired.  But I will not rest until I uncover the truth. #WHEREISWESLEY2012

24) aislinn paul dating luke bilyk
- Luke can’t possibly be dating Aislinn if he’s in a gay relationship with Munro (see #3 and #4 above)…or maybe they’re in a Degrassi cast love triangle…

25) why did miriam mcdonald leave degrassi
- Because I blackmailed Stephen Stohn into making sure Spemma never saw the light of day after their marriage.  In reality, she left because it was her time to go.  There was nothing left for her character to do and Degrassi was doing a total purge of post-grad characters in order to revamp the show for Season 10.  It’s ironic that people search for all kind of nude pics of the Degrassi cast, but there were no nude searches for Miriam…she’s the only one with nude pics or herself floating around the internet.

Degrassi Episode Preview: Smash Into You Pt. 1

I’m not going to watch Smash Into You Pt. 1 tonight (I’m doing the manly thing and watching baseball tonight #GoTwins), so I figured I’d respond to some recent DegrassiBlog comments instead:

-

Kary,
What season do you prefer more, 8 or 11.5? Never did I ever think that I’d find something as cringeworthy as season 8, but I was WRONG!!!!!” (via Aquitar94)

11.5.  The most basic answer I can give is that there was only 1 episode worth watching in Season 8 (Heart of Glass).  We’ve already had two quality episodes in 11.5: Not Ready To Make Nice and Need You Now.

*****

Next, I didn’t think that I would feel the loss of the class of 2011, but I have. I find it completely unbelievable that Katie & Marisol are magically the HBIC’s of Degrassi. A popular guy like Drew thought Marisol was annoying and Katie was barely existent, so how did that happen? It just felt random.” (via Aquitar94)

I agree with this. This crop of seniors feel “off” and just rub me the wrong way…even Fiona (not of her own doing, but the LACK of the writers doing anything with her character).  This comment from Nina Shewchuk sums it up well:

One of the problems is the fact that with Holly J’s class gone, we’re being forced to care about characters we haven’t gotten to know because they haven’t been around long enough to have been developed properly. The same thing happened in season 8–Holly J, Sav, Anya, Jane–these were characters who had just been introduced during the previous season, and with Emma, Spinner, Manny and co. gone, these new kids needed to fill their shoes. The problem was that at that point, we didn’t care about most of them, which is why s8 was so weak. We just weren’t emotionally invested enough in these new characters to care about what happened to them.”

Her comment also made me realize something else.  It’s funny how people are saying how much better the Class of 2011 was compared to the characters that are still left on the show; everyone was saying the exact same thing about Holly J and company when they first joined the show, because they were considered inferior to the original TNG cast.  And when the current crop of juniors finally graduate people will be saying how much better they were than the characters that are left behind…it’s a never ending cylce of rose-colored commentary, lol.

*****

It looks like what they’re doing with the niners is good, but by the time it has any noticeable consequences, it’ll be too late for most of the viewers. The niners have pretty much taken the back-seat and gotten a few little plots so far, so by the time they move up in grades and it’s their time to shine, we’ll at least know a bit about the characters since we’d seen them (although in small roles) back in 11.5” (via Simon)

I don’t buy that it’ll be “too late” for viewers (old fans may leave, but they’ll be replaced with newer ones), but what they’re doing with the niners by slowly introducing them before throwing them into heavy storylines is what they SHOULD be doing with every new character that joins the show.

******

I didn’t really like Now or Never, but it was miles better that what we’ve seen so far of 11.5.
Also, I feel like they’re butchering Fiona’s character in a way…she seems so much older and out of place, and it’s annoying. I wish she had just graduated.” (via iDegrassia)

Fiona is currently my favorite character on the show and it’s a shame that they’re completely wasting her character in 11.5.  I guess Holly J truly was her crutch, because so far there’s really no reason for her to be around.  I had hopes that with HJ gone we’d get to see Fiona struggle with fitting in and watch her learn to become self reliant, but that lasted for all of about half an episode.

******

I miss class of 2011, too. Degrassi will never stop adding tons of new characters to a cast that is already half-developed—it’s freaking ridiculous! And adding a senior? Okay?” (via iDegrassia)

Degrassi Junior High had a gazillion characters and they did just fine, so generically Degrassi having 20+ characters on the show now or in the future shouldn’t be an issue.  There’s two problems though: 1) Degrassi now adds multiple characters with the intentions of them immediately being used as “regulars,” and 2) a lot of fans still hold onto the ridiculous notion that characters basically deserve equal screentime.  Not all characters are created equal, and they never will be.  But we can all agree that Degrassi needs to do a better job of incorporating new characters into the fold as well as not overdosing fans with a specific character for too long. For example, I’m pretty sure a lot of us got tired and/or annoyed with Clare there for a while because every time we turned around we were being inundated with her plot.  But as of me writing this Jake has made an appearance in something like 12 or 13 consecutive episodes. No one is groaning “Oh God there’s Jake playing a support role with a handful of lines again…I’m so tired of seeing him,” because he hasn’t been shoved in our face, down our throats and out through our butts during his streak like the show tends to eventually do with whichever characters are the featured characters of a given season.

*****

I agree with you completely. And too add, Degrassi is becoming too soap opera’ish. Way too many love triangles that are so unecessary.” (via Tink)

AND

I understand what you’re saying and I could see Drew/Clare too lol if Degrassi used season 12 to focus on teen issues rather than A breaking up with B because they aren’t over C, who is in a love triangle with D & F, who has a gay crush on G, then I’d be VERY pleased.” (via Aquitar94)

Ahhh yes and now we’ve come back full circle to tonight’s episode, which features romantic drama in all three storylines.  I should be outraged like everyone else, but I’m not. I think I’m burned out from complaining about how relationship heavy the show is.  In theory it really shouldn’t matter because relationship storylines CAN be good, but the show burns through so many of them that we have no reason to have faith in any of them.  Sometimes I wonder why fans bother shipping any couple. Whatev, I’ve got more pressing things to think about…like WHERE IN THE WORLD IS WESLEY?

*Remember when we were all like “WTF?” during Nowhere To Run when Dave admitted to Alli that he slept with some random girl?  To be honest super long hiatus Degrassi went on helped me get over them destroying what was my favorite ship for what seemed like no real reason.  The thing that still bothers me though is Dave having the balls to suddenly sleep with some girl when we’d never even seen Bhandurner become physical.  I’m not sure what to expect from this episode or which angle they’ll take.  I’m not sure Bhandurner is an A-Plot couple, but we’ll see.

*Maybe we’ll get to see a non douchebag side of Marisol?

*It’s nice that the show remembers Clare and Adam are friends.  Not commenting on anything related to Adam’s love life since his always ends in disappointment…I feel your pain brotha.

Degrassi Episode Review: Need You Now

PLOT A SUMMARY: Eli wakes up to Imogen taking pictures of him, and asks her if she wants to spend the night.  However, Eli’s dad Bullfrog ruins everything by insisting Eli rest.  Bullfrog also tells Eli that he shouldn’t be dating, which angers Eli because he thinks his dad is being too controlling and scaring Imogen off with bipolar talk.  Eli meets with Imogen in the art room and she shows him a collage she made of him, representing him overcoming mental illness.  He loves it until he finds out Imogen showed it to everyone in her class, and he accidentally breaks her camera and freaks out on her.  He apologizes by getting her a brand new camera, which she reluctantly accepts.  Eli tells Adam that he pawned Bullfrog’s guitar to buy the camera, and when Eli can’t find her at her house or get a hold of her by phone he freaks out because he’s convinced she’s cheating on her.

Eli asks Imogen where she was and she lies to him, saying she was at home doing homework.  Then in class the two have an awkward exchange where Eli asks if she’s friends with Jake and questions what plans for the night are, which visibly irritates Imogen.  She tells him she’s hanging out at Fiona’s, so Eli and Adam head to Fi’s place and sneak in through a window.  Eli thinks he’s catching Imogen cheating with a guy, but it turns out Imogen and Fiona were watching a movie.  That leads to Eli and Imogen arguing: Eli feels like everything is about his bipolar disorder and Imogen feels like nothing she say to Eli will ever be right.  Eli storms off to his house where he starts trashing anything that reminds him of Imogen.  Eli doesn’t understand why he’s behaving this way when he’s done everything the doctors have asked of him, and his therapist tells him he’s just dealing with hormones. Eli and Imogen break up, but they still remain friends.

We could talk all day about how ridiculous Imogeli was as a romantic couple. Yes, their setup was rushed.  No, there was no romantic chemistry between them…ever.  But when it comes down to it, does any of that really even matter?  It’s a tough pill to swallow for anyone who jumped on the Imogeli ship that despite any hoopla from the fandom, networks or Degrassi execs, Imogeli as a couple was a plot device and nothing more.

As bad as it was set up, Imogeli’s romantic relationship was necessary.  When it comes down to it, this plot was all about Eli.  It was basically a test run to see how he could cope with a romantic scenario breaking down before his very eyes without “Craiging out” and crashing hearses.  I loved the complexity of Eli and Imogen’s positions and how they intertwined to make you feel bad for both of them.  Eli felt like any time he reacted negatively Imogen assumed he was becoming manic: he was right.  Imogen felt like anything she said positively would be taken the wrong way by Eli: she was right.  The scene is in Part 2 where they’re talking in class (ultimately about Imogen’s plans to hang out at Fiona’s) kills me.  The level of fear and paranoia both characters display is heartbreaking.

The scene with the therapist seemed really weird at first, as if the woman were brushing off Eli’s problems by basically saying “Oh it’s nothing to worry about, it’s just hormones.”  But the more I watch it the more her saying Eli has to learn to deal with it (the heartbreak) makes sense.  Though he is bipolar and he will have breakdowns at times, sometimes he’ll be reacting the way most people react in a negative situation.

I can’t tell you how much I loved Imogeli’s breakup scene.  It has nothing to do with liking or disliking their ship, it’s all about what Imogen said:

I spent a year fantasizing about you…dreaming about being your girlfriend, but now that we’re together it’s like I barely know you.”

She admits that dating him didn’t live up to the expectations she had in her head.  Oh how often that will ring true in our lives now and forever, not just with relationships, but with anything really.  Imogeli fans can relate at the moment.  And just like Eli, they will have to learn to deal with the heartbreak.

PLOT B SUMMARYKC finds a letter from the Powells that is an invitation to Tyson’s christening.  KC tells Jenna about it, but she’s not interested in going so he goes by himself.  He learns the Powells have changed Tyson’s name to Doug, and KC is determined to be a part of his life again.  KC starts lashing out at Jenna because she wants nothing to do with Tyson, so he decides he’ll do it on his own.  KC randomly drops by the Powells’ house because he wants to spend time with Tyson, but they tell them they’re headed to visit family.  KC tries to invite himself, but they tell him that’s not a good idea, and that they’ll just call him to schedule a time for him to visit Ty.  KC wants to get a lawyer to sue and regain custody of Tyson, but KC’s mom talks him out of it.  KC apologizes to Jenna for being mad at her, and learns that getting over Tyson has not been as easy for her as it seems.  KC joins the Science Olympics Team with the realization that he can strive to become someone Tyson will look up to someday.

Just like Eli’s plot, KC’s does a good job of making your feel *something* while you’re watching it.  His storyline is saddening on many levels.  KC’s in full regret mode, and despite all of his good intentions what happened can’t magically be undone.  He wants as much time as possible with his son, but he can’t accept the fact that there’s no room for him to suddenly insert himself into the Powells’ lives, even if he is Tyson’s biological father.

Though this storyline is from KC’s perspective, I love what we saw when it came to Jenna.  KC misinterpreted her lack of interest as her being “over it.”  In reality she was being smart.  Why beat yourself over the head with hurtful thoughts only to drive yourself as crazy as KC was doing?  And kudos to us finally seeing the gifted version of KC for the first time in quite a while.

PLOT C SUMMARYTori tries out for the Power Squad, but it’s not good enough for her to get a spot on the team.  However, Marisol adds Tori to the squad after one of the other girls get injured.  Tori agrees to help videotape Zig for a skateboarding competition, but by doing so it makes her late for Power Squad practice.  Marisol kicks her off the team, and when Tori pleads for a second chance Marisol makes Tori the mascot until she can find a replacement.  Humiliated, Tori wants Zig to be by her side as she parades around the halls in the mascot suit, but he’d rather skate with the guys instead.  She tries again to get him to support her by asking him to go to the football game, but he refuses.  Tori is hurt because she doesn’t feel like Zig supports her and calls him out on it.  Later, Marisol tells Tori to suit up for the Power Squad because someone has volunteered to be the mascot…it turns out it was Zig and Tori forgives him.

The niners have been on a roll in Season 11.5.  I knew that had to come to an end at some point.  Yes, it’s a filler plot, but even fillers need to have some sort of entertainment value…this one doesn’t. Zig is an unbelievably boring character and has yet to offer any value to the show.

I love Tori and Tristan, but Tori and Zig on their own lack any kind of energy.  It’s a shame that Zori shows more enthusiasm in their promo pics than they do in the actual episodes:

Entertainment Weekly’s latest article reminds us all that Degrassi’s about to hit a milestone…it’ll reach the 300 episode mark at some point during Season 12. I believe ep 1223 is the 300th episode, so we probably won’t get to see it until this fall.

We also get the names of all the new characters: Campbell (grade 10), Mike (grade 12) and siblings Luke & Becky (grade 11).  It’s looking like Demetrius Joyette and Dylan Everett will be playing Campbell and Mike (still not sure who is playing who yet), while Becky will be played by Sarah Fisher and Luke will be played by the guy on the far left of the picture below:

The article also mentioned the return of Holly J for the finale In The Cold Cold Night, but hardcore Degrassians already knew that.  Almost 6 months ago when The Stohn posted a picture of the finale script all it took was a little photoshopping to see the page underneath the cover, which confirmed Holly J appearing and having lines.
